THE MORE THINGS CHANGE... BY RABBI CHAI POSNER
2022 Spring Events Calendar The Operative Word by Dan Silien Meet Our Grandparent Ambassadors!
A Change is Going to Come By Neil Sweren, Board Chair Twenty plus years ago my wife Sherri and I made the decision to send our kids, Rachel ‘13 and Ryan ’17, to Beth Tfiloh because we wanted to give them a better Jewish education than what we had growing up. We got exactly what we hoped for — a warm and welcoming school that provided our kids with a great Judaic and secular education; and a school that would teach them, if we allowed, to think and advocate for themselves. But we got so much more than that; we also got a warm, welcoming shul community that accepted us at every stage of our Jewish journey (we didn’t even know we were on a journey!); and a community that challenged us and provided opportunities for growth and social interaction. Twenty years ago, we could not possibly have known or imagined the profound change sending our kids to BT would have on nearly every aspect of our lives today. Why am I telling you this? Because many of you have expressed concern over “THE CHANGES” — the transition to new leadership among our clergy and congregational staff; who is leaving, who is coming, what used to be and what will be. Believe me, I know — change is difficult and sometimes uncomfortable. I once heard that one of the most common questions elite athletes are asked leading up to a competition is, “Are you nervous?” People ask them that because they would be nervous in that situation. Do you know what the athletes most common response is? “No, I’m excited!” Why the difference? Because the observer doesn’t know what has been going on behind the scenes for years, or possibly a lifetime, to prepare for that moment. The athlete is keenly aware as they have been doing the work. They are excited that the moment has come and they believe they are ready. Behind the scenes at Beth Tfiloh our incredibly talented and dedicated clergy, staff and lay leadership work tirelessly, as they always have, to ensure BT not only survives but also thrives for its next 100 years. So that today’s young families can have the same incredible experience my family has had. So that ALL of our members feel included and part of our incredible kehilah. You can read more about these changes in Rabbi Posner’s article, “The More Things Change,” on page 4. So you ask, are we nervous? No, we’re excited!

The More Things They say, “The more things change, the more they remain the same.” I’m not sure if that’s true or not, but I can tell you that especially this year at Beth Tfiloh, both individual parts of the statement resonate. There is a lot changing, and there is also a lot remaining the same.
What’s changing? n

Cherie will be honored as part of our Centennial Evening of Celebration. That’s a lot of change. Each one of these individuals has impacted the Beth Tfiloh community in immeasurable ways. They have been at the core of the day-to-day operations at Beth Tfiloh – religiously, programmatically, administratively – for so long. I can certainly tell you that on a personal level they have been mentors and friends to me for my entire rabbinate. So, I share in the bittersweetness of them moving on to the next stages of their lives. I’m confident all will remain connected to Beth Tfiloh, as this is their home. I feel fortunate to have worked with all of them, which uniquely positions me as a bridge to Beth Tfiloh’s future. Which brings me to the question…
What’s remaining the same? The answer: Beth Tfiloh! This past Rosh Hashanah I spoke about the need for us to be authentic, relevant and inspiring. Those three pillars will guide the work that we do as we move into the next 100 years. Beth Tfiloh will continue to be the very same warm, joyful, welcoming, non-judgmental, Modern Orthodox congregation that we have always been. We’ve thrived throughout our history because we have never hesitated to adapt to the changing world around us, and the coming months and years will be no different. To that end, here is a peek at some of the exciting work that we are doing right now!
Religious Services/Prayer We are in the very beginning stages of two processes that will have a major impact on the future of our Shabbat and holiday morning services. As we think about the future of Beth Tfiloh, our goal is to create a davening experience that is authentic, relevant and inspiring. In the next months we will begin working on a search for our next chazzan. This

Change... process will be very transparent and we expect to have many high-quality candidates who will audition for us on Shabbatot. The ideal candidate will be someone who inspires communal singing and participation, and will also work with our school choirs to create connection and a culture of music throughout the Beth Tfiloh community. Through this process, we will learn a lot about ourselves and the type of services we find meaningful. I hope that you will join us when our candidates visit so you can participate in this exciting process. After all, it’s been over 26 years since we looked for a chazzan, and we did pretty good with that search the last time! While we all love our beautiful and majestic sanctuary, there is also a desire for a more intimate sense of connection and inspiration. It is difficult to achieve this type of warm energy in such a huge expansive space. We have begun an architectural process to plan renovations to the Dahan Sanctuary that will enhance it as a more intimate house of prayer (Beth Tfiloh!). In this way, the physical space will mirror the style of davening that we want to achieve.
Programming With deep gratitude to Irene and Robert Russel for their incredibly generous gift to the centennial campaign, this summer/fall we will open a new programming center at Beth Tfiloh. The center will bring all of our programming under one roof, which will allow us to provide you and your family with more innovative and thoughtful events and programming. This will include a physical renovation of the Tuvin Library, creating a more intimate and modern environment that is conducive to group study and conversation. Talia Jordan, who began working for us as our director of programming and engagement this past September, will be at the helm of the center. You should expect to see a whole new slate of authentic, relevant, and inspiring programs in the months ahead. In addition to our superb formal adult educational classes which will continue to be produced through Mercaz, there will be numerous informal opportunities to learn, grow and connect with each other and with our rich tradition.

