RABBI’S CORNER I Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere! Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg

BETH TFILOH ‫בית תפלה‬

It’s somewhat hard to believe, but this is the last Bulletin message I write to you as the senior rabbi of the Beth Tfiloh Congregation. Having said that, I also must tell you: this is not a farewell address. I ain’t goin’ nowhere! Beginning January 1, 2022, and for the next four years, I will serve as Beth Tfiloh’s rabbi-in-residence. What does that mean? On a regular basis, I will continue to deliver sermons on Shabbat, holidays and the High Holy Days as well. I will teach classes and participate and officiate at lifecycle events. Beginning January 1st, Rabbi Posner will be your rabbi — our rabbi. Beth Tfiloh has a most promising future in his capable hands. I will do everything possible to help Rabbi Posner fulfill his mission – our mission – the Beth Tfiloh mission.

If this be the case, then why am I giving up the position of senior rabbi? Perhaps the best reason is reflected in a story that is told of Rabbi Sampson Raphael Hirsch, the intellectual giant behind the founding of contemporary Orthodox Judaism. It is said that late in his life, the old rabbi surprised his students by scheduling himself a long trip to Switzerland. When they inquired about why he insisted on making such a journey, he replied: “Soon, I will stand before the Almighty. I will be held answerable to many questions. But, what will I say when I am asked, ‘Shimson, my son, it is true you did many mitzvot, but did you also remember to see My Alps?’”

Being your rabbi, for all practical purposes, has been more than a full-time job. It’s been my full-time life! I love it! But there are places I would like to visit, books I would like to read, and interests I would like to pursue that there just hasn’t been time for. Most of all, I would just like to have time to relax and be with my family. How could I live any place but in Baltimore where my whole family – children and grandchildren – live? And all of you, too, have become part of my family. This Bulletin features stories reflecting on multi-generational families here at Beth Tfiloh. I have been with so many of you in times of joy, and in times of sorrow. I have felt your pain and rejoiced in your simchas. All that, and so much more, makes Beth Tfiloh the unique institution that it is. WE ARE FAMILY! “I ain’t goin nowhere!”

BETH TFILOH A Legacy of Connection and Commitment

Several Beth Tfiloh Congregation members recently reflected on their Beth Tfiloh connections in a centennial year questionnaire. Community, inclusivity, diversity, warmth, acceptance, friendliness, camaraderie – these were all common refrains, an experience shared by Jews who differ in their observance, but are united by their connection to Beth Tfiloh. BT is truly a house of prayer for all people. “I feel like it’s home... it’s lovely to go ‘where everybody knows your name’,” said June Karlin, a long-time Beth Tfiloh Congregation member, day school and camp mother in her response to a questionnaire about her family’s connection to Beth Tfiloh. That’s BT – much like the long-running sitcom Cheers, the Beth Tfiloh cast of characters spans diverse backgrounds and offers a warm welcome for all who enter. “We have families that have been part of BT since its founding, and families that have joined us over the past decade or so,” noted Rabbi Chai Posner. “They all share a desire to be part of our special BT community. We have a rich history of deep connections and commitment to present and future.”

BETH TFILOH BULLETIN

Senator Ben Cardin and his wife Myrna enjoy a sneak preview of the Centennial Timeline.

The Cardin Family Senator Ben Cardin reflected on his family’s deep BT roots to all those present before the Neilah service on Yom Kippur. “Thanks to our family elders (our grandparents and parents), our values are deeply rooted in our Jewish heritage nurtured here at Beth Tfiloh,” he shared. “My family have been members of BT for about 80 years. Certainly, each generation has different memories. I remember going to socials and playing sports in the shul gym. I also remember the principal Eric Levy. Even though my father was a ‘macher,’ I got no relief from his wrath. I’m sure I deserved it!”

Senator Cardin reminisced about family milestones – engagements, weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs — and Israel trips all shared with their BT family. He shared that his great niece and great nephews graduated from BT, and looked forward to his granddaughter Julia’s graduation this coming June. “One hundred years…. and as we celebrate and transition to the leadership of Rabbi Posner we know we are in good hands. We can all be proud of the great foundation we have built at BT during the past 100 years and know that future generations at BT will create their own special memories in the years to come.”

The Carliner-Penn Family Ruthie Carliner tells about her family’s Beth Tfiloh connection, which began with her great-grandparents Morris and Thresa Segall. “As founders of BT, they received a large silver key to BT on Garrison Boulevard. Always cherished, the key was passed to my grandmother, Sara Segall Penn. Then to my father, Stanley Penn. And now back to Beth Tfiloh.” Today, that key is preserved in the recently unveiled Centennial Timeline. The timeline, a museum-quality exhibit that provides a comprehensive overview of Beth Tfiloh’s history, fills the corridor between the Tuvin and Hurwitz Halls. “Beth Tfiloh and its values have been central to the lives of my entire family,” added Ruthie. “BT memories for me began when I would attend the Sunday morning breakfast and lecture with Rabbi Rosenblatt, my father, and my grandfathers. All of my grandparents attended BT. All major family lifecycle events were, and continue to take place, at BT, to include my grandson Stanley’s bris on the bimah during Passover.” Several generations of Penns have been educated at BT. Ruthie graduated from BT Hebrew School. She and her husband, David, have three children — Leah Stromberg ’04, Joe ’05 and Beth ’08 — who all graduated from the day school.

The Carliner-Penn Family

Joe and his wife Angelica (Sabintsev) ’07, are expanding the family’s BT connections, with their children Stanley ’32, Sarina ’34 and Louis ’37 attending the day school as well. “After the abrupt halt to BT life during Covid, it is wonderful to be back at shul, with people I have gotten to know and are now my good friends,” said Ruthie. “It is important to know that BT is a place that I can always count on to guide me and my family.”

