Dear Friends & Neighbors, May is my favorite month. Why? Because May’s full month of spring is so welcome after a cold winter and April showers. And we will admire new flowers, honor mothers and fallen veterans, and attend First Communions and college graduations. And in May, we get to exercise our American right to vote!

This new issue of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine, in print and online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com, is Bringing People Together with some new beginnings with two new Sponsors of our hometown magazine. This month, we welcome a new Sponsor of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors: RPC Services, LLC Roofing & Siding. I met RPC Services’ owner Rob Coughlan recently, although Rob’s know-how for roofing, siding and residential contracting comes from over 30 years of experience. In meeting Rob, I also came to understand his passionate belief that every business must demonstrate unfailing integrity and should contribute to their community in which they do business. That’s exactly our kind of advertising Sponsor! Welcome aboard, Rob! (See RPC Services LLC’s first ad this month on page 21.) This month we also welcome Crissy Everhart of Crissy Everhart Photography as our new magazine Photographer. Operating her business from her studio in Historic Sugartown District of nearby Malvern, Crissy is a trained graphic designer and photographer, wife, mother and now a Sponsor of Newtown Square residents. You’ll see Crissy’s photography on our pages and her first ad as a Sponsor of our magazine this month on page 5. And you can discover Crissy’s joyful spirit and photography through her website at www.CrissyEverhartPhotography.com. Welcome to the team, Crissy, and Happy Mother’s Day! And I must wish Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, godmothers and foster moms who do more for their loved ones than is ever fully known. To the mothers on our magazine staff, Liz Burnett, Sheila Turner-Hilliard, Holly Stupak, Lisa Jeffries and Kim Cesati: Happy Mother’s Day and thank you for all that you do. And of course to Jean Blaisse, my wife, the mother of our four sons, and our magazine’s final proofreader before our magazines go to print. Jean, you are the proof that we are lucky men! Thank you for all you do for our family. Happy Mother’s Day! Enjoy this new issue of your hometown magazine, which Sheila and our advertising Sponsors have made possible for us to enjoy this month.

Resident Feature

Three Generations of Strong Mothers Raising Strong Daughters by Sheila Turner-Hilliard

We would like to thank

for sponsoring this month’s Resident Feature.

Connie Drumm with her great-granddaughter Kali Aguirre Photo by Crissy Everhart Photography www.CrissyEverhart.com

This month, we are pleased to introduce you to three generations of strong women: Connie, Germaine and Alexis. They are mothers, friends, business owners and community members whose strong roots yield beautiful blessings. Connie Drumm lives in Newtown Square with her husband Pat. You may have seen Connie mentioned from time to time on social media and in our local newspapers, for her fun and festive seasonal lawn and home decorations. Connie and Pat are often the winners of Marple Newtown’s annual 4th of July and Holiday Lights decorating contests. And if Newtown Square held a competition for Halloween, Easter, St. Patrick’s Day and Valentine’s Day, the winners would undoubtedly be the Drumm household. “Pat and I get cards and notes all the time from people who drive by,” Connie said. “They tell us how much they love all of the work we put into decorating and that they look forward to seeing what we will come up with next.” Connie’s granddaughter, Alexis Long, said that is just who Connie is. She loves to make others smile and is always the one who brings their family and friends together to celebrate. “Connie, or Fi (pronounced “fee”) as we affectionately call her, is always hosting parties at her house,” said Alexis. “In March, 6

she invited all the ladies in the family to a tea party, to celebrate International Women’s Day.” Connie treated her daughters, granddaughters and great-granddaughters to an afternoon of tea, sandwiches and dessert. She filled her home with beautiful flowers, teapots, balloons and banners. Alexis chuckled when she said, “Fi even set up an area with fancy scarves and jewelry for us to wear for the occasion.” Alexis said that one of her favorite days of the year is Newtown Square’s annual holiday tree lighting. “We start the day at Fi’s house, making crafts,” she explained. “Then we head up the street to watch the dance performances, sing Christmas carols and welcome Santa.” Alexis said that they all go back to Fi’s for hot chocolate after the festivities. Connie’s daughter, Germaine DePiano, said that when she was growing up, her mother always welcomed everyone into their home. “After my parents divorced, my mom worked very hard to support my four siblings and me,” Germaine said. “And even though she worked a lot of hours to support our family financially, she always made time for us and our friends.” Germaine said that her mother set an incredible example through her tireless work ethic. She was determined to raise her children

in a safe community where they would get an excellent education and make lifelong friends. “I just love this community!” said Connie. “I moved from Drexel Hill to Broomall in 1978, then to Newtown Square in 1997.” Connie graduated from Cardinal O’Hara High School and then earned a degree in Interior Design. She spent most of her career working in Broomall as an Admissions Counselor for RETS Electronic Schools. These days, Connie is busy putting her interior design skills to work in her own home and for local clients. Germaine, the oldest of Connie’s five children, is also a graduate of Cardinal O’Hara Above: Connie celebrating International Women’s Day with her daughters, granddaughters High School. In fact, Connie and Germaine and great-grandaughters were the very first mother-daughter duo to graduate from the school. “I remember being Right: A tea party for the ladies in the family interviewed about that by the local newspaper Photos courtesy of Alexis Long at Germaine’s graduation,” Connie laughed. Germaine went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Reading. She together to help families in need without a second thought. It’s continued her studies, earned her Master’s degree with a focus truly amazing!” on Special Education, and is a 2nd-grade teacher. She said that her own mother. “Everyone in this community is so friendly her mother not only positively impacts her family’s lives but and welcoming!” said Germaine. “Over the years, I have witContinued on page 8 nessed friends, neighbors and even complete strangers come

