In addition to being one of the few ‘bosses’ in this industry, Laura can also tout a very low turnover rate, and a company described as an elite group of plumbers, known to be the best in the business that handle the problems other plumbers can’t. Laura credits her pay and benefits, the company’s high standards, staying engaged with the newest technologies in her industry, and the belief that you hire for character and teach the skill.
BE THE BOSS Growing up female in a male dominated world, I learned very quickly and constantly that being a member of this gender was a steep uphill climb. Starting with the non-inclusive prayer language of Catholic Mass and Catechism and traipsing after my brothers to witness their football and baseball feats when I was a young girl. Being one of a handful of female Chemistry students in college, told I needed to take ugly pills and gain 60 pounds in order to be successful in my first professional position. Where’s the surprise? It’s no wonder women are leading the way in minority business ownership, with nearly 1 out of every 3 small businesses being owned by women according to the 2007 U.S. Census.
Laura was honored as the 2011 Avatar of the Year by the Indianapolis Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO). NAWBO is the premiere organization for women entrepreneurs in the U.S. and they’re growing. The Indianapolis chapter is the third largest chapter in the organization. More and more women are claiming the role of ‘boss’ rather than hitting the glass ceilings of corporate America.
Amanda Parker, another NAWBO member, admitted that she too left the so called security of a regular paycheck after being told that she wasn’t anatomically correct to enter upper management by a previous employer. Four years later, she’s the successful owner of Collective Alternative, a full-service marketing firm, with a steady 40% growth over the last three years. Flexibility, creativity and personal development are the most important job attributes that Parker offers as a new boss, which comes with their challenges as well with a partially virtual team. “We constantly balance the need for work day flexibility with client deadlines. DEMONS AND DREAMS

the one that paralyzes more people from claiming the success they are capable of is the demon Fear of Failure. What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? Would you ever accept mediocrity or status quo? Would you ever speak the words, “I can’t?” Whether the Fear demons in your life are destroying your dreams, or merely limiting your happiness and success, empower yourself with this one simple truth: Everything you want is on the other side of Fear.
m a g a z i n e
Paranormal novels are books with vampires, witches, fairies (faeries), werewolves, shapeshifters, and, of course, demons. In a paranormal novel, demons come in many shapes, sizes and power levels. There are Shade demons, not very powerful, but they travel in swarms. Groth demons, those have healing powers; they torture their victims, then heal them so they can torture them again (sound like anyone you know?). And the most powerful in the demon ilk, the Ancient demons; they have lived for centuries causing pain, suffering and death. Maybe it’s a huge creative leap, but I see a strong correlation between the demons above and the demons that haunt our everyday human lives, limiting our success and destroying our dreams. However we define success, there are countless demons that secretly seep into our beings polluting our minds with uncertainty and doubt. They have different names than the ones in paranormal fiction. Our demons go by the names of Self-doubt, Pride, Procrastination, Shame, Unworthiness, Negativity, Scarcity Mentality, Status Quo, Pessimism, Mediocrity, and on and on. Sometimes these demons kill our dreams in one shot like a swarm of Shade demons. Sometimes they slowly torture us over and over like Groth demons, tormenting us with memories of past failures. As much as these lesser demons can hinder our ambition and weaken our commitment, none of these demons can incapacitate us like the Ancient demon named Fear. Like Ancient demons in fiction, ‘Fear’ has been around since the beginning of time. It speaks to us in many forms: Fear of rejection, Fear of loss, Fear of commitment, Fear of poverty, Fear of humiliation, but

I don’t know about you, but I love when the season’s change and the new styles are seen in magazines and on the runway. COURAGEOUS CREATIVITY AMY BARNES FROM FINANCIAL MANAGER TO BLUE EYES AND BARE FEET DESIGNER Taking a leap of faith from investments to fashion design for Stephanie Williams was a wonderful transformative experience. With faith in herself, work she loves and a happy marriage and home life, Stephanie models a life of Courageous Creativity. Courageous Creativity is having the courage to fully be yourself, to create what you most want in your life, to make a difference in the world and to have amazing relationships.
b e
As a young twenty-something successful financial planner, Stephanie appeared to have it all. Yet she felt stressed and not fulfilled, just very, very busy. In 2008, pregnant with her third child, Stephanie felt a growing creative itch to sew and discovered she loved making clothes for her children. Stephanie, who had enjoyed sewing with her Mother as a child, has always loved fashion and design. Her Mom made decorative wreaths from herbs and wildflowers and hand painted furniture in the “shabby chic” style. At first Stephanie doubted her own creative gift and felt she should stay in the world of finance.
t h e b o s s m a g a z i n e
Demand for Stephanie’s creations grew. Choosing between her growing financial practice and her growing, creatively fulfilling, yet less financially rewarding, fashion design business was hard. “It was a tough decision to leave financial planning and it scared the crap out of me, but I believed and trusted that this was the right thing to do.”
b e t h e b o s s m a g . c o m
Taking another leap of faith in 2011, Stephanie and her husband moved into an old family home in Williams, Indiana. “Before I felt we were always going against the grain, there were always obstacles. Now I’m less stressed. I know it will work out. I don’t worry how fast the business will grow. I don’t care to stress. It’s such a relief. As a financial manager, life always seemed like a competition, to sell more, to do more. My marriage is better. I believe in us. We have more family time and are more relaxed. There are some days when I doubt myself. I have insecurities. My husband is always there for me. This has turned out to be a huge blessing.” Stephanie offers words of wisdom to anyone who wants to start their own business, “Make your means - your lifestyle - fit your passion. So often we use money as a barrier for not allowing ourselves to do what we most want. Scale down you living expenses so you can do what you most love. Don’t let money, expenses and a big mortgage get in the way of following your dreams.” I asked Stephanie where she got the courage to be herself and do what she loves. “I think I got a lot of guts from my Mom. Now that I’m creating I feel much closer to my Mom. I want to call her, ask her advice. Which needle should I use or how to do that stitch? Mom would know. I trust that I was given a gift for fabrics and design. What you do may not make sense to other people, you need to believe and trust in yourself, trust your intuition and trust in God.” Stephanie’s Mother died in 2004. I think Stephanie’s Mother would be very proud of her. Every day Stephanie is able to do what she loves. “Design is a thrill. It’s a constant process such a cool feeling to look and say I did that. You’ve got to follow your heart. Every day is a new opportunity. I get to do what I love.”
Stephanie’s fashions may be seen at www.blueeyesandbarefeet.com. She launches her spring collection during Midwest Fashion Week at Bella Vita on March 11. 9

