Recall our Sponsor Shawn Brown, owner of Stars and Stripes Tactical, who was quoted in our July issue feature about National Firearm Safety Month. Shawn was so impressed by the feedback his team received that he wanted to do something big to let readers know how he supports our mission. (See Shawn’s bigger Stars and Stripes Tactical ad on Page 15 this month.) Another Sponsor everyone knows, Scott Magness, owner of Scott’s Fireplace Products, has a larger ad this month to help celebrate his store’s anniversary. Scott wants to thank readers for years of their support with his invitation to come visit him at his store next to Charlotte’s Restaurant on West Chester Pike. Special discounts this month for sure! (See Scott’s Fireplace Products ad this month on page 25.) This month we also welcome a new Sponsor, Dr. Michael Allodoli, Broomall resident, Optometrist and Owner of Broomall Eye Care. Dr. Allodoli is no stranger to our magazines. He’s a Charter Sponsor of our sister publication Marple Friends & Neighbors. Because Dr. Allodoli knows many of his patients also come from Newtown Square, he has kindly offered to be a Sponsor of our community now as well. Truly, as any of Dr. Allodoli’s patients know, he is the real deal. If you are looking for a new eye doctor, and a real deal, I highly recommend Broomall Eye Care, located behind the Lawrence Park Shopping. (See Dr. Allodoli’s first ad on page 8.) You know I wouldn’t end without thanking all our advertising Sponsors who bring us this new September issue. If you enjoy reading your hometown magazine, please reveal that to one of our advertising Sponsors with intention, by choosing to do business with them first. Tell them you value them as much as they obviously value us as residents of Newtown Square by choosing to be Bringing People Together through our hometown magazine.

Dear Residents, So long, summer! It seems there’s never enough time to soak it all in, though I hope you were able to enjoy some fun in the sun. And just like that, September snaps us back to reality. Back to school, back to routines and back to all things pumpkin spice. We welcome cooler weather, falling leaves and post-season baseball. Speaking of baseball, you’ll meet Chris Newell, one of our own homegrown players working hard to fulfill his dream of playing in the major leagues. Our business profile features the Law Office of Deborah M. Truscello and her commitment to consistent and compassionate legal representation in our community. In this issue, we also take some time to recognize and celebrate the beautiful bond between grandparents and their grandchildren. We are always looking for more Newtown Square families, individuals and organizations to feature in our magazine. If you’d like to nominate someone, please email me at STurnerHilliard@BestVersionMedia.com.

We would like to thank
for sponsoring this month’s Resident Feature.
Do you remember what you said you wanted to be when you grew up? Perhaps a teacher, a doctor or an astronaut? Or maybe a singer, an artist or a lawyer? For 20-year-old Chris Newell, baseball has always been his dream. In preschool, he declared that when he grew up, he would play Major League baseball. He didn’t say he wanted to play; he said he would play. That’s the difference between wishing and working for what you want.
Chris Newell in the outfield at NELL
Chris grew up in Newtown Square, just steps from the Newtown Edgmont Little League (NELL) fields, with his father John, his mother Christine and his younger sister Sarah. Christine said that when Chris was just three years old, he insisted on taking the training wheels off his bike so he could pedal his way faster to NELL. Athletics was a big part of Chris’ childhood. Though he played basketball for his schools’ teams, baseball was always his passion. From tee-ball to tournament teams, NELL was where Chris felt he belonged. “Some of my very best friends today are ones I met through little league,” Chris said. “It is such a special place not just for the kids, but for the whole family and community.” Chris’ father John said that their family would spend just about every day from April through June at the fields. “Back then, the moms were the chefs of the snack bar, the players’ siblings 6

hung out together and the dads coached and maintained the fields,” he explained. “Everyone got involved, and we made many lifelong friends.” Beyond the friendships formed, NELL was known for its impressive training complex and superior coaching. “I had a lot of great coaches at NELL,” said Chris, “but the one who took me under his wing and gave me every opportunity to excel was Tom Haus.” One of Chris’s best memories was at 10-yearsold, when he and his Pirates teammates, coached by Tom, won their championship game. Tom recognized Chris’ potential and not only helped him develop as a player, but he also connected Chris to other experienced trainers and coaches. As a 12-year-old, Chris began to train with E.J. Moyer, a highly regarded coach at NELL who also happened to be the Assistant Baseball Coach for Malvern Prep’s Varsity High School Team.
Chris said that Coach Hilliard helped him become a better person both on and off the field. “He taught my teammates and me how to be selfless, not selfish,” Chris explained. “We were all equal regardless of our abilities, and he taught us that when we play for the greater good of the team and not our own personal gain, the result is success.”
“Playing baseball for Malvern Prep (MP) was always a dream of mine,” said Chris. “Malvern’s baseball program is consistently ranked one of the best nationally. Their reputation for being a team focused on being great players, and even greater people lined up with my own beliefs.” Chris worked hard to improve his pitching, fielding and hitting, with the goal of becoming a future MP Friar.
This valuable life lesson was put to the test in the summer “Chris’ incredible work ethic of 2016 when Chris sufJohn, Chris, Sarah and Christine Newell and passion are second to fered a severe elbow injury. at the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska none,” said Malvern Prep’s He was on a travel team Head Coach, Freddy Hilliard. “It’s the reason we recruited playing in a tournament in North Carolina. “I typically played him and the reason why he is such a successful player today.” in the outfield, but the coach put me in to pitch a few innings. Resident Feature Dodgers pitcher Tommy John, involves repair to the ligament and extensive rehabilitation. Chris was crushed. “Here I was going into my junior year at Malvern wondering if I’d ever be able to play again,” he said. Chris had surgery that fall and began the road to recovery. He knew that he had five months until the start of the season, and he was determined to be back on the field for the first day of practice. “This injury forced me to focus on the things that I could control,” explained Chris. “I turned to nutrition and strength training, which ultimately made me a better player.” Looking back now, Chris said that he learned a lot about himself and considered the injury, surgery and rehab a blessing. It should come as no surprise that Chris made it back to the field for that first day of practice. Though he was only cleared to hit that season, his coach said it was good for Chris. “While it was tough losing his incredible defense in centerfield, Chris became an even better leader,” explained Freddy. “He rallied the team, studied the game and became an extra assistant coach, all while continuing to be our best hitter.” During Chris’ time with Malvern Prep, he and his team won three state championships and two league championships. By the time Chris graduated in 2019, he was named the #9 Outfielder in the country. He was selected to play in the 2018 Under Armor All-America Game, and was named 2019’s Pennsylvania Gatorade Player of the Year. Chris was heavily recruited by the top Division 1 college baseball programs in the country. Chris’ father John said that Freddy predicted that would happen. “I had a call with Freddy early on in Chris’ freshman season,” John said. “He told me to get ready to help Chris make some big decisions.” Just as predicted, offers came in from Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and Miami, to name a few. In the end, Chris decided that The University of Virginia (UVA) was where he wanted to play. Their team had just won a national championship and their coaching staff was highly respected. “It’s funny: I remember years ago watching my first-ever College World Series in Tom Haus’ kitchen, with
Chris Newell with his father John celebrating the win that sent UVA to the College World Series
my friend Jake,” Chris recalled. “It was UVA vs. Vanderbilt, and I couldn’t help but notice how the UVA players carried themselves on the field and in the dugout. They were a class act, and that always stuck with me.” But another big opportunity came knocking shortly after Chris graduated from Malvern Prep. His hard work, grit and determination earned him the opportunity to play for a Major League team: Chris was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2019 MLB draft. “That was a tough decision — sign with the Cardinals or go to college,” said John. “We relied heavily

