Dear Friends: Welcome to Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. We are honored that you have chosen to join us for one of the nearly 300 programs we offer annually. As a not-for-profit cultural center, it is our mission to inspire, educate, and empower through the arts and humanities; and it is our hope that each of our programs, made possible by the generosity of our donors, sponsors, members, and guests, will do just that. This summer, our efforts to preserve and interpret the cultural, social and political events of the 1960s while presenting a selection of artistic opportunities for a variety of audiences will be at the forefront of our work. Our reimagined arts and humanities-based programs like PLAY: Theatre, PLAY: Music, and Project Identity: Sessions will expose young participants to the transformative power of the arts. New series like Moonlit Movie Mondays will bring the community together to enjoy classic cinema under the stars on our outdoor Terrace Stage, while the exceptional Sundays with Friends Chamber Music Series and Bradstan Cabaret Series return to our intimate Event Gallery. The Museum at Bethel Woods will continue to attract visitors from around the world with its work to interpret the decade of the 1960s, while preserving the historic 1969 Woodstock site. This year’s special exhibit, THREADS, presented in collaboration with Andy Hilfiger, connects ’60s fashion to modern rockwear. The Pavilion Stage will of course continue to host some of the world’s greatest talent —from superstars like Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga to rock stars like Van Halen and Def Leppard to icons like Neil Young and Jackson Browne—enabling hundreds of thousands of guests to again gather on our historic grounds, united by a universal love of music. Bryan Adams

On June 19 Bethel Woods will host Bryan Adams as he celebrates the 30th anniversary of his Reckless album known for mega hits like “Run to You,” “Kids Wanna Rock,” and “Summer of ’69.” The summer of ’69 holds a lot of significance at the Bethel Woods site, but for Bryan Adams, the song is not about the iconic Woodstock festival but rather “youth, nostalgia, and looking back on making love for the first time.” His songs became coming-of-age anthems for thousands of young people who remain dedicated fans today. “One of the great joys of returning to play the entire album is to hear the people singing the songs. It’s the greatest tribute a songwriter could ever have,” Adams says of this year’s anniversary tour. A talented guitarist, singer, and songwriter, Adams is a versatile artist whose skills and interests extend far beyond music. For well over 10 years, he has been developing a reputation as a photographer capturing shots of a variety of well-known celebrities. He has intertwined these passions into the work of The Bryan Adams Foundation. “Lately we have been focusing on helping the wounded veterans returning from Iraq

and Afghanistan. I released a book of photos last year called Wounded - The Legacy of War which is comprised of a series of British war veterans who have returned very badly wounded from duty.” He also works to ensure that today’s children have the same opportunities to be inspired by the arts as he did. “One of the programs we support with the foundation is supplying musical instruments to my local school in London. It has so far been a great success.”

FROM CENTER FIELD TO CENTER STAGE

Bernie Williams TALKS ABOUT HIS PASSIONS “I don’t know if I was as gifted as some of the kids that I grew up with,” four-time World Series champion and five-time baseball All-Star, Bernie Williams says modestly. After a 16-year career with the New York Yankees, Williams has been able to turn a passion for music that developed as a child growing up in Puerto Rico into a second successful career.

“A profound influence was my mother,” recalls Williams. “A 40-year educator in Puerto Rico public schools, she believed in well-rounded education for her kids, so in addition to core curriculum, she wanted to make sure we had exposure to athletics and the arts, specifically music. We weren’t rich but we were taught the value of education.”

“I think that the one quality my family instilled in me was perseverance and a strong work ethic. A lot of what people perceive as being natural is really the product of a lot of long nights and hard work.” Two things that are still constant forces in Williams’s life, who today is a fulltime student studying Jazz Performance.

His exposure to the arts as a child has led Bernie to become involved with causes that help to ensure young people are able to have similar experiences, including Little Kids Rock. “The organization brings instruments and music closer to kids in schools which have fallen victims to the budget cuts in the arts and music. My involvement certainly draws from my life experiences, and how much fun I had growing up and learning an instrument, and how rewarding it was when I would learn to play a song and be able to perform in front of others.” Long-time fans of the multi-talented and gracious Bernie Williams can enjoy his transition from center field to center stage, and a lucky few who purchase VIP tickets will get the chance to meet the legend, when he performs in the intimate, indoor Event Gallery on June 28. DEF LEPPARD’S PHIL COLLEN TALKS ABOUT THE POWER OF CREATIVE EXPRESSION “I didn’t pick up the guitar because I wanted to be a musician - for me, it was a tool of expression, a way to communicate,” explains Collen who joined Def Leppard in 1982. Receiving his first guitar at 13 changed his life. “I never suffered teenage angst when everyone around me really did. I lived in East London and it was tough. Things my buddies got into were awful, but I was able to channel it through music. I had an outlet, a way to let off steam.”