HOW TO CONNECT WITH INFLUENCERS cATHERINE MORGAN Do you want to connect with the experts and influencers in your niche? People often judge you by the company you keep. Why not connect with the best and the brightest in your specialty? The “gatekeepers” are gone and you can build relationships with influencers such as bestselling authors, highly paid speakers, or other famous people. How do you approach these professionals to build rapport and potentially gain visibility (and maybe referrals!) for your business? I met New York Times bestselling authors Carol Roth and Michael Port (and many others) on Twitter and Facebook. I also have met many alliance partners. And I met Shelly Rice and many of the other Be The Boss contributors on social media.
Here’s how I suggest you start: 1. Make a list of people you would like to meet. I think Michael Port’s “List of 20” is the right number. Note: Don’t just pick Oprah or Tony Robbins. Remember that people who are just a little further ahead in their businesses can be influencers for you. 2. Start following influencers on whatever social media platforms they hang out on, and also start reading their blogs. 3. Comment on their blogs, re-tweet or like their content, and answer their questions. 4. Lather, rinse, repeat. Over time, they may respond to you or engage with you. 5. Interact with their communities. Chances are if you like their work, you will like the other people who like their work. Interacting with an influencer’s community can help you build your network! You need to be seen as an expert in your space. And prospects need to know about your services. Interacting with the leaders in your niche will grow your skills, and can help you build your business. This strategy can work for you whether you are experienced or just getting started. I am currently speaking on this topic and I would love to speak for your group.

Before you get started, please remember to go into this with a collaborative mindset. If you aren’t looking to create a winwin for all involved, it probably won’t work for you. Also, remember that all relationships, including online relationships, take time. As Elizabeth Marshall says, “Rapport before request.” Don’t ask for something the first time you connect with someone. It’s just bad manners. You should always date before you jump into a relationship.

NO ONE WILL PROMOTE YOU BETTER THEN YOU WILL DALE LITTLE Q. I know that marketing is a crucial part of building my business, but I feel so awkward in networking situations. How can I overcome this? A. When we’re passionate about something, we share it with others. Why should marketing your business be any different? Sure, we all suffer from insecurity from time to time, but when you’re in business for yourself, there’s simply no room for insecurity! These are my secrets for overcoming insecurity and being the best spokesperson possible for your company:
b e
1. Study! Learn everything that you possibly can about your industry and common business practices. Visit the library and bookstores. Subscribe to industry publications, both hard copy and electronic. Invest time in webinars and tele-classes that teach the latest trends and techniques. The more you know, the easier it will be for you to discuss both the broad scope of your industry and the specifics of your company.
You started your business so you could do the work you love. Your enthusiasm for what you do enables you to promote your company with intensity and joy. Incorporate my 5 easy steps into your daily routine and watch your marketing prowess soar!
13
b e t h e b o s s m a g . c o m
5. Rest & Renew! The affects of stress and fatigue creep up on us without our realization. Think about it. When you’re tired, most every task seems insurmountable. Such is the case when stress and fatigue affect your selfconfidence and your marketing capabilities. Regardless of the length of your To Do List or your pending schedule commitments, take time each day to step away from your business. Allow your body and your mind to rest… to renew.
m a g a z i n e
4. Follow up! Clear and prompt communication is so important in the marketing of your business. Following the event, send your new connections a note or give them a call. Demonstrate the importance of your budding relationship by referencing something they mentioned in your initial conversation. Arrange an opportunity to learn more about them and their needs.
b o s s
3. Own the room! A deep breath for composure and a predetermined task will ease you through the initial anxieties of entering into a networking situation. Then, as the Nike ad said “Just Do IT!” Seek out a lone individual, introduce yourself and assume the persona of an event host. Ask questions about your new connection, their business, how they heard about the event, etc.
t h e
2. Create! Nothing stimulates positive energy flow like creativity. This creativity may revolve around a new product omarketing strategy, or perhaps it’s totally unrelated to your professional life. Indulge yourself in creative acts – writing, painting, gardening, etc. As creativity increases your positive energy, your self-confidence will increase exponentially.

As a mom/parent we are always wearing many hats and constantly juggling work obligations and family commitments. To create a balance and happy life it very important for you and every one around you to have clear goals and setting priorities is a must. We will all do this differently as we choose what is right for us and our situation. It is important to write down your schedule to avoid conflicts that may arise. As we are all entrepreneurs in our own right, creating this beautiful community of BE the BOSS, I am not about to start telling you how to do this, as my values may vary from yours. Instead I would like to share this brilliant work of Dr. Stephen Covey. Enjoy! The Big Rocks of Life Dr. Stephen R. Covey, First Things First One day this expert was speaking to a group of business students and, to drive home a point, used an illustration I’m sure those students will never forget. After I share it with you, you’ll never forget it either. As this man stood in front of the group of high-powered over-achievers he said, “Okay, time for a quiz.” Then he pulled out a one-gallon, wide-mouthed mason jar and set it on a table in front of him. Then he produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks and carefully placed them, one at a time, into the jar. When the jar was filled to the top and no more rocks would fit inside, he asked, “Is this jar full?” Everyone in the class said, “Yes.” Then he said, “Really?” He reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel. Then he dumped some gravel in and shook the jar causing pieces of gravel to work themselves down into the spaces between the big rocks. Then he smiled and asked the group once more, “Is the jar full?” By this time the class was onto him. “Probably not,” one of them answered. “Good!” he replied. And he reached under the table and brought out a bucket of sand. He started dumping the sand in and it went into all the spaces left between the rocks and the gravel. Once more he asked the question, “Is this jar full?” “No!” the class shouted. Once again he said, “Good!” Then he grabbed a pitcher of water and began to pour it in until the jar was filled to the brim. Then he looked up at the class and asked, “What is the point of this illustration?” One eager beaver raised his hand and said, “The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard, you can always fit some more things into it!” “No,” the speaker replied, “that’s not the point. The truth this illustration teaches us is: If you don’t put the big rocks in first, you’ll never get them in at all.” What are the big rocks in your life? A project that you want to accomplish? Time with your loved ones? Your faith, your education, your finances? A cause? Teaching or mentoring others? Remember to put these Big Rocks in first or you’ll never get them in at all.

