bethany fitton For this brief the Magic Lantern Festival Event that took place at Round-Hay park last year will become the subject for a A3 traditional print that celebrates it. The final print will be then displayed as part of the level 4/5 graphic design exhibition, the content which must be suitable for public viewing and be celebratory in nature of the event. The print will be displayed as part of the end of year level 4 and 5 graphic design exhibition, therefore this defines the target audience which as course members, course leaders and potentially professionals directly with the general public as the indirect audience. The audience will define the outcome for this brief as it will need to reflect personal skills as a designer to potential professionals whilst also being suitable for a wide range of viewership, therefore not explicit or unsuitable content for younger viewer. The poster will be being displayed amongst around 100 other poster designs therefore will need to stand out to attract attention. As professional will be visiting the exhibition this a effective chance to sell the work to future potential employers/intern ships for next year therefore standing as in the exhibition is vital. The poster whole include as pet that set it aside from the rest of the work. As the poster will be part of an exhibition celebrating leeds past events / Leeds culture therefore all the posters in the event will be for past events, due to this is aim of the poster is not make people visit the event but as visual celebration of the past event, celebrate what happened and what was achieved. This is not a functional event poster but a visual celebration.

brief

bethany fitton

The Magic Lantern Festival was an event stated in Leeds as a visual light installation representation of 2000 year old Chinese culture festival. ‘The event is a festival of light and illumination as well as Chinese culture. The event consists of 30 amazing giant lanterns, which represent Xmas, traditional Chinese culture. The aim of the event is express chinese culture towards a wider network of viewer, whilst helping Leeds to win city of culture as well as raising fund for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal as its official charity partner. ‘The Magical Lantern Festival is a spectacular fusion of art, heritage and culture.’ The aim of the poster is to visually celebrate and reflect the event, this will be done via the representation of the styles/looks at the festival or by reflect the ideas/ aims behind the events, (show the merging of cultures). One of the main theme and ideas of the poster should be surround the how the festival shows the cultures coming together in a celebratory event for all the family. The style of the poster should aim around child friendly themes as the event is a very family driven/aimed at children as seen by the inclusion of santa grotto and child suitable areas, which is show visually by the images and the lanterns at the event. The festival is a warm, very lighted, positive, colourful, visual, immersive event which should be reflect in the poster design.

event research

bethany fitton

As the poster outcome will be a take the form of a purely poster visual expression, visual research into other poster designs styles influences related to the theme was conducted into a range of different sources. Illustrative Poster Research As highlight the event is a very visual heavy experience therefor this aspect should be expressed via the final outcome. The poster should focus on the visual aspect and experience associated with the event as to showcase it’s uniqueness therefore highly visual illustrative poster research was explored as to see how this style could work for this brief outcome. Chinese Graphic Design As the poster represent both aspect of English culture and Chinese coming together combination this is theme aimed to be reflect by the poster outcome, due to this visual research was conducted into Chinese Poster design elements as well as English Poster Design elements. Anna Kovecses. The tone of the poster for this outcome aims for a illustrative playful outcome as to expresses the main audience of the festival which is children/families. The aim of the event was to teach and visually inform of the Chinese culture to young children and their families to make a more culturally and social aware generation. Therefore this aspect of the posters need to be repented heavily by the outcome to show the cultural and social benefits of the event, this is also will accurately portray the tone of the event to the audience. As this is aimed for research has been conducted into visually heavy playful posters, but an artist who’s style visually signifies the intended positive, abstract, cheerful aspect of the event is Anna Kovecses.

Poster Design Ideas -Chinese text This idea comes for the Chinese graphic design influences, in many of those posters they combined text as the design elements rather than just being right aline informative or readable it became a illustration aspect. This idea would create a typographical poster reflective of this research style that showed the combination of cultures via using type from both culture as the Chinese poster do. Show both cultures coming together via the combination of the both languages. This would also create a outcome that was readable for both Chinese and English audience showing the diversity of the event. -mono print poster An idea for the poster that reflects the manual style of the exhibition and the handmade aspect of the lanterns via the more expressive style of output is to create a print that is showcase the busy nature of the festival. From reviews of the event it was summarised that the event was greatly popular and very busy, therefor this idea would create a visually busy overlapped mono print poster. The poster would reflect the different lantern form at the event via the shape used to create the mono print. -glow in the dark posters This idea has created the bottom two poster that overlays type and imagery representative of the different cultures, and uses glow in the dark in, the is to reflect the light expressed via the lanterns in the festival and also the combination of cultures, this is presented on the poster via green ink layer. This also link to the time frame and imagery of the festival as these are all dark pictures with glowing lanterns. The poster for this will be manual printed, one of the benefits of this medium is the glow in the dark and florescent ink available therefore this would apply this benefits to the theme as to reflect the light at the event. Feedback for a Crit was to take the bottom right idea forward, this is due to the child like nature of the design setting a playful lighthearted fun tone expressing the event tone whilst the colour scheme reflect the light used at the event.

For this final outcome have to create a manually printed A3 poster, the selected the method for this is screen printing, this as it capture detailed and reproduced the intended details whilst also the ability to recreate glow in the dark and fluorescent inks. As the Event selected is the Magic Lantern Festival these light reflecting and specialist ink could be used to visually reflect this part of the events aesthetic. The design of the print was designed to full bleed A3 size which causes a range of issues with the printing of this outcome, as well as a few other issues, (the screen used someone had covered in glue by accident which left a unintended mark print in the print) the final print for this brief was redone. The poster displayed below is the only suitable outcome, but as this is for a target audience of professional the final quietly of the print should be improved. Due to good time management with this brief there was time for this to be done before the exhibition deadline. There was a range of issue with this print and the printing method, which were causes by personal issue, therefor these will be changed for the final design to produce a more professional quailty final outcome.

The final outcome for this brief was designed and reprinted to a better standard for the final submission, this final print is greatly improved version from the first test due to the design fixes. An issue with this outcome was that for this idea that glow in the dark ink was aimed for but this has not worked, the ink has unfortunately gone out of date therefore do not glow but to work around this fluorescent ink used instead to still visually reflect the light aspect of the event. This cannot be seen via this scan of the final outcome. As screen print is easy to reproduce a range of different print have be produced and the must accurate will be submitted as the final outcome, this give a range of poster to chose from meaning the most successful outcome can be seen by the target audeince.
