Letter from

the publisher

I am betting that it will spark a smile of your own. March is ushering in the spring. It makes me think of new life and re-birth. Perhaps we can use that idea for any life circumstance. I am sure that I am not the only one who could use it to recommit my New Year intentions that have fallen by the wayside. Speaking of spring, the Mets are back in town for Spring Training. Maybe you’ll catch a game at the newly renovated stadium…or … a bunch more traffic! Either way, I think we can feel the energy in the air. St Lucie is rockin’ & rollin’.

O

S

ay CHEEEESE! Could there be anything better? I just love enjoying the beautiful outdoors (this time of year) with my two favorites! Olivia and Wyatt came to visit and hang out at the Botanical Garden’s plant sale. Olivia got some hot pink and purple fairy hair and Wyatt bounced to the music. We’re full of smiles. They are always my silver lining. How about an inspirational Instagram? Along my travels and meeting new people, I learned a little about Gianna. I couldn’t let this comment go unspoken. Go to the Events Calendar and see what I mean. The photo is a testimony in itself. Can I get an Amen?!

ur feature article is a focus on Hibiscus Children’s Center’s new “SafeCare Progam”. Hibiscus, in collaboration with Behavior Basics, Inc., is helping to strengthen families through a prevention program. Better Living loves people helping people! Since we are approaching the most popular time of year for weddings, we added a Wedding Planner special page in this issue. We hope it is helpful and sparks some ideas. I especially want to thank our readers for patronizing our local business. Our advertisers are truly appreciative when you mention their ad in Better Living & Marketplace. It’s time to Spring Ahead. Set yourself a reminder to set your clock to Daylight Saving Time on March 8th. Wishing us all the luck of the Irish, Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Be safe. Look for our next issue in April.

Welcome To Outback BY JOANNA JOHNSON

Kyle Gilmore, OUTBACK PROPRIETOR

A recent visit to St. Lucie West’s Outback Steakhouse provided us with a delightful dining experience. Kyle Gilmore, who has been the proprietor for over eight months, proudly showed us his sparkling fresh and clean establishment. He migrated to this steakhouse from the St. Cloud, FL restaurant and told us he has been with Outback Steakhouse of Florida, LLC, for nearly six years. We are lucky to have him. We chose the Wood-Fired Grilled Shrimp on the Barbie for our shared appetizer. I know – why not the Blooming Onion, their specialty? Next time. Too many choices. As it were, we got two skewers of jumbo shrimp – four to a skewer – served on buttered toast points with bruschetta. Juicy and peppery. Kyle emphasized Outback’s commitment to bold flavors and seasonings. As tempting as the Land to Sea Steak and Lobster Special (now offered for the rest of the winter season) sounded, we selected the 9 oz. Center Cut sirloin (medium) for myself and the Bacon Bourbon Salmon for my friend. Both were done to perfection – the steak uniformly pink in the center and tender enough to have cut with a fork, if only it hadn’t been so deliciously thick! We both agreed the salmon was the most flavorful and moist we have ever been served. The accompanying honey and brown sugar-topped sweet potato and crisp grilled veggies were a treat. No dining adventure Down Under would be complete without dessert. Our selection was the Double Chocolate Mini Parfait – a chocolate mousse, with crumbled Oreo layers and whipped cream. Absolutely a perfect ending to a sumptuous meal. Under Kyle’s leadership, know that your wait staff will always be efficient and professional. Meghan, our server, couldn’t have been more attentive and polite. Also know that Outback now has delivery after 4:00 pm, for anyone within a 10 minute drive from the restaurant – that means you, PGA Village! They also have Curbside Pickup for Takeout, if you prefer. But go. Enjoy the ambience and a wonderful meal. You’ll be able to relax and have a quiet conversation in the dining room (now with ‘call ahead seating’) if you wish, or a chance to get noisy in the sports bar cheering on your favorite team. Note from the Publisher: Kyle is so pleased that our readers are patronizing Outback and taking the time to introduce themselves. Look for him in the dining room during your next visit.

Got Glasses? Here’s Why!