Resident Feature she leaves a lasting impact on her students. “Every year, my mom gets many notes and gestures of appreciation from her former students,” she said. “And many of those notes come from kids who had her in 2nd grade and are getting ready to graduate!” Alexis said that as she and her brother grew up, she watched her mother work full-time as an elementary school teacher and part-time at the Country Squire Diner to make ends meet. “And just like Fi, my mom always made time for me, my brother and our friends,” she said proudly. “I know I am the wife, mother and businesswoman I am today because my mom was — and still is — the best role model a girl could ask for.” Alexis shared one of the best memories from her childhood: “During the Christmas season, my mom would place special pairs of earrings on a beautiful Christmas dish, and every morning, we would pick out what earrings we would wear that day.” Alexis said she’s excited to share that unique tradition now with her own daughter. Alexis feels very blessed to be surrounded by strong, kind and loving women who support her dreams and future. After graduating from Marple Newtown High School, Alexis went on to study at Philadelphia University, where she earned both her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design and then her MBA. While in college, she spent time studying in Rome and then moved to New York City for a few years before returning home to begin a career in aesthetics and permanent makeup application. Today, Alexis is living a life full of joy and purpose with her husband Rodney and their three children: Kali (6), Mateo (3) and Cruz (1). As if life weren’t busy enough, they are expecting their fourth child in June, and Alexis will be celebrating her first anniversary as a Newtown Square business owner this coming August. Her business is Avec Elle Beauty Bar in the Newtown Square Shopping Center. It’s conveniently located just steps from the post office, restaurants and shopping. “Newtown Square is very special to me, so when it came time to choose a location for my business, the decision was easy,” she explained.

Avec Elle Beauty Bar offers a wide variety of services like permanent makeup, laser hair removal, injectable fillers, teeth whitening and intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments. And since beauty is more than skin deep, Alexis said they are excited to offer IV vitamin drip therapy, which can improve your hair, skin and nails, and also boost your immune system. They also offer IV vitamins for mental clarity, more energy and pain relief. Alexis said that she’s looking forward to her business getting more involved in the community by sponsoring local events, schools, sports teams and partnering with other small business owners. She said that Avec Elle recently participated in the annual Easter Egg Hunt hosted by Marple Moms Meet, and she’s planning to host a few of her own community events in the courtyard right outside her storefront. “Our family has a

long tradition of supporting and participating in our community events,” Alexis said. “We have been marching in the Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade since I was a little kid.” Her mom Germaine said that when Alexis and Mark were very young, she began her family’s tradition of making the hand-drawn floats, with homemade glittering red, white, and blue signs. “Alexis and Mark were Marple Newtown parade favorites for many years, and now it’s time for their kids to collect trophies of their own." These days, Alexis, Rodney and their kids go all out to complete in the hand-drawn floats category. Last year, Alexis and her family teamed up with her brother Mark, his wife Jessica and their daughter Daviana, to take 2nd place for their America the Beautiful portrayal. And to no one’s surprise, Connie and her husband Pat were awarded the Hometown Heroes award for the parade’s Red, White and YOU! home decorating contest. Thank you, Connie, Germaine and Alexis, for sharing your story of strong women raising strong daughters. Your commitment to your family and your community is inspiring – especially as we honor and celebrate all of the wonderful mothers in our lives.

Student of the Month by Lisa Jeffries

Marissa D’Ambrosio MAY STUDENT OF THE MONTH Marissa D’Ambrosio, May Student of the Month Photo courtesy of Demetra D’Ambrosio

The May Student of the Month is Marissa D’Ambrosio, a Senior at Marple Newtown High School. Marissa received a Certificate of Achievement in recognition of Excellence in Service to her school, her peers and the community. Not only is Marissa a straight-A student and a member of the National Honor Society, but she’s also the Flag Captain of the Marple Newtown High School Marching Band Color Guard. She wants people to know that the Marching Band Color Guard can be a fun extracurricular activity for kids who don’t play a musical instrument. Marissa takes great initiative in promoting, publicizing and recruiting for the Color Guard in every way she can, and would like to introduce it to middle school students so they can get started early. However, the most notable thing about Marissa is that she is the Founder and President of the Marple Civic Youth (MCY) organization. In 2020, when the pandemic changed everything in the world and caused social isolation and lack of camaraderie, Marissa decided to do something about it for herself, her friends, fellow students and even students from lower grades. approached the Marple Civic Association (MCA) with the idea of creating a Youth Division, and the MCA was eager to be supportive. Marissa started MCY for grade 6–12 students who reside in Marple Newtown, as an outlet to get kids together in leadership roles and to provide milestone events that were missing due to the pandemic. Teens from different grades and schools are invited to participate, so everyone feels welcome and included. Along with the volunteer opportunities that MCY has taken part in, including Kids Against Hunger, Austin’s Army events and the Domestic Abuse Project, what Marissa is most proud of is how much she and the other students in the group have grown in friendship, confidence, social skills, problem solving and life and leadership skills. She intends to remain active in MCY as Founding President while attending the University of Pittsburgh. Marissa, your Marple Newtown Friends & Neighbors congratulate you on this award and for taking the negativity and isolation of the pandemic and creating something incredible for everyone involved. How Much Power Does It Take to Charge an Electric Vehicle? Electric vehicles (EVs) are now part of the norm. You can find more varieties, styles and manufacturers than ever before, from small compact cars to tractor trailer-size vehicles, and everything in between. Advances in the lithium batteries and motors used in EVs, plus skyrocketing gas prices have made the manufacturing, purchasing, maintaining and driving of EVs much more economically sensible. Add to that how much fun EVs can be to drive, with amenities like large touch screens, advanced navigation and even autonomous driving, the numbers of EVs on the road will undoubtedly continue to increase.

with cords of sufficient length and plugs to adapt to any of the charging methods. NOTE: Tesla, Inc., requires a certified installer and licensed electrician to install the charging equipment and/or outlet, along with an electrical inspection. A report must be submitted along with proof of the work, permit and pictures of the installation to activate the manufacturer warranty. Publisher’s Note: Martella Electric is a Tesla-certified installer.

