Between Facebook, Linkedin, Google+, Twitter, and the in person networking groups/events that you participate in, chances are you are connected with hundreds if not, thousands of people, but how well do you really know them? Most of us spend a lot of time, energy and money networking but how much time to you devote to truly getting to know your connections? Do you know details about their businesses? Do you know what their needs are? Do you know who their ideal referral is? Have you visited their websites? Have you had any one-on-one time with them? If you call them will they even know who you are? The more you know about your connections, the better source of information and referrals you can be to them. The more you help others, the more they will want to help you. Ask yourself, do you really know who you know? If not, take a little time and learn about your connections. This is the key to building a strong, solid network that you can count on.

Some Networking Do’s and Don’ts So, you’ve recently started a business, joined a sales team, or signed up with a MLM company. Good for you. Now how to promote that business? Managers and up-lines will tell you to network, network, and network! Networking is great, and over the years I’ve picked up some great tips, as well as seen some other not so great things I’d like to share with you. First off, the Don’ts: 1) Be on your cell phone the whole time: Ok, honestly, I know, texting and checking Facebook on your smart phone is addicting. It’s also rude. Turn it off when you walk in. Or, leave it in your car if you can not be trusted. 2) Disrespect the time limit given for your infomercial. As much as you think people care about the name of your first hamster and your favorite color and what you were doing back in 1987…no one does. I promise. 3) Don’t pester a prospect to death. A “no” isn’t a “no” forever; it might just be a no for right now. But keep on messing with them, for that “7 points of contact” rule that some managers like to insist upon, and I can promise you, it will be a no forever, or they will just avoid you entirely. Now for the Do’s: 1) Do be interested in who you are talking to: That means coming up with interesting questions instead of just smiling and nodding when they tell you their name and company. Try “Who would you need to meet in this room that could really help take your business to the next level, and why?” 2) Move around! Make it a point to talk to as many people as possible. Sit at new tables when the meeting begins. Don’t know anyone? Get to the event early. Stand at the entrance. People will have to talk to you that way. 3) Have good business cards: Ok, before I get a big “duh”, hear me out. I used to sell these things when I worked at a print company, and it amazes me how many are so lame. Get a good logo/designer. Make sure the stock is thick. And this is important: 1 side can be glossy; the other needs to be matte, so you can write on it. After all, you will have left your cell phone in your car Texty McTexterson, and you will want to write down some quick notes about your prospects and vice versa.
Happy Networking!

ecently I got into a discussion with a friend about podcasts. A few years ago podcasts were all the rage and everyone was jumping on board. There are podcasts I would subscribe to and after just a few weeks the authors would lose interest and the feeds would stop updating. Today most of that has run its course and weeded out the ones who are less serious. Podcasts today can be very entertaining, but also very educational. I’d like to take a minute to share with you some podcast tips on how to improve your business. Podcasts can be a very good way of keeping up with new business tools, technology, and ideas during the day, on your commute, or while you are exercising.
TWEET UPS
Just about any MP3 player, smart phone, tablet, or computer will play a podcast. I have an iPod I use just because my Bionic battery struggles enough getting through the day. I also use iTunes to update my podcasts although there are many ways of subscribing to updates and putting them on your device. You can search and find one that meets your needs easily.
Some of my favorite podcasts that I would recommend are from a variety of sources. I listen to a lot of tech heavy podcasts. Leo Laporte is considered by many to be the definitive source for tech podcasts. He has built an entire brand around this This Week in Tech podcast. He now has that one as well as This Week in Google (which also talks a lot about cloud technologies). These are two of my favorites. Leo and his guests are entertaining and informative and all of his catalogue of podcasts is very professionally done. The Wall Street Journal also has an excellent catalogue of podcasts. My favorites from them are Wall Street Journal This Morning, Wall Street Journal on Small Business, and Wall Street Journal’s Your Money Matters.
The Harvard Business Review also has the HBR Idea Cast with the tagline “Bringing you the analysis and advice of the leading minds in management”. The HBR is one of the biggest names in small business and entrepreneurship and I highly recommend this weekly podcast. It covers everything from work-life balance to motivation.