THOUGHTS BEFORE COFFEE
ROBERT CHRISTIANSEN, JR.
Thoughts Before Coffee Say ‘ELO’ to Social Media
Robert Christiansen Jr. Chocolate Blues™ Long Island Area Director February 29, 2012
“Everybody all around the world, gotta tell you what I just heard There’s gonna be a party all over the world! I got a message on the radio, but where it came from I don’t really know And I heard these voices calling all over the world!” All Over The World, ELO
What ‘Social Media’ really is all about are relationships. Specifically in the sharing of ideas, events, and excitement a multitude of lives have to offer. It’s a sociological medium involving all the music, business, writings, philosophy, art, engineering, technology, communications, and so on. Most of all – it the sharing of experiences that people have most to offer! “Social networks aren’t about Web sites. They’re about experiences.” – Mike DiLorenzo, NHL social media marketing director
There’s pretty much nothing on the planet that doesn’t involve people and the relationships forged between them. By the way; You can have the fanciest technology, the most beautifully designed buildings, and products that knock the socks off your competition – in the final analysis, it’s about people being of service to people. What Social Media’s done is exponentially increase people’s ability to meet and learn about one another, more importantly, it’s increased people’s ability to get things done collectively at a phenomenal rate, yet only if there’s authenticity. Inauthentic causes are uncovered at lightening speeds by the sheer masses of people online. Best to be real, or be gone!

Social Media… There’s hardly an article, blog, video, or online chat these days that doesn’t involve social media. More social media ‘specialists’, ‘marketers’ and ‘agencies’ appear daily, touting the benefits of creating the perfect social media program. Even the traditional media outlets have jumped on the social media bandwagon adding to the hype. So naturally, while toiling away at seventeen-or-so ideas for this article, my guardian angel said ‘Enough!” and inspired me to remember exactly what ‘social media’ is - and also what it isn’t all about - by way of the 1976 Electric Lights Orchestra hit ‘All Over The World’. (Apparently, my guardian angel loves disco)…
“You will make mistakes. If you are sincere about helping the community, the authenticity will show and your mistakes will be forgiven.” – Zia Yusuf, executive vice president for SAP’s global ecosystem and partner group
For both conventional and online business owners, Social Media is a pathway to marketing and promoting goods and services. Done poorly, with nothing but the intent to push sales online, their websites and requests to connect go ignored. The expensive campaigns fussed and tweaked in every detail until perfect – are wasted. Done well, the values of the company, or person, get communicated clearly, simply, honestly and resonate strongly with their audiences. This is ‘branding’ at it’s best. When the message of what you are about is not only understood intellectually, but, accepted emotionally, as ‘good for me’ by their audience, then social media is spot on! ‘Ultimately, brands need to have a role in society. The best way to have a role in society is to understand how people are talking about things in real time.” – Jean-Philippe Maheu, chief digital officer at Ogilvy
Some industries, fearing the misuse of social media resources like facebook, twitter and the like, have instituted restrictions coupled with heavy penalties for company representatives who promote their services online. The financial industry, which I am a licensed card-carrying member of, has gone to the 16
extreme level requiring all representatives to submit what they will post online for approval before doing so, then monitoring their posts for compliance. “New marketing is about the relationships, not the medium.” – Ben Grossman, founder of BiGMarK
From a product-centric perspective, this makes sense. Don’t talk about something and no one can dispute it. Yet, the entire industry is now forced to abstain from a resource which it desperately needs more than any financial product needed by a client. The industry needs to embrace the creation, development and accountability of relationships with those in need of growth and security for their finances. How is a financial services organization and its representatives to get that message across without showing charts and graphs? “If your social strategy relies on advertising in social media, it’s probably better to hang on to your money.” –Taddy Hall, chief operating officer of Meteor Solutions

Alexander Pope once wrote, “To err is human; to forgive, divine.” In the social media world, making mistakes won’t end you. In fact, by paying close attention to the negative commentaries made toward your business, and responding with the goal of maintaining a strong human connection, you’ll enhance your status with your entire audience, and probably learn a thing or two about your ‘business’ that you weren’t fully aware of. The greatest benefit of social media is the opportunities you have to learn how your business is perceived, and how you can change that perception for the benefit of everyone involved!

“Engaging in an authentic, meaningful conversation with consumers will be the key to marketing success and growth, even if that means acknowledging negative feedback; transparency is paramount.” – Ron Blake, president and CEO of Rewards Network
b e
Well, big expensive marketing campaigns won’t cut it in social media. Save your budget. Show that you care, that’s the ticket! Involve your audience in your world by sharing the values that you practice. Nobody gives two shakes of a rats tail ‘how you do anything. Their interest is captured with ‘why’ you are doing something. To that end, catering to the high goal of prosperity via the low emotion of greed is not worthy of anyone’s time. It’s thin. Very thin. Think transparent and without substance. Like light reflected off a mirror through smoke. Instead, demonstrate what you stand for with proof of continuous attention to your audience’s best interests!

11 Goof Proof Rules to Successful Social Networking Some days, it seems like new Social Media Gurus, Experts, Specialists, Mavens, etc. pop up everyday! It can be overwhelming trying to keep up with the seemingly endless social media advice. I have taken classes, webinars, and seminars and have found a system that really works for me. Remember that there are no one size fits all social media rules, but hopefully a few of my tips will help you create your own Goof Proof social media rules. 1. Only play on social media sites that you have the time to participate regularly. It’s too easy to get sucked into this week’s newest fad and before you know it, an entire day is gone. b e
2. Be sincere always! In my profession, there many fake testimonials, awards, and identities. Guess what? No matter how slick they are, eventually their ruse is discovered and they are discredited. The risk just is not worth it – be yourself and enjoy productive and long term on-line presence.
t h e b o s s
3. Remember the meaning of the word ‘Friend.’ It is YOUR wall and NEVER be afraid to unfriend or block someone for bad behavior!
m a g a z i n e
4. Be consistent with your on-line handle so people can find you easier on every social medial platform.
b e t h e b o s s m a g . c o m
5. Have a profile picture of you. Never use the generic profile clip art, instead use a photo with a friendly and welcoming expression. 6. There is no such thing as a private page. Seriously, just get over that idea right now. If you put it on a social media site, anyone and yes I mean ANYONE can gain access to your page fairly quickly. 7. If you are a business owner, do not post religious, political, inflammatory posts. This is absolutely an iron clad rule that I never break…some people are not as rigid about this as I am (Once again, you are encouraged to create your own goof proof list!) 8. Do not post about alcohol or excessive partying. Many times I have seen business owners post several times every week about how drunk they are. Seriously, unless you needed a new bartender, would you hire a professional who bragged about habitual intoxication? Probably not. 9. Stop talking about your clients or customers – I have seen pages where a business owner complains about their clients. If you aren’t sure why this is potentially professional suicide, see item 6. 10. Protect your network and hide your friends list. 11. Never send a friend request to someone just because they are connected to a connection – that is not networking or an introduction…it’s tasteless spamming. 21