EVs can drive hundreds of miles on a full charge, depending on the conditions and type of driving you’re doing. Driving the speed limit, using accessories like heat or air conditioning and the number of passengers can all affect the driving mileage between charging stops. Public charging stations are increasing exponentially as mandated by the Federal Government. These charging stations can be found along all major interstates, in gasoline stations, hotels and even restaurant parking lots. However, one of the easiest and most sensible locations to charge your EV is at home. Of course, there are several considerations that require investigation and inspection before charging can take place at home. For instance, your home’s electrical service panel must have enough space for additional power circuits to be installed, and the level of your electrical service must be enough to accommodate the additional load of the car being charged. The location of the electrical panel in relation to the desired charging location is also an issue to sort out. Charging equipment can be installed inside the garage or outside in weatherproof enclosures. You’ll also want to explore different charging methods. One option is to purchase from the dealer a charging unit that’s specifically made for your EV. Another method is to install an appropriate power receptacle or outlet. Most vehicles come

Tips to Transform Your Space with Mirrors Mirrors are a versatile design feature. Not only do they maximize light and boost the sense of space, they also can add instant glamour and interest. Decorating with mirrors is easy to master when you learn some tricks of the trade. Here are five tips for how to use mirrors in your home. Make Your Mirror a Focal Point Just like pictures and paintings, mirrors also make great focal points. When you have space to fill above a mantle, a mirror with a beautiful frame can be shown off like a piece of artwork. If you have a room that doesn’t have an obvious focal point, hanging a mirror in an interesting frame can help draw your attention. Bigger Is Better Although a large picture or painting can overwhelm a room, a large mirror does the opposite. Choose one that's larger to make a smaller room look bigger. The larger the mirror, the more light it will reflect back, which can help with small spaces that don’t get a lot of light or are painted a dark color. Small mirrors usually look better in groups. Get the Mirror’s Height Right Always hang your mirror at an appropriate height. Large mirrors above a fireplace should be hung fairly close (less than 4" above) or actually sit on the mantel. Smaller mirrors that are hung on the wall like a picture should be positioned at eye level, especially if it will be used to check your reflection before you leave the house.

Ask about OUR NEW Cleaning & Surface Protection!

Make the Most of Your Mirror’s Reflection When hanging a mirror or placing it on a mantle, consider what will be shown in the reflection. A view of the focal point or other decor will make a room feel more inviting. Try a chandelier or a gallery art wall as a focal point to give it a “wow” factor. Choose a Glass and Frame Style to Match Your Decor With such a variety of styles and sizes to choose from, there are many options to introduce mirrors into your home. From traditional to modern, find a mirror with a shape and frame style that goes with everything else you have in the room. Now that you have learned how to decorate with mirrors, get inspired to add them to your home. From antique to vintage to contemporary styles, mirrors are an easy way to make an impact in any room in the house. NS

Purpose Does for Money and Investing What Balance Does for a Bicycle Learning to ride a bike can be a painful experience. While learning to ride, scraped knees and hands, bumps and bruises are the norm. Then you get balance and everything changes. The bike is now about freedom, independence and fun. Money and investing can occur in a similar fashion. Most people agree that money cannot buy happiness, but people spend much of their lives working for, saving, investing and protecting their money, all in pursuit of something they know won’t make them happy! Some people get out of that rut by eventually discovering and starting to work toward something much more valuable than money, something that truly fulfills them. They feel they’ve discovered their true purpose for life, why they were born and the purpose they were meant to serve. Prior to that discovery, money was really just their means to getting more and bigger things – a bigger portfolio, a bigger house, a new car, a golf club membership, etc. There’s nothing wrong with having those things, but does happiness last very long after acquiring them? Fulfilling your life’s purpose isn’t so much about how much stuff you can get, it’s about what you are creating for others and the world. Think about well-known, selfless and caring individuals who have worked hard and changed the world, people like St. Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa) and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Think of all the goodness they fought for, and the money they sought to be donated for the most deserving people, not for themselves. The impact of their efforts has long outlasted their lives. If you have never asked yourself what your true purpose for money is, what fulfilling your true purpose looks like, that may be why you don’t find money and investing to be very fulfilling. Without an ultimate altruistic goal, your experience of investing can be frustrating, confusing and disempowering. The great thing about discovering and fulfilling your true purpose for money is abundance. Regardless of how much money you have or don’t have, you can experience what you value most in the world. If what you value most is love, it doesn’t take one cent to express love, caring or compassion for someone. When you find that you have an unlimited supply of

something, you now have freedom and abundance. And isn’t that what can bring you long-term happiness? The first step toward discovering your true purpose for money is to look inside yourself. It’s not an easy thing to do, but the effort is well worth it. Then figure out how you can use your money and invest in a way that is in alignment with your purpose. Like being able to balance a bicycle, knowing your true purpose for money will have a deep and long impact on your life. NS

Reader Leaders Bringing People Together: We Need a New Student of the Month Sponsor For several months, I’ve been asked many times: What’s up with the restaurant opening at the site of the Italian restaurant next to the movie theater that closed two years ago? The short answer is: I don’t know. But that always leads to the same follow-up question: But isn’t that coming restaurant the Sponsor of your Student of the Month feature? The answer to that question is even shorter: No longer. As a business owner who serves the advertising needs of other businesses, I know what it takes to launch a new business. Sometimes new details result in new challenges that can strain the best-laid plans and force a reset. Time will tell for that planned restaurant.