T S One more that I recommend is The Smallbiz Brain. This podcast is hosted by David Wolf and includes experts and leaders in the world of small business. This podcast is also a weekly podcast. There are many ways of finding new podcasts and I hope if you aren’t familiar with podcasting you will give a few of these a listen. Who knows you might hear a solution to problem or a get an idea for a great startup. If you find any not mentioned here, let me know, I’m always searching for new podcasts to check out. http://www.bobnew.com

THOUGHTS
before coffee
Robert Christiansen
Watching a variety of birds congregating at our new raised birdfeeders, I thought, “How easy to attract so many beautiful creatures. Create a space where they all feel comfortable and safe, fill with great stuff they can all enjoy, then sit back and watch them show up!” This is what Chocolate Blues and Business Networking Festivals are all about. Creating networking events that bring a diverse group of decision makers, business owners and community leaders together – people who solve problems, work hard, and enjoy a good time – to build productive new connections and new relationships on common ground. “All successful people men and women are big dreamers. They imagine what their future could be, ideal in every respect, and then they work every day toward their distant vision, that goal or purpose.” -Brian Tracy Dreamers seek dreamers. Leaders seek leaders. This is the way of the world. Networking occurs naturally to people in all walks of life. We’re hardwired to meet up with and work with others. It’s because humans are social creatures whose greatest strength in our ability to cooperate and leverage our collective strengths to make things happen. Don’t think so? Try this. Search online for ‘Networking’ and you’ll find over 965,000,000 listings. That’s pretty convincing not to mention incredible! “The bigger your rolodex, the bigger your business.” -Anonymous Some believe collecting a lot of business cards is networking and making a lot of connections this way is okay. It’s a beginning. Next level networking is generating relationships from those connections and is better. You’re getting the idea. Top level networking involves moving conversations and relationships forward, on a regular basis with people in position to make decisions and make things happen and is the
best! Being a good networker is a lot like being a good gardener. You choose what you want to grow (type of connections), prepare the garden space (meetings and events), plant your seeds (ideas and possibilities), then tend to your garden as the plants grow to maturity and bear fruit (referrals, introduction and opportunities) for you in abundance! “If you want to go somewhere, it is best to find someone who has already been there.” -Robert Kiyosaki Every successful person leaves clues and paths that you can leverage to achieve your dreams and goals. If you’re unable to figure how to achieve your vision out on your own, it’s a good idea to just admit it, find those who are where you want to be, take some coaching and follow in their footsteps. Basic networking is a means to meet the people who can possibly help you reach your dreams. Creating a community event that provides possibilities for your target audience is the means to meet the people who will definitely help you achieve your goals! “No one lives long enough to learn everything they need to learn starting from scratch. To be successful, we absolutely, positively have to find people who have already paid the price to learn the things that we need to learn to achieve our goals.” -Brian Tracy Imagine choosing to drive from New York to California without a map or GPS. It’s possible you’ll eventually get there, but not without a lot of time used, money spent and many mistakes made along the way. It’s also possible you may actually never get there. Something occurs along the journey that stops you, and wherever ‘there’ is, you remain. Networking provides you with allies, supporters and mentors who have mutual benefit for your success. They’ll help you create a business plan (road map), coach you (give directions), and provide an

Network Gardener accountability structure (kick your butt) to keep you on track! “Position yourself as a center of influence, the one who knows the movers and shakers. People will respond to that, and you’ll soon become what you project.” -Bob Burg The easiest way to find ‘Centers of Influence’ those with broad reaching relationships - is to become one. Join a cause. Create a networking event or volunteer to help conduct networking events. Volunteer for ‘BIG’ events involving the types of people and businesses you’re interested in. Volunteering for an event your future mentor is passionate about is brilliant! You’ll demonstrate a ‘whatever it takes’ attitude to be of service and get time with them too! Enroll others to help you help others and you’re on your way to becoming the leader you dream of being!
It’s not what you know but who you know that makes the difference.-Anonymous Networking Tip: Professionals become known as masters by staying within one industry. Successful networkers become known as networking ‘masters’ by involving themselves across many industries. This is the way you become aware of opportunities that you can share with your many connections, helping everyone including yourself ‘win’! “The successful networkers I know, the ones receiving tons of referrals and feeling truly happy about themselves, continually put the other person’s needs ahead of their own.” -Bob Burg
For extra credit, after choosing who you want to network with, do some research, find out about their business interests and passions, then search out a couple of opportunities as referrals of people you can introduce them to. You may ask, “But why? They are already so successful. What good does this do for me?” Are you being a good gardener? Let me ask you; do you like getting referrals? Yes. Being introduced to people? Yes. Spoken well of? Yes. Guess what? EVERYBODY DOES! By acknowledging and uplifting others and being a connector of people to possibilities, you’ll raise yourself in the opinion of everyone as you raise them also. “Networking is an essential part of building wealth.” -Armstrong Williams Being of service to others will generate referrals, introductions and connections the like of which you can never do with conventional advertising. Don’t get me wrong, advertising plays an important part in business. However, the Return on Investment of intelligent networking is incalculable! Wherever you go, think “How can I help you?” rather than “How can you help me?” and plant today for the results you’ll harvest tomorrow! “The way of the world is meeting people through other people.” -Robert Kerriga