Between 2000 and 2009, the founder of MainStreetChamber, Mr. Larry Kozin, developed a successful National Chamber, which granted small-business owners a safe harbor Chamber of Commerce membership free for life. In 2009, after certain economic tragedies, companies baring names associated with governmental agencies were frowned upon. In order to survive, National Chamber was required to re-brand itself thus discovered a miracle name:MainStreetChamber. Mr. Kozin began a crusade to find leaders across the country to open chapters in their respective communities; in less than one year, the newly branded MainStreetChamber grew from 6 chapters to over 150. By practicing a unique, give-first business model, MainStreetChamber has secured its status as fastest growing chamber in the country.

“I will never do business with someone I have never met in person...” Famous last words! In a world of hyper connectivity via text messaging, instant messaging, smart phones, social media, Skype and the like, the “in person only” mindset has gone the way of the dinosaur. Individuals with that mindset will never realize their missed opportunities; i.e. the friendships, potential clients, increased sales from non traditional sources, power and referral partners that will assist you in growing your business to new heights, lucrative business relationships with complimentary organizations, the list goes on ad infinitum. But most importantly, the missed business ventures created from an idea and brought to fruition by people you may never have the chance to meet in person! Hence, the reason As the creator of Bundle Post, he eventually for this piece. approached me to be an Account Executive in Enter Robert Caruso. Let me take you back in time August of 2011 and soon after we became business for a bit (ad the sound of harps in the background). partners in the venture. As time has passed, we have I remember it well... well, with that intro, I make it both worked diligently to get this site to the level sound like some type of fairytale, but it was really it is and we are both able to see the big picture for quite simple, we met on facebook bantering the future of Bundle Post. back and forth on a common thread. Over time, we gained a mutual respect for one another and understood what our individual strengths were within the social media context. I admired his impeccable integrity and his drive to succeed. Understand, it took some time before Bundle Post was even mentioned. We took the time to build the social media relationship long before the idea of being business partners was broached. Robert understands the power of your network, so much so that he does not even refer to it as networking. It’s about the long term friendships that are built over time. 26
To truly understand the power of Bundle Post, let me explain how it fits into the massive machine known as social media. Websites such as Twitter, Linkedin, Facebook give us all the opportunity to connect with an enormous amount of people via the internet. However, for you to use these sites effectively and present yourself as an expert in your given field, you would need to be on each site 24 hours a day. Yeah, right?! Even if you had the ability to post status updates every hour on the hour, pretty soon, you would run out of ideas of what to post.
“I just had dinner...” “I just had dinner an hour ago...” “I just had dinner two hours ago..” Get the picture?
b e
Now, I know this is a silly example, but upon reading some of the statuses on Facebook or tweets on Twitter, it’s not too far from reality. Eventually, you will run out of ideas and your tweets or updates will become repetitive and uninteresting. Bundle Post with the use of Google Alerts allows you sift through the massive amounts of relevant content that is currently available on the internet by using key words or phrases that fit your particular needs. As a content aggregate, you are able to organize articles, blog posts, comments, videos and such, in a way that gives you the opportunity to feed your network fresh, useful information in real time and not bore them with the same ol’ same ol’.
t h e b o s s m a g a z i n e b e t h e b o s s m a g . c o m
Combined with Hootsuite, you can schedule the information to trickle into your status updates in a timely manner on each of the websites you are currently using for networking. Bundle Post finds you the content, Hootsuite helps you manage when and where it is presented, your network receives expert advice from a trusted friend, and over time, you reap the rewards of positioning yourself as a source for said information regardless of your industry. Had I had the “in person only” mindset, I would have missed the Robert Caruso chance of working with Robert on this incredibly vital piece in the Bundle Post social networking puzzle. A piece that is gaining traction and changing facebook.com/bundlepost the face of content management. Oh, on a final note, Robert Caruso and I have never met in person. I rest my case! IT STARTED WITH FACEBOOK
WAYNE BOOZER
Back in 2009, I was still very much a man without a school. I had moved from Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Houston, Texas the year prior at the request of my job in order to assistance with management duties at a satellite office in Channelview. My passion though, was (and still is) largely in the practice of martial arts. I had only recently made the rank of 4th degree master after 14+ years of continuous study in the art of Tang Soo Do; and while I had also moved away from the school where I trained and taught,
That day came that same summer on June 22, 2009 when, on a whim, a mutual friend introduced me to Dr. Jackie St. Cyr, owner of Innate Chiropractic Healing Arts Center in mid-town, Houston. By “introduced” I mean that it came in the form of a friend suggestion on Facebook. The mutual friend had a hunch that Dr. Jackie, as she prefers to be called, and I would hit it off very well; and it was well known how badly I wanted to actively start teaching again. The introductions turned into chatting on Facebook. The chatting evolved into a handshake at The Path of Tea. That fateful meeting would become the beginnings of Texas Coast Karate, the traditional martial arts school I now run in the mid-town area. Not only did Dr. Jackie and I find that we got along supremely well; but she also became my first official student, and volunteered her clinic to facilitate classes for the first year and a half of the school’s existence! Eventually, we outgrew it, and (again by virtue of Facebook) we were able to find an 800+ square foot facility inside of Metamorphocise Midtown! As a matter of fact, the person that recommended that

space to our school now also trains there as well. Fast forward to 2012, and Texas Coast Karate is now barreling towards its 3rd year in existence as a thriving

and growing school. The past 3 years have made me a sincere believer in utilizing social media to grow as an instructor, business owner and get my ideas out there. My use of Facebook, since then, has expanded to also using Twitter, Google+ and even maintaining a blog on Wordpress and a YouTube channel. That I’ve found is that the reach of the school goes far beyond local influence, and I’m starting to explore the idea of Skyping class (because I’m getting too many requests from people that aren’t close but want to get involved and train with me). I find that it’s largely a unique approach because as the senior instructor, it gives me an opportunity to interact more with the students on an unprecedented level. I also find that the students enjoy having me “on call” to answer training questions. …and it all started with a friend suggestion on Facebook.