Here’s what I do know: We now need a new Sponsor for our monthly Student of the Month profile. That feature is the gem of our magazine’s premium advertising opportunities because a local business is a Sponsor of the Marple Newtown community while also being recognized as a champion of youth. A local business will shine as the Sponsor of our Student of the Month feature, which recognizes Excellence in Service by various 7th–12th graders who live within the borders of our Marple Newtown School District but attend any school or who are home-schooled. (See this month’s Student of the Month profile on page 10.)

Business Profile

Your European Performance Specialists by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of Mike Forbes

Premier Eurocars, previously known as Don Galbraith Motoring, has been in business on the Main Line for over 30 years. They have built a solid reputation for high-quality and personalized service for all makes and models of Porsche, Audi, BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and other fine European cars. Located at the intersection of Old Lancaster, Waterloo and Devon State Rds in Devon, Premier Eurocars is hard to miss: They’re located in the historic building that served as a toll house in the 1700s before becoming a tenant’s farmhouse in the 1800s. Then in 1908, the building was home to the Devon Tea Room, with the newly constructed barn serving as a carriage repair shop. In 1914, the carriage repair shop became a car dealership until 1920. Then, during WWII, the Tea Room closed and became the office for the repair and car sales location it is today. From 1990 to 2012, Don Galbraith Motoring’s focus was primarily on

Porsche brand automobiles. But when Mike Forbes purchased the business from Don in 2012, he expanded the business to service more of the popular German automobile brands seen on our roads today. Mike explained that not only do they service newer model vehicles, but they have expert technicians that can work on vintage and classic cars as well. “We have the knowledge, experience and the latest diagnostic capabilities to handle everything from simple oil changes to full mechanical restorations,” he said.

Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors May 2022

Premier Eurocars’ technicians are specifically trained and have the expertise to work with both modern and vintage models. “Many of our customers have an air-cooled Porsche such as the 356, 911 or 930 models, as well as many older BMWs and Mercedes models commonly seen on our lot,” Mike said. “The majority of our business today is servicing and repairing those cars that are just out of warranty from the manufacturer, using the same sophisticated diagnostic tools available to the dealerships.” Premier Eurocars also specializes in selling select used Audis, BMWs, Porsches and

Volkswagens. They not only have an impressive inventory of cars to choose from, but if they don’t have what you’re looking for, they will use their extensive network of sources to find the car of your dreams. Aside from your typical automobile repairs, Premier Eurocars can also work with your vehicle’s service warranties and even provide extended warranties on the cars they sell. They’re also a certified Tire Rack installer for all makes and models of vehicles, from sedans to full-size SUVs. At Premier Eurocars, delivering quality service is paramount, but so is being a cost-effective alternative to a dealership. “We competitively price our parts sources and benchmark our labor charges below area dealerships and other specialty shops,” said Mike. “Our technicians are skilled in Bosch automotive parts and are Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified and/ or factory trained. We’re proud to be able to offer you dealership quality, knowledge, and experience at reasonable prices.” Mike and his team understand and appreciate that when a customer comes to Premier Eurocars for service, they expect quality service from a team they can trust. “Our customers know that their satisfaction is our number one priority,” Mike said. “We are not only

upfront and honest about repairs and pricing, we also follow up each appointment with a phone call or text message, to be sure the job was done right.” Mike definitely knows a thing or two about customer satisfaction. Prior to owning Premier Eurocars, he was instrumental in developing and implementing automotive customer care programs for dealerships nationwide, resulting in significant improvements in their J.D. Power Sales and Service ratings. It’s no surprise then that Premier Eurocars has consistently been named Best of the Main Line year after year and that their website is full of 5-star reviews and glowing customer testimonials. Mike said that a big reason for that is clear communication, reasonable prices, expert guidance and honest advice. “We are proud of our reputation as one of the most trustworthy auto repair facilities in the Philadelphia region.” When we asked Mike why he decided to be a Sponsor of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine, he said, “Being in the center of the Main Line, we like to support both the immediate surrounding community and their neighbors. Newtown Square is very close to us and many people drive past or shop on their way to the Rte 202 corridor. It makes sense that Newtown Square residents know about us and how we can assist them.”

History Spotlight

Historic Newtown Square Day by Doug Humes Photos courtesy of Newtown Square Historical Society

When I first joined the Newtown Square Historical Society in the mid 1990’s, there was very little going on: a monthly public program but not much else. And then Sam Coco and Stan Short, along with Jan and Sid Elston and some others had this idea for Colonial Day, and a tradition was born. The original idea was to celebrate Colonial history. According to a news article, “It’s going to be like a little Williamsburg,” said Chairman Sam Coco. “We’re going to have people in costume doing colonial crafts like carpentry, smithing and colonial art.” On June 10, 1995, we hosted that first celebration. A fife-anddrum corps kicked off the event at the Paper Mill Museum. George Washington, Ben Franklin and Betsy Ross were in attendance at the opening ceremonies. Costumed guides provided tours of eight of the historic locations in the township. Isobel

Snyder taught students at the Octagonal School House. Several private homes were open for tours. Sam sold ads for a program book to raise money for the Society. We were not sure what the outcome would be, but it was well received, and that first year has served as a template for what has become an annual event.