on input from former coaches and people we know who have played in the MLB and those in the industry.” Ultimately, Chris decided to put his MLB dream on hold to play centerfield for the Virginia Cavaliers. It is said that good things come to those who wait, and so far, for Chris, the wait has been filled with moments and memories for the record books. In his freshman year with the Cavaliers, Chris started every game and led the team in batting average, runs batted in (RBIs) and stolen bases. After a sluggish start to their 2021 baseball season, the Virginia Cavaliers rallied to finish the year with a winning record and a chance to play in the College World Series. They went 6–0 in elimination rounds in the postseason, captured the Columbia regional title and earned themselves a spot to compete. The boys were headed to Omaha, Nebraska, as one of eight teams vying for the championship. Little did Chris know that while he was punching his ticket to the big game, friends, family, coaches and fans back home were booking flights and buying their seats to cheer for #9. The first game was on Father’s Day, and John was there to celebrate. “I remember sitting in awe watching my son play in front of 23,000 fans. Talk about a great Father’s Day gift!”
Aside from Chris’ family, many of his teammates from NELL made the trip along with NELL coach and mentor Tom Haus. Coach Hilliard checked an item off his bucket list when he made the trip with his brother, Jeff. “Watching Chris play in Omaha was a thrill!” Freddy said. “Chris played really well, though I wasn’t surprised.” Former NELL player, Malvern Prep alumni, coach, and current ESPN broadcaster Mike Rooney was there to call the games, making the whole experience extra special. Playing in the College World Series was a dream come true for Chris. And although the Cavaliers didn’t bring home the trophy, Chris is proud of his team’s performance and is looking forward to next season. He didn’t have much time to soak it all in, though, because just 10 days later, he headed to Cape Cod to make his Cape League debut. Chris has some advice for the younger generation of ballplayers who dream of making it to the big leagues. “Growing up, I wasn’t the best player on my team, but I worked hard to become one,” he said. “Study the game, listen to your coaches and stay hungry.” Luck didn’t get Chris to where he is today. Work did. Do you know a Newtown Square family, individual or nonprofit group who should become known by our community? Retirement Savings Pitfall to Avoid Over the past 25 years, most employers stopped offering defined-benefit retirement plans that were funded solely by the employer. Meanwhile, the number of defined-contribution workplace plans funded primarily by workers exploded. As a result, many workers are now responsible for some or all of their retirement savings. A 401(k) is currently a very popular employer-sponsored defined-contribution plan. It can be a “traditional” or a “Roth” 401(k) plan. A major boost to retirement savings is the fact that plan contributions and earnings in either type of plan grow taxfree as long as they remain in the plan. In addition, a traditional 401(k) allows an upfront tax break because contributions reduce the employee’s taxable salary. However, distributions from a traditional 401(k) are taxable at ordinary income tax rates in the year received. Conversely, contributions to a Roth 401(k) do not reduce the employee's taxable salary but plan distributions are generally tax-free, which creates the opportunity for huge retirement tax savings. While financial planners generally encourage employees to contribute as much as possible to a 401(k), keep in mind that the annual contribution is limited. For 2021, the maximum employee contribution is limited to $19,500. An employee age 50 or older can contribute an additional $6,500, for a total of $26,000.
Changing jobs during the year can cause an employee to exceed the annual contribution limits, which exposes the employee to penalties and adverse tax consequences. For example, say an employee earning $300,000 a year changes employers on July 1, 2021. The employee elects to contribute 8% to each company’s traditional 401(k). In prior years, the employer would stop 401(k) withholding when the employee reached the $19,500 maximum. In 2021, however, the new employer does not know how much the employee contributed to the prior plan. Each employer withholds 8% on the wages it pays, and a total of $24,000 is contributed for the employee in 2021. It is the employee’s responsibility to notify the new employer of the excess contribution so corrective action can be taken. Failure to do so will subject the employee to penalties and potential double taxation of the excess contribution. Such adverse consequences can be avoided if as soon as employment with the second company commences, the employee notifies the new employer of the amount contributed to the prior 401(k) plan. NS

Curtain Bangs
If you’ve been online at all the past few months, you’ve probably come across a new and adaptable hair trend: curtain bangs! All the TikTokers are obsessed. Think of curtain bangs as if your old-school straight-across bangs grew out to your cheekbones and you split them down the middle, to create a face-framing look that’s endlessly chic. Not to mention a little more noncommittal, as far as bangs go.
Let’s dig a little deeper! In the last year, any length of hair is in as long as it is dramatic and that is why curtain bangs are it! The big question is: Are these fitting for your face shape? So if you’re worried that your face shape isn’t cut out for bangs, think again. Curtain bangs add dimension to round faces, as straight across bangs add fullness. Side-swept bangs create more softness, which is especially helpful if you have a strong jawline. Oval
Celebrating

face shapes can wear just about any bang, so get crazy and just go all in! Curtain bangs can also go off-center, creating an illusion of a side part style. Unlike straight across bangs, curtain bangs are a ‘70s-inspired fringe, parted in the middle to frame the face. The bottom line: Curtain bangs are customizable to fit any face shape. The up-keep for curtain bangs is sometimes tough, not knowing when to head back for a trim or even how to style them at home. Knowing how you can recreate the look at home is most important, so don’t be afraid to ask your stylist for a mini lesson on how to blow them dry, or when you should come back to maintain your new look. Consider this the push you needed to give them a try!

Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins
Recipe Corner
By Rachel Koepke
Who doesn’t love a good muffin? This easy recipe can be modified to accommodate gluten-free and dairy-free muffin lovers (see notes below). Perfectly moist and tasty, these muffins are sure to be a hit for the whole family!
Ingredients
Directions
• 1½ cups flour
• 3 mashed bananas
• 1 tsp baking soda
• 1 egg
Preheat the oven to 375ºF. Line muffin tins with paper or non-stick spray.
• 1 tsp cinnamon
• ½ cup applesauce
Mash the bananas and mix with egg, applesauce, and vanilla.
• ½ tsp salt
• 1 tsp vanilla • ½ cup chocolate chips
In a separate bowl, combine dry ingredients.
• ¾ cup sugar
Slowly add dry ingredients to the banana mixture. Mix well. Add chocolate chips. Spoon mixture into muffin tins and bake for 18-20 minutes. Makes 24 muffins.
Notes For a dairy-free option, switch out regular chocolate chips with semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips. For a gluten-free option, replace wheat flour with rice flour or other non-wheat-based flour. Using several different flours as a mixture can help prevent your muffins from being dry.

Bringing People Together
Bringing People Together
by Bob Blaisse Publisher

Sponsoring a Community Is Everyone’s Business When It Means Bringing People Together I hesitated at first. Because I prefer my role as Publisher in our community to be separate from my family life here. But I agreed, because the event influenced my decision to launch our hometown magazine, made possible by local businesses and families coming together. For years I was the Sponsorship Officer of the Newtown Edgmont Little League. My sons grew up watching me hang billboards in the outfields. So, I was not surprised when my oldest son, age 15 at the time, turned to local businesses and
families to lead a change in his community. Ten years later, I see my son’s influence on the mission of this magazine. When Sheila Turner-Hilliard told me “YES,” there is a story worth telling, although personal to me, I agreed. So this month I yield to Sheila to share the story of ten years ago, about a local youth and the influence that young man had on my mission now to be “Bringing People Together.” NS

And The Story Continues
Remember the “Be Prepared 2Stop” Eagle Scout Project? That Eagle Scout Is Now “Prepared 2Start” (Married Life) by Sheila Turner-Hilliard, Photos courtesy of Bob Blaisse Most Newtown Township residents still remember the Boy Scout whose Eagle Scout Project, “Be Prepared 2Stop,” rallied our community back in 2011. That’s because it was a project that so many in our community made possible and because it still impacts our local driving today. John Blaisse as a young scout That Boy Scout was 15-year-old John Blaisse, son of Jean Blaisse and Bob Blaisse, the Publisher of this magazine, Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. In Newtown Township, stop signs command our road intersections. So many stop signs that perhaps over a million car stops have occurred since teenager John Blaisse was inspired to conduct his Eagle Scout Project in service to his hometown. That inspiration led John to rally his community towards safer nighttime driving by the benefit gained from stop signs that better reflected headlights so drivers could be prepared to stop. Now age 26, that Eagle Scout is all grown up and recently married. In his freshman year at Archbishop John Carroll High School in Radnor — and still a year away from being a licensed driver himself — John noticed while being driven home from school 14

one day that the stop signs at intersections suddenly no longer had reflector strips running down each signpost. When he asked his dad why, John’s father explained they had just crossed into Newtown Township, and that those reflector strips (a new thing at that time) would likely be added by Newtown Township in the future. But the future Eagle Scout did not want safe driving to take a back seat in his hometown. So John decided to make it his personal Eagle Scout John installing reflector strips on Project to have similar reflecour neighborhood stop signs tor strips added to every stop sign in Newtown Township so headlights would better reflect more noticeable warnings for drivers to Be Prepared 2Stop. The Scout’s goal was fewer car accidents and perhaps to even save lives. The Scout with the rank of Life also hoped to earn his rank of Eagle, which requires a Scout to demonstrate significant leadership among his peers while conducting a service project in the community.
With Newtown Township approval, John went about requesting that businesses and residents adopt a stop sign, or even an intersection with multiple stop signs, all of which would be retrofitted with a light reflective strip installed down each signpost. With each $20 donation to John’s Boy Scout Troop 315, which is chartered by St. Anastasia Church, the future Eagle Scout purchased a reflector strip from a municipal supplier. To help rally the cause, each “adopted” stop sign also gained a small Be Prepared 2Stop sticker on the back of each sign, to memorialize the project and the name of the person, family or business that contributed to fund the reflector retrofit of each stop sign.
Dotzman. The couple met while attending college together at DeSales University, where Lyndsay majored in Education and was Captain of the DeSales Softball Team. John majored in Psychology and was the President of the DeSales Student Government Association. The couple graduated together in 2018. Today, Lyndsay works as an elementary school teacher, and John is a talent acquisition consultant to infrastructure engineering firms. Mr. & Mrs. John Blaisse exchanged their wedding vows on July 17 at St. Jude Church and Shrine in Chalfont, with a reception following at Normandy Farm Hotel & Conference Center in Blue Bell. After enjoying an extended honeymoon touring beautiful Iceland, the couple now resides in nearby Westtown Township and are well Prepared 2Start their married life.

