ANNUAL REPORT 2023
BethlehemColonial.org
A LOOK BACK AT 2023 Dear Friends of The Colonial, As we reflect on 2023, we see a year of growth, change, community, and world-class film and performance in the North Country. We are grateful for the over 8,000 people we welcomed through the doors of our historic Theatre as we continue to invite our community together in cultural conversation. 2023 was a phenomenal year of programming where our center for community, connection, and culture was open every day throughout the season. In addition to our weekly selection of feature films, 2023 brought us: • World-class artists in our signature Live! @ The Colonial series, such as Shawn Colvin, Grace Kelly, Shemekia Copeland, Shawn Mullins, Mamselle Ruiz, Mipso, Southern Avenue, Amythyst Kiah, Joan Osborne, and Dar Williams, to name a few; • Partnerships with local organizations for our special film series such as White Mountain Science (WMSI) for Science on Screen, bringing acclaimed scientists and exciting films to the North Country; • Quality family programming featuring theatre, music, puppetry, mayhem and more in the Kids! @ The Colonial series in July and August; • A new House Manager and Executive Director; • Over 1,000 hours of volunteer support; • Capital improvement and conservation projects to care for our historic building; • The third annual class of White Mountain Cinema Camp students who wrote, directed, and produced their original short film Quinn’s Inn; and • Partnerships with community organizations such as Ammonoosuc Conservation Trust, Bike the North Country, Littleton Co-Op, The Loading Dock, and White Mountain Jewish Film Festival. The Colonial brings world class film and performing arts to the North Country, improving the quality of life and sense of belonging, fellowship, and community in our region through connection, conversation, and enriching art. In line with our core values, we strive to foster an environment for accepting different perspectives that gives us deeper understanding of the world in which we live. In the following pages you will see a snapshot of what made the last year memorable, successful, and enriching for our community. No matter how you engage with us, you have helped us to build The Colonial Theatre into an indispensable cultural forum. Thank you to our members, donors, volunteers, sponsors, partners, staff, and Board of Directors. Your generosity, participation, wisdom, and commitment to The Colonial and to our community is the engine that propels us forward.
Sincerely,
Tami Nason Brenna Nicely President, Board of Directors Executive Director

ABOUT US
VALUES We believe… relevant arts and cultural programming make a positive difference in creating a sense of belonging, fellowship, and community that enriches all; access to different perspectives gives us deeper understanding of the world in which we live and helps us see more clearly what unites us as well as what makes us each unique; responsible stewardship and partnerships enable us to leave a lasting legacy of cultural enrichment.
VISION A vibrant, engaged, and enriched community through arts and culture.
MISSION Inspire and invite participation in the cultural conversation.
The Colonial Theatre is the home of arts, film, music and culture in New Hampshire’s North Country. The 300-seat theatre offers state-ofthe-art digital projection and surround sound for independent and world cinema, and hosts Grammy award-winning performing artists and family entertainment from May through October—all without losing the intimate charm of a vintage theatre. When The Colonial opened its doors in 1915, the era of the Grand Hotels was in full swing and Bethlehem, New Hampshire was a premier destination resort. Because of its sophisticated clientele it quickly became a venue for studios to test market their films. The Colonial is one of the oldest continuously operating movie theatre in the United States. With its rich history, The Colonial is one of the few remaining links to the era of the Grand Hotels as well as a significant chapter in the history of the film industry. The Colonial Theatre is on New Hampshire Registry of Historic Places and named “Best Vintage Movie Theatre” by Yankee Magazine.

LINK YOUR LEGACY TO THE COLONIAL THEATRE Our values, our interests, and our dreams are reflected in what we care about most—our families, our communities, and the organizations we love, such as The Colonial Theatre. The Colonial’s Legacy Society, our planned giving program, was established with its first bequest in 2009. That unexpected and generous gift created a foundation to assure The Colonial’s long-term financial stability. Now named the Huntington Legacy Society (in recognition of its initial donor), we encourage members, donors, and other supporters to include The Colonial Theatre in their estate planning. Your foresight and lasting support will allow The Colonial Theatre to continue serving our community for generations to come.
For more information on how to make a planned gift that benefits you, your loved ones, and The Colonial Theatre please call Brenna Nicely, Executive Director, at 603-869-5603 or email bnicely@bethlehemcolonial.org. ★★★★★ “ Good movies and live music in one of the US’ oldest operating movie theaters. The folks who greeted us were so sweet and welcoming. Yummy selection of snacks and drinks plus a separate cafe/seating area if you want to hang out. The kind of theater that every town should have .”

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: PABLO & CATHIE B. FLORES
How long have you been members? Since 2012. Why did you become a members? We joined The Colonial to support the growth and enrichment of our adopted community. The Colonial brings world-class live performances at fantastic prices within walking distance from our home. We also volunteer at The Colonial—Pablo working in the projection room and Cathie in the ticket booth and behind the concessions counter on Thursday evenings.
Do you have a favorite movie or musician? Having lived in New Orleans for 20 years and traveling to music festivals throughout Europe and the US, live music is an important part of our lives. The Colonial Theatre surpasses our expectations. It has enriched our knowledge of music and current events with thoughtprovoking performances such as Letters from Iraq. Being a guitarist himself, Pablo’s favorite events (so far) were Leo Kottke, Bella Fleck & Abigail Washburn, and Pat Metheny performances. Cathie’s favorites include Bombino, Red Baraat, and a screening of the opera Carmen. Asleep at the Wheel (a favorite all-time Texas swing group) was a highlight we enjoyed with five of our closest friends and relatives, and hundreds of “two-steppin” neighbors. The Colonial Theatre is a true gem. What do you like best about The Colonial? The Colonial Theatre is one place in the North Country where we gather as a community and experience joy together. Thank you Cathie & Pablo!