We celebrated our 25th year last year, after a Covid hiatus. We have so much history to celebrate since Colonial times that about 10 years ago we switched the name to represent that broader time period: Historic Newtown Square Day. We have 5 sites on the National Register of Historic Places, and each year they are open for tours. In addition, we have a wonderful Railroad Museum at Drexel Lodge Park that participates; and Garrett Williamson features a different aspect of their campus each year – usually involving farm animals. This year, the historic 1742 Square Tavern will host the 1st Continental Regiment (Colonial Re-enactors), Lenni Lenape Native Americans, a storyteller, sheep shearing, a beekeeper demonstration and honey, live music with Last Chance’s Ingrid Roseback and Jack Scott, antique cars, children’s activities and more. The Paper Mill House and Museum, the Quaker Meeting House, the Octagonal School, the Newtown Square Railroad Museum, St. David’s Church and the Bartram

THE CARPET WAREH USE AND FLOORING TOO!

Professionals ProvidingThe Flooring Solutions for Almost 70 Years It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you’re in the market for new carpet or flooring solutions. What type of carpet and what style are you looking for? Do you want wall-to-wall or a custom area rug? How about the latest in laminate or hardwood flooring? These decisions about what you should buy can be challenging, but where you should buy is easy. Fortunately, the best option for your home or office is right around the corner at The Carpet Warehouse. Conveniently located in the Lawrence Park Industrial Center, The Carpet Warehouse has been providing high-quality flooring solutions to customers in Delaware, Chester and Montgomery Counties since 1944. Jim Casar has owned and operated The Carpet Warehouse for 32 years. He is proud of their reputation as a trusted service provider. “I worked for the previous owner for many years before I became the owner,” he explained. “The Carpet Warehouse has been around for so long because we provide our customers with great service along with affordable prices.” There are many benefits to shopping local over large retail stores. Rather than treating you like just a sale, the friendly staff at The Carpet Warehouse treats you like a person with unique flooring needs. Jim explained that seasoned professionals come to your home or office to measure and discuss Top-quality Mohawk brand flooring

the flooring choices according to your space and lifestyle. They don’t push pricing or products dictated by a corporate office across the country. When you visit their spacious showroom in Broomall, you will see a selection of carpets, handmade area rugs, hardwoods and laminates that’s much more extensive than their national counterparts. That’s because the national chains focus on volume, selling a few of the most popular items in each category. But The Carpet Warehouse focuses on customer satisfaction and earning your loyalty and referrals. Showroom Manager Mike Strolli is determined to make your experience as convenient and straightforward as possible. “We have a showroom that's open seven days a week, so you'll be able to see and feel all of our different options,” he said. “We also have options for environmentally friendly carpet if you’re looking to go green.” Along with professional flooring installations, you'll also receive excellent services like free estimates, warranties and financing options. The Carpet Warehouse has partnered with trusted brands in finance to offer their customers the credit they need at competitive interest rates. So, whether you’re doing a home renovation, getting your home ready to sell or just refreshing your style, easily affordable credit options allow you the freedom to keep your cash handy for other projects or family needs. Jim said that the brands they choose to carry at The Carpet Warehouse are innovative, durable and quality crafted. “One of our top brands is Mohawk flooring,” Jim said. “Mohawk not only delivers a quality product, but they also take investing in our community seriously.” As a flooring retailer, Jim said they pride themselves on carrying innovative products that make life better for their customers and contribute to

a greater good. When you purchase Mohawk products, you are helping to support many nonprofit organizations like Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the United Way and Sunshine on a Ranney Day Foundation, which provides wheelchair-accessible spaces, bedroom makeovers and in-home therapy rooms for families of children with serious illnesses.

The Carpet Warehouse is located at 20 Park Way Ave, Broomall. Their showroom is open to the public Mon, Tues and Thurs 9am–5pm; Wed and Fri 9am–8pm; Sat 10am–5pm; and Sun 12pm–4pm. For more information or to request a free estimate, call 610-364-5352 or visit their website at www. CarpetWarehouseCo.com. NS

In addition to their line of Mohawk flooring solutions, The Carpet Warehouse is your source for a complete line of quality carpet and hardwood flooring from trusted manufacturers. Jim said, “Our extensive line of custom, handmade wool area rugs give our customers the ability to match their style, and a custom-bound area rug can be used to beautify and soften a floor in any area of the home.” When renovating or refreshing your home, it’s essential to know what type of flooring works best for each area of the house. Mike Strolli offered this example: Hardwood may be perfect for the den on the main floor but should not be installed in the basement. He also explained that when customers come in to look at options, they discuss how much foot traffic each room typically has, if there are any pets in the home, and what type, color and style of furniture is in the room. “We consider The Carpet Warehouse a hidden gem in Broomall,” Jim said. “We live here, work here and are proud to be a Sponsor of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine.” Jim and his staff encourage you to stop by the showroom to say hello, explore the showroom and schedule your free estimate.