SOCIAL NETWORKING BUILDS RELATIONSHIPS
SHERYL SITTS
As one who is a very active community member and networker, I have found social media to be a wonderful resource for deepening and expanding personal and business relationships. Effective users are authentic, allowing their character and personality to shine through and open doors.
b e
When I was ‘introduced’ to Shelly Rice online, even half a continent between us could not dampen our enthusiasm and energy. Soon thereafter, I discovered she was inviting select people to help her expand her Chocolate Blues and Business Networking Festivals. Having been recently laid off from my job and committed to launching my own company Journey of Possibilities, this was an excellent part-time opportunity to bring her dynamic business to my home community of Montgomery County, Texas while also helping fund the growth of my own business. It truly has been a win-win!
t h e b o s s m a g a z i n e b e t h e b o s s m a g . c o m
Being well connected in this community and maintaining contact through social media allows my connections to ‘introduce’ me to prospective vendors for these festivals, and it’s grown to where I do more business on Facebook and Linked In than any other media. HOWEVER, I must state that being a person of character out in the community brings credibility to my social media interactions and vice versa. While either can exist alone, it is the powerful combination that escalates your business. For my company Journey of Possibilities, Facebook has allowed me to create an inspirational page in which to build a community of like-spirited individuals who keep one another motivated and encouraged throughout the days and weeks. By sharing one inspiring message each morning and linking in my blog each week, I am able to connect and rejuvenate others. In less than a year, social media has connected me with individuals around the globe in Love and Light. As I continue to develop spiritual nature retreats, workshops, coaching, and more, my ever-growing social web allows me to offer new products and services worldwide. While this can be a powerful tool for building relationships, it can also destroy them. I’ve learned as a user firsthand that it’s always best to “leave others wanting more” lest you be hidden or deleted. Flooding news feeds is an unwelcome act, no matter what the metrics say. In one click, your reach with that individual goes away! Likewise, teaching or inspiring others makes your post a welcome greeting each day, whereas being ‘salesy’ will leave you out in the cold. Think before you post whether you would welcome such a message as a recipient! Happy social networking and I’ll see you online. Last year, around Thanksgiving time, I got invited to join a new group on Facebook. It was created to reunite folks who were part of a high school youth group that was International in scope. This was for all of us who were in the Florida region from a specific age range. I marveled each day as these names from 35 years ago started flashing across my screen. Having moved from Tampa in 1978 these were names I had totally forgotten about! I had great fun reaching out across the years and the miles reconnecting with these people. Now adults. I friended one guy, Danny, who took a while to respond to my request. Obviously not a big FB user. Fine. I wasn’t going to bug him. We were about 3 - 4 years apart which, in high school is huge. He was better friends with my older cousin, but since we shared the same last name, I guess he was more comfortable when he finally agreed to connect. A couple of months later, I received a FB invite from Danny to “Like” his new business page: How to Write Groundhog Day. With mild curiosity, I explored the new page and was surprised to learn that my friend Danny was the guy who wrote the screenplay for the famous movie “Groundhog Day” and he was launching a book chronicling his experience. The book was launching, poetically, on Feb 2, Groundhog Day. I immediately cruised to his personal Wall and publicly thanked him for the invitation. I also told him “You had no way of know this, but my son is about to graduate college with a degree in Film Studies because he wants to be a screenwriter. Perfect timing! I’ll be in line (online) to get his copy of the eBook. Much success to you.” He wrote back, making some cute comment about how I couldn’t possibly have a son old enough to be graduating college. Then, he very graciously (and genuinely) offered to chat with my son after he’d read the book, if he had any questions. As it turns out... Danny is also a professor at Harvard University, where he teaches Screenwriting. What a beautiful connection

to make for my son as he enters the interviewing season this Spring. VIRTUAL CONTINENTAL COACH
DEE WINNINGHAM
There is something about social media that connects you to people in ways that you would have never otherwise connected. As an executive coach for a fortune 100 firm for the better part of 14 years, when I decided to “moonlight” and coach privately social media was the avenue I used to get the word out. That was not my original intent when I started to use facebook. However as relationships grew out of status quotes about having a great day, and trips to the store, advice started to exchange hands and before you knew it I was coaching women and businesses in at least 10 different states. They even refer me to their friends and my business continues to grow, seemingly out of the blue each day! b e
These women, most of whom I have never met and some that I have traveled hundreds of miles to meet for the first time, were exposed to me via an avenue that people still seem to underestimate. Mike Murdock was quoted as having said, “Twitter is proof that GOD can connect you with anyone within 24 hours”. I feel the same is true for facebook, only within 12 hours!
t h e b o s s m a g a z i n e
My feeling about how facebook works so well to connect others is Social Media serves to break down walls and provides us with an intimate connection to each other. While using social media we all appear vulnerable, having both good days and bad days that are readily apparent to the world. Social Media levels the playing field. By the time many of my clients and I talk on the phone we feel like we know each other. We have updates on our job positions, what our kids are doing, and more often than not our relationship statuses. I say quite often on my status that as long as my good days outnumber my bad days, then I am winning! I feel that people need to know that their coach is in the game too!
b e t h e b o s s m a g . c o m
For those who use social media for what it was truly intended you are given unlimited access to millions of clients daily. It is up to you what you make of it. As for me I have been able to gain invaluable clients, publishing contacts that have me positioned to start coaching individuals to start their own publishing companies, access to many hours of research performed by someone else, and of course a place to grow my brand. Now with over 3000 friends and close to 3000 fans I am sought after for local and national events. Facebook simply does the work for me! Facebook is my library, my support system, my client pool, my administrative assistant, and my publishing company. In short Facebook is my business. Now if I could just catch on to this Twitter thing who knows what would happen! Dawniel Patterson-Winningham is a successful corporate performance coach for a fortune 100 firm. In addition she is a private life coach specializing in helping people achieve the dream of leaving their 9 - 5 and becoming entrepreneurs and provides pro-bono coaching to non-profit entities looking to expand their reach to assist others. FINDING YOUR NICHE AND ITS EFFECT ON MARKETING YOUR COMPANY
b e

