A Message from the Vice Chancellor

Published by the Office of Development and Public Relations Br. Jack Curran Vice President for Development Ms. Maro Sandrouni (BU ‘80) Director of Public Relations

Dear Friends, I write these words to you as we celebrate the forty days of Easter. Certainly the Easter season heralds the triumph of life over death, light over darkness. We are light for each other. There are so many ways that this happens daily at Bethlehem University - some profound and lifechanging, others brief and simple - all illuminating the shadowed steps of the human journey. There are many stories in this issue of the Bethlehem University News in which individuals and groups of faculty, students, alumni and visitors to the University share their light with each other, increasing the light for us all. CONGRATULATIONS to Archbishop Antonio Franco, Apostolic Delegate to Jerusalem and Palestine, as the new Chancellor of Bethlehem University and to Archbishop Fouad Twal, Coadjutor Archbishop of Jerusalem, as the new President of Bethlehem University. Bethlehem University is most fortunate to have both Archbishop Franco and Archbishop Twal in their respective responsibilities to promote the mission of the University both locally and internationally. IN SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY The alumni of Bethlehem University will soon number close to 10,000 with the graduation of 567 current students on Friday, 16 June 2006. You will read in these pages how several of our graduates have shared their light in business, nursing, education and scientific research. Each of these graduates clearly states how influential Bethlehem University was in shaping their lives of commitment and service to the people of Palestine. STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Bethlehem University is committed to providing a quality education to all, recognizing the unique individuality of each student. Our students with special needs are provided the resources to enable them to pursue their education on a par with their peers. The generosity of many benefactors makes this initiative possible. THANK YOU On behalf of the entire Bethlehem University community I thank each and everyone of you who have been so generous in supporting the educational work here. Hundreds of visitors have been to the campus during this Spring Semester. Many others who read these words regularly support us from afar. Each of you is a light for all here. Yet there is darkness on some of the sunniest days in Bethlehem. The lack of freedom of movement casts a shadow over the normal activity of each day and the Wall surrounding the little town of Bethlehem casts deep shadows in minds and hearts. I really believe and I daily experience that the light of courage and caring, humor and hope on the faces and in the souls of our faculty, staff and students is an indestructible force in the face of the darkness.

Special Needs Twenty-one Bethlehem University students with special needs are provided educational resources to enable them to have opportunities on par with their peers. With the guidance of the Committee for Students with Special Needs, the University Library established a specially equipped Academic Resource Room. Other University facilities have also been modiďŹ ed to provide accessibility for students who use wheel chairs or have other mobility or visual impairments. The Committee for Students with Special Needs, chaired by Ms. Barbara Lavin, Coordinator of the Occupational Therapy Program, assists students and faculty in making education more accessible. This Committee developed from the initiative of Br. Joe Loewenstein, President Emeritus, and his involvement with students who have mobility and visual impairments, many of which resulted from the violence in the region. 9

The generosity of benefactors provides equipment for the Academic Resource Room. Computers with JAWS software enable students access to voiceenabled word processing, email and internet searches. A Braille transcriber and a Braille typewriter enable students to do their academic work in either Arabic or English. A TV monitor with a zoom attachment magnifies printed material for students. While not yet fully equipped, the Resource Room is already serving the needs of students. The University seeks to be able to provide the JAWS software and other equipment to students with special needs for use in their homes to enable them to benefit from these resources beyond the constraints of the Academic Resource Room in the Library. Faculty and student volunteers assist the Library staff with the functioning of the Academic Resource Room by training students to use the equipment and to audio-tape a variety of textbooks and class assignments for students with visual impairments. staff coordinate and monitor exams for students. For students to use the JAWS voice-enabled software to “read” educational materials requires considerable work in preparing the text. Mary Hodali, Secretary for the Occupational Therapy Program, assisted by a third year Occupational Therapy student, Jad Zoughbi (BU ‘07), spend considerable time photocopying, scanning, and reformatting text before electronically transferring it to a floppy disc for students to use with the JAWS software. The Committee for Students with Special Needs and the Academic Resource Room foster a supportive environment for the students with special needs as well as for the faculty and student body in general by helping to break down barriers and challenging stereotypes of persons with disabilities. Shatha Abu Srour (BU ‘07) has a visual impairment and lives in the Aida Refugee Camp in Bethlehem. Her peers describe her as an optimistic, courageous and independent woman. She says

