Dear Friends, Forty-five years ago at a formative time in American history, half a million young people, joined together at Max Yasgur’s farm for three days of peace, love, and music at the Woodstock Music and Art Fair. Today, Yagsur’s farm remains a gathering place, known as Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. We’re so pleased you’re here for our ninth season. If—as Keith Urban sings while strumming his guitar—you just want A Little Bit of Everything, we’re happy to oblige. This summer’s Pavilion lineup includes appearances by some of our most requested touring performers—James Taylor and Jimmy Buffett, as well as original Woodstock performers—Santana, CSN, and John Fogerty making his first appearance here since 1969. Country fans will swoon for Willie Nelson, Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, Miranda Lambert and Toby Keith… Plus, Zac Brown Band, Kings of Leon, Lionel Richie, and many more round out our season. We celebrate music and artistry beyond the main stage in the Event Gallery once again with a full lineup through early winter. We are proud to continue our Sundays with Friends Chamber Music Series, the Bradstan Cabaret Series and the free World Stage Music and Education Series for families and children. At the Conservatory, K-12 students participate in immersive arts and humanities educational and community programs including Saturdays at the Woods, Summer Stages, and Project Identity-specifically for teens. With the help of our donors, we have been able to continue to expand these important offerings and our youthful participants are benefitting from this generosity. As always, we work to preserve, interpret, and share our history, the ideals of the 1960s and its culminating event with a greater and wider audience, drawn to all that our beautiful county has to offer. I’m sure you’ll agree, Bethel Woods is a cultural treasure. You can play an important role by helping to ensure its continued financial viability. Ticket sales generate only a fraction of the annual funds necessary to present the diverse array of programs and opportunities that we offer. Please consider a contribution to help grow and preserve this gathering place for generations to come. You may give a gift by calling 845-295-2500 or by visiting our website: BethelWoodsCenter.org/Donate. Thank you,

Darlene Fedun

PEACE, LOVE & MUSIC

SOME OF THE CLASS OF 1969 RETURNS Around 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 1969 an unknown 22 year old, Mexican-American musician and his band stepped onto a stage in an upstate New York alfalfa field. By the time Santana left that stage and before their first album ever hit stores, they’d made a half-million fans and launched a career that would continue to this day. Just after midnight the first notes of “Born on the Bayou” rang across the darkened, rain-soaked hills as the headliner took the stage before a weary crowd. Creedence Clearwater Revival was one of the biggest bands of the day, but thanks to technical difficulties and the Grateful Dead’s infamously long and confused set, John Fogerty had his work cut out for him. He refused to have the performance included in the Woodstock film because he felt it was subpar. But 45 years later, he’s back and there’s no doubt this legend will deliver an unforgettable night.

10

Crosby, Stills & Nash was released in May of 1969, rocketing to the top of the charts. The band had performed live just once, so anticipation was high when they took the stage in the wee hours of Monday morning, joined by new band-mate Neil Young. No one imagined those moments would echo through the decades, or that 45 years later these legends would return to perform for some of those same ‘kids’ and thousands of new fans.

CARLOS SANTANA has sold more than 100 million records and over 100 million fans have attended his concerts. He’s been honored with 10 Grammys®, the Billboard Century Award and a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He also has a new album, Corazon, tour, and HBO Latino/HBO Latin America special to go with it. It features top Latin artists including Chocquibtown, Gloria Estefan, Pitbull, Soledad, and more. JOHN FOGERTY, who penned “Proud Mary,” “Fortunate Son,” “Born On The Bayou,” and “Who’ll Stop The Rain” says that when he tries to write a hit, it doesn’t work until he finds something in himself that resonates. Then the words and the music flow. So, it is interesting that his latest effort is called, A Song for Everyone, which features collaborations with Brad Paisley, Bob Seeger, and My Morning Jacket. Yet, it is still personal. “I love making music. So the idea that I get to do this for a living still, instead of selling insurance, well, that means the world to me.”