T

here are three reasons why people need vision correction. Eye size, eye shape and age. The first two problems cause light entering the eye to not focus properly on the retina. The retina is the lining in the back of the eye that takes a picture and sends it to your brain for processing. If the eye is larger than it should be, you are nearsighted and the image stops short in front of the retina. This means your vision is good up close. If your eye is smaller than it should be, you are farsighted and the image is behind the retina. This means you see better far away, but in severe cases may need some correction for distance too. If the front of your eye is more curved, then you have astigmatism and have trouble seeing both near and far. Finally, the hardening of the lens inside the eye causes a loss of focus ability up close. This is a natural part of the aging process which will slowly decline over several birthdays. These refractive “errors” are “corrected” by the prescription your doctor determines during the exam. Traditionally the doctor will shine a light in your eye to see what error or errors (yes they can be in combination) you are experiencing. This is because that’s what eyes do... they focus light. The doctor will come up with a very accurate starting point and then give you a few options that you may like better. This is the infamous “is it better one or two” part of the exam, but sometimes it can look the same. The lenses are actually bending (refracting) the light that is entering the eye to focus on the retina to correct the problem. Once the best correction is determined, there are several options to help you see clearly. Glasses (technically not made of glass very much anymore), contact lenses and Lasik surgery are options that can provide high tech function and fashion. In fact, today’s options are numerous and better than ever.

Pastor Mike’s Corner

“Didn’t See It Coming” Some time ago I read a book titled “Didn’t See It Coming” authored by Carey Nieuwhof. The title was the hook. I immediately related to the title, because throughout my life I have experienced some crazy things and most of them were unexpected. Some good, some not so good. There are challenges that no one expects and everyone experiences. Too often life begins a slow slide into circumstances that steal your hope and your confidence. Some of these situations might be creeping up on you right now. You have no idea it’s happening, which is precisely how it happens. Everything seems normal… until one day, it doesn’t. Left unchecked, these areas will even affect --- and infect --- your relationships with God and poison your relationships with others, especially the people you love most. I need to periodically stop and take a good look at my surroundings, both physical, emotional, and socially. Things like pride, fear of change, procrastination, all these things can leave me open to unforeseen circumstances that can hinder my walk through this lifetime. There are many instances in the Bible where we are reminded to stay accountable not only to ourselves, but to God and others we trust. This can be challenging. It requires that I embrace a sense of humility, and honesty with myself and with others, and especially with God. I need to have righteous boundaries. I’m in charge of who I let into my life. I have the keys to my life’s gate and I have the responsibility of who comes into my life’s property line. Sometimes I unknowingly let toxic people in the gate and I find that there is chaos and turmoil within my property. I need to periodically check the fence line of my property to see if any unwanted people, places, or things have crawled under the fence or has there been a breech in the perimeter line. As I daily seek God’s wisdom and direction, the chances are lessened that I will be blindsided by some unexpected challenge. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t happen anyway, but I am reassured that whatever the challenge may be, I’m not alone. I have a savior who will always be by my side and I can lean on Him to get me through. Psalms 46:1-10 “Lord you are my refuge, Lord you are my strength…….I need to be still and know that you are God.” God Bless Pastor Mike

ibiscus Children’s Center implemented a new prevention program serving St. Lucie and Indian River County families in Spring 2019. The SafeCare Program is a collaborative partnership between Hibiscus Children’s Center and Behavior Basics, Inc. and focuses on providing parenting education through home visits. Hibiscus Children’s Center and Behavior Basics welcome new clients and the services are free. SafeCare helps families in need of parenting assistance, like Jackson. *Jackson is a 28-year-old father of *Lilly, his 4-year old daughter who has been diagnosed with Down Syndrome. He was referred to the SafeCare Parenting Skills Training program after a report was made to the Department of Children and Families alleging he was not dispensing medications to the child adequately for a cold. Jackson and Lilly’s mom had a difficult relationship and disagreed often, but he

worked hard not to react in front of Lilly. The SafeCare Parent Coach met with Jackson and completed an intake to evaluate the family and present the program modules that would provide the training and skills needed. Jackson shared that he wanted to complete the program so he would be well-equipped to take care of Lilly. His love and concern for his daughter was evident and it was clear they had a strong bond. The SafeCare Parenting Skills Program entails three modules with six sessions each: Parent-Child Interactions, Health and Safety. The safety and well-being of the child is paramount. Jackson learned quickly to identify safety hazards and worked with the Parenting Coach to remove them throughout their home. As the training progressed, the next step was the Parent-Child Interactions Module. The Parent Coach modeled the desired skills to include preparing in advance for an activity, explaining the activity to the child, saying what you expect and what will happen, using good physical interaction skills, and transitioning to another activity. Two of the areas that Jackson was hoping to see some changes was in getting his daughter dressed in the morning and mealtime as she wanted to play on her tablet and would become very upset if she was asked to put it down. The Parent Coach provided Jackson opportunities to practice the skills he was learning and by the end of the module, he had mastered these skills which made life better for both Jackson and Lilly. Her behavior significantly improved and she didn’t struggle as much when her dad asked her to put away her tablet because she now knew what he expected and she received positive consequences. he last module focused on Lilly’s health and learning skills needed to identify the child’s symptoms of an illness and/ or injury. A health manual was provided and gave Jackson the appropriate resources to help ensure Lilly’s health was a priority. As Jackson completed the program, he had gained new skills and tools to help ensure Lilly would receive the best care possible at home. He was encouraged by the changes in her behavior as a result and felt more confident as a parent. The goal of the SafeCare Program is to ensure that the children’s safety and health are a priority and the parent-child interactions are appropriate and reduce the stress and challenges for both of them. Non-Toxic Spring Cleaning M