The Levinoff Family The Levinoffs moved to Baltimore in 2008. Heather, a Montgomery County native, and Aaron, who hails from Toronto, did

not have much of a connection with the Baltimore Jewish community when they arrived. Then, they discovered Beth Tfiloh. “We learned about BT as we were looking for preschools for our oldest child, David,” said Heather. The Levinoffs lived in the same neighborhood as several BT teachers who spoke often of the family community at BT. “We toured at a number of schools but what stood out to us about BT was the genuine warmth of the teachers and administration.” “It was obvious from the beginning that attending BT was not just attending a preschool but joining a community,” commented Aaron. “The fact that there were teachers that were alumni of the school, teachers whose children attended BT, and so many students and family members who belonged to the shul showed such a commitment and investment to BT that we knew it was the place for us.” The Levinoffs were drawn to Beth Tfiloh Congregation through the kids’ Shabbat and holiday services. Petting zoos and gingerbread sukkah building were powerful attractions. “Once they knew there was a potential for candy, we began attending BT every Shabbat,” Aaron laughed. Beth Tfiloh gave the Levinoffs more than a synagogue to belong to. It gave them a community whose values reflect their own. “It truly rounds out our children’s Jewish learning and experience to see so many continued on p. 8

Hard work and loyalty are a gift that not everyone possesses, but Larry has it. He is unique, and his work ethic is unmatched. He does it all. But most importantly, his love for everyone who has walked through (or driven through on his buses) is clearly evident, and we are all forever indebted to him. THE OPERATIVE WORD Dan Silien, Director of Shul Operations In what I hope to be the first of many communications to you in this space, I want to reintroduce myself as well as reflect on my first three months with BT. It is incredible how quickly this time has flown by! My time here started almost on Day 1 with our High Holy Days celebrations. While Covid prevented some from gathering at this time of year, the heart and soul of the community were readily apparent. I was thrilled not only to have a chance to meet some of you in person, but also to see the joy of being able to come together to pray, reflect, and gather for this holiday period. It was a milestone in our ability to come together again.

BETH TFILOH: A Legacy of Connection and Commitment continued from page 5

of their friends, the BT teachers and staff participating in shul and being active members of a strong Jewish community. Our children are blessed to not only learn Jewish values as students at BT, but also because those around them so notably teach by example.” Through their preschool connection, the Levinoffs built relationships with other families and to the shul clergy – while hanging out in the PreSchool lobby before school started, through their participation in various committees and boards, and attending synagogue services. Not long after joining Beth Tfiloh shul, their youngest daughter, Rebecca, was born. They hosted the baby naming at their house, and were thrilled that all the BT clergy members made a point to share in the celebration.

In addition, these High Holy Days provided an amazing glimpse into who and what this community is all about. I saw people renewing friendships, experiencing moments of spiritual connection, enjoying walking through the halls of BT again, and overall coming together as a single — but diverse — community! I also want to make note of something which should not be taken for granted (and I admit to being a little biased) – BT is incredibly fortunate to have an amazing staff in place that worked tirelessly to make the High Holy Days special and meaningful to our community.

“While he was speaking, Rabbi Wohlberg wanted to recognize that it was David’s birthday the day before and came with lollipops for our older children. While he was talking, our 2 year-old daughter came up to him and asked for a candy as well. Without missing a beat, he reached into his suit pocket and pulled out… a bagel for her,” shared Heather. “The clergy and staff of BT care about their congregants, students and parents – for many this is more than just a job and we are grateful to be part of the BT community.”

Speaking of hard working staff, we are busy planning many centennial events to celebrate this incredible milestone! The rich history of this community has a chance to shine this year, and I encourage you to join us at one or more of our events. If you have not already seen it, please come spend some time looking at our newly unveiled Centennial Timeline! Maybe you will see some familiar faces, and maybe you will discover something new about BT. I am also excited to share that the Sanctuary Design Competition moved into the presentation phase over the past several weeks. Presentations from the five architectural firm finalists were delivered. The conceptual designs that were shared were diverse and creative. In the coming months, Synagogue leadership will determine if and when to move forward with any of the potential enhancements.

“As parents, we love the dedication to immersing our children in Jewish traditions, culture and learning in a fun way that keeps them engaged and enthusiastic about attending and participating in shul,” said Heather. “BT has given a lot to our family and we are more than happy to give our time back to BT.”

I have spent significant time after the holidays getting to learn more about the BT staff and community. There is much to learn, and much I hope to contribute to helping BT be the best it can be, and I want to hear from you and get to know you. Please let me know if you experience issues, have suggestions, or just want to talk. That said, I do ask for your patience as well. I am meeting and hearing from many new people at the same time. Change of any kind can take time, and may cause a few unintended bumps in the road. Everyone on staff wants only the best for this amazing institution, so bear with us as we continue to make improvements together. Some changes will work amazingly well as soon as they are implemented, and some ideas may turn out to require further tweaking. I hope to use this space in the future to inform you about interesting things taking place at BT, introduce (or reintroduce) you to members of the staff, highlight a particular topic, or respond to your questions. If you have other ideas for something you would like to see me discuss here, please let me know!

Added Aaron, “BT has so much to offer beyond the incredible school experience that our children have received thus far. There are incredible and impactful programs and opportunities to learn and develop relationships, and our hope is that many other young families can get to experience BT as we have, which will allow BT to remain strong for many, many years.”
