Dear Friends: Welcome to Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. We are honored you’ve chosen to join us for one of our many wonderful programs and events this year. We aspire to provide you with an unforgettable experience that not only uplifts your spirit, but inspires you to help make the world better in some way, great or small. We believe that culture, creativity and the transformative power of shared experiences contribute to health and happiness. As a not-for-profit cultural center we provide opportunities to participate in the arts, to explore and preserve the heritage of this historic site, to make memories with loved ones, while also inspiring pan-generational conversations that foster empathy, understanding, civility, and societal improvement. The arts and humanities bring so much life, understanding and wonder to our daily lives. Thanks to our members, donors and volunteers we are able to offer many programs at low or no cost to those who might not otherwise be able to participate. This summer, PI: SESSIONS, a pilot project of BETHEL WOODS ON MAIN, brings our programming to the main streets of our community and our WOODSTALK: LIVE series returns, providing adults the opportunity to learn, rekindle their imagination, and explore their creativity. THE MUSEUM continues to provide context and understanding of the Sixties era and its lessons while drawing ties and increasing relevance to life today. This year’s special exhibit, LOVE FOR SALE: THE COMMERCIALIZATION OF THE COUNTERCULTURE, set up as a 1970 suburban home, transports guests back to the era and provides a glimpse of what life might have been like. Legends such as NEIL DIAMOND and ROD STEWART will make their debut on the Pavilion stage, and a first-ever collaboration with K104 radio will bring KFEST and some of today’s hottest acts including Jason Derulo and Sean Paul to Bethel. Please keep in mind that ticket sales generate only a fraction of the funds necessary to support the not-for-profit work of this organization and maintain these beautiful grounds for your enjoyment. Your support is critical to the sustainability of our efforts to preserve the historic site of the 1969 Woodstock festival, interpret the social, political and cultural impacts of the 1960s, and provide access to the arts and humanities in our schools and community. Thank you for joining us to enjoy the magic of Bethel Woods. Enjoy,

TAKE HOME A Hatch Show Print and
SUPPORT BETHEL WOODS’ MISSION Followers of music, art, and culture know there is an unmistakable look to an authentic HATCH SHOW PRINT. Once again, Bethel Woods, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit charity, has commissioned limited-edition sets of 100 numbered prints for each 2017 Pavilion performance. One hundred percent of the fundraiser’s proceeds support Bethel Woods’ preservation of the historic Woodstock site, and youth, family, and community programming. Posters will be on sale at each performance exclusively at the Bethel Woods merchandise stand and BINDY BAZAAR MUSEUM SHOP.
A small number of complete sets, including all 20 posters from the 2017 season, will be available to pre-order at the shop or at SHOPBETHELWOODS.COM while they last. HATCH SHOW PRINT is one of the oldest working letterpress print shops in America, operating in Nashville, TN since 1879. They create posters by pressing paper onto wood and metal letters and hand-carved images, with ink in between.

LOVE FOR SALE:
THE COMMERCIALIZATION OF THE COUNTERCULTURE Peace signs, love, flower power, and psychedelia. All symbols of youthful rebellion in the 1960s, adopted by the mainstream by the end of the decade. The counterculture rejected establishment values of conformity and commercialization, and believed that much of 1950s and 1960s American life was inauthentic, hypocritical, and stifling. That didn’t stop Madison Avenue from cashing in on the counterculture, using the symbols, visuals, and values of the anti-establishment movement to sell their products—everything from acne cream, electronics, cars, clothes, and soft drinks to kitchenware, furniture, and home decor. This year’s special exhibit at THE MUSEUM AT BETHEL WOODS explores how the counterculture was commercialized and became part of the era’s popular culture. Guest curator of the special exhibit, LOVE FOR SALE, Jill Sillos-Rooney, Ph.D. drew from the extensive and eclectic pop culture collection of author Michael Stern to transport the viewer to a suburban home in 1970 to see how pervasive the counterculture invasion of middle America had become. From the wood-paneled, flowered sofa living room with the family television tuned to Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In or
The Partridge Family, to the teenage girl’s bedroom strewn with 45 RPM singles and teen idol photos. Love for Sale places the artifacts of the ’60s—some rare, some banal—in the home context where they lived. The politics of the era can be seen in the peace symbols, anti-war banners, and posters in the teen boy’s room, and the immersive environment of the blacklight poster gallery recreates at least part of the head shop experience of the era. LOVE FOR SALE: THE COMMERCIALIZATION OF THE COUNTERCULTURE is on view at The Museum at Bethel Woods THROUGH DECEMBER 31 during museum hours. Admission to the special exhibit is included with a regular museum ticket, or guests may purchase special exhibit-only tickets for a nominal fee.
MUSEUM TICKETS ARE