As a teenager, his cousin first introduced him to Woodstock alumni like Jimi Hendrix and Richie Havens, who Collen lists as major influences today. “My cousin would have

all these bootlegs of everything from Deep Purple to Woodstock. To me, Woodstock was the mecca – it was a big, big deal.” The thought of performing for the first time on those sacred grounds on July 11 gives Collen a thrill. “I’m excited. I really am. I seriously am – and I don’t usually get like that. This is actually really cool. I’m amazed we’ve never played there before, so this will be great.” As someone whose life has been transformed by the power of the arts, he believes strongly that children should have open access to a variety of artistic opportunities. “A lot of young people are

missing the ability to communicate verbally and they get really frustrated and confused. The arts provide a way to let it all out.” And Collen stresses that it’s not just music that can have this effect. “Any kind of art form – from poetry to painting – I’ve brought myself to tears writing songs and I’m not a weepy kind of guy, so it’s amazing that it can bring it out of me. I suggest it to anyone.” An open mind and fierce belief in individuality have led Collen to a successful and rewarding career. “I don’t like segregation in any form and that comes out in my music and the way I live my life. Blend it all together. There’s good stuff in everything. If you’re

secure and you feel that there’s integrity in what you’re creating, that’s what matters.” And as Collen explains, blending all genres of music is the best way to pay tribute to the legacy of Woodstock. “What was Woodstock? It was bringing together all types of music. So stay open – that’s what keeps the spirit going.” Def Leppard joins us with Styx and Tesla on July 11.

SHARE THE STAGE WITH KIDZ BOP Five-year-old Andrew Demarest was sitting on the lawn at a Green Day concert when front-man Billie Joe told the audience, “I need a drummer on stage.” Demarest nervously waved his hands high in the air hoping to be picked. He wasn’t, but at that moment he knew he wanted music to be a part of his life. Demarest is fulfilling his dreams as a drummer in Walden’s New York School of Music. He and his bandmates, all 15-16 years old, Brendan Cicardo, Josh Doro, Matthew Kocienda, Ben Kohn, Shawn McNair, and Rose Tommasi, are one of two teen local acts who will open for Kidz Bop, the number-one music brand for kids, on July 18 at Bethel Woods.

Sharing the spotlight will be Breach The Barrier, a local band from Narrowsburg. Led by 15-year-old McKinley Bernitt, who has participated in arts and humanities education programming at Bethel Woods, including Project: Identity, these young rockers promote “being yourself, being an original and not being afraid to breach the barrier.” Joining McKinley on stage are: Bryce Maopolski, 12; Reece Maopolski, 11; and John Muzuruk, 13. Bethel Woods is delighted to partner with Kidz Bop to provide this exciting opportunity to showcase the talent of our local young people, and together the organizations have also organized a special miniperformance for 200 children served by the Boys & Girls Club, as we continue our work to make the arts accessible to everyone in our community. Since 2001, Kidz Bop has sold over 15 million albums and 4.3 million tracks, releasing 28 albums of pop song covers performed by a cast that changes every three years. The current Kidz: Bredia, Matt, Grant, and Ashlynn will also spend time talking chatting with the Club kids about the importance of music and the arts in their lives.

It Was All…Alright AN INTERVIEW WITH THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND LEAD SINGER AND FOUNDING MEMBER DOUG GRAY Formed in 1972, The Marshall Tucker Band plays about 200 shows annually with no plans of stopping. In his southern drawl, Doug Gray explained, “When someone has a tear in their eye or a smile on their face, that’s what keeps you around for 40 years.” Returning from Vietnam in late 1969, he recalls the lingering impact of the Woodstock festival. “There was freedom of music… expression. An opportunity for [people] to state what they wanted through music.” As explored in The Museum at Bethel Woods, the festival occurred at the height of the hippie movement, which challenged social norms. “Everyone thought they were just a bunch of lowlife hippies, but I think Woodstock started something. It reminded people that it wasn’t so bad. So forget the problems—and remember that it was all alright.”

Gray also stressed the importance of musical evolution, describing himself as a fan of everything from American Idol to the Pointer Sisters to violinist Stephane Grappelli. “I don’t know what it is but certain songs just open up a thing in your brain and you say, ‘that’s cool’.” “I know music is getting better, it’s evolving back to emotional music. The same way you remember your first kiss, people remember the first time they heard music that spoke to them.” This summer, The Marshall Tucker Band returns with Lynyrd Skynyrd on August 14. Jackson Browne PERFORMS ON SEPT 19 For decades, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jackson Browne has been inspiring individuals through his words. Writing and performing some of the most literate and moving songs in popular music, and helping to define a genre of songwriting – one charged with honesty, emotion, and personal politics. From “The Pretender” to “Running on Empty,” “Take it Easy,” and “Somebody’s Baby” his songs resonate as the soundtrack to our lives.