m a g a z i n e
b e t h e b o s s m a g . c o m
JOE CHANDLER Waking up one day with the realization that your days are numbered is the one of the most shocking moments you will experience. For most people, it’s not bad information, such as bad news from a doctor or the death of a loved one. It’s the understanding down inside that I only have a short time on this planet to make mark and find my niche. Once you find your niche then everything else comes easily. By niche, I mean the one thing that brings joy to your life and puts everything else into focus. It could be as simple as cooking, coaching a sport, or helping others with their finances (if you’re a numbers person). How do you find your niche? First, take a hard evaluative look at your life. You must remove the clutter. Get rid of anything you do not like. If it’s giving you stress or irregular heartbeats, it needs to go. Second, write a list of things that make you happy, including hobbies. Third, take your list and cross off the things that are irrational or illogical. Winning the lottery does not count. These have to be things you do yourself that you can have control over. Fourth, narrow the list down to 3 to 5 items that are feasible. Feasible does not eliminate hard work or bumps in the road. Feasible means that you can with reasonable expectations achieve your goal. Finally, take these items and research to determine which one you will try first. You may find out that the first 2 or 3 are not really what you were thinking, then move on to the next. Once you find your niche the next step is to make it your business. For instance, if you love cooking, become a chef. If you love sports, become a coach. For me it was helping others market their businesses and grow their personal lives. I see a person’s business as an extension of them personally. If a person is in the wrong type of business for them, it shows quickly. Their energy and drive are not there. When it’s your passion, then energy and persistence follow naturally. Marketing your business is your personality. If your fun and light hearted, it should show through your branding and vice versa. It does not make since to brand your company as stiff and professional when you are bouncing at your desk basketball and wearing shorts to work. Therefore, find your niche and let it show through your company and its marketing. It’s all you and your life, so live it.

MARKETING BASICS WITH PINTEREST
ROBERT NEW
If you’ve been anywhere near a computer in the last 6 months you’ve probably been bombarded with Pinterest invitations or notifications. Pinterest is a fairly new social networking site that allows you to create sort of a virtual bulletin board where you can “pin” online image collages (called pinboards) and share them.
Just like Twitter, Facebook, and Google Plus, tag other users. Pinterest uses the “@username” format. Again, just like in your blog, comment on other people’s posts, or Tweets, or Pins. Vary your sources when you pin content. Don’t just stick to one or two other sources. Just like on Twitter where we re-tweet, on Pinterest make sure you “re-pin” another user’s content. They are notified and also get credit for your re-pin. Make sure you add a good description to an image. The description you add will stay with that image when other people re-pin it so consider putting your business name in the description. Pinterest is another good tool you can use to promote your business, brand or product. As with any tool, you have to use it to get the benefits. So before you write it off as yet another time waster on the internet, give it a try and take advantage of being on the front of a new marketing tool. 35

Fill out the “about” section. This is a must on any site. On Pinterest it will show up right under your photo. Make sure you have a photo or logo uploaded. This is also a must on any site you use whether LinkedIn, Facebook, or Twitter. A good, professional icon, avatar, image is a must. Connect with your Facebook and Twitter accounts. social media icons under your profile picture.
b o s s
If you want to start using Pinterest to promote your business, here are a couple of tips to get you started.
t h e
But you may be asking yourself what good Pinterest can be in your business. What can putting pictures with links to my products, art, photographs, designs, do for me? Why should I spend the time putting my creations on yet another social network. Well, consider that in January 2012 Pinterest drove more traffic to websites than LinkedIn, Google Plus, Reddit, and YouTube. COMBINED!
b e
Right now Pinterest is exploding for a few simple reasons. It is easy, fun, and can consume hours of your time. All the makings of a successful social network. One appealing aspect of Pinterest is that it is very visual with large, easy to view images. You can create different boards each with a category. You can follow other users, you can follow popular categories. You can share your own content.
BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
Social media has revolutionized our world. Even us more ‘vintage’ folks who want to remain as mentally young as a spring chicken, have taken to it with passion. Yet, with all its power, it will never replace face-to-face encounters. If it were not so, one would not see “Tweet Up” groups popping up around the country. And all too often, I encounter groups of folks who’ve met via social media arranging to get together over coffee at a mutually convenient location. A prominent business coach and consultant I met on Twitter and I have now met up twice “face-to-face” in NYC – an experience that has only strengthen a great relationship that began via 140 characters!
sitting across the table with java in hand, getting better acquainted with someone we know only via a profile on our computer screen. I strongly believe that social media is here to stay. But I am firmly convinced it will never replace the joy that comes from face-to-face encounters. While one can form a significant friendship (personal, business or hopefully both) via Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn just to name a few; thebest of both worlds is to combine the two.
Of course, the usual precautions exist for arranging to meet someone in person you only know via the web; but taking those into account, try out making connections on both sides of the laptop. Better still, join networking groups who have discovered that the “best” is to use social media to enhance the faceto-face experience. And make certain the “across the table or room” groups know the power of social When I first envisioned AWI (Affiliated Women media and have it as part of their benefit package. HAVE YOU MET VIRTUAL MARGIE?
highly organized and this was just the beginning of what she excelled at. I was blown away! I suggested that she start her own virtual assistance business and that she offer her skills to people in business who need help with projects. The next couple of days we worked together creating a business plan for her, she built her own website and www.VirtualMargie.com was born. For over 2 years now Margie has been my personal virtual assistant. She has helped me with dozens of projects and I’ve yet to find anything she can’t do and do well. She has made a huge difference in my business. Many of my friends who own businesses now use “Virtual Margie” and so do some of my clients. Everyone brags about her! Her skills are amazing and her service is spectacular. She is still too shy to make cold calls but she’s found her niche and she’s excelling in her own business.

In 2009 I received an email from Margie Baxley who was inquiring about a telephone sales job that I had available. Immediately I liked her. She was friendly and sweet and we instantly clicked. She told me that she was very shy and cold calling on businesses was going to be scary for her but she really wanted a job where she could work from home so that she could be there for her children, grand child and mother. Despite her shyness and anxiety about cold calling she really wanted the job. I was so impressed with her personality and her honesty that I hired her on the spot.