THE CHANCE TO DANCE: Dance Studio Gives Special Needs Dancers Their Opportunity to Shine! by Bob Blaisse Photos courtesy of Sheila Turner-Hilliard

Learning to dance takes time, interest and effort. It can be hard work, but when that work is FUN, it can feel like PLAY! Newtown Square is blessed with a devoted dance teacher and community special needs advocate, Sheila Turner-Hilliard, whose studio From the Top Dance makes sure fun is part of every class. We’re thrilled that From the Top is an Expert Contributor Sponsor of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine. For the past 18 years, From the Top’s mission has remained steadfast: To teach dancers of all ages and abilities the fundamentals, techniques and performance of dance and movement with the utmost regard for each student's individuality and right of self-expression. “I grew up dancing in a studio that felt safe and comfortable, with all the other students, whether they were competitive or recreational dancers,” Sheila explained. “At a very formative time in my life, it was helpful to have such an outlet to be able to express myself, and I am proud that From the Top does that for our next generation of dancers.” In 2006, Sheila was asked by Ceil Matthews, a teacher with Marple Newtown High School’s Life Skills Program, to start a special needs dance class. Sheila enthusiastically agreed. “At that time,” Ceil explained, “I had a class of predominantly juniors and seniors with learning difficulties, poor social and

communication skills and a lack of confidence in their physical abilities,” she said. “I thought it would be a good idea if they had dance lessons to bolster their self-esteem and learn a few moves for their upcoming proms.” Sheila began teaching with a few fun props, a positive attitude and her portable CD player. Ceil recalled, “I had prepared my students for her visit, but most of them wanted no part of this activity. But after just a few minutes, Sheila had them laughing, clapping and trying new moves.” Sheila said that the success of the program is grounded in trust, understanding and good music. “Music has a way of connecting us and allowing us to express how we feel without saying a word,” Sheila explained. “I made sure that my students felt safe with me and that no matter their limitations, they could trust that I would be their biggest fan.” Ceil said that the highlight of that year was watching her students dance the night away at the prom. “Sheila helped open up a whole new world of confidence, risk-taking and socialization. We like to call her our Dancing Queen.” Word started to spread around the special needs community about From the Top’s dance classes. “We welcome dancers of all abilities into all of our dance classes at the studio,” said Sheila, “but I learned there was a need and a desire from groups of special needs teens and adults who attend day programs.” Those groups include students with a wide range of physical and intellectual challenges. “I have dancers with Down Syndrome and Autism, but I also teach students with Cerebral Palsy, traumatic brain injuries and a host of other challenges,” she explained. “Some of my dancers are verbal, some are not. Some are in wheelchairs or use walkers. And some wear noise-canceling headphones. In my classes, we adapt and embrace our differences.” Since 2006, Sheila has worked with five different special needs programs in Delaware County. She partners with the Delaware County Intermediate Unit, Community Interactions, Inc., AALIVE, and the Father Bill Atkinson Service Corps. She also hosts her own open enrollment class on Saturday mornings. “It is by far the most rewarding and fun part of my day,” she

said proudly. “Our dance classes are more like dance parties, where I am free to express myself just as much as my students. Some of them would probably say I tend to express myself a little too much!” Sheila has been recognized for her work in the special needs community. In November 2019, she was nominated by her students for the “Rose for Toni” award sponsored by AALIVE, an organization that offers adults with autism opportunities for socialization and awareness. She was also the recipient of Marple Newtown High School’s PEPPER award for her positive influence and commitment to her students in the Marple Newtown School District. Recently, Sheila began working with the Father Bill Atkinson Service Corps, teaching dance at the Haverford Community Recreation and Environmental Center (CREC). Founding member Mary Beth Malloy’s son Michael participates in those dance classes. “The Dance with Sheila class builds everyone’s confidence, all while getting a fantastic workout. The corps members, staff and volunteers all join in on the fun,” Mary Beth said. “But most importantly, Sheila gives the corps members the opportunity to express themselves through dance in a community setting that is so rewarding and meaningful.” To learn more about From the Top’s special needs classes, call the studio at 610-353-2623 or email Sheila at Info@ FromTheTopDance.com. Expert Contributor by Rick Thompson Thompson Custom Painting

Reasons Why Summer Is the Best Time to Paint Your Home Have you noticed that the exterior of your home seems to have lost some of its luster? Exterior house paint will give your home a facelift, add dramatic curb appeal and make it feel brand new. The warmer months are usually the best time to take care of outdoor projects. Here are some reasons why summer is the best time for exterior painting. Increase the Curb Appeal of Your Home Are you putting your home on the market this year? House painting in the summer can increase your property’s curb appeal. Having the exterior of your home painted is a great way to enhance its appearance. Not only will you drastically change your curb appeal, but your home will also look fresh and new. It can also increase the value of your home. Eliminate Exterior Signs of Winter Wear and Tear By the time fall, winter and spring have passed, your home’s exterior will be stressed. It will have withstood the cold and fought against the moisture of rain and humidity. You may have even noticed that the moisture has led to mold and mildew growth. Additionally, the sun can cause paint to crack, fade, flake and peel. This can reduce the protection that the paint provides to the exterior of your home.

THOMPSON Custom Painting

The Weather Is Warmer Summer is the best time for exterior painting because warm weather is perfect paint-drying weather. When temperatures are low, paint will not bind to the surface of your home, causing it to crack and peel. When temperatures are too high, the paint will dry and brush out too quickly. Mild temperatures allow the process to go quickly and efficiently, all while ensuring that the paint film has a good formation before it gets too hot. There Is Less Chance of Rain Nothing is more of a nuisance to an exterior paint project than a rain delay. Not only does this set your project back, but it can also put the progress so far at risk of being ruined. Choosing to have the exterior of your home repainted in the summer months can help ensure there are fewer interruptions to the project. If you’re considering repainting your home’s exterior, your first step is to plan around the climate and weather. Spend your summer doing the things you love and leave your painting project to the professionals. NS

Pampering Mom on Mother’s Day!