Grief’s Journey: From Disbelief to Remembering How an individual deals with grief is as unique and diverse as they are. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. There are, however, unhealthy and healthy ways to navigate through this emotional battleground so that instead of sadly reminiscing about your loved one’s final days, grief can bring you to a celebration of wonderful memories. Right after a painful loss, it often feels monumental to think about the memories, happy or sad. It’s important to pace yourself and remember that you are on no one’s timetable but your own. While grief can be debilitating if left undealt with or put on the back burner until a “better” time, you can go as fast or as slow as you need to, for self-preservation. Sometimes the thought of getting through another day seems insurmountable, so don’t look at dealing with an entire day.
Take whatever time increment seems doable to you at that point. Let’s say you decide that you can handle getting through the morning, just the morning. Beyond that, don’t even worry about what you have to deal with. Still, there will be times when dealing with the morning just seems too big. So think about getting through the next hour or the next minute, or sometimes just getting through the next few seconds is all you can manage. That’s ok. This is your journey and you choose the parameters.

Once you’re able to handle things for whatever period of time you set, teach yourself to correct your own thought process. It’s actually easier than you might think. The next time you feel yourself spiraling down the deep, dark hole of loss, stop yourself. Whatever thought was making you sad, replace it with a happy memory. What are some of the fondest memories you have of your loved one? What did they do that always made you
laugh? What enjoyable special events, vacations or holidays stand out in your mind? Sometimes, once you get started recalling happier memories, you’ll find it hard to stop, and that’s ok too. You’ve been through a life-altering loss. Now make sure the way it alters your life is more like a celebration of a wonderful human being you knew and loved. NS

The Crucial Importance of Proper Attic Ventilation Late summer or early fall is a good time for homeowners to check out their attic or have it inspected so any repairs can be done before winter, when ventilation is most important. The initial inspection of a residential building starts by analyzing the existing roof ventilation design. Tell-tale signs of poor attic ventilation are soft or delaminating plywood, mold, musty odor, and rust on the nails seen on the underside of the deck. When one or more of those conditions is present, ventilation improvements are warranted.
which can cause catastrophic water damage and mold. This is similar to when condensation forms in the summer on the outside (warm side) of a cold glass of iced tea. The only way to stop these vapors from condensing into a liquid in your attic is to combat them with cool fresh air from the outside. This information will help you monitor your own attic for proper ventilation, and help you determine if an upgrade would be a good way to protect your investment in your home. NS
A History About Why Your Attic Ventilation Could Be Faulty Throughout the evolution of the construction industry, there have been some missteps, specifically in regards to the interaction between roofing and attic ventilation. Until the 1950s, the typical materials were slate, tile and cedar shake, all of which were typically installed on actual wood boards, and all of which “self-ventilated” or were more “breathable.” The attic conditions under those roofs would perform, even with just a couple gable vents or windows on the exterior walls. There was never a real concern for condensation or mold. During the construction boom of the 1950s, self-sealing asphalt shingles and plywood were installed regularly on residential roofs, with minimal attic ventilation. Homes were still being built without overhangs (soffits). It took almost 30 years for the current ventilation model to be regularly implemented. The basic idea with proper attic ventilation is to make sure the amount of “intake” airflow is greater than or equal to the amount of “exhaust” airflow. This is accomplished primarily by soffit vents for intake air and ridge vents for exhaust air. In modern construction, the intake air typically comes from a continuous slot or perforated soffits, essentially holes that allow air into the attic space from under the overhangs. The exhaust is typically achieved by adding a ridge vent, another continuous slot at the peak of your roof where the air leaves the attic space. Attic ventilation is important in the summer, but it is crucially important in the winter months when the heat is on. As heat rises through the walls and ceiling, it makes its way into the attic space. With that heat loss is also vapor loss. When those warm vapors hit the cold underside of the plywood (cold due to, for example, snow on the roof), condensation will occur, 18

Business Profile
The Law Office of Deborah M. Truscello by Sheila Turner-Hilliard
Photos courtesy of Deborah M. Truscello
Since 1993, the Law Office of Deborah M. Truscello has been providing legal representation to residents of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The office is a full-service law firm providing counsel in all areas of personal injury, work accidents, divorce, custody, real estate, wills, estates and social security disability. Deborah (“Debbie”) Truscello, a civil trial attorney for the past 32 years, is honored to help Delaware County residents get the legal representation and justice they deserve. “Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” said Debbie. “I truly care about my clients, and I work hard to get them the best possible outcome while being mindful of their wallet.” Her personal experiences combined with her expertise as both a trial attorney and a judge are why her clients and colleagues describe her as qualified, consistent and compassionate. Debbie is a lifelong resident of Delaware County who was born and raised in Folcroft. Her parents were very involved in the community. Debbie’s mother was a community organizer, and her father served in public office and helped shape Pennsylvania’s Magisterial Court system. “My parents did a lot for our town, and our door was always open to family, friends and neighbors,” she said. “I was always right there by their side as they worked to improve our community.” Among the many community service projects her parents spearheaded was building a new town library when the old one was slated to close.
Judge Deborah M. Truscello (2nd row, far right) served as Magistrate from 1998-2005
Debbie attended grade school in the Southeast Delco School District. She attended high school in Delaware, at Archmere Academy, which is known for its rigorous college preparatory curriculum. She went on to study at Elizabethtown College, and while there, she was awarded a scholarship to study abroad at St. Paul’s and St. Mary’s College in Cheltenham, England. Debbie earned that scholarship after placing first in a Frenchspeaking legal debate about euthanasia. After studying abroad and earning her degree from Elizabethtown College in 1985, Debbie went on to study law at Capital University School of Law in Columbus, Ohio. She received her Juris Doctor (J.D.) in 1988 and began her career serving the residents of her hometown and surrounding Delaware County. Like most recent law graduates, Debbie first served as a law clerk, conducting legal research, preparing bench memos, drafting orders and opinions, communicating with counsel and assisting the judge during courtroom proceedings. She worked for one year for Judge Vincent Cirillo, the President Judge of PA’s Superior Court. The following year, she had the privilege of working under Judge Rita Prescott, the first woman to become a Delaware County Court of Common Pleas Judge. “Judge Prescott was a great teacher,” Debbie recalled. “She had me work on every aspect of a case, from pre-trial to post-trial and opinion-writing for civil and criminal cases.” Debbie said that Judge Prescott taught her how to make it as a woman in law and was instrumental in Debbie’s decision to establish her general counsel law firm in Media in 1993. With her law firm running smoothly, Debbie turned her eye toward an opportunity to serve her community from the bench. In 1998, Debbie was appointed and then elected in 1999 as Magisterial District Judge covering Folcroft, Tinicum and the Philadelphia International Airport. She said that during her eight years serving in that role, the sheer number and variety of cases helped her better understand the uniqueness of every case. “Because of where we were located, we covered cases that not only involved our local police force, but also state troopers and federal customs agents,” Debbie explained. “We handled 7,000–10,000 cases each year, and I am proud to say all with consistency and compassion.”

