Summer Fun! School is over, camp has started, pools are open, and sun is being enjoyed (for at least two days before we all say it’s too hot!). Yes, summer is definitely here. For some, summer means a time of rest and catching up after a long school year. For others, it’s about spending time with family, either at home or on a family vacation. At Beth Tfiloh, it’s yet another transition period for our staff and our planning. This summer means saying goodbye to two long-time staff members – Eve Kresin Steinberg and Cherie Brownstein. Much was said about these two amazing people during our Centennial Celebration, but it bears repeating just how much Eve and Cherie have meant to this institution over the past years. They have created quite a legacy and will be missed. That said, we know that both of them will still be around, and we are excited to see them start a new chapter of their lives. Believe it or not, summer also means the start of our High Holiday planning (ok, we actually started that in May, but who’s counting?). We are excited to see as many of you as possible and look forward to welcoming you to High Holidays filled with meaning, opportunities for introspection, and inspiration. Keep an eye on your mailbox and inbox for complete High Holiday details. We are also spending this summer putting plans in place for our upcoming year of Bar/Bat Mitzvah programming (stay tuned if your family is about to enter that cycle). Construction on our new

program center is getting underway (thank you again to the Russel family!), with more details (and the official name) coming this fall. We are lining up our program calendar, trying to ensure there will be something of interest for every one of our members! This summer also marks the last issue of our Bulletin in its current format. Starting this fall, you can expect to see more substantive columns, with articles from many more of our clergy and staff. This should include more on programming and engagement, features about some of our donors as well as gifting opportunities, profiles of new members, divrei Torah from our clergy, pictures from our events, and more! One feature we want to mention now is the start of an “Ask the Clergy” column. Each issue will feature several questions from our members posed to our clergy, along with answers to these burning questions. We encourage each of you to submit your questions to AskTheClergy@btfiloh.org. Note that this is NOT a private email address, and you should not send anything too personal to it. That said, the questions can be from you, your children, or even your grandchildren! They can be questions you have always wanted to know but hesitated to ask, questions about practice or prayer or holidays, questions about history or tradition, or even questions about something a little silly. We hope you will let us print your name, but you can also indicate that you prefer the question remain anonymous. Please note that not all questions will be answered, but we can’t wait to hear from you! Stay cool, and enjoy the summer.

The Beth Tfiloh

CENTENNIAL CAMPAIGN

INVESTING IN OUR LEGACY. INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE. Last fall, Beth Tfiloh embarked on a $21,000,000 capital and endowment Centennial Campaign, designed to secure and sustain Beth Tfiloh for you, your children, and your children’s children. The primary goal of the Centennial Campaign is to address the most pressing needs of our Congregation and School, allowing our BT community to continue fulfilling its mission of embracing and nurturing a diverse cross-section of Jews. “I have always said that one of the greatest secrets of Beth Tfiloh’s success has been our ability to raise money to fund our mission, to say yes to an innovative program or new subject area for our school,” said Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg. “As I was preparing for my retirement this past year, my priority was to ensure that Beth Tifloh will continue to have the resources we need to continue flourishing for the next 100 years.”

STRENGTHENING BETH TFILOH CONGREGATION “Our world is changing, synagogue life is changing, and Beth Tfiloh must adapt and stay relevant so we can continue to be an anchor in the Baltimore Jewish community and a place that so many people call home,” said Rabbi Chai Posner. To do so,

the Centennial Campaign addresses three priority areas for our shul: our home, by improving our physical space to provide a warmer and more welcoming experience; our programs, by strengthening and enhancing the way in which we engage and inspire our members; and our sustainability, by deepening our

“While sitting shiva for my father, I found myself being adopted and accepted by the Beth Tfiloh community in a way that reminded me of the way my parents accepted people. Everyone was glad to see me, everyone just accepted me. I truly felt cared for, which made me really want to give back. My family has supported the kiddush fund and the whole point of that, for me, was to recreate what Friday night dinner felt like at my parents’ house – being cared for, fed, and schmoozing with your friends and family.” – Ricka Neuman