Our Community

by Sheila Turner-Hilliard

Making our mothers feel loved is so much easier than we could imagine. So why do we often find ourselves at a loss as to what to do for her or what gift to give? To show the special mom in your life how much you love her and how grateful you are for all she does, we’ve got a few ideas to pamper her in a special way. Let Her Take the Day Off That’s right. Give mom the gift she gives you every day by helping around the house. Make Mother’s Day a no cleaning, no cooking and no chores kind of day. Don’t let her do a single second of work because you’ve got that covered! Book Mother’s Day Brunch Her first meal of the day shouldn’t be anything less than scrumptious! Make reservations at the most delicious places in town. Many of our local restaurants are offering special Mother’s Day brunch, lunch and dinner menus. A fantastic meal is a perfect way to pamper mom (and you)! Look for Mother’s Day specials from these Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors Sponsors: Bright Spot Cafe, Casey’s Public House, Firepoint Grill and Rey Azteca Mexican Restaurant. An Afternoon for Her Once your stomachs are full, it’s time for the real fun! Does your mom dream of going to that great spa in town but doesn’t have the time? Does your mom want to go

out shopping for those shoes she’s had her eye on? Or has she been asking for the family to join her on a nature hike? Whether it’s a group activity or simply giving her time to go to the gym by herself, the whole family should be on board to make the day exactly what she wants. Gift Time Just like on your birthday, there comes a special time of the day when you can expect to be showered with gifts. Why not give her that special moment on Mother’s Day as well? For the stylish mom, try giving her a new tote bag or a piece of jewelry with her children’s birthstones. Remember that moms also love homemade gifts like cards, drawings and homemade treats! Spa and salon gift cards are always a good option, so head on over to Blush Salon and let mom choose the service that will make her happy. Other ideas are gift cards to her favorite nail salon, restaurant, shopping destination or her favorite place to have a girls’ night out.

MEXICAN RESTAURANT

Let’s face it: We owe a lot to our moms, and Mother’s Day is the perfect day of the year to show her how much you appreciate her and how much you care. A pampered mom is a happy mom — trust us! NS

The Marple Newtown community has a long history of honoring and remembering our servicemen and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. From decorating area gravesites to marching down West Chester Pike, we pause to pay tribute to our deceased military and their families. Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day, is a federal holiday observed every year on the last Monday of May. It originally began as a way to honor our soldiers who died in the Civil War, with the first national celebration taking place on May 30, 1868. After World War I, the holiday was expanded to honor all American war fatalities.

Our local veterans

officially adopted that holiday name in 1967. The following year, the passing of the Uniform Holidays Bill declared that Memorial Day would be celebrated on the last Monday in May regardless of the date.

Throughout the United States and in local communities, it’s common to visit cemeteries and decorate the graves of our deceased soldiers with flowers, wreaths and American flags. Other common traditions include raising the United States flag quickly to the top of flagpoles, lowering it slowly to half-mast Decoration Day was recognized as a federal holiday in 1938. to honor our fallen soldiers, then raising it again to full height By the end of World War II, the holiday was more commonly at noon, as a symbol of the commitment of the living to carry Now available a for classic farmhouse design, on our in fight freedom. referred to as Memorial Day, and the federal government

Spectators will enjoy performances by the Paxon Hollow Middle School and Marple Newtown High School Tiger Marching Bands, local Boy Scout troops and other local performers. Leading the parade in a police car will be US Army Veteran Brad Bitting, who was wounded three times and received two Congressional Medals of Honor for heroic deeds when he served in the Persian Gulf. The parade’s closing ceremony, which will be held at Post 805 and will include a rifle ceremony, will be led by Post Commander Gerald Nail. NS

The tradition of wearing or displaying red poppies to remember our military grew out of the famous poem “In Flanders Fields,” written during World War I by Canadian physician LieutenantColonel John McCrae. Below is the poem’s first verse.

Firearm Safety Begins with Firearm Education.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row,

Bring in your firearms for our Courtesy Safety Check Up.

Scarce heard amid the guns below. If you’d like to honor and remember our fallen military this Memorial Day, there are some local events you can attend and places to visit. On Monday May 30th, the Delaware County Veterans Memorial Association (DCVMA) will hold a short ceremony and wreath-laying at the Delaware County Veterans Memorial located at 4599 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square. The ceremony begins at 8:30am. In addition, if you would like to memorialize and celebrate the life and legacy of your veteran, DCVMA performs casket flag ceremonies at 5pm on the second Sunday of every month from April through November. The Marple Newtown Memorial Day Parade will take place on Memorial Day, Monday May 30th at 10am. The parade route starts at the intersection of Malin Rd and West Chester Pike. Then it travels eastbound on West Chester Pike to the American Legion Post 805. “After a two-year hiatus, we want to make the parade as joyful as possible,” said Demetrius Spiropoulos, First Vice Commander of the American Legion Post 805. “It’s a great way to connect with the community.”

Expert Contributor by Dave DiGregorio & TJ Dell’Arciprete Delaware Valley Septic, Sewer & Storm

Why Regular Septic System Pumping Is So Important The saying “Out of sight, out of mind” is never more true than when talking about septic systems. The best thing you can do for your system is to pump it out on a regular basis. All of the pipes from your house lead to your septic tank, so everything you use with water ends up in your tank. Just like with our own health, the better we take care, the healthier we feel. So the cleaner you keep your septic tank environment, the better the condition of your overall system.

pump every one to three years, because on average that’s how long it takes for solids to accumulate in the tank environment. Keeping accumulated solids and debris to a minimum helps to keep the effluent cleaner before it reaches the system’s drainage component. That is the main goal! Completing regular maintenance procedures costing just a few hundred dollars is much better than spending tens of thousands to replace your septic system drain fields.