Staffing, Systems and Administration While not as exciting as the religious services and programming items, a third area we are retooling is how we work behind the scenes. Dan Silien shares more about this in his column. Dan’s professionalism and wisdom have already made him a valuable partner since coming on board a few months ago. He is working on numerous projects and systems to help us become more responsive, customer friendly, and streamlined so that we can continue to do all of the great things that we do. It was Shlomo Hamelech, King Solomon, who said in Megillat Kohelet (Ecclesiastes), “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” As Beth Tfiloh goes through this exciting time of transition, we would do well to remember this wisdom of King Solomon. We’ve been here before and we’ll be here again. Numerous times throughout our history we’ve undergone changes, and yet we have thrived by remaining true to who we are. It is a distinct honor to be your rabbi as we move into the next 100 years… I certainly hope that you are as excited as I am! BETH TFILOH BULLETIN

THE OPERATIVE WORD
by Dan Silien, Director of Shul Operations
“To infinity, and beyond…” While for many, this saying immediately conjures images of Buzz Lightyear, Woody, and the entire Toy Story crew, for me it perfectly encapsulates how I feel starting 2022 at Beth Tfiloh. To mix metaphors, we have rounded the corner of this new calendar year, and we are now poised to take the best of what has come before and combine it with all of the energy and excitement that accompanies BT’s transition to leadership under our new senior rabbi. Rabbi Wohlberg and the entire staff put BT in a place where we can say we are the premier Modern Orthodox shul in the country. The transition to Rabbi Posner as senior rabbi, and the implementation of his vision, will ensure BT remains that leader for years to come. What does this leadership position mean for the operations of Beth Tfiloh? As your DSO, it means working with my programming team, under the direction of Talia Jordan, to make sure we are providing inspiring, authentic, and relevant programming. Perhaps more importantly, it means rethinking what a successful program means. The best programs are not necessarily those with the highest attendance or the most “buzz,” but rather those where the participants come away feeling engaged, connected, and more excited about being a part of the BT community than before. This is why a major focus of our programming (and frankly, overall efforts) in the coming year will be focused on helping anyone who wants to feel more a part of the BT family, do so. Perhaps counterintuitively, engagement also does
12 BETH TFILOH BULLETIN
not mean making sure every member comes to as many programs as possible. Someone can be highly engaged through attendance at a single program, deepening their relationship to the BT community, while someone who attends many programs feels little connection at all. Engagement is about quality, not quantity. Engagement and excellence are equally important for our lay leaders. Together, we have already begun restructuring how our board meetings run, both to increase meaningful participation and to allow BT to benefit from the amazing talent pool we have within our midst. Lay leaders are key to ensuring a bright future for BT, and Rabbi Posner and I are committed to continuing to develop and maximize the potential of those who are moved to serve. Being a premier institution also means that our staff is committed to providing top notch customer service. To make sure this happens, as Rabbi Posner mentioned in his column, we need to ensure that our staff and our systems are designed to meet our current and future needs, and that we are efficient, friendly, and responsive in all that we do. We are looking at the tools we use, the processes that are in place, and both the internal communication and member communication that does (and should) exist. This will be a journey, and one that may take some time. I am committed to working with your BT staff to make this shul the best it can be. As always, I welcome your thoughts and value your perspectives. Getting better means admitting some things can (and should) be improved. Stay with us as we move forward on our journey to infinity… and beyond!

Since graduating from BT in 2013, I earned a degree in criminal justice and criminology from the University of Maryland and worked as a paralegal. I have also been a firefighter/EMT for 10 years, and currently work with the Chestnut Ridge Volunteer Fire Company. Beth Tfiloh has always been a special place for me. I am excited to help keep our alumni, school parents, and grandparents connected to our BT community and each other, while also supporting our Annual Campaign and Spotlight fundraising efforts, among other Development tasks. What better time to come back to BT than during our Centennial Year! I am truly excited to be back at BT and I look forward to seeing many familiar faces along the way! Please feel free to reach out at 410-413-2350 or jsless@btfiloh.org.

MEET OUR SCHOOL GRANDPARENT AMBASSADOR CHAIRS Beth Sellman I am excited to co-chair our Grandparent Ambassador Group alongside Nurite Notarius-Rosin. As a grandparent of two BT students, ages 6 and 4, I feel an even stronger need for Jewish educational continuity more than ever before. Our connection to Beth Tfiloh School goes back many years – our three daughters attended BT and two are “lifers!” Soon
after our oldest, Allison, started in BT PreSchool in 1989, we became Beth Tfiloh Congregants. Beth Tfiloh continues to lay the foundation for a stellar, well-rounded secular and Jewish studies program that cannot be found elsewhere. I am proud to help support my grandchildren and yours — our future leaders — in receiving this priceless education and strengthening their strong Jewish identities, which is imperative in this day and age! Nurite Notarius-Rosin I’m delighted to co-chair this year’s Grandparent Ambassador Group with Beth Sellman. Our family’s connection to Jewish day school education in general and Beth Tfiloh in particular spans decades. So we are thrilled that among our 11 grandchildren who are of age, all attend Jewish day schools in their respective

communities. When our son and daughterin-law, Hinda and Jacob Rosin, chose Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School for their children, we were elated. The Jewish and secular education they are receiving is exemplary. Like you, we are beyond grateful to the talented teachers and professionals who give our grandchildren the tools to develop into proud, caring, knowledgeable Jews who will become our community’s future leaders. The partnership of educators, parents and grandparents is vital in fostering BT’s continued success. Whether you live in Baltimore or out of the area, I hope that you will take an active role in the Grandparents Ambassador Group. Together we can ensure that the BT community remains vibrant for years to come.