The message has always been central to his music, and can be found throughout songs he wrote for himself, and others including Bruce Springsteen, The Eagles, Gregg Allman, Joan Baez, Linda Ronstadt, and the Byrds, among others. On the way to becoming one of the best-loved musicians of our time, selling over 18 million records in the U.S., he became a celebrated and well-known activist and arts advocate, too. He found an early interest in environmental, social justice and educational causes, fighting against Three Mile Island and nuclear power in 1979 and helping to form Musicians for Safe Energy. Political protest found powerful expression in his 1986 release, Lives In The Balance, and he’s been active in Farm Aid, Amnesty International, Why Hunger, and 1% for the Planet.

As co-founder of Success Through the Arts, Browne shares a similar mission with Bethel Woods, inspiring and empowering young people through the performing arts. His organization works with K-12 schools in South Los Angeles to level the institutional and achievement gaps by igniting a passion for the arts, enhancing self-esteem, academic achievement, self-discipline, and social responsibility. The latest album in Browne’s 40-year career, Standing In The Breach, continues his legacy of thoughtful reflection. A collection of deeply personal, sometimes political songs, explores love, hope, and defiance in the face of the uncertainties of modern life. He’ll answer countless requests from Bethel Woods audience by performing September 19.

A SPECIAL EXHIBIT AT THE MUSUEM AT BETHEL WOODS There is an undeniable connection between fashion and music: creative expression, joy, happiness. Some would say the two go hand in hand. Dare we say they are inseparable? Come see how the spirit and creativity of both blend in perfect harmony in The Museum’s Special Exhibit Gallery. Threads is an exhibit with attitude, where you can lose yourself for a while in hip

clothing and rock rags from the 1960s and early 1970s. You can even dress like a rock star in the “Rock Star Photo Studio” and post your photos to social media or email your friends. The exhibit is co-curated by Andy Hilfiger, fashion designer and musician who has toured with the Ramones, Kid Rock, and Blue Oyster Cult. It draws heavily on his personal collection of vintage clothing, and the rock couture he has created for stars including Stephen Tyler, Keith Richards, and others. Once asked whether he prefers designing clothes or performing music Hilfiger said, “I like wearing the clothes and playing the music.” Over 40 vintage outfits in four categories are featured, showcasing how 1960s clothing has influenced modern styles. Fashionistas, collectors, and rock fans of all ages will enjoy everything from street and rock fashions, to second-hand, haute couture, military, and theater styles. PEACE, LOVE, AND YOGA Sitting in a lotus pose before a crowd that approached half a million, he said music was “the celestial sound that controls the whole universe.’’ With that, Sri Swami Satchidananda opened the 1969 Woodstock festival. Over the course of the weekend Tom Law, a yoga practitioner and member of the Hog Farm commune, led morning yoga practice that helped to keep the peaceful vibe. On September 12, Satchidananda’s Integral Yoga Institute and Law will return for the first annual Live Well, Be Well Festival – A Day of Peace and Yoga. Gwen Lawrence, yoga instructor for the NY Giants and Yankees will lead a master

yoga class, and DJ HyFi, will bring his signature musical style to compliment the event. In addition, classes for yogis of all abilities including explorations of Vinyasa, Kundalini, Classical Integral, Chakra Flow, Acroyoga, Yin, and children’s yoga will be taught outdoors by local instructors. A walk of the grounds to the Woodstock monument and a market with handmade goods and healthy food options will round out the day. With yoga’s proven ability to improve physical and psychological wellbeing, the festival is a fitting addition to Bethel Woods programming, supporting the organization’s mission to positively impact its community. All festivals at Bethel Woods celebrate the region’s beauty and talent by showcasing local artists, farmers, crafters, and creators, while welcoming guests to enjoy the peaceful setting and scenic vistas of the campus.

OUR HISTORIC SITE Each year, thousands of people from across the country and around the world make the pilgrimage to Bethel Woods to visit the site of the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair. The festival was a high water mark in the history of an entire generation, and the historic field where the festival took place still has that indescribable “vibe.” Bethel Woods is proud of this heritage and takes its stewardship of this historic place seriously. In 2014, the museum commissioned a study—a Cultural Landscape Report—to better understand the site’s history, its current condition, and the clues that remain to help us

understand the continuity and change through the years. The report helps to reveal the history that lies within the rolling hills, forest, and fields of the Woodstock festival site. The Woodstock festival was a watershed moment at the end of a decade of extreme cultural change, highs, and lows. Bethel Woods thanks those who recognize the importance of maintaining the historic integrity of this site. By doing so, we help to safeguard our community’s heritage, making it available to future generations for civic enjoyment and educational activities.
