National recognition T

oday, a college graduate provides additional value to potential employers when they see evidence of both classroom work and practical experience. More and more, college students are taking their classroom experiences and applying them in real-world work or volunteer settings during their undergraduate years. Often, this concrete application of knowledge will result in recognition for these ambitious students. That recognition can set the graduate apart from other job applicants. At Bethany, many of our students enhance their classroom education with other experiences. This work is extremely beneficial for these students and graduates, and we are thrilled to talk about the recognition they receive as a result of their efforts. This issue of the Report magazine contains stories that highlight some of the Bethany students who have been honored for a variety of outsidethe-classroom accomplishments they took part in during the recently completed 2011-12 academic year. Our newest major, media arts, is garnering a fair share of national attention largely due to the work of professors Andrew Overn and Kurt Paulsen and an alliance they’ve formed with PromaxBDA. Promax is an internationally recognized association for individuals and businesses working in the entertainment marketing industry. Two Bethany students recently won national competitions sponsored by Promax. Ruth Wels, a May 2012 studio President Dan Bruss art graduate, was selected as the winner of the national Making the Cut editing competition. Current Bethany junior, Aaron Evans, won the same award earlier in the year. Several Bethany students were winners at the The Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Student Awards of Excellence. Bethany Lutheran College students claimed awards in three of the four categories in which they received nominations. The Upper Midwest Chapter of the NATAS includes universities and colleges from Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and western Wisconsin. These students are all associated with our communication program which continues to garner a good deal of attention. Program graduates continue to land jobs at top companies including ESPN, Fox Sports, and at a variety of local television stations across the upper Midwest. These are just a few of the many students who’ve been recognized for applying their expertise to projects outside of the classroom. You’ll read about others in this issue as well. While we continue to offer our students an education rooted in Christian values and Lutheran heritage, it’s experiences like these that help them to become productive members of today’s workforce.

G

race, mercy, and peace to you from God our Father and from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Have you ever known anyone who had a knack for getting into trouble? I had a friend like that in high school. His name was Joey. He just had a knack for making a mess out of things. The funny thing is that Joey was really a nice, helpful guy. He wasn’t quarrelsome, didn’t use drugs, and wasn’t especially mischievous (well, perhaps a bit). But, Joey was the kind of guy who would get stopped by the police for going too fast and the next thing you knew, Joey was outside his car with his hands on the top and his legs spread apart while he was getting frisked. We never knew exactly why it was that Dr. Doyle Holbird he had such a knack for finding trouble. St. Paul was a man who also seemed to get into a lot of trouble, imprisonments, beatings, stonings, and scourgings, but unlike Joey this trouble wasn’t brought on by himself. Rather, it was brought on by an invisible army of demonic beings who are opposed to God and all that God stands for. That means that they are opposed to God’s people, actually we might say “at war” with you and me and the Ephesians to whom Paul is writing this letter from which our lesson is taken. Paul describes the enemy forces that stand in battle array against you and me. Who exactly are they? Well, “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly realms.” Those words are from verse 12 but in verse 11 he names their leader as the devil himself. Now then, you can see that not only are we fighting against the devil but also a whole unseen army that is under his command. The catechism that I learned from said that the demons in the devil’s army are of great number and great power. Notice also that St. Paul states who our enemy is but also who the enemy is not. Our enemy is not “flesh education that lasts beyond a lifetime

and blood.” Man, it sure seems that we wrestle against flesh and blood. Just ask two roommates who aren’t speaking to each other. And what about people in Hollywood who produce movies that mock Christians and mock our Lord? Aren’t we fighting them? Well, the truth is no, they are just a deceived, unwitting pawn in the hands of our real enemy. The real enemy is numerous, the real enemy is powerful, and as I read this text it seems that it is the elite forces of Satan that are taking aim against you and me. I say this because this passage says that we battle against “the rulers of darkness.” That is a sobering statement, isn’t it? It would be flattering if it weren’t so sobering that Satan sends his elite troops to cause you and me to stumble. Did you know that they actually make plans against you? Literally, the word means methods. They devise methods to use against us. One commentator says that the greatest weapon that the demonic forces use is deceit. And you know what? When we begin to think that our battle is against another human being, the deception is already working. Doesn’t that describe you? How many times have we fallen for these tricks and begin striking out as if our friends were our enemy? Or our spouse? Or mom or dad? These people aren’t perfect, they do sin against us at times but they are not the enemy. Our enemy is spiritual. The enemy not only tries to deceive us into spending our energy upon each other, but they have a higher goal even than that. They want to tempt you and me into craving something more than we crave Jesus and His forgiveness. Their hope is that eventually we will turn completely from Jesus. Now, what are we to do? We have a formidable force arrayed against us, and we can’t even see them. Do we run? Hide? No, we are to engage the enemy. Verse 10 tells us to “be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” To do that we must “put on the full armor of God so that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” Verse 13 tells us, “Therefore, take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day and having done all to stand.” This is amazing isn’t it? Paul tells us how formidable our enemy is but then he writes as if we can actually take him on. Chapel continued on page 5 3

