1st diploma programme in nursing 1963 at Charité der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin  3rd level programmes in Pflegewissenschaft, Pflegepädagogik and Pflegemanagement available since mid 1990s  ‚Dual‘ pre-registration nursing programmes (Bachelor Degrees) since 2004, with the publication of amended version of German Nursing Bill (Ullmann et al 2011, Stöver 2010) 

Nurse education at 3rd level to bring about improvement in patient care and treatment Changes in general population; average age 44 years (36 yrs in Ireland),1/5 of population aged 65yrs and over 2/3 of population aged over 65 years have at least two medical conditions Care of these patients is complicated by decreased levels of mobility, nutritional imbalances, decreased levels of cognitive functioning and various levels of pain / discomfort Advanced Practice assists in addressing complex patient needs (Ullmann et al 2011, Federal Statistics Office 2011)