“Beth Tfiloh has always been a part of our family. My mother grew up going to Beth Tfiloh and attended the Hebrew school there. After losing her husband at 33 years old, BT helped my mom to carry on the plans they’d had for their three children to have strong Jewish roots here. My sisters and I have had our lifecycle events here, we came to shul, attended and graduated Hebrew school. Rabbi Wohlberg officiated Scott’s and my wedding. We feel like we always want to be part of Beth Tfiloh, and for it to be around for future generations of our family. There’s no better place to invest in the future.” – Emily Levin commitment to growing our community and making BT accessible to all those who want to be a part of it. “Through this campaign we have established a special center generously dedicated by Irene and Robert Russel and family to serve as the hub for all programming and engagement at Beth Tfiloh,” said Rabbi Posner. “The new center will include a renovated space for programs as well as a significant endowment fund that will help us to transform how we approach programming and community engagement for our unique, religiously and demographically diverse community.” Of course, Beth Tfiloh services and synagogue membership will always be accessible to anyone who wants them.

“The new endowment will help ensure that Beth Tfiloh can sustain its tailored approach to membership and dues fees, and continue to welcome as many as possible to our community,” said Rabbi Posner. STRENGTHENING BETH TFILOH DAHAN COMMUNITY SCHOOL Our school is a pipeline for future Jewish leaders, providing students with a strong education grounded in Jewish tradition and identity. To ensure our school continues to remain a competitive option for Jewish families, we must invest in the core of BT—our faculty, our students, and our facilities. Doing so will sustain our school’s rigor and programming, enhance our ability to recruit and retain students, and ensure BT remains affordable for all families by removing the need to burden our community with additional tuition costs. “I am so proud of all of Beth Tfiloh’s children, my children – I am proud of their

intellectual pursuits, their love of Israel, and the deep Jewish identity that I see them integrating into their adult lives,” said Beth Tfiloh Director of Education Dr. Zipora Schorr. “The Centennial Campaign is an opportunity to invest in the very essence of our school and all that makes it special.” The Centennial Campaign focuses on three priority areas in the school: our teachers, by increasing compensation and benefits to attract and retain our talent; our students, by enhancing academic and emotional support to meet students’ needs; and our facilities, to better reflect and promote our purpose. This significant investment will ensure that Beth Tfiloh can continue to provide its unique educational experience for many years to come. “This new endowment fund provides enhanced compensation and professional development opportunities that will help us to attract, reward, and retain the best faculty for our students,” said Dr. Schorr. These enhancements position Beth Tfiloh as an employer where teachers can see having a long and fulfilling career while still having their financial needs comfortably met.

We designated our Centennial Campaign gift to benefit two funds: one to help people who can’t afford membership dues, especially younger families who are struggling, so they also can be part of the Beth Tfiloh family. The other is a fund that will allow the school to provide additional resources to students who need more help with reading, math, or just adjusting to school. Debbi and I made these gifts because we believe very firmly both in BT’s mission and the way BT carries out its mission.” – Louis A. Baer BETH TFILOH BULLETIN

Centennial Campaign Honor Roll Beth Tfiloh’s faculty are deeply committed to meeting each child where he or she is, academically, socially and emotionally. “We never want to turn a student away because we are not able to meet their needs for educational support, or educational enrichment,” said Dr. Schorr. “As part of this campaign, we also have established an endowment fund that will allow us to enhance and expand our support offerings – both academic support and social-emotional support. The school’s physical facility needs to continue reflecting our outstanding program and the excellence of our school. Several projects, including an enhanced Lower Field, a new gym, a renovated Upper School Library and a refreshed PreSchool are on the horizon to dramatically enhance and modernize our school environment. MAKE YOUR MARK ON BT “Rabbi Wohlberg, Dr. Schorr and Rabbi Posner have devoted themselves wholeheartedly to Beth Tfiloh’s mission,” said Centennial Campaign Chair Linda Hurwitz. “Beth Tfiloh is so very fortunate to be led by such committed and dynamic clergy and educational leadership.” “It has been a true honor to bring the Centennial Campaign to life together with Campaign ViceChairs Becky Brenner and Anna Klein, and with our phenomenal Centennial Campaign committee,” said Linda. “We met personally with more than 50 Beth Tfiloh families who responded in extraordinarily generous ways. We are thrilled to share that we have raised $24.5 million dollars towards our $25 million goal.” You can make your mark on the Beth Tfiloh community’s extraordinary future, by helping us raise the final $500,000 of our $25 million goal. Your gift, at any level, helps ensure that BT remains a strong and vital lifeline to the local, national, and global Jewish community in perpetuity. You can participate in Beth Tfiloh’s Centennial Campaign by calling (410) 413-2399 or visiting bethtfiloh.com/ centennialcampaign. You can also make your mark on BT by participating in the Community Mosaic project. Work collaboratively with other Beth Tfiloh community members to piece together a commemorative mosaic, creating a beautiful work of art for the outside wall of the Epstein Chapel. This mosaic, together with the museum-quality Centennial Timeline, will provide us with lasting symbols to mark this monumental occasion for our BT family. Stay tuned for details on how to participate in the Community Mosaic.