Some of Debbie’s most memorable and far-reaching work occurred during that time. As Magisterial District Judge, Debbie developed the Juvenile Mentoring Program to help troubled youths learn compassion and gain self-confidence. She explained that juveniles in her court learned that they would have to answer to the infractions instead of their parents paying a fine. “I had them read books about their favorite subject, write letters of apology, bring their school report cards to me and sent them to Elwyn to spend time with the physically and mentally challenged youth in our area.” Her work was so successful in reducing the number of repeat offenders that it garnered bipartisan support. She has also served as an arbitration panelist deciding cases in the Delaware County Courthouse.

All physical therapists graduating today complete a four-year undergraduate degree followed by three years of graduate school, to earn a Doctorate of Physical Therapy (only one year less than medical school). Much of that education is focused on studying differential diagnosis, anatomy, kinesiology, exercise techniques and patient safety in addition to radiology, pharmacology, nutrition and other health-related courses. No one except a physical therapist (PT) has the knowledge to incorporate your specific health history into a comprehensive program to include proper exercise technique, proper diet, safety and be able to monitor your vital signs and know how and when to adjust your program. Most of the better physical therapy practices offer in-house fitness programs, but even if space does not allow, a physical therapist can still design and teach you a program that you can continue at home or at a fitness facility of your choice. A PT can guide you through any specific exercise program you wish to pursue, from a water-based program to rock climbing, but often and more importantly, a PT has the knowledge and background to guide you away from activities that may be potentially harmful to you. Exercise is SO important to us all. Study after study reveals that exercise is the key to preventing or delaying most of life’s aliments from Alzheimer’s to arthritis and even many types of cancer. So when you are ready to get started, contact the healthcare provider with the most medical knowledge and
have them guide you through the paces. Contact your Physical Therapist. You will not be disappointed and you will certainly start feeling better.

Sal Tartaglia, Author of World Series Chronology: Compare, Contrast & Coordinate the Champions
Author Sal Tartaglia
by Holly Stupak Photos courtesy of Sal Tartaglia
Sal Tartaglia has been impressing his friends with baseball facts and World Series statistics since he was a boy growing up in Drexel Hill. “I was really good with memorizing baseball stats,” said Sal. “As a teenage baseball player riding the bus to games, I loved challenging my teammates with trivia about the World Series. It was tough to stump me!” Wanting to do something with all this knowledge, he began keeping track of highlights and stats of World Series games for 30 years and in 2019 published a book called World Series Chronology: Compare, Contrast & Coordinate the Champions. As its title suggests, the book compares contrasts and coordinates the World Series champs, specifically the years 1903 through 2018. It’s chock full of anecdotes and social and historical correlations. “What’s unique about baseball is how much the sport is tied to our country’s history,” said Sal. “It’s wrapped up in everything from politics and commerce to our culture.” Sal’s book differs from many of the books out there about baseball. “There are few, if any, dedicated books relating to just baseball,” he said. “And none that I've found that specifically delve into the fall classic.” The book provides a convenient way for baseball fans to find information. Readers don’t have to dig deep to answer questions like Who had the most sweeps? or What teams dominated a decade in their respective league?
Always a big baseball fan, Sal became especially passionate about the World Series when his 5th-grade teacher Mr. Blanchard brought a TV into his classroom so they could watch the Cardinals vs. the Red Sox in the 1967 World Series. “Because many games were played during the day back then, kids didn’t always get to watch the World Series,” Sal explained. “After seeing such an exciting game that year, I was hooked. I love my home team, the Phillies, but every year since 1967, I got excited for the fall classic, no matter who was playing.” Sal wasn’t just a baseball fan; he was also a ballplayer. Growing up in Drexel Hill, he played little league and eventually played varsity baseball at Upper Darby High School, where he was a student. At age 18, he enlisted in the Navy, and after his twoyear stint, he was able to pick up his baseball career again and play for the Delco League, a semi-pro league. It was around 1986 that Sal officially started keeping track of his World Series stats on his typewriter. “I was really old school,” said Sal. “I used an IBM typewriter to start putting all of my information together. I was even cutting and pasting pictures and going to Staples to make copies.” During this OUTDOOR POWERhere EQUIPMENT & REPAIRS time, Sal was also raising a family in Broomall with his

wife Tracy. As a young girl, Tracy’s family had moved from Overbrook to Broomall, and when she and Sal married, they agreed Marple would be the perfect place to buy a home. Their two children Marissa and Sal Jr. attended Marple Newtown schools, and Sal Sr. got to spend afternoons on the ballfield watching his son play baseball for Marple Newtown High School.
Sal Tartaglia’s book: World Series Chronology: Compare, Contrast & Coordinate the Champions
For years Sal worked in the construction industry and considered his collection of World Series statistics a hobby. Eventually he compiled all of his notes into a red binder, and with some encouragement from friends and family, he began to think he had something there. “People were telling me I should write a book,” he said. “I realized that what I could put together was different from what was already out there as far as baseball statistics books.” After self-publishing his book in 2019, he is now able to do his own self-promotion through social media and word of mouth.
So what’s next for Sal now that he published his first book? Starting September 30 he’ll be partnering with Sirius XM radio personality Mark Mancini to do the “Liberty Bell Smack,” a Philly-Style show on Thursdays from 6-7 PM on WWDB 860 AM & 97.5 FM. And for people who already purchased the book, he understands he’s got more World Series games to cover. “My website will include an addendum so that readers can continue to get the most current information about the latest series,” he explained. World Series Chronology: Compare, Contrast, & Coordinate the Champions is the perfect gift for any baseball fan. It makes a great coffee table book too! To purchase a copy, go to Amazon.com and for more information, visit www. WorldSeriesChronology.com or visit Sal’s Facebook page @ World Series Chronology. NS