Michelle Ketterman 11 Goof Proof Rules to Successful Social Networking Some days, it seems like new Social Media Gurus, Experts, Specialists, Mavens, etc. pop up everyday! It can be overwhelming trying to keep up with the seemingly endless social media advice. I have taken classes, webinars, and seminars and have found a system that really works for me. Remember that there are no one size fits all social media rules, but hopefully a few of my tips will help you create your own Goof Proof social media rules. 1.
Only play on social media sites that you have the time to participate regularly. It’s too easy
to get sucked into this week’s newest fad and before you know it, an entire day is gone. 2.
Be sincere always! In my profession, there many fake testimonials, awards, and identities.
Guess what? No matter how slick they are, eventually their ruse is discovered and they are discredited. The risk just is not worth it – be yourself and enjoy productive and long term on-line presence. 3.
Remember the meaning of the word ‘Friend.’ It is YOUR wall and NEVER be afraid to
unfriend or block someone for bad behavior! 4.
Be consistent with your on-line handle so people can find you easier on every social medial
platform. 5.
Have a profile picture of you. Never use the generic profile clip art, instead use a photo with
a friendly and welcoming expression. 6.
There is no such thing as a private page. Seriously, just get over that idea right now. If you
put it on a social media site, anyone and yes I mean ANYONE can gain access to your page fairly quickly. 7.
If you are a business owner, do not post religious, political, inflammatory posts. This is abso-
lutely an iron clad rule that I never break…some people are not as rigid about this as I am (Once again, you are encouraged to create your own goof proof list!) 8.
Do not post about alcohol or excessive partying. Many times I have seen business owners
post several times every week about how drunk they are. Seriously, unless you needed a new bartender, would you hire a professional who bragged about habitual intoxication? Probably not. 9.
Stop talking about your clients or customers – I have seen pages where a business owner com-
plains about their clients. If you aren’t sure why this is potentially professional suicide, see item 6. 10. Protect your network and hide your friends list. 11. Never send a friend request to someone just because they are connected to a connection – that is not networking or an introduction…it’s tasteless spamming.