‘Nitzy’ was friendly Bethany neighbor By Don Moldstad Director of Campus Spiritual Life

T

here was a reason the unwrapped candy smelled like tobacco. He loved smoking White Owl cigars while children peered through the glass of his candy case. His name was Albert Nitzkowski— “Nitzy” to his customers. His tiny grocery store, in his little white house across from our campus, was a regular stop for Bethany students for nearly 40 years. Some days neighborhood children saw Nitzy as often as we saw our fathers. Sitting in his old chair, beneath caged canaries, watching TV, or listening to his Twins, Nitzy waited while you made your candy selection. Rarely did he sell any of the cans of soup or cereal in his store. An expiration date on one Wheaties box was over a year old. Candy, pop, milk, bread, and cigarettes were the usual transactions. His closest competition was the Bethany canteen. Alumni claim he was a bit lenient selling smokes to minors. Selling food was in his blood. In 1877 Al’s parents arrived in Mankato in a boxcar with six couples. Through the years they had sixteen children, eight girls and eight boys, and operated a profitable gardening and berry farm. As a young man, Nitzy opened a meat market on Front Street and later he purchased his own house/grocery store near Lincoln School. His wife, Pearl, died at age 33, leaving him widowed with two young sons. In the early 1940s he relocated his store directly across the street from our new Honsey Hall. The Nitzkowski name was well-known in Mankato. Al’s father, Fred, frequently preached in Methodist churches, having been influenced by the revivalist movement of the mid-1800s. Nitzy’s sister became a Minnesota State Representative, and a nephew played and coached for the U.S. Olympic water polo team. Alfred was also known for his own cooking. Jars of sweet and sour meatballs or spaghetti sauce would be sent home as

a gift for an aging neighbor or sick family member. Don’t let the old flannel shirt or cigar smoke fool you, he had a tender heart, especially toward his neighbors. However, one day that heart of gold was challenged. A teenager came into his store to rob him. Rumor has it Nitzy chased him away with an axe and yelled, “I know who your parents are!” For months afterward he kept his front door locked, and customers had to knock to enter. I can still remember the axe leaning by the front door. The final decade of Al’s life was spent in the Lutheran Home near Sibley Park. In 1982 he died at the age of 97. For many who made this campus their home, Nitzy was not only a little slice of Americana, but a friendly neighbor, and a memorable part of the extended Bethany family.

Faculty & Staff News Dr. Polly Browne (education) recently gave presentations to the faculties of Lakeside Lutheran High School in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, Mt. Olive Lutheran School in Mankato, and the Pacific Northwest Evangelical Lutheran Synod teachers’ conference. Dr. Ryan MacPherson (history) was interviewed for the “Issues, Etc.” radio program concerning his involvement in Perry v. Brown, the California Marriage Amendment case. Dr. MacPherson authored an amicus curiae brief favorable of the amendment, which the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals quoted and discussed in its recent ruling against that amendment. MacPherson authored two books published in March 2012. Studying Luther’s Large Catechism: A Workbook for Christian Discipleship is based on the Large Catechism Bible study that Dr. MacPherson taught for Mt. Olive Lutheran Church during the summer of 2011. The Culture of Life: Ten Essential Principles for Christian Bioethics is expanded from a presentation he gave in November 2011 for Wisconsin Lutherans for Life. Both books are available for purchase at the college bookstore

The reason is not that we have enough strength within ourselves, but rather notice that we engage the enemy with God’s power. After all, it is Jesus who defeated the devil. He did that when He took the sins of people like you and me upon himself. He took all of our sins and then went to Calvary and paid for them with his own suffering and death. Think about that for a moment, because there is not one of us who has resisted Satan like we should. Yet, because of his blood you are clean and can stand before him with a education that lasts beyond a lifetime

as well as online. Dr. MacPherson was an invited speaker for two conferences. On April 14, 2012, he delivered a paper entitled, “The History of No-Fault Divorce: An OddCouple Marriage between the Political Left and Right” for the “Adult Children of Divorce: Recovering Origins” conference sponsored by the Pontifical John Paul II Institute on Marriage and Family at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Dr. MacPherson also spoke on “Communicating a Culture of Life: The Redemptive Power of Conversion Narratives,” for the Third Annual Online Apologetics Conference of Athanatos Christian Ministries on April 19, 2012. Amanda Moeller, Ramsey Turner, and Orrin Ausen (library) attended the Midwest Library Technology Conference at Macalester College on March 14-15, 2012. Topics ranged from usability testing to cloud computing, and from privacy issues to mobile computing. The Bethany Archives Steering Committee members took a tour of the Gustavus Adolphus Library Archives on Tuesday, March 20, 2012. Members on the committee include Amanda Moeller, Erling Teigen, Ryan MacPherson, Mark Harstad, and Ronald Younge. The college, through an appointed steering committee, is establishing the college archives. With the cooperation and help