Autumn Tips for Seniors Autumn is all about change: The change of the leaves to beautiful autumnal hues and the change of weather to more comfortable, cool temperatures. As our region begins the transition to fall, seniors should take stock in their own homes, to make sure they are ready for the changes in the season. Here is the essential checklist to ensure you are safe and healthy this fall. Protect Against Falls: Speaking of fall… Take this opportunity to make a change to your home to ensure there are no tripping hazards that make it easy for you to fall. You can help prevent this by installing non-skid pads in the shower and grab bars to ensure you can walk safely around your home. This is a great time to make sure your house is free of excess clutter. Take your time, but make sure your home is safe for you to move about freely.
We Make Finding the Right Senior Housing Simple! Call TODAY to learn more about our FREE Senior Housing Services!
Schedule Your Annual Physical: Call and schedule your annual check-up to make sure you are keeping yourself healthy! Get Flu/COVID Vaccines: This is the start of the cold and flu season, so it would be a wise decision to keep up-to-date with your vaccinations. Protect yourself against all viruses and germs this fall. Keeping yourself protected should be one of your top priorities this season! Check Your Batteries: If you use wood fire stoves, natural gas, propane or space heaters, make sure you change your smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector batteries. Check your detectors every month to ensure they are working properly. Always call a friend or family member for help if something isn’t working as you expect it should. Clear Leaves from Your Home: Although very pleasing to our eyes, leaves can cause a lot of trouble. If they become wet, they can become slippery, causing a fall hazard. Take your time and clean them up. They should be raked away from high traffic areas. You can always ask your grandkids or a neighbor for help. If you are dreading your fall “to-do” list, then maybe it’s time to take a look into a senior living community this fall. Take advantage of the free information and advisory services that are available for seniors who are looking at transitioning into an independent living or personal care community. That transition will allow you to enjoy the seasons rather than trying to keep up with your home’s “to-do” list. NS

Do I have to have 20% of the purchase price to put down to buy a home? Putting 20% or more down on your loan will help you qualify for the lowest interest rate and fees. However, the average down payment in the country is 6%. The minimum down payment on a conventional loan is 3%, on an FHA loan is 3.5%, and on a VA or USDA loan it is 0%. Each program has their own credit score requirements and income limits, and each person and property’s situation is unique. It is important to speak with your local mortgage lender to find out what type of loan is best for you.

Do I have to have excellent credit to buy a home? Your credit score is one of the biggest factors a lender will consider when determining your qualifications for a mortgage. A score of 740+ is considered “excellent” and will get you the lowest rates and fees available to you. A score in the 700-739 range is “good”, 630-699 is “fair” and 629 and below is “poor”. If your credit score is in the poor or fair category, conventional financing probably won’t work for you and you should ask your lender about FHA, VA, and USDA programs. Can I get a home for less than the asking price? Yes, you can! While the national media and Realtors are touting how high above asking price properties are selling, there are always bargains still to be had. If a property is sitting on the market for a few weeks, it is a good opportunity to make an offer below the asking price. If you are able to accommodate

How do I start the process of buying a home? Your first step is to contact either a reputable Realtor or mortgage broker to get started. They will ask about your budget, your desired area, and what your goals are around real estate. Do you want to move closer to family, work, or activities you enjoy? Do you want more or less space? Is the move financially motivated? By asking you these questions, the professionals can help guide you in the right direction. NS

History Spotlight
Newtown Square Hotel Gets Raided! by Doug Humes Photos courtesy of the Newtown Square Historical Society
Saturday night, November 24, 1923, and the joints were rocking along West Chester Pike. “High-powered whiskey, beers, champagne and wines” flowed freely at the Newtown Square Hotel and also at the Manoa Inn in Havertown. A jazz orchestra played and Jazz Babies and Flappers danced and drank. It was the Roaring ‘20s and all was right in the world. Captain Charles Smith of the Haverford Township police had other ideas. Prohibition had banned alcohol sales. Responding to local complaints, state policemen had been gathering evidence against both joints for several weeks, wearing plain clothes and purchasing the “high-powered liquor.” And so, the trap was set for Saturday night. The newspaper describes what happened then: “The Saturday night gaiety was at its height when State troopers simultaneously entered each hostelry and ordered proprietors, bartenders, patrons and members of the jazz orchestras to prepare for an unexpected ride to the police station. At Manoa, women screamed and for a few minutes the greatest excitement prevailed. A rush was made for the doors and windows by the women and their escorts, which brought the announcement from Captain Smith…that he had all exits guarded… After warning them to desist from starting trouble, he ordered them to enter cars and go to the police station.
Above: At the bar in the Newtown Square Hotel, several years before Prohibition RIght: The headline tells the sad story of the raid that night
More than 100 people were detained at the Haverford police station in Oakmont. Everyone had to give bond of $15 cash. Those who could not do so – including half of the women – were allowed to leave watches, rings and even overcoats as security before being released. The owners were charged with selling alcohol and keeping a disorderly house. Prohibition had unexpected side effects: Liquor was driven underground into speakeasies, and the supply chain was taken over by gangsters and bred more violent crime. Like today’s drug wars, people were arrested, and some were jailed for non-violent acts. It was a noble experiment to deal with a social problem. And it failed.

Celebrating Grandparents’ Day by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photo courtesy of Kelly Petras
Whether your name is Grandmom, Mom-Mom or Nana, Pop-Pop, Gramps or Nonno, there’s no denying that in the eyes of your grandchildren, you are simply the best! Though most grandkids would say that every day should be Grandparents’ Day, we pause to officially celebrate you on Sunday, September 12th. The idea for Grandparents’ Day began back in September 1969, when nine-year-old Russell Capper sent a letter to President Nixon, asking that a day be set aside to celebrate grandparents. Russell did receive a letter back from the President’s office, thanking him for his suggestion. But Russell was told that it could not be done unless a Congressional resolution authorized the President to make it official. Then, in the early 1970s, a woman from West Virginia named Marian McQuade started a campaign to officially dedicate a day for our beloved grandparents. She worked tirelessly with
Beth and Tom Barnes with their grandchildren, Colin and Connor Petras
governors, senators and members of Congress to ultimately have Congress pass the legislation and have President Jimmy Carter proclaim National Grandparents’ Day an official holiday. The first Grandparents’ Day was celebrated in September 1979, 10 years to the month after Russell Capper’s letter.