ost consumers are unaware of the dangers that might be in their cleaning products. The average household contains more than 62 toxic chemicals, say environmental experts. Ingredients in common household products have been linked to asthma, cancer, reproductive disorders, hormone disruption and neurotoxicity. Combine these chemicals with synthetic fragrance from room fresheners and candles and your air pollution could be harming your health. I always suggest taking all chemical cleaners and fragrance out of your home and open up windows to begin any health program. The air we breath in our home and work environment is critical to our overall health. I have found that using natural cleaning products not only made me breath easier but left my home smelling better than before. If you are using a misting type air freshener an essential oil diffuser might be a healthier alternative. Also using Himalayan salt lamps and plants also improve your indoor air quality. Most natural cleaning products use these main ingredients. Baking soda, vinegar, coconut oil, lemon

oil and tea tree oil. Once you stock up on the basics you will find that going natural not only saves your health but your pocket book as well.

H

ere are a few recipes I use to clean and freshen the air in my home.

Window cleaner: 1/2 cup vinegar with one gallon of water. Furniture polish: One cup of coconut oil and ten drops of lemon oil. You could also use MCT oil for a lighter application but it is more expensive. Tile floor cleaner: 1cup vinegar to one cup water. No rinsing required. (I love adding peppermint oil to cut the vinegar smell. If you add tea tree oil you will add a disinfectant quality. Toilet cleaner: 1/4 cup baking soda to 1/2 cup vinegar. A little pure Castile soap is sometimes necessary for stubborn messes. Granite: In a spray bottle prepare with one cup water to one cup vodka or rubbing alcohol a squirt of Castile soap and 10 drops of tea tree oil.

Grace is “Amazing”

L

ook, I get it. “Christian radio” is many things, and not all of them great. I’ve worked in different radio formats, but have spent most of my time on Christian pop stations. I’ve seen all the sides of it. I know the artists, the record companies, the other Christian radio hosts, and the listeners. We’re all messed-up in our own uniquely horrible – and wonderful – ways. I can find things to criticize about the industry and, while I’m at it, about myself. But this, at least, is no longer one of those things: Radio songs are somehow “too positive” and too focused on grace, love, joy, light, and mercy. Years ago, I made this argument myself. After all, most of the Psalms aren’t overflowing with happy themes. I love theological discussion, and I’m not a particularly emotional person. I fully realize that life includes much suffering. We should expect it. So why doesn’t Christian music on the radio reflect it? Well, here’s an answer: It’s radio. Radio is a particular medium. People use radio, just like they use any tool. It turns out that people on the way home from a tough job do not use the radio to hear a song about sorrow and judgment. (We can foist it on them for their own good, but they have these darn buttons they can click.)

30

BETTER LIVING & MARKETPLACE MAGAZINE

And it’s not just the music; there’s plenty I don’t say on the radio, because people listen to the radio a certain way. I know I have to get to the point, and fast. I know I can’t overwhelm people with a lot of numbers while they’re driving. I know I shouldn’t talk about myself for ten straight minutes, because people didn’t turn on my station for that. Should art reflect the whole of life, what it means to be human, what it means to be a fallen creature in a fallen world? Absolutely. Does this mean Christian music radio needs to reflect all of that? No, because it’s used a particular way. One other thing: If you want more songs about judgment, please feel free to write them. Write great ones: Plaintive ones. Profound ones. Poetic ones. Please do it. I’ll listen. But do know that judgment, itself, is not remarkable. The world swims in it. It’s in the moral air we breathe, in and out of church, in every culture, and has been since the Garden of Eden. But grace, well… that’s different. It’s THE difference, actually. Grace is “amazing”, or so I’ve sung. Maybe there’s a reason people are, perhaps, more drawn to that song than any other. And maybe that’s not so bad after all

-Brant Hansen