Septic tank environments have three layers: The scum layer is made up of grease, carbohydrates, proteins, fat and oils, all of which are light enough to float to the top of the tank, while heavier debris settles to the bottom. In between the top and bottom layers, wastewater separates the upper and lower effluent, which is essentially water and small particles. The thicker the bottom layer of the tank, the more staining that’s left on the drain field soils after percolation. Known as the BIOmat, that staining is what makes drain fields fail and need replacement. With regular pumping maintenance, your septic system will last longer.

How will you know when it’s time for a septic system pumping? It all depends on a few factors:

Most people seem to think that once they pump their septic tank, it doesn’t fill back up for years, but that isn’t always true. It could fill back up within a week or so, depending on water usage in your home. It is recommended that homeowners

How many people live in your household? The more people, the more water you’re likely to use. The more water you use on a regular basis, the more often your tank will require septic system pumping. If you have a garbage disposal, you’ll typically need pumping more frequently because of the large amount of solids regularly entering your tank. With all these factors in mind, septic tank pumping is, on average, needed every one to three years. The cost of pumping is usually lower than a sewer bill, and it’s the best way to correctly treat and maintain your on-site system. NS

Picture-Perfect Pruning Pruning is the removal or reduction of problematic branches, limbs and stems from trees and shrubs. Pruning removes dead or diseased branches, and eliminates branches that chafe and could create an access point for insects and disease. Trees and shrubs also benefit from pruning because it helps manage their growth and structure, and encourages the development of new growth, keeping trees and shrubs healthy, strong and more disease resistant. Here are some basic pruning techniques and what they are used for: Crown Thinning: Removing smaller, weaker limbs from the canopy to allow more light to reach through to the center branches and to improve air circulation reducing weight and strengthening the trees overall stability. Dead Pruning: Eliminating dead, dying or diseased branches.

Reduction: Cutting back to lateral growth to control tree size. Removing small branches that are attached to the larger, heavier branches so that your trees don’t become too top-heavy. Elevating: Cutting back low lying branches, needed for clearance or aesthetic purposes. Pollarding: Removing most of the branches (done only when a tree is dormant, usually in the winter or very early spring) so that all that remains are the secondary branches and the main trunk or stem, to produce dense new growth. Less is definitely more when it comes to pruning. Excess pruning can shorten a tree’s life, affect its natural growth and

can cause trauma that will not heal properly. As a general rule, it’s usually best to cut no more than 25% of the foliage. Timing is extremely important when pruning. The best time to prune is during late winter or early spring, before new growth begins. The least desirable time to prune is immediately after new growth develops in the spring. It’s also advisable to limit the amount of pruning done in late summer, as new growth may be encouraged on some plants. This growth may not have sufficient time to solidify or become hardy before cold weather arrives, resulting in cold damage or winter kill.

It’s important not to cover pruning cuts with tree paint, which so many homeowners do. Research shows that sealing cuts or wounds on trees doesn’t speed their healing at all, and can actually promote decay and slow down the healing process. It’s best to simply let the cuts seal on their own. Unfortunately, many homeowners don’t take the time to research how to properly take care of pruning until it’s too late. Hopefully this article helps you have a better idea of how and when to prune, for the life of your trees and garden. If you still feel uncertain or uneasy about pruning your own trees and shrubs, contact a tree expert who can help with whatever you need. NS

Making a Successful Move to a Senior Community: Managing Separation Anxiety Moving into any senior community — whether it’s Assisted Living, a Personal Care Home or a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) — is a dynamic process marked by an array of transitions and unknowns. This transition can be stressful and sometimes traumatic for all involved if it happens abruptly. Family members are separating themselves from a loved one, and the senior is starting a new chapter of their lives.

to help a person through their most acute symptoms) and support groups (to help provide alternative thinking and experiences from those in similar situations), there are also more targeted management strategies to ease separation anxiety. Some family-centered actions to take include:

Some amount of separation anxiety is normal, although it becomes problematic when it disrupts a person’s life. When excessive displays of fear, worry or distress are seen, it can have additional negative effects on emotional function, family life and even the physical health of those involved.

• Stay calm, matter-of-fact and sympathetic. Acknowledge the stress for everyone and that these feelings are normal.

Strategies are available to manage separation anxieties. In addition to pharmaceutical interventions (prescription medications

• Treat the anxiety seriously and react with understanding and patience.

• Practice short-term separations. Schedule visits where the individual spends a day within the eldercare community, letting everyone involved experience the separation. These scheduled visits can include respite stays and/or joining resident activities within the community. • Prepare the senior for the separation by reassuring them the family will be communicating with them and seeing them regularly. The senior must develop an adequate sense of safety and trust in the new environment and with the new care team outside of the family. Family members need to maintain control over their own anxieties. If the senior senses distress, it may signal doubt and increase anxiety.

When it’s a parent, you’ll know how to make confident senior care decisions. The Oasis Process:

Separation anxiety is a potential issue for anyone in a family’s social network. It can be a stress point that contributes to a delay in making decisions, or worse, inaction at critical junctures. Failure to anticipate separation anxiety during the transition can create financial or emotional burdens for the family, while putting the senior’s health and well-being at risk. Having frank conversations based on facts and not hearsay, along with reliance on experts for assistance, are sound ways for managing separation anxiety. NS

Tips for Choosing Your Wedding Day Hair and Makeup Team Back in their day, your mother and grandmother (and mostly everyone) did their own hair and makeup for their wedding day.