DAVID CROSBY, STEPHEN STILLS and GRAHAM NASH are so ingrained in musical history that simply their initials will do. They’ve each been inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, once as Crosby, Stills & Nash, and individually with The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and The Hollies, respectively. They continue to collaborate and work on separate projects. Always provocative, Crosby sums up the years for the group, “I’m older than I’d like and I’m creaky, but I’m doing alright.” This year it all comes full circle. Legendary Woodstock performers return and a new generation brings a fresh festival experience to this hallowed ground with Mysteryland USA. Built on the same ideals that brought a generation of kids together for three days of peace, love, and music 45 years ago... a new generation inspired by creativity and community, sustainability, and equality will carry the torch forward uniting the past, present, and future in a shared love of live music.

Mysteryland USA

The world’s longest-running electronic music festival makes its US debut on our hallowed grounds Memorial Day Weekend. Just as Woodstock represented the cultural and music shifts of a new generation, Mysteryland brings together the global forces of dance music, creativity, unity, and social responsibility of today’s youth. The three-day event will be a culturally immersive and engaging experience.

COME TOGETHER: Mark Lewis traces his love of the Fab Four to February 9, 1964 when America was smitten by the Beatles performance on The Ed Sullivan Show. “The Beatles made me want to be a musician. Whenever I heard or saw them, all I could think of was how great it would be to be a Beatle, to be bringing this music to people all over the world,” said Lewis. So he did the next best thing and formed RAIN® - A TRIBUTE TO THE BEATLES. It is a live multi-media musical journey through the life and times of the world’s most celebrated band. This stunning concert event is the next best thing to the Beatles, taking you back in time with the legendary foursome’s music. RAIN® follows the band's career from the British invasion and their landmark performances on The Ed Sullivan Show and at Shea Stadium, through their final albums Abbey Road and Let it Be. This two-hour show features classics such as

“I Want To Hold Your Hand,” “Hard Day’s Night,” “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” “Let It Be,” “Come Together,” and “Hey Jude.” The mood is set through original film footage and TV commercials from the ‘60s, and over the course of show, the musicians who play John, Paul, George, and Ringo evolve with their music, going from mop tops to bell-bottoms and peace signs. Said Lewis, “Our goal has always been to present this music in a live environment to audiences throughout the world, and most importantly, to maintain the integrity of the Beatles, and their music. After all, it is their music. We are just a few very fortunate guys that get to perform this music night after night. What’s better than that?” While The Beatles may never have performed at Woodstock, this summer Bethel Woods will present the next best thing on FRIDAY, JUNE 20.

RAIN® concert-goers receive FREE admission to The Museum at Bethel Woods’ special exhibit, AMERICA MEETS THE BEATLES. Just bring your show ticket.

THE ULTIMATE BEACH PARTY IS COMING TO BETHEL WOODS Calling all Parrotheads—dust off your Hawaiian shirts, leis, and parrot headgear—JIMMY BUFFETT has set sail for Bethel Woods. Singer, songwriter, author Jimmy Buffett is a legend of popular culture as the composer of such classics as “Margaritaville,” “Come Monday,” and “Cheeseburger In Paradise.” He has recorded over fifty albums, most of which have gone gold, platinum, or multi-platinum. His sold-out concert tours are an annual rite of summer for his legions of fans, affectionately known as Parrotheads. Buffett’s current album, Songs from St. Somewhere is “…less about cocktails and hangovers and more about stories and song lines,” writes Time magazine. Nonetheless, Buffett the prolific songwriter that he is, told Time, “There’s 16 songs on this thing and I’m happy with it and proud of all the people who contributed to it.” Born in the Gulf Coast town of Pascagoula, Mississippi, Buffett was raised in Mobile, Alabama. He is a fourth-generation sailor and fisherman, a pilot, a surfer, and a frequent traveler to remote and exotic places of the world, having become addicted to National Geographic magazine as a child. The lyrics to many of his songs are influenced by his travels all over the globe. As a best-selling author, he is one of only nine in the history of the New York Times Best Seller List to have reached 14

No. 1 on both their fiction and non-fiction lists. Jimmy has received two Grammy® nominations, numerous Country Music Association awards, and was the recipient of one of the nation’s highest songwriting honors when he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Jimmy Buffett & the Coral Reefer Band dock at Bethel Woods on JULY 17.