The next day I spent time training Margie, gave her leads, a “pep talk” and sent her off into the world of cold calling. Later that day Margie called me, upset and apologetic. Social media marketing: You dont have to navigate the social media alone By: Amanda Parker
b e

b o s s
m a g a z i n e
b e t h e b o s s m a g . c o m
It wasn’t long ago that a social media presence was a nice-to-have. Today, it’s a must-have. People are talking about your brand, your business and your customer service whether you want them to or not. When you participate you can help guide their conversations, and get your story out. You have the ability to become a resource of information for your customers, not just a vendor or service. Social media is an invaluable tool in increasing customer service and loyalty. But consistency is the key to success in social media – and that takes time. Often, companies rush out to create a Facebook page, YouTube channel and Twitter account without a set plan in mind and no idea of how to use these social media marketing tools effectively. Using a professional marketing or public relations firm that specializes in Social Media can often be the way to go – alleviating the stress of navigating social media and creating a well thought-out plan that will guide conversations and build relationships. For small businesses, social media marketing is very easy to be overlooked – even if there is a need for a social media presence, there are not enough employees or hours in the day to complete a social media strategy. If you are stuck trying to get your social media strategy off the ground, outsourcing is your best bet. There are many pros associated with working with professionals in the field: 1. Save money: You won’t be paying a full salary and you will be allocating an internal employee’s time to a task that you deem more important. 2. Save time. Doing social media work for your company is a full-time job. Twitter and Facebook need to be updated daily, and blogging once a month is not 38
sufficient to keep your following’s interest. Between researching, writing, posting, analytics, interacting and coming up with innovative strategies, many companies do not have enough time to keep up with the demands of a strong social media campaign. 3. Experience. Because social media is ever changing, it is wise to hire someone who knows a lot about the social media world and has a lot of experience in it A specialized firm will sit down with you and get to know your company, your industry and your goals. Where have you been and where are you going? They will learn about your stakeholders – customers, employers, general public – and determine where and how to interact with them in the social media world. They can offer analytics about who is interacting with you, and monitor what they are already saying about your company. When you work with a specialized marketing firm, they can be your marketing partner – working with you to grow your brand and your presence in the social media world. Social media shouldn’t be an after-thought. It should be just as important as any other marketing campaign, any event you attend face-to-face, any interaction your company has with your customer. You’re building a relationship. What is your social media, or lack thereof, saying about your business?

Although I have been in President’s Club for the past 4 years and this yearreaching Honor Society, AVON was never supposed to be my career. A Car accident occurred 4 years ago. Needless to say, I lost my job of 6 years at that time. I took miscellaneous odd jobs, one of which lasted two years, but was not paying my bills - my lawsuit from the automobile accident is what kept me financially above board. Something unforeseen and remarkable happened in October 2010. My AVON District Sales Manager, looked at me one day and asked me why I looked so sad. Her famous last words, “Do You Believe”. About a week later she andanother Unit Leader wanted to meet with me. This Unit Leader applied for a District Sales Manager in Pennsylvania and was moving in less than one month. I was asked if I would be interested in buying her active downline of 145 representatives in place of my non-active representatives of around 10. A “No-Brainer”. I also previously applied for a position at this hotel which looked promising but did fall through the cracks. AVON never failed me. Lo and Behold I strongly feel AVON was my calling from God. Frightened that I could lose what I just inherited, I hired a Career Coach. Well, March 2011 and then again in June and July of 2011 I mentored 3 Strong Representatives to become Unit Leaders. I am now an Advanced Unit Leader (AUL) until December 2011 when I mentored a 4th Unit Leader and became an Executive Unit Leader (EUL). Last year, my Avon family was #1 in Unit Sales for my District. This year we have increased our Unit Sales and will again be #1 in the District. 40
Presently, I am seeking Representatives/Unit Leaders to build on to my successful AVON Family ALL STARS. SENDOUTCARDS Danielle Mohr is a Mompreneur with SendOutCards, the #3 greeting card company behind the known storefronts. SendOutCards is affectionately considered the Netflix of the Greeting Card world and made the Inc 500 list of one of the fastest growing companies since 2009. Danielle’s role with SendOutCards is to remove the inconvenience and expense from sending cards and gifts for personal or business relationships. SendOutCards offers an opportunity to immediately act on a thought or feeling; after-all the mission is to “change lives…one card at time.” What is the key to Danielle’s success? The answer is duplication! Danielle & her husband gather customers and teach others how to gather customers. Danielle smiles, “It is that easy! We ask the following three questions: 1) “Do you buy greeting cards or gifts? (2) Do you know anyone who buys greeting cards or gifts? (3) “Would you like to make money on the cards and gifts you and others send?”” The other key to the Mohr Family’s success and their team success is that SendOutCards has No Inventory, No Home Parties and No Monthly Quotas. According to Danielle’s husband, Tim, SendOutCards is a “husband endorsed” company. He continues, “SOC was a winning opportunity for our family and now for others that we sponsor, coach and mentor.” Speaking of family, Danielle and Tim have three boys who they describe as the center of their world. Daniele shares, “SendOutCards has given us that opportunity to be more focused on providing quality time & experiences together as a family and living in the NOW and not the someday.” Visit the Mohr Family’s site www. cardsandmohr.com for a chance to try the system and send a FREE card. Experience first-hand how easy it is to send personalized, real greeting cards with your handwriting, your signatures and your photos from your computer in minutes. Tim said “After you create and click “send,” SendOutCards will then print, stuff in envelope, stamp and send it to a mailbox across town or across the country. And we do that for one card or one thousand… with or without a gift.” Danielle concluded our interview by tearing up, “SendOutCards is providing opportunities for our family that once were a dream; and can be the key to new opportunities for so many this year. We wish everyone Mohr Possibilities this year!” 42

how idiotic, silly, old fashioned, or lame it may sound to you at the moment. Second, restate the objection or concern to them in order for them to clarify their response to you. It gives you the opportunity to undercover what the problem is and gives them the opportunity to reveal the true objection instead of the knee jerk response they gave you. Third, ask lots and lots of questions to get a better understanding of where they are coming from and repeat their answers back to show that you are listening to them intently. Fourth, handle the objection or concern and finally, ask for the order again. It’s really that simple. Be prepared and be professional. Happy Selling! 43

