A timelapse through the history of hip hop
HISTORY OF
1973 HIP HOP DJ Kool Herc DJ’s his first block party (his sister's birthday) at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, Bronx, NY

orn and raised to the age of 10 in Kingston, Jamaica, DJ Kool Herc began spinning records at parties and between sets his father's band played while he was a teenager in the Bronx in the early 1970s. Herc often emulated the style of Jamaican "selectors" (DJs) by "toasting" (i.e., talking) over the records he spun, but his historical significance has nothing to do with rapping. Kool Herc's contribution to hip hop was even more fundamental. DJ Kool Herc's signature innovation came from observing how the crowds would react to different parts of whatever record he happened to be playing: "I was noticing people
used to wait for particular parts of the record to dance, maybe [to] do their specialty move." Those moments tended to occur at the drum breaks—the moments in a record when the vocals and other instruments would drop out completely for a measure or two of pure rhythm. What Kool Herc decided to do was to use the two turntables in a typical DJ setup not as a way to make a smooth transition between two records, but as a way to switch back and forth repeatedly between two copies of the same record, extending the short drum break that the crowd most wanted to hear. He called his trick the Merry Go-Round. Today, it is known as the "break beat."

Several years after hip-hop culture began to take shape at parties in the Bronx and Queens, Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" was released via Sugar Hill. It was considered the first hiphop record. Recorded on Sept. 16, 1979. Nearly one month after its release, the watershed single made its first appearance on a Billboard chart on Oct. 13, 1979.

HISTORY OF
1983 HIP HOP Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons founded Def Jam Records and Run-DMC releases their first single.
4
ef Jam was founded by Rick Rubin in his dorm room in Weinstein Hall at New York University and its first release was a single by his punk-rock group Hose. Russell Simmons joined Rubin shortly after they were introduced to each other by Vincent Gallo. The first single released with a Def Jam Recordings logo was T La Rock & Jazzy Jay's "It's Yours." In 1983, Run-D.M.C. released their first single, “It’s Like That”/”Sucker M.C.’s,” on Profile Records.
The single sounded like no other rap at the time, it was spare, blunt, and skillful, with hard beats and powerful, literate, daring vocals, where Run and D.M.C.’s vocals overlapped, as they finished each other’s lines. It was the first “new school” hip-hop recording. “It’s Like That” became a Top 20 R&B hit, as did the group’s second single, “Hard Times”/”Jam Master Jay.” Two other hit R&B singles followed in early 1984 “Rock Box” and “30 Days” before the group’s eponymous debut appeared.

By the time of their second album, 1985's King of Rock, Run-D.M.C. had become the most popular and influential rappers in America, already spawning a number of imitators. As the King of Rock title suggests, the group were breaking down the barriers between rock & roll and rap, rapping over heavy metal records and thick, dense drum loops. Besides releasing the King of Rock album and scoring the R&B hits "King of Rock," "You Talk Too Much," and "Can You Rock It Like This" in 1985, the group also appeared in the rap movie Krush Groove, which also featured Kurtis Blow, the Beastie Boys, and the Fat Boys.