A SINGER-SONGWRITER FOR ALL TIME

JAMES

TAYLOR

JAMES TAYLOR has been one of Bethel Woods’ most requested artists, and this year he is sure to delight audiences on JULY 20. His music embodies the art of songwriting in its most personal and universal form. For more than 40 years, Taylor has been a compass for his fans, articulating moments of pain and joy, and letting his listeners know that they are not alone. “What I’ve always done as an entertainer is try to come up with things that people will find interesting, or compelling, or humorous.”

In a career marked by artistic triumphs, the past few years have been notable for both creative virtuosity and recognition of his exceptional achievement. Taylor was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2000, was selected as the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences’ MusiCares Person of the Year in 2006, and was nominated for an Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy Special for One Man Band in 2007. In 2012, Taylor was awarded the distinguished Chevalier of the Order

of Arts and Letters by the French government and in 2011, was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama. Both medals are their nation’s highest honors for artistic excellence recognizing “outstanding achievements and support of the arts.” While taking a tour hiatus in 2013 to work on his newest album, he added a private concert for the victim families of Newtown, CT, a memorial service for MIT Officer Sean Collier, and an appearance at The One Fund benefit concert in Boston. He was also a featured performer at President Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony in January. He has sold over 100 million albums since signing to the Beatles’ Apple Records in 1968. Over the decades, his songs have had a profound influence on songwriters and music lovers: “Fire and Rain,” “Country Road,” “Something in the Way She Moves,” “Mexico,” “Shower the People,” “Your Smiling Face,” “Carolina In My Mind,” and “Sweet Baby James,” to name a few. He has earned 40 gold, platinum, and multi-platinum awards and five Grammy® Awards. 17

YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS AT WORK Bethel Woods is grateful for your contributions. We steward your gifts to help strengthen the vitality of our community by involving people of all ages in the arts and humanities. Students from kindergarten through college take part in immersive programs on topics like freedom of expression, civil rights, music, and pop culture. They write, perform in theatrical and musical productions, and design sets and costumes. More importantly, young people learn skills that help them to succeed in school, and in life.

EMPOWERING YOUNG GIRLS Over the last few years, students at Nora Cronin Presentation Academy in Newburgh, NY participated in several Bethel Woods programs leading them on a journey of self-discovery. An after-school improv workshop helped to build self-confidence and teach the girls to make eye contact and speak up in real-life situations such as bullying. Said, eighth-grader, Kuyler, “I am learning that I can be anything I want to be.”

ONE BOY’S VICTORY: “I made the honor roll!” Jaden attends Monticello Middle School and was awarded a scholarship to Broadway in Bethel. During the two-week program, he auditioned, rehearsed, and then performed several roles in The Wiz. The experience gave him the confidence to perform in other plays and musicals. By far the most important outcome though, is that Jaden made the school honor roll for the first time ever. 19

TOBY

KEITH

GIVING BACK WHILE STAYING TRUE TO HIS ROOTS From his first No. 1 smash hit, “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” to his latest studio album, Drinks After Work, TOBY KEITH has been one of the most consistent, self-directed hit-makers of his era. His albums have sold more than 38 million copies worldwide, making Keith the American Country Awards’ “Artist of the Decade” and ranking him on Billboard’s list of the Top 200 Artists of the Decade. Keith is more than just an entertainer. He is recognized by Forbes magazine as one of the top-earning musicians in the world, thanks in large part to his tours, which have drawn more than a million fans annually for the last decade; his chain of I Love This Bar And Grill restaurants; and his signature spirit, Wild Shot, now the No. 1 premium mezcal in the country. At the core of Keith’s unparalleled success: his songwriting. He’s been honored by the Nashville Songwriters Association International as the Songwriter/Artist of the Decade, is a

three-time BMI Country Songwriter/ Artist of the Year and was named Billboard No. 1 Country Songwriter of the Decade. While Keith’s success is evident, the country music superstar’s dedication to giving back is his most impressive accomplishment. He’s an active supporter of the armed forces, performing and visiting troops worldwide with the USO. His charitable organization, The Toby Keith Foundation, provides support to patients and families living with pediatric cancer in his home state of Oklahoma. No matter the cause, Keith tackles it with the same commitment, heart, and soul he’s dedicated to his legendary music career. Keith drops in on the Pavilion stage SUNDAY, JULY 27 with COLT FORD and KRYSTAL KEITH. 21