So, how do you handle it when it happens? First and foremost, you handle it with the utmost respect to your client! If you ever do hear, “I need to pray about it,” and scoff at that response, that client’s prayer was answered IMMEDIATELY. They may still get the product, but not from you. Treat their response with respect regardless of
t h e
Let’s take a step back and look at this from the client’s perspective for just a moment. This is the client thinking now, “Wow, this thing is AWESOME! I want it, I need it, I have to have it!” Then whammo, the other voice jumps into their head, “Will this really do what it says it will? How am I going to pay for this thing? Can I really afford this right now?” Regardless of the questions they ask themselves, it doesn’t translate the same way when they respond to you. It comes out in terms like, “Not now, we’ll wait.” Regardless of their response, they want to know that they have enough information to make the right decision. And it is your task as the sales professional to make sure they have that information to make their decision.
b e
You know you nailed your presentation, you were so spot on you hit it out of the park. The client gave you buying signal after buying signal after buying signal with every response. You showed them exactly how your particular widget will solve their problem perfectly and they agreed with you! Then you ask for the order and hear things like, “I need to think about it,” or “I need to talk to my husband first!” Or I just love this one, “I need to pray about it.” The frustration wells up and you immediately want to smack the stupid right out of them. If you have been in sales for any length of time, it’s happened to you. And if it hasn’t yet, it will!

LOOK GOOD AND INSPIRE OTHERS TO ACT Top 5 Easy-to-Do Tips on How to get Successful Publicity with Guaranteed Results Publicity – we see it every day and most of the time. We hear it when we listen to radio, iTunes, online or in the car; we watch it, whether on television or video (YouTube) – so many ways to get publicity. It’s overwhelming when you think of all of the different means and opportunities at the same time, and the time involved. And, we are challenged when it comes to what to do first, how to get visibility or publicity for ourselves or for our clients. I struggled a little as I thought of how to create articles on publicity, how to bring this complex topic to you, and have you understand what publicity means, how to use it to grow your business or get visibility for you as a performer of some variety. There are hundreds, probably thousands, of topics from which to choose and you can find them yourself. Google it! Now what!
b e
How to make this different! Realistic! And, with results! Publicity for itself alone is a mere way of getting attention. You can get attention. Just make a scene! Start a fire! Commit a crime! See what attention that gives you. If you want to gather attention for your business, though, or to get attendees for an event, that’s a different story. So, in an effort to give you something a little different, and to have you “get” publicity, let’s explore some of the top tips for “How to get Publicity.”
t h e b o s s
1. Know who you want to reach with your publicity! Who is your target market? Be specific! Women or men is too broad for a target market. Know what age would buy your products? Understand whether your product is geographically limited. If you sell products on the Internet, then location is not as important as it would be to a business with a physical location.
m a g a z i n e b e t h e b o s s m a g . c o m
2. Have a plan! What do you want to accomplish with your publicity efforts? What are your goals? Have a six months plan. Magazines and newspapers have a deadline. Do your research. Get to know your target market and which methods of publicity reach them. Get a PR calendar (available online) and know which special dates are appropriate for your products or services. For example, if you sell flowers or candy, then Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day would be appropriate holidays. Which media will reach your audience? 3. Your message! Write your message so that it targets your customers and not you. Understand why your product is important to the group that you identified as the target market? What’s In It for Me (WII.FM) – Everyone’s favorite station! Research it! Ask. What makes your customers buy when they see your marketing message? Look at purchases you make. What causes you pick up that phone or go to a website to buy something? Ask someone whom you have identified as a potential customer or client. 4. Do your homework! Now that you have identified your audience, you have a plan, and the message is ready –what next! Which media is appropriate? You have everything available to you from television and radio to magazines, websites, blogs, expos and of course, the social media sites. Know which works best to get you the results you want. Look for appropriate publications, media that reaches your audience and start building a relationship. Be professional. Look at the website of the magazine, or show producer, and get a feel for the flavor, the look, the colors, the ambience. Check to see if there are submission guidelines. If possible, get an editorial calendar. Remember – it’s all about them, not you! 5. Make the Pitch! It’s time to send the first communication. Write it carefully. Edit it. Have a “zinger” for your subject line. Get someone else to look at it. First impressions are very important. See if the person you are contacting has a preference for email or phone calls. After you send the first communication, wait a few days and then follow up. That’s your job! You are the one seeking publicity. Follow up! Follow up! Follow up! Contact me if you have any questions or thoughts! Sandy Lawrence Email: sandylawrence@perceptivemarketing.com Website: www.perceptivemarketing.com

I have more belief in this product and what it can do for ones health, as well as income, than anything I have ever sold. We let our prospects try the water for FREE for 30 days. What other product lets you sample their goods for a month? Call our weekly conference calls to listen to the extraordinary health and wealth testimonials from people all over the country. We truly believe this to be the best water on the planet. And we do not want anyone to buy a machine that does not experience life altering results. Our compensation plan is patented. There are no “binary” legs or anything else you have probably encountered upon a meeting with other MLM’s or network marketing. We do not ask you to make a list of 30 people who have thousands of dollars to invest in a “new business opportunity.” How do you get started? Buy a machine for yourself. Experience what it can do for you. And then, GIVE the water away, for FREE. We cannot, and will not, charge for this. Share this water with as many people as you can. Your results will come back to you ten fold. 49

Now, no offense to any other MLM or network marketing organization. However, as I’d been a sales professional for 10 years, I had been propositioned by anyone and everyone to sell their product/service: All of the health pills, all of the health drinks in a bottle, all of the legal services, all of the credit card processing systems, the list goes on and on. Something about this water business struck a nerve with me though. I had done some research about giving your body a more alkaline base to help fight off disease. When I found out that this company produces a medical grade, alkaline, anti-oxidant rich water, I was intrigued. I further discovered that these machines, made in Japan, are the only water iozner on the market actually listed as a medical device by Japan’s version of the FDA.
m a g a z i n e
I got into this business by way of, what else, networking! I was working in sales at a print company, and unfortunately, my boss had the business sense of a sea lion and insisted on running things like it was 1995. I was frustrated and unhappy with the outdated and overpriced options I could offer to clients. However, part of MY marketing strategy to get new business was networking. I was a member of four area Chambers of Commerce, and two other business networking groups. It was there I met Larry, who represented a company making machines that produce alkaline antioxidant water.