SHARING EXPERIENCES AND BUILDING COMMUNITY
Festivals are a part of Bethel Woods’ DNA, stretching back to 1969 when young people came together in peace and harmony and created a community united by generosity and love. Bethel Woods’ festivals also focus on community. Each celebrates the farmers and brewers, vintners and artisans, crafters and makers from across the region, bringing together friends and family to make memories and celebrate—no matter the season. In the summer, A GATHERING AT BETHEL WOODS returns, celebrating peace, love and music. Join us for this FREE event on SATURDAY, JULY 1, featuring live music, guided tours, interpretive walks and talks about the historic Woodstock festival site, art activities and games, topped off with fireworks at dusk. A variety of food and 20
drink, as well as jewelry, gifts, crafts and more, will also be available for purchase. Admission to The Museum is just $10 this day (free for Sullivan County residents with I.D.). Rain Date July 2. Kicking off Labor Day weekend, the 19th annual HARVEST FESTIVAL returns each Sunday thru October 1. Featuring live music, family activities and the offerings of nearly 100 local farmers and makers, the Harvest Festival gathers the community to celebrate the season and each other. It also provides that rare opportunity to talk with the individuals who create, grow or nurture the treasures you can take home.
As the air turns crisp, excitement turns to the Wine and Craft Beer festivals. At the WINE FESTIVAL on October 7, more than 40 regional wineries showcase their reds, whites and other blends while music plays, and specialty vendors offer their goods—including artisanal crafts, specialty foods, wine-related products, and more. VIP, Designated Driver, and General Admission tickets offer an experience for everyone 21+. The following weekend, the CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL brings together breweries from across the region eager to share their latest IPA, ale, lager, cider, and more. Between the great live music, unique shopping vendors, games on the Great Lawn and a brand new VIP experience, this year’s festival on October 14 promises to be the best yet! As the year draws to a close and the snow starts to fly, the HOLIDAY MARKET returns on the first weekend of December. A family tradition with a holiday film, photos with Santa, and a one-stop market to “shop local” as you check gifts for loved ones off your list. Jimmy Eat World’s Rick Burch
Reflects on a Lifetime of Music your passion. “Art is passion. Follow ppy, and you’re Do what makes you ha going to do it great.” Alt-rock darlings JIMMY EAT WORLD crashed into the mainstream with the release of their 2001 album, Bleed American. The members of this Tempe, Arizona-based band, which started in 1993, have spent more than two decades generating compelling and original tunes.
22
“Nothing like that had ever happened before,” Burch says. “It’s one of those things that just came together.” The influence of Woodstock on nearly all modern music, especially the rock genre, is undeniable, according to Burch.
Since joining the band in 1995, Rick Burch has been providing Jimmy Eat World with bass and backup vocals throughout the production of eight of the group’s nine full-length studio albums. He has also participated in countless tours, and says that both touring and recording provide unique experiences.
As far back as middle school, he and fellow bandmate Tom Linton were playing music together, laying the foundation that would eventually become Jimmy Eat World. Maintaining complete creative control over their music has been a hallmark of the band since it signed its first record deal, when its members were just finishing up high school.
“I love recording because it’s being creative,” Burch says. “Performing…it’s different. It’s going around and sharing what you’ve created. People enjoy it, which is really rewarding.”
“We get the last say in the actual music and artwork. It has allowed us to guide our artistic endeavors,” says Burch. “That has been a huge factor of who we are today.”
The band, which is firmly rooted in the traditions of both rock and pop-punk, is excited to be performing on the hallowed grounds of Bethel Woods.
Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is excited to host INCUBUS and JIMMY EAT WORLD with special guest ATLAS GENIUS on SUNDAY, JULY 16.
We’ll make your heart sing.
While you’re here take in all that we are: full of life, color, and simple country pleasures. Dine on fresh food the farmer raised. Drink a hand-crafted beverage from the still or the tap. Smile when you remember what it feels like to jump in a lake. Hike through our woods and forage for lunch. Gather around a campfire and cook s’mores. After all that, sleep in a quaint B&B, vacation rental, country inn, or resort hotel. Your heart might just skip a beat at how refreshed and recharged you feel when you get home.