SAY HELLO TO LIONEL RICHIE LIONEL RICHIE is the definition of an iconic entertainer - recipient of five Grammy® Awards, an Oscar, 16 American Music Awards, a Golden Globe, five People’s Choice Awards, a World Music Lifetime Achievement Award... the list goes on and on. His discography is part of the fabric of American pop music. He has sold 100 million albums worldwide and is one of only two songwriters in history to have a No. 1 record for nine consecutive years. While in college, Richie joined the band, The Mystics—later renamed The Commodores—as their saxophone player. The band’s rise to international success began as the opening act for The Jackson Five. Their first single, “Machine Gun,” released in 1974, reached No. 7 on the US R&B charts. The group went on to have many more chart-topping singles including “Brick House,” “Just To Be Close To You,” and “Too Hot Ta Trot.” In 1981, Richie began his solo career, becoming one of the most successful artists of the 1980s. He earned 13 top ten hits with nine No. 1 singles including “Endless Love,” “Truly,” “All Night Long,” “Hello,” and “Say You (Say Me).”

His 1982 self-titled album started a run of platinum plus albums throughout the ’80s, with 1986’s “Dancing On The Ceiling” becoming a pop and R&B classic. He also co-wrote—with Michael Jackson —the Live-Aid classic, “We Are The World.” As a songwriter, Richie was known for his ability to write without genre boundaries, a talent demonstrated in the success of mega hits such as, “Three Times A Lady,”“Stuck On You,” “Lady,” “Still,” and “Easy.” Richie released his eighth studio album Coming Home in September 2006. The album’s first single, “I Call It Love” became his biggest hit in the U.S. in ten years, peaking at No. 6. In 2012, Richie reworked some of his biggest hits as duets with country music superstars like Shania Twain, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, Darius Rucker, and Little Big Town. The album, entitled Tuskegee, reached No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 list. Today, Lionel Richie continues to push his music forward while continuing to thrill his loyal fans. Say “Hello” on SATURDAY, AUGUST 2 on the Pavilion stage with CEELO GREEN. 33

RIDE THE MECHANICAL BULL WITH

KINGS OF LEON

Three-time Grammy Award winner, KINGS OF LEON are touring this summer in support of their sixth studio album, Mechanical Bull, which Rolling Stone describes as touching on “the group’s identities of the past decade: revved-up garage rockers, Southern-soul disciples, masters of arena bombast.”

they met songwriter Angelo Petraglia who helped them hone their songwriting skills and introduced them to the musical influences of Thin Lizzy, The Rolling Stones, and The Clash. Youngest brother Jared and cousin Matthew moved to Nashville in 1999 to join them, and Kings was formed.

When Kings of Leon released their third album Because Of The Times in April 2007, Entertainment Weekly called it their “crowning achievement,” while Rolling Stone wondered: “How good can the Kings of Leon get? They’ve already gone further than anybody could have guessed.”

They gained fame in 2003 through their first album Youth & Young Manhood, scoring a UK Top 40 hit with “Molly’s Chambers,” But it was 2004’s A-Ha Shake Heartbreak (which peaked at No. 25 on the Billboard 200) that landed the band a spot on U2’s 2005 North American tour in 2005.

This Tennessee quartet of brothers Caleb, Nathan, and Jared Followill and their first cousin Matthew, burst onto the alternative rock scene in 2000.

Since then, the Kings have been enjoying astonishing world-wide success. They sold out Radio City Music Hall and the Greek Theater in Hollywood. In Europe they recently sold out London’s 20,000-seat 02 Arena in less than an hour.

