Dear Friends: Welcome to the 10th Anniversary Season at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. We are thrilled you have chosen to celebrate this important milestone with us and we look forward to many more years of inspiring generations through peace, love, and music at our historic site. We are grateful to you—our donors, sponsors, members, and guests, as well as our dedicated team of volunteers and staff—for your ongoing support throughout the past decade. This summer, we are steadfast in our efforts to ensure that each guest is inspired by their experience here. We continue to expand our programming, empower individuals, and educate young people through the arts and humanities. We are collaborating with The New School on our PLAY: Music and PLAY: Theater programs to bring skilled teaching artists to The Conservatory programming. WoodsTalk: Live events present thought-provoking speakers, while our WoodsTalk blog offers a forum for in-depth discussion of important topics or a peek behind the scenes through artist interviews. The Museum continues to provide context and understanding of The Sixties era and its relevance today, and our historic site remains on bucket lists worldwide, as it becomes a touchstone for a new generation. This year’s Special Exhibit, Rights, Race & Revolutions: A Portrait of LIFE in 1960s America by Grey Villet, tells the emotional stories of a past that continues to shape the present. The Pavilion season features acts from near and far—including Motown legend Smokey Robinson, worldwide sensation Pitbull, and homegrown success stories Gavin DeGraw, Andy Grammer, and Aaron Tveit. A new collaboration with the Shandelee Music Festival, PLAY: The Classics, will offer world-class classical performances for all ages, in addition to the wide variety of intimate musical experiences offered in our indoor Event Gallery. While we will be commemorating our 10th anniversary all season long, we hope you’ll join us for A Gathering at Bethel Woods: Celebrating a Decade of Peace, Love & Music on July 2. We invite you return soon to explore all that Bethel Woods has to offer, and ask that you please keep in mind that ticket sales generate only a fraction of the funds necessary to support the not-for-profit work of this organization and maintain this beautiful gathering place for your enjoyment. Your support is critical to the sustainability of our efforts to preserve the historic site of the 1969 Woodstock festival, interpret the social, political, and cultural impacts of the ’60s and their relevance today, and provide access to the arts and humanities in our schools and community. We hope you will consider how you might become more involved in these efforts. Thank you for joining us to enjoy the magic of Bethel Woods and for supporting our efforts to unite diverse audiences through a common love of music and the arts. Cheers to the 10th Anniversary and an encore to many more,

BETHEL WOODS INTRODUCES

Classical music fans of all ages will have a truly unique opportunity to attend a variety of world-class performances over the next year at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. PLAY: THE CLASSICS is a five-part concert series that’s the result of a collaboration between Bethel Woods and Shandelee Music Festival. Through the partnership, the two organizations aim to attract classical music enthusiasts, and reach more young people interested in the arts. “In addition to attracting traditional classical enthusiasts, PLAY: The Classics will have specific emphasis on reaching young adults to introduce a love and appreciation of classical music to new audiences and youth,” says Bethel Woods CEO Darlene Fedun. Among the performers in the series is the CAPRICCI VIOLIN ENSEMBLE, hailing from the Kazakh National Academy of Music, performing “Souvenirs from Kazakhstan.” There will also be “An Evening of Chamber Music” with the HERMITAGE PIANO TRIO, along with an “Embrace” of two pianos combining classical music and jazz, featuring CRISTIANA PEGORARO and DANILO REA.

IF THIS FIELD COULD TALK…

LESSONS FROM THE LAND What do we really know about the place where half a million people converged and Jimi, Richie, Janis, Sly, Carlos, and friends gave the performances of their lives? To find out, The Museum at Bethel Woods commissioned a Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) which studies the physical site before, during, and after Woodstock to better understand the usage, landforms, vegetation, water features, permanent and temporary structures making up the site’s landscape. It provides a guide for viewing the site through time and directing preservation, restoration, and interpretation. The CLR makes recommendations including restoring historic sightlines, identifying key locations, and developing innovative ways to encourage exploration, discovery, and learning.

With funding support from grants and donations, Bethel Woods will embark on initial projects, including field work to locate historic elements, developing hand-held interpretation aids, trail restoration through the Bindy Bazaar woods, opening sightlines at the Woodstock Monument, and ultimately pursuing listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Work has begun on the protection and interpretation of several ‘witness trees’ and developing zones of protection guiding future development. The CLR provides valuable lessons about preserving the hallowed ground and inspiration as to how best to share the story of a little piece of Sullivan County farmland which hosted one of the most significant cultural events in history.