Santana
comes home With music and a mission to serve In mid-afternoon, August 16, 1969, the largely unknown Santana took the stage at the Woodstock festival. “All the preparations flew out the window when we were told we had to go on hours before our time slot,” says CARLOS SANTANA. “All I could say was ‘God, please help me stay in tune. Please help me stay in time. By the grace of God, it all came together and we found our groove amongst the sea of people.’” That groove, especially “Soul Sacrifice,” is considered to be the band’s breakout performance and a highlight of the festival.
36
Santana was formed in San Francisco in 1966 and came to the attention of impresario Bill Graham who got the unknowns added to the Woodstock line up. A month later they released their first album and Evil Ways became a top 10 single. Twenty-four albums, nine Grammy’s®, three Latin Grammy’s®, a solo Grammy® for Carlos, sales of 90 million copies and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have not changed Santana. “In many ways, I am still the same person I was back then,” says Carlos, “I still believe in peace, love, and understanding… love
over war.” He says he is a child of BB King, Tito Puente, Miles Davis, John Lee Hooker, Otis Rush, and Buddy Guy. His biggest influence was his father, violinist Jose Santana who started working with him at the age of five. Since young Carlos couldn’t make the instrument sound like his father did, he applied what he learned about melody to the guitar. Santana returns to Bethel Woods on AUGUST 5. “To me it is a holy place,” he says, “with one heart and one love we came together and made it work. It was like plugging into a whole bunch of hearts–all those people at the same time.” The band decided long ago they were going to make a difference in the world with their music and use the energy that it brings. Santana sees parallels with the values of the ‘60s in current events. “What is happening around the world today reminds me of the start of the Woodstock generation. The kids are starting to find their voice and speak out against injustice and hate. I am hopeful that we will see today’s youth come together as one voice, just as we did in the ‘60s.”
mily we became a fa e m ti in t en “For a mom the power d knew we had an ck to ds oo at W place. orld a better to make the w g today” still resonatin is n io at br vi That Like Bethel Woods, Santana has a mission to provide access to the arts and educational opportunities to underserved children through his involvement with the MILAGRO FOUNDATION, which has a passionate belief that children everywhere deserve to live a life with full access to proper healthcare and education, as well as opportunities to develop into creative
human beings. “When I play a concert with business partners around the world, it is to create more energy to help children in need of healthcare, education, and the arts. The most rewarding thing is for me is knowing that we have made a difference in someone’s life…that is better than any award I can ever receive. This is the heart of all things Santana.”

THE SITE OF THE WOODSTOCK FESTIVAL IS NOW A
NATIONAL REGISTER
HISTORIC PLACE DO YOU OFTEN WONDER WHAT IT MUST HAVE BEEN LIKE THAT SUMMER OF ’69? Do you wish you could go back in time and experience the Woodstock festival for yourself? Do you hope the grounds are preserved and interpreted for future generations to explore? We do! From museum guests to Pavilion performers it is undeniable that the vibe from 48 years ago still lives on. History was made here and the peace and love of the Woodstock festival still resonates on
38
these grounds. Bethel Woods is proud to announce that the site of the Woodstock festival has been officially placed on the NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES, formally acknowledging the significance of the site’s heritage. The National Register is a program of the National Park Service and U.S. Department of the Interior which recognizes the significance of buildings, structures and sites throughout the country.
Bethel Woods takes its stewardship of the Woodstock festival historic site seriously and has begun the first phase of projects which will restore, preserve, and enhance the guest experience of the historic site. The first of these projects is well underway. The propagation and cloning of several trees that stood ‘witness’ to the festival in 1969 has begun. This includes the historic Message Tree, which served as a communication hub for attendees in an age without mobile devices. In 1969, the Bindy Bazaar served as a community and marketplace for Woodstock attendees. Bethel Woods has begun the restoration of several of the footpaths that crisscrossed
these woods for guests to walk and explore themselves. The colorful sign that marked the entrance to the Bindy Bazaar during the festival will be reproduced, as will the famous, hand-painted directional signs that proclaimed the “High Way,” “Groovy Way,” and “Gentle Path.” This is only the beginning. Future projects will further enhance the historic site drawing tourists from across the country and around the world. These plans include restoring the landscape contours where the Woodstock stage stood and marking the footprints of the stage and other key structures on the field, as well as developing an interactive self-guided tour of the grounds.

These projects were made possible by a challenge grant from the Lindsay and Olive B. O’Connor Foundation and matching funds from National Trust for Historic Preservation and several individual donors. 39

MICHAEL & JAMEE SCHLEIFER
give to create good in the world MICHAEL SCHLEIFER was a young boy coming of age when his family began visiting Sullivan County in 1968, so he knows the history behind Bethel Woods’ storied location very well. Michael and Jamee, both educators—now live just two miles from the historic site. The Schleifers have been Bethel Woods members since 2006. Michael is a product of the Woodstock generation, and while he “feels connected to the land, the site, and the music,” his connection goes much deeper. Like many who grew up in the Sixties, Michael and Jamee, believe that we all have the power to make a difference and that together we can change the world.
“WE WANT AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE TO ENJOY ACCESS TO THE ARTS BECAUSE THEY ARE FUNDAMENTAL TO CREATING GOOD IN THE WORLD.” Beyond their annual membership, the Schleifers also contribute unrestricted funds to Bethel Woods. Unrestricted funds are just one of many ways you can give to Bethel Woods. FOR MORE INFORMATION PLEASE CONTACT THE DEVELOPMENT OFFICE AT 845.295.2403.