NET WORKING IN TODAYS WORLD By Definition NETWORKING is noun: 1. the exchange of information or services among individuals, groups, or institutions; specifically: the cultivation of productive relationships for employment or business. 2. The establishment or use of a computer network. (Source: MerriamWebster Dictionary) What do you use networking for? Do you network so you can find clients? Do you network so you can find friends? Do you leverage your existing contacts to meet new people? Do you like meeting new people? We all have our own personal reason for how and where we network. There are so many ways to network both In-Person and On-line. Let’s explore some networking options available to us. In-Person networking can be accomplished via a variety of avenues, such as Local City Chambers, Small Business Chambers, BNI Groups, BRN Groups, Neighborhood Associations, Home Builders Associations, the BBB, Business Clubs, Groups and Organization. Some are fee based and others are free. Explore all options in your area and decide what groups work best for you and your business needs. On-line Networking has a greater number of choices including Social Media options like Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, Pintrest, and a host of other choices. All of these are free and some have can fee based upgrade options. Now, that you have places to connect what’s next? First, look at each networking opportunity with the understanding that not everyone attending these events or on-line social media sites have the same personalities. Be sure to accept each for who they are by embracing people around you who are honest and welcoming, also learn to accept people who are more reserved and to themselves. There is an opportunity to learn and grow from each other. Next, determine if you are looking to build a Local or Global Network or both. For some your most valuable connections will be your local sphere of influence and for others your global connections may be the ones that take your business to a whole new level.
BE THE BOSS MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2012
When building a more locally based network one-on-one time is essential and getting to know these individuals will take time and effort and is always a great way to enjoy a cup of coffee or lunch with great conversation. When you meet look for ways you can offer them value or a benefit and think along the line of “What can you give?” Be genuine in your interest of the individual and their business and most often they will return the favor. In many cases it’s not your connection that will be you’re future clients it’s your connections, connections. While building a local network in addition to one-on-one, look for ways to bring multiple people together and view yourself as the builder in your community by bringing people together. Building a Global Network can take on a life of its own and can take up a lot of your time but just as with local networking the more you put into your global network the more
What do you use net wor k ing for? D o you net wor k so you can find clients? D o you net wor k so you can find fr iends? D o you leverage your existing contac ts to meet new people?
you will get from it. Let’s take Linkedin and Facebook as an example they have totally changed how we connect with people. Your biggest connection could be a ex-classmate that you haven’t seen in years but finds you through a “LIKE” on your High School page on Facebook, has a need that you can fill, gives you a call and is now one of your best clients. Linkedin is a great way to pursue new connections by pealing away the top layer and getting inside your connections and who they are connected to is a great opportunity. Be as genuine in your online approach as you are with your local connections. Lastly, once you’ve made the connections, had the one-on-one or on-line meeting be sure and follow-up with a simple Thank You for their time, referral etc., be a source of information for your connections, and keep in touch as you never know where you’ll find your next best connection. LEGALSHIELD Hello! My name is Craig Thomas. I had always looked for an opportunity to make money and work from home. I had tried some of everything just to make some extra money, phone services, weight loss, helping people get their unclaimed tax money, if It could help me make extra money, I tried it. But I couldn’t find anything that I could put my heart into until I was exposed 3 times to a 40 year old company called LegalShield (formerly Pre-paid Legal Services,Inc) LegalShield provides access to law firms for less than $20 a month! We also have the best identity theft plan on the market, we help protect and grow small businesses with our small business plan, and we also offer our legal plan to companies as an employee benefit. When I was exposed to the LegalShield membership, I was not in need of an attorney at the time but I understood the need to have access to one, or in this case, access to a law firm! In my mind, I thought it was better to have this membership and not need it, than to need it and not have it! Well the next month I needed it and I’ve used it quite a bit ever since. I’ve used my membership to get my sons drivers license reinstated, to get a roofing company, that reneged on repairs from the damage they caused, to come back out to repair it, my wife and I have had our wills done, and just last year, my wife had to call the law firm to ask about Healthcare power of attorney for her father. The membership is life saving and its saving 1.4 million families in the U.S. and Canada. We are currently going through a re-branding because last year a New York investment firm, MidOcean Partners, invested over $650 million in our company because they saw what they called, “Network marketing’s best kept secret”! One of their goals is to take us from 1.4 million LegalShield memberships to, within the next 5 years, 7 million memberships! Sounds like opportunity to me! When the gentleman came to my home and presented the LegalShield membership to me, I knew it made sense but he told me there was also an opportunity behind it. He showed me the compensation plan and I was extremely excited! I had finally found
BE THE BOSS MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2012
the opportunity that I was looking for! To be able help people with their everyday legal problems and getting paid to do it. My second week in LegalShield I made an extra $400! Not big money but to any average American today, an extra $400 a month could mean keeping your home out of foreclosure or using it to upgrade the car you drive. Our business is set up so that you don’t have to recruit to make money, we have lots of associates that make 6-figure incomes just selling our membership as an employee benefit to companies but I chose to recruit to leverage my time. J. Paul Getty once said he would rather have 1% of 100 people efforts than to have 100% of his own. My wife and I started recruiting and we have associates on our team across the country. My goal is to retire my wife or to at least give her the option to work if she wants, me personally, I never want to work for anyone AGAIN! I know that LegalShield is the vehicle that will help me to accomplish my goals. LegalShield, over the past decade has paid over $1 Billion to its associates, 1000+ are earning over $50,000 a year, and many are earning between $100,000 and $1million+ per year! LegalShield has a unique service and a unique opportunity. Where else can you get legal services from the best Law firms in every state for less than $20 a month? Nowhere but LegalShield! You can’t go get our services from a retail store or even on ebay! You can only get it from LegalShield associates, incredible! If you are looking for an opportunity where you can really change your family tree and create generational wealth, LegalShield could be what you are looking for.