her experience at the University helped to develop her initiative and encouraged her to be a self-reliant person and leader. Shatha is a Sociology major and one of the University Student Ambassadors who volunteers to dedicate some of their time to greeting visitors to the University. An accident at the age of 11 resulted in Awad Abaiyat (BU ‘05) losing his sight and one of his arms. Graduating from high school, Awad knew his dream of pursuing higher education would come true only if he could attend Bethlehem University where people like him have the same chances for an education and involvement in student life as other students. Awad successfully graduated from Bethlehem University in 2005 with a major in Arabic Literature and minor in Psychology. He is currently the Deputy Director of the Union of People with Special Needs in Beit Sahour. His objective is to continue being an advocate for and to assist physically impaired people by enforcing policies that reduce their marginalization in society.

Ola Abu Al Ghaib (BU ‘96) was born in Nablus, north of Palestine. At the age of twelve she had to deal with a dramatic change in her life and accept a permanent disability. With Deep Appreciation for Generous Hearts and Personal Commitments Palestinian in The Diaspora Generously Supporting Future Generations

Michael S. (Mike) Ladah, born in Jaffa when Palestine was ruled by the British, became a refugee at the age of seven. The Ladah Foundation, having grown out of the life experience and commitments of Mike, wife Hilda (an Armenian whose parents were survivors of the Armenian Genocide) and their three children, was formed in 1999 as a USA-based non-profit, tax-exempt charitable organization whose primary objective is to provide charitable support and scholarship assistance to needy and deserving students, primarily in Palestine. Since 2001, the Ladah Foundation has awarded annual scholarship grants to Bethlehem University students and in 2005 the Foundation made a pledge to establish within two years its first $25,000 endowed scholarship at Bethlehem University with the support of Mike’s Aramco colleagues. With this endowed scholarship, the Ladah Foundation is significantly strengthening Bethlehem University. These funds will provide a scholarship to a needy and deserving student in perpetuity.

Anglican Medical Missionaries Inspire Bethlehem University Students

Having visited Bethlehem University on a number of occasions with the Living Stones Association, Ms. Hilary Shaw of the UK included the University in her prayer and peace actions. Infused with the values of her parents who both were Anglican medical missionaries in India and Pakistan, when she was recently bequeathed with some funds from the successful mining engineering career of her Uncle, Hilary decided to become a benefactor to Bethlehem University by establishing the Summerhayes Endowed Scholarship to support nursing students (with a preference for midwifery and neonatal students). As Ms. Shaw’s gift to the University was made through the UK registered charity Friends of Bethlehem University, gift aid brings this endowed scholarship to $38,000.

Love of People Generates Generosity in Perpetuity

The generous lives of love and service of the late Cardinal Hume and Cardinal de Furstenberg inspired many while they lived – and continue to inspire many thanks to the Friends of Bethlehem University (FoBU) in the UK. FoBU has successfully established Bethlehem University’s first ever Endowed Faculty Chair with funds it is confidentially anticipating will total US $1,000,000.00 by September 2006. Thanks to the energy and vision of Msgr. Vladimir Felzmann, Robert Benson, with many others, FoBU was established as a registered charity in the UK, in September 1999. Acknowledgement is also due in considerable measure to Brother Daniel Casey and his predecessor, Brother Vincent Malham, who have been exceptionally helpful in assisting FoBU to make such great progress towards this most significant goal of a one million dollar endowment to establish the Cardinal Hume and Cardinal de Furstenberg Endowed Chair in Religious Studies. The funds generated from the investment of this Endowed Chair will support in perpetuity for the Religious Studies Department’s outreach programs, provide upgrading courses for the Teachers of Religion in local primary and secondary schools, and support the teaching of Religion at the University as well as an annual lecture series.
