A LOOK BACK AT 2024
Dear friends of the Colonial,
2024 was a remarkable year for The Colonial Theatre. We proudly brought world-class performing arts and cinema to our stage and screen, engaging over 8,000 visitors in our cherished corner of the North Country. Through cultural conversations and meaningful experiences, we strengthened our role as a hub for community, connection, and culture.
This past year saw not only an incredible lineup of programming but also significant stewardship of our historic building to ensure The Colonial continues to thrive for years to come. Along with our weekly feature films, here are some highlights from 2024:
• World-Class Performers: Our signature Live! @ The Colonial series featured outstanding artists, including Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Deer Tick, Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley, Dulce Sloan, Le Vent du Nord, and Five for Fighting.
• Collaborative Film Series: We partnered with local organizations like the Ammonoosuc Conservation Trust to bring thought-provoking films and conversations about stewarding our natural world.
• Family-Friendly Fun: Our Kids! @ The Colonial series enjoyed its most popular season yet, offering theater, music, puppetry, and more for families all summer long.
• Celebrating Team Members: We created new staff positions and celebrated the retirement of our extraordinary graphic designer (and so much more) of over 20 years, Mary Ellen Russell.
• Volunteer Support: Our dedicated volunteers contributed over 1,000 hours to make everything we do possible.
• Historic Preservation: Capital improvement projects included a new roof, patio renovations, a live sound mixer, and other vital updates to care for our historic building.
• Youth Creativity: The fourth annual White Mountain Cinema Camp saw students write, direct, and produce their original short film, All Figured Out

• Community Partnerships: Collaborations with groups like White Mountain Science Inc. (WMSI), Bike the North Country, Littleton Co-Op, the Bethlehem Sustainability Working Group, and the White Mountain Jewish Film Festival enriched our programming.
• Financial Health: Thanks to successful fundraising efforts, we maintained and enhanced our financial stability and sustainability.
Through these turbulent times, The Colonial remains a place of belonging, fellowship, and connection in our region. With thoughtful, high-quality programming, we continue to embrace diverse perspectives, build empathy, and foster human connection. The Colonial enhances the quality of life in our rural community while deepening our understanding of the world around us.
In this report, you’ll find a glimpse into the moments that made 2024 unforgettable— moments that created lasting memories, strengthened our community, and ensured the preservation of our historic theater.
No matter how you engage with us, you are an essential part of what makes The Colonial Theatre an indispensable forum for arts and culture in the North Country.
Thank you to our members, donors, volunteers, sponsors, partners, staff, and Board of Directors. Your generosity, engagement, and commitment to The Colonial and our community are the reasons we thrive.
Sincerely,

WHO WE ARE
The Colonial Theatre is the home of arts, film, music, and culture in New Hampshire’s North Country. The 300-seat theatre offers state-ofthe-art digital projection and surround sound for independent and world cinema, and hosts Grammy award-winning performing artists and family entertainment from May through October—all without losing the intimate charm of a vintage theatre.
When The Colonial opened its doors in 1915, the era of the Grand Hotels was in full swing, and Bethlehem, New Hampshire was a premier destination resort. Because of its sophisticated clientele it quickly became a venue for studios to test market their films.
The Colonial is one of the oldest continuously operating movie theatres in the United States. With its rich history, The Colonial is one of the few remaining links to the era of the Grand Hotels as well as a significant chapter in the history of the film industry.
The Colonial Theatre is on New Hampshire’s Registry of Historic Places and named “Best Vintage Movie Theatre” by Yankee Magazine.
MISSION
Inspire and invite participation in the cultural conversation.
VISION
A vibrant, engaged, and enriched community through arts and culture.
VALUES
We believe…
• Relevant arts and cultural programming make a positive difference in creating a sense of belonging, fellowship, and community that enriches all;
• Access to different perspectives gives us deeper understanding of the world in which we live and helps us see more clearly what unites us as well as what makes us each unique;
• Responsible stewardship and partnerships enable us to leave a lasting legacy of cultural enrichment.

How long have you been members?
We’ve been members for eight years!
Why did you become members?
Dan grew up going to The Colonial, and Kristina fell in love with The Colonial when visiting Dan. It anchors our community, and we want it to be around forever.
Do you have a favorite event(s) and why?
The old movie re-runs are always really fun: Star Wars, The Big Lebowski, etc. feel like a party to attend! We also love all the Reel Outdoors films.
What do you like best about The Colonial?
The welcoming staff and the organic popcorn with loads of nutritional yeast and real butter... it’s a classic!
Thank you, Dan and Kristina!

Link Your Legacy TO THE COLONIAL THEATRE
Our values, our interests, and our dreams are reflected in what we care about most—our families, our communities, and the organizations we love, such as The Colonial Theatre.
The Colonial’s Legacy Society, our planned giving program, was established with its first bequest in 2009. That unexpected and generous gift created a foundation to assure The Colonial’s long-term financial stability.
Now named the Huntington Legacy Society (in recognition of its initial donor), we encourage members, donors, and other supporters to include The Colonial Theatre in their estate planning. Your foresight and lasting support will allow The Colonial Theatre to continue serving our community for generations to come.

“The house sound and lights were very professionally done. Heck, everything was very professionally done. The theater is a nonprofit, and many (most?) of the people you will see are volunteers. They are truly there because they want to be, and it shows!”

Thank You, Mary Ellen!
After 20+ years of dedicated service to The Colonial, in 2024 we celebrate the retirement of our graphic designer, fabulous bartending volunteer, and creative heartbeat, Mary Ellen Russell.
Mary Ellen’s creativity and ability to balance design and history has touched almost every aspect of The Colonial and helped us put our best foot forward through everything from the incredible sound panels in our auditorium to the beloved monthly event calendars and weekly newsletter emails. Beyond her

exceptional design skills, she has been a wonderful colleague and mentor to many at The Colonial and beyond.
The Colonial is much more than a movie theatre, and Mary Ellen has been so much more than our graphic designer. She helped build The Colonial into the flourishing community organization that it is today, and we are forever grateful for her years of dedication, thoughtfulness, and artistry.
Thank you for everything, Mary Ellen!