of the library staff it is beginning to collect materials. Dr. Doyle Holbird (biology) gave a talk entitled, “Our Deteriorating Genome,” to the Twin Cities Creation Science Association on March 20, 2012. The talk focused on recent studies that show the genes of each generation of children have several new mutations. This fits very well with a Biblical understanding of creation wherein humans were created perfect but since the fall have been slowly accumulating mutations. Dr. Tom Kuster (Christ in Media Institute) accepted his second Fulbright Specialist appointment. His first was to United International College in China in the spring of 2010. This time he was at Daelim University College in Anyang, Korea (just south of Seoul), to start a debate program there, the seventh time he has done this in various locations. He and Judy, who has been engaged to work with students there on accent modification, were in Korea for the month of May. Prof. William Bukowski (studio art) was the juror for an art show at the Nobles County Art Center in Worthington, Minnesota. He judged and critiqued the Worthington Area Art Show. Prof. Bukowski is currently working on a private commission of Jesus and the Little Children, which will be displayed at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church (WELS), in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

clear conscience. I remember back to the first Iraq war when we invaded Kuwait and the Army had expected stiff resistance but really met very little resistance and many of the Iraqi soldiers would just come walking up in droves to lay down their weapons. The photographers showed pictures of the piles of guns, grenades, and rocket launchers that were surrendered willingly by the malnourished Iraqi soldiers. Can you imagine a Christian doing that with his spiritual weaponry? It seems unimaginable yet it is exactly what happens whenever I neglect God’s Word. It’s not

only foolish, it’s dangerous because Satan doesn’t wait until we are ready for his attack. I know I’m going to be redundant here and repeat what has been said every day in chapel this week. But, to be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might means that I’m going to have to study his Word. It means that I must take the Lord’s Supper. That is where his power is, that is where he shares it with us. So let’s make sure that we are hearing and reading his Word. Make sure that we regularly take his supper and then, let’s go engage the enemy. Amen.

The Christ in Media Institute, empowered by the Great Commission of our Lord Jesus Christ, promotes research and education focused on employing God’s gift of mass media to bring the pure Gospel message to vast audiences both in the United States and abroad. It does not engage in media production, but rather aims to develop and gather the expertise required for the effective production and distribution of Christian media in a variety of cultures. The project embraces the theology of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod and is supported

by a grant from the Antioch Foundation. The Conference aims to advance the effective use of technology for Gospel outreach in world missions. It will bring together individuals with a variety of experience and expertise in a dynamic atmosphere of creative problem solving and innovation, in the expectation that current efforts will be encouraged and extended, and new directions planned.

Expected attendees include: • World missionaries of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS) and the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), representing a variety of cultural, social, and technological conditions on various continents around the world • Leaders and members of the mission boards of the ELS and the WELS • Leaders and members of mission societies that function within our fellowship

• Media professionals of our fellowship, who have experience in production and distribution via a variety of media • Students and faculty from seminaries, colleges, and high schools of our fellowship; many students will present research projects applying their disciplines to mission work • Interested congregation members, pastors, and the general public

Issues and challenges to be explored: A conference session will be devoted to exploring each of these seven challenges. Discussion will be prompted by brief observations, written by Conference leaders and available for reading online in advance of the Conference. • Cultural: While the Gospel message is universal, its presentation might be tailored to peculiar features of the culture in which it is preached. What kinds of cultural elements should be taken into account, and how can this be done without distorting or weakening the Scriptural message? • Technological: What media are (or will be) available in various mission situations that can be used to reach large audiences with the Gospel message? What means of message distribution are available? • Creative: How can messages be crafted that will deliver the Gospel via technology to large audiences in a way that will draw attention, and will be of the high quality worthy of the task? What form can media messages take, and who will create them?

• Legal / Political: What legal and political barriers must be addressed in each nation in order to deliver Gospel messages to large audiences via media? How should risks to life and livelihood be addressed? • Teaching: Since ideally the media messages for a particular culture should be produced by people within that culture, how can local expertise be developed, supported, and encouraged? What partnerships can support these efforts? • Stewardship: management and funding: Since media production and distribution are expensive, how can financial support be obtained, and how can production and distribution be managed in an efficient and business-like manner?

A final conference session will consider “action items,” recommendations to appropriate agencies for carrying out proposals that emerge from the discussions. The Conference will close Sunday morning with an international worship service in Bethany’s Trinity Chapel.