Reflections on Moldova: “Do Not Forget These People” By Rabbi Chai Posner Recently, Rabbi Chai Posner led a trip to Moldova along with eight other Beth Tfiloh community members. The group spent two and a half days with IsraAID, an incredible Israeli organization which goes all over the world bringing disaster relief in times of crisis. Though many groups have been going to Poland, IsraAID chose to work in Moldova, Ukraine’s smallest and poorest neighboring country, because they found a great need for help, especially at the border. He shares some reflections from the trip here.

T

he two-and-a-half-hour drive back to Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, gave me plenty of time to talk to Ethan Schwartz, the communications and marketing director for IsraAID. We were returning from Palanca, a small village at the easternmost part of Moldova. We had just visited the border crossing from Ukraine into Moldova there and seen the tent that IsraAid set up with toys for kids and charging stations for their moms. I asked Ethan many questions, and he patiently took the time to answer all of them in his softspoken and thoughtful manner. This time I asked him what he thought was the most important message for us to bring back to Baltimore. He didn’t hesitate with his answer.

IsraAID doesn’t just drop into disaster areas and then leave. Instead, they work with the local population, to bring Israeli knowhow to people when they need it most. Over the course of two and a half days, the eight other members of our Beth Tfiloh delegation, and I, saw the work IsraAID does, and the people their work is helping. Moldova is the smallest and poorest country in Europe, but they have welcomed the fleeing Ukranian people with open arms. More than 400,000 Ukrainians have come into Moldova, and 80% of them stayed in people’s private homes. They have taken in the most Ukrainian refugees per capita, of any country. Children’s

“Tell them not to forget about these people. Even if the war were to end today, the lives of the people it has affected will take years to rebuild. And they will continue to need our support, even after the news cameras leave.” Ethan went on to explain to me that IsraAid was making plans to stay in Moldova for three to five years. In the years ahead, they would continue to train, support, and equip the Moldovan people and the Ukrainian refugees they had taken in with the tools needed to overcome the trauma they all experienced. From health and medical aid to clean water and hygiene, from educational centers to mental health and psychological support, The speaker runs a safe place for Ukrainian and Moldovan kids for 12 hours a day.

educational and recreational centers have opened their doors. Teachers are working double shifts. Local residents have donated, collected and distributed food, supplies, clothing and shoes. The kindness of these people is inspirational. One woman told us that the Israelis and the Jews were some of the first to show up to help early on. That was one of the proudest Jewish moments of my life. We met with US Ambassador to Moldova Kent Logsdon, and brought him the message that Jewish Americans from Baltimore care about these refugees. They may speak a different language, practice a different religion and eat different foods, but we share the same divine image in which we were all created.

Ukrainian child in Moldova receiving gifts from the Beth Tfiloh group.

I am grateful to Ari Mittleman, who first suggested this trip and did so much of the legwork to make it happen. Ari’s ability to form connections with all kinds of people is remarkable. Our group of nine Jews from the United States on a solidarity mission for refugees from Ukraine – mostly Christians – were graciously hosted in a hotel in Moldova, which is owned and run by Ari’s friend, Fatih Bora, a Turkish Muslim. That’s enough to give you hope! I am inspired that in addition to Ari, seven other BT men and women dropped what they were doing, paid their own airfare, and joined us on this trip. We felt that this moment of the biggest humanitarian crisis in Ukraine since World War II, was a moment in which we had to act.

Beth Tfiloh group with Moldovan officials.

This was one of my proudest Beth Tfiloh moments. We came back asking ourselves how we could respond to Ethan’s challenge not to forget the long-term needs of those affected by this war. That is work that lies ahead. We welcome you to join us. You can support IsraAID’s vital efforts by donating online at IsraAID.org.

This dilapidated apartment building was converted into temporary housing for refugees. IsraAID took part of the building and built a playroom so moms can get a little space and breathing room.