The three Followill brothers grew up in Tennessee with their father, a Pentecostal minister, and their mother, Betty-Ann. Much of their young lives were spent on the road through the southern United States wherever dad, Ivan was preaching. When their parents divorced in 1997, Nathan and Caleb relocated to Nashville and embraced rock music and the lifestyle they had previously been denied. There 34

Said front man and lyricist Caleb: “There’s never a time that we’ll make a record and won’t attempt to do something better than what came before.” Kings of Leon play the Pavilion stage SATURDAY, AUGUST 16 with YOUNG THE GIANT and KONGOS.

THE SOULFUL, ROMANTIC AND INSPIRATIONAL STYLE OF

JOSH GROBAN With his sixth studio album, All That Echoes, JOSH GROBAN has built on the touchstone artistry that has made him a global pop star for more than a decade and expanded his ambitious reach into richly rewarding new territory. To no one’s surprise, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The inspiring first single “Brave,” one of seven songs on the album he co-wrote, shows off his accomplished, personal songwriting. From the Academy Award-winning “Falling Slowly” from the movie and Tony Award-honored spin-off Broadway musical Once, to Stevie Wonder’s “I Believe,” through his continued explorations of the poetry of Spanish (“Un Alma Mas,” featuring Cuban-born trumpet great Arturo Sandoval), and Italian (“E Ti Prometterò,” a duet with Italian star Laura Pausini), spotlight his singular talents as a masterful interpreter. “The album was really sparked by an energy I had on the road,” he says of his 2010 Illumination tour. It’s when his writing and ambition took full flower. Those concerts were playful, intimate, and powerful, with measures of

musical virtuosity and spirited, spontaneous personality. It brought him a rising career in movies and television, with recurring guest role on The Office, a sparkling part in the Steve Carrell/ Julianne Moore film “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” and a as costar of the upcoming small-ensemble comedy “Coffee Town.” Groban recorded his first album, Josh Groban, in November 2001. It was certified multi-platinum and he’s never looked back. His next three releases Closer, 2003; Awake, 2006; and Noel, 2007 were all certified multi-platinum, and in 2007, he was charted as the number-one best selling artist in the United States with over 21 million records in the nation. To date, he has sold over 25 million records worldwide. Similar in spirit to Bethel Woods’ own mission, Groban launched the nonprofit organization Find Your Light Foundation in 2011, to “enrich the lives of young people through arts, education and cultural awareness.” On SATURDAY, AUGUST 23 this outstanding arts advocate brings us a truly special evening. 37

THE PLATINUM LIFE OF

MIRANDA

LAMBERT At just 30 years old, MIRANDA LAMBERT, the Texas-born, platinum blonde is country music’s reigning female vocalist. Her third album Revolution was named album of the year by the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music, which also bestowed the same honor on her sophomore album Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. She received the top country female vocal performance honor at the most recent Grammy® Awards for “The House That Built Me.” She’s been named one of People’s Most Beautiful People and one of Maxim’s Hottest Women of Country. The feisty runner-up on Nashville Star in 2003 was signed by Sony Nashville who knew she had the moxie and know-how to write many of her own songs and be successful at it. Miranda’s major label debut album, Kerosene (2005), went platinum. Each of her subsequent albums debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Album Chart, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2007) is currently certified Gold; Revolution (2009) is certified Platinum, and Four the Record (2011) is currently certified Gold. 38

Miranda’s fifth album, Platinum, will be released this June. The title is more is more than just a song on the album. “Platinum is my hair color, my wedding ring, the color of my Airstream, and the name of one of my favorite beers,” says Lambert. “It’s about a lifestyle.” “Automatic,” the first single from Platinum, got off to a historic start, debuting at No. 35 and No. 26 respectively on the Country Aircheck and Billboard country airplay charts. Miranda, who wrote half of the songs, describes the album like this: “All 16 songs together make up a picture, and without one of those songs, it just looks like abstract art,” she said. “I wanted it to be perfect; I wanted it to matter,” she continued. “There’s humor on this album, and nostalgia, and it’s feminine.” Miranda Lambert will close the Pavilion summer season with JUSTIN MOORE, THOMAS RHETT, and JUKEBOX MAFIA on SUNDAY, AUGUST 31.