September 2021
To honor and recognize the special bond between grandparents and their grandchildren, we asked our Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors about their experiences, memories, traditions and unique connections they share. When it comes to special bonds, eight-year-old Connor Petras and his five-year-old brother Colin literally can’t get much closer to their grandparents. “Babby and Poppy live right down the street,” Connor exclaimed. “We are so lucky that we get to see them every single day!” Babby (Beth) and Poppy (Tom) Barnes said that the best part of being grandparents is having more time to enjoy and interact with Connor and Colin without having the work and stress of being parents. Beth said, “We feel so much joy when the boys hug us and say how much they love spending time with us.” From game nights to family dinners and summer days in Sea Isle, fun is always on the agenda. “Babby loves to have dance parties and play games with me,” Colin gushed. Connor said that Poppy is THE BEST baseball coach and loves to take him fishing. Both boys laughed when they said that going places with Babby and Poppy is so much more fun because they
always get us extra treats. That must be a grandparent thing! No matter the physical distance between grandparents and their grandchildren, there are many ways to celebrate this month. Today’s technology makes communicating face-to-face a simple reality. Grandparents can share stories about what life was like when they were kids, their hopes, dreams and family history. Grandkids can learn from their grandparents’ wisdom and experiences and share their own stories, accomplishments and plans for the future. Grandparents’ Day doesn’t have to be limited to blood relatives either. One of Marian McQuade’s goals in creating this holiday was encouraging younger generations to “adopt” a grandparent in their community or local nursing home. She stressed that the benefits are mutual: Building solid relationships boosts social connections, helps ward off depression and provides a loving and healthy environment. Grandparents Day is an opportunity to treasure that connection and spend some quality family time together. Making an effort to spend time together — even if it’s just talking — is often the stuff that future fond memories are made of!

Updating Your Decor with Glass & Mirrors These days, it’s pretty easy to find decorating ideas and suggestions by watching TV shows about renovating or flipping houses, or by using a more targeted approach like searching the internet using specific parameters to get ideas on your exact decorating concept. If you’re currently interested in considering ideas using decorative glass and mirrors, this is your lucky day. Utilizing custom-cut mirrors as decor can be something extravagant like designing a wall mirror installation. It can also be something that simply adds depth and dimension by using a mirrored backsplash in the kitchen. The sky’s the limit on this type of decorating.
One very popular trend is to install a “larger than life” mirror in your foyer where you greet guests and family as they enter your home. That mirror helps your guests do a quick selfcheck to make sure everything is in place upon arrival. For even more impact, you could frame a behemoth-sized mirror with a beveled mirrored frame. Mirrors in the bathroom are a given, but some of the newest trends and inspirations include a half-wall-sized, tri-fold mirror that lets you see from multiple angles.

One style idea that’s extremely popular right now is filling your wall with a collage of pretty and eclectic smaller framed mirrors of just about any size or shape. These will stand out as more a piece of art than the typical simple mirrored wall. Another clever way of making mirrors a central decor theme within your home is to create a fun or dramatic interplay between two mirrors, both positioned to highlight the view of a special art piece or family treasure.
the traditional stained glass window, to adding etched designs that can exhibit a modern frame to some interesting piece of glass, to using a repeating pattern of an etched design throughout, making it glass artwork. Decorative glass and mirrors as style elements within your home can be unique, one-of-a-kind displays that show true artistic prowess and give your guests something very special to look at. NS

Matthew Wzorek had a smile that could light up a room, even earning him the nickname “Smiley.” His parents Rebecca and Barry Wzorek said that he brought joy and happiness to everyone around him, and he wanted to make the world a better place. Matthew was just seven years old when he passed away suddenly in 2020, changing the Wzorek’s lives forever. Looking for a way to keep his bright light shining, they founded Matthew’s Moonlight Foundation. “We want Matthew’s life to be the inspiration, not his passing,” said Rebecca. Matthew was a second-grader at Worrall Elementary school who loved baseball, flag football, legos and traveling with his parents and big brother Jacob. Whether at school, the playground or a local sports field, Matthew was known for his genuine kindness and friendliness. “Matthew’s personality was always to be kind,” his mom said. “He loved helping his younger cousins, making someone in his class feel comfortable, even chatting up a stranger. That was just his nature.”

When Matthew passed away, the Marple Newtown community rallied around Barry, Rebecca and Jacob, even creating a GoFundMe page for the family. Inspired by Mathew, and through the generosity and support of the Marple community, the Wzoreks wanted to do something to pay it forward. To help other grieving families and families experiencing hardship, they donated the money from the GoFundMe campaign to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “We wanted to give other families who’ve lost a child or who had a sick child the chance to visit Matthew’s favorite place: Disney World,” said Rebecca. This past year the Wzoreks were able to expand the reach of Matthew’s light by creating the Matthew’s Moonlight Foundation, whose mission is to honor Matthew through acts of kindness. They chose the name because of the profound meaning of the word moonlight. “No matter how dark the night is, the light of the moon will always shine to make the night brighter,” said Rebecca. “It’s a reminder that there is always hope. Through the foundation, we can use Matthew’s

beautiful light to help ease the burden that many families in the Delaware Valley are dealing with,” she added. Led by Matthew’s parents, the foundation’s board members include Cara Wzorek, Daniel Horowitz, Jonathan Horowitz, Jason Katz and Becki Kapelusznik, all of whom bring a unique set of skills. “ We make a great team. All of our professional, educational and personal experiences really complement each other,” said Rebecca. The first initiative of the foundation was a toy drive for Kisses for Kyle, a local charity that helps families battling childhood cancer. “We chose this charity because of the foundation’s understanding that an entire family is affected when a child is battling cancer or has passed away,” said Rebecca. “We understand firsthand how other children in the family can feel left out while attention is focused on grieving.” In honor of Matthew’s eighth birthday in June 2020, the foundation collected gifts to donate to Kisses for Kyle’s Birthday Klub. This past June, the foundation did another toy drive and the results far exceeded last year’s contributions. In July 2021 Matthew’s Moonlight Foundation partnered with the Newtown Square Petticoat League (NSPL) to hold the foundation’s first annual softball tournament. “The tournament was a huge success,” said NSPL board member and close friend of the Wzoreks, Jeff DiTrolio. “Matthew was extremely special to my family. So, to see the teams come together to raise awareness of the foundation was a great way to honor his memory.” Teams came from all over the Delaware Valley and even South Jersey to compete in the 3-day tournament and proceeds went to the foundation. “It was an all-around great effort,” added Jeff. “After the tournament, I received so many messages about how well it was run. We’re planning to make it an annual event.” Next up for the foundation is a golf outing and luncheon on October 7th at Paxon Hollow Country Club. “This is our first major event and we’re very excited about it,” said Rebecca. “It will be a great day of golf, raffles, food and fun!” Supporting the foundation through Kisses for Kyle, the softball tournament and the upcoming golf outing are not the only ways the community honored Matthew this past year.

On the one-year anniversary of Matthew’s passing, the Marple Newtown community “Lit it Up Blue for Matthew.” Homes, porches, trees and businesses were all lit up in blue in a show of support and love for the Wzoreks during the month of February. The organizers chose blue because not only was it Matthew's favorite color, but it symbolizes empathy, peace, imagination and heaven. “It was amazing to drive through our community and see how many people were thinking about Matthew,” said Rebecca. “The community’s support was so comforting to us.” Matthew was also honored by the Marple Township Little League, with a field in his name. The sign by the field reads: Matthew was always the kid who would happily lend a hand, cheer up a teammate, make a new friend, talk up a stranger, and in general make the world a better place. “Matthew was such a kind soul, even at such a young age,” said Rebecca. “The best way to honor him is to help families who have gone through the same type of tragedy that we have.” For more information on how to keep Matthew’s light shining, visit www.MatthewsMoonlight.org or visit their Facebook page for event updates. Why Your Lawn Benefits from Core Aeration and Over-Seeding With the heat of summer coming to an end and fall quickly approaching, core aeration and over-seeding should be seriously considered. To fully enhance your lawn, these two treatments should be performed annually. Core aeration is a method of lawn treatment where a machine with hollow tines mechanically removes plugs of soil and thatch from a lawn. Over-seeding, on the other hand, involves no soil penetration, and instead plants grass seed directly into the lawn. Core aeration reduces soil compaction, whereas over-seeding improves the quality, variety and color of your grass. Over-seeding introduces new grass seed, which fills in bare or thin areas and helps thicken existing turf. Over-seeding also builds resistance to disease by incorporating different seed blends, reducing the risk of disease that can wipe out entire lawns. Overall, aeration and over-seeding help reduce weeds that tend to grow in areas where grass is thin. A thick lawn is defensive against weeds. Core aeration and over-seeding help improve your lawn in many ways. For example, aeration reduces soil compaction and allows grass roots to grow deeper and locate moisture during hot/dry summer months. It also reduces thatch caused by grass clippings from mowing, and creates a less favorable environment for pests and diseases to thrive. Soil compaction can occur when there is regular traffic on your lawn, such as children playing or dogs going for walks.
In addition, newly-built homes also tend to experience compacted soil from the construction traffic. If you think your lawn may have soil compaction and could benefit from aeration and over-seeding, here are some quick tests you can conduct. Examine several small patches of grass. Shallow roots indicate compaction, which results in water and nutrients not being able to travel as easily to the roots. If the grass is not growing as quickly as it should, or if it is taking on a yellow color, then there’s a high chance that the lawn has compacted soil. Most residents who are on a full fertilization schedule benefit tremendously from core aeration and over-seeding. The remaining fall fertilization applications that happen after this service will help maximize germination of the new seed throughout fall and winter months. This results in a lawn that’s ready for a great start in the spring. If you’re not on a full fertilization application schedule, consider doing so for the following season. At least six fertilizer applications are required to see best results. Consider core aeration and over-seeding for your lawn, especially if you think your lawn is experiencing soil compaction. With these methods in place, your lawn will be back to growing lush, healthy grass. NS

The Pandemic’s Effect on Your Home’s Carpet and Other Surfaces Before most states went into “lockdown” in March 2020, to attempt to halt the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the carpet cleaning industry standard for cleaning carpets in an “active household” (a home with kids and/or pets) was every six months, and annually for homes with typically less activity. During the last year and a half, many households became much busier than usual. Many people have had to face new challenges such as working and learning from home. Working parents and full-time students had to learn to coexist in their homes all day long every day. Perhaps your home is one of thousands of local area homes that had to withstand an up to 40% increase in use and foot traffic If that’s the case, the carpeting in your home understandably became more soiled and is in need of attention, to restore it to almost-new condition and to get back to a regular cleaning schedule. This may also be true for your upholstery, tile, grout and other surfaces. By using a professional for such services, you are protecting your investment in your home and its contents because professionals use more refined processes and products. As you consider scheduling a professional service to clean your carpeting, ask about the cost to also clean your upholstery, tile, grout and hard surfaces.
When choosing a carpet-cleaning professional, ask if their cleaning process is “multi-stage,” which ensures that all dry soil is removed prior to their next stage of cleaning, which is to remove dirt left by shoes, kids and pets. The best carpet-cleaning process makes your carpets dry within an hour, and also makes your carpets stay cleaner longer than other methods. Newer products that have become popular such as luxury vinyl tile and other waterproof floors should be professionally deep cleaned with the proper safe solutions and equipment. You will be amazed at how professional cleaning processes and products can remove dirt and grime that was hiding in plain sight! Did you know that tile and grout in your kitchen can harbor and hold an amazing amount of soil and grease? Getting those surfaces deep-down clean requires multiple professional tools and products that are specifically designed to remove contaminants. Very shortly after that cleaning process, your tile and grout will be dry and look fantastic! One final piece of advice: When comparing cost estimates for cleaning your carpets, upholstery and other surfaces in your home, ask if the price for each cleaning surface includes all steps, processes and cleaning products or if there will be additional cost for add-on processes or products. Make sure you’re comparing “apples to apples” so that when it comes time to pay, there’ll be no surprises. NS
