MACBETH JO NESBO

$32.99 - PENGUIN RANDOM HOUSE

One of the world’s best crime authors writes as part of the Hogarth Shakespeare series. The most traditional of all the adaptations, using the title and character names from the original which really works in the format of a police procedural. The corruptions, the organised crime, the madness; it comfortably fits into the Scandinavian crime writer’s envisioned world and this thrilling stand alone is a sharp page turner which will not disappoint fans and welcomes a new readership into the fold. FICTION FICTION PONTI SHARLENE TEO

$29.99 - PAN MACMILLAN The acronym of the word PONTI - Person Of No Tactical Importance - came to mind in my first reading of this exceptional novel, a characterisation of sorts embodied by Szu. Szu is the 16 y.o. daughter of a one time cult horror actress, Amisa, who played a Pontianak in films Ponti one two and three. (Pontianak: the beautiful vampiric ghost of Malay myth who comprised of spirits of women who died while pregnant). An outsider, Szu lives with her mother and aunt: a (perhaps crooked) spiritual medium. Privileged Circe befriends Szu at school and their friendship grows and falters. Narrated by Szu, Amisa and Circe - this is an absorbing novel that spans contemporaneity and antiquity with fluidity and freshness.

THE BURNING CHAMBERS KATE MOSSE $29.99 - PAN MACMILLAN Labyrinth, the first book I read by Kate Mosse, was so immersive and detailed that it inspired me to travel to Carcassonne, France - an isolated Medieval castle with secretive lanes and history trapped within its cobblestones. The Burning Chambers is just as immersive! Set in Carcassonne, Languedoc and Toulouse, and spanning from the 16th to the 19th century, this is a Romeo and Juliet style epic that is rich with history and landscape. Minou and Piet are vividly drawn and carved a little space in my heart where their world of love, loss, adventure, war, and priceless artefacts will forever remain.

CIRCE MADELINE MILLER

A SHOUT IN THE RUINS KEVIN POWERS $29.99 - HACHETTE From the author of the much lauded Iraq War novel The Yellow Birds comes A Shout in the Ruins. As an ex-soldier, Powers knows the effect war has on its powerless participants. His focus here is the American Civil War and slavery, and what hope love stands when set against them. He portrays the intimate but paints on a vast canvas, seeking to answer profound questions, like how the seeds of a nation are sown and their tainted produce reaped. PROPERTY LIONEL SHRIVER $29.99 - HARPER COLLINS A striking new collection of ten short stories and two novellas that explores the idea of property in every meaning of the word, from the acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of the National Book Award finalist So Much forThat and the international bestseller We Need to Talk About Kevin. What could be more topical than ‘property’ for property obsessed Sydney?! The Standing Chandelier novella, which opens this collection, is a stand-out.

$29.99 - ALLEN & UNWIN What makes someone a villain? Are we ever villains in our own stories? Madeline Miller explores these questions and more in her portrayal of Circe, the witch from Odysseus’s legend. It is a touching tale of a young girl finding her place in the world and learning to use the power she possesses. Circe’s voice is pure, as a daughter, mother and lover. It’s a book about the role of women and the space they carve out for themselves. This is not a fast-paced read, but it is a very worthwhile one. It is great to see Circe’s voice brought to life in such a vivid way.

THE PHARMACIST’S WIFE VANESSA TAIT $29.99 - ALLEN & UNWIN You can totally judge a book by its cover, right? You can with Vanessa Tait’s Victorian-era story of addiction, sexual obsession and the disempowerment of women, which will appeal to lovers of Sarah Waters and more besides. Love. Desire. Vengeance. A deadly alchemy indeed!

YOU THINK IT, I’LL SAY IT CURTIS SITTENFIELD $29.99 - PENGUIN RANDOM HOUSE Breezy and approachable writing make Sittenfeld’s first story collection a real gem. The theme of each of these ten stories is judgement and the tension that arises when people’s quick dash judgment of others is incorrect. This fabulous book is one to savour because you won’t want these dazzling shorts to end.

THE LIBRARIAN SALLEY VICKERS $32.99 - PENGUIN Set in the 1950s, The Librarian is an acute observation of the emotional life of a small English town. Sylvia, the new children’s librarian, arrives with a mission to share her love of books with the town’s youngsters. She discovers much more – passion, joy, disappointment and courage. Vickers’ tender writing also explores the impact reading can have on young lives, an aspect of this book I particularly loved; I’ll be looking for a few of the titles that are included in the narrative. A thoughtful and inspiring read.

THE OVERSTORY RICHARD POWERS $32.99 - PENGUIN RANDOM HOUSE The much anticipated and hugely ambitious work from the lauded and award-winning Richard Powers. Fuses the multiple narrative structure of someone like David Mitchell with Annie Proulx’s Barkskins to create a history of migration to the USA, and a principled hymn to the majesty of trees. Not so much a shrub as a redwood giant. Think sequoia. Think big.

SCIENCE FICTION

ONE WAY S. J. MORDEN $29.99 - HACHETTE

This very human thriller follows Frank Kitteridge, a lifer seeking purpose. He and seven others are sent to Mars to build the first ever NASA base. Work and a desire to survive the harsh conditions give new meaning to the prisoners’ lives, but all is not well – someone is killing off the team. I found the science behind surviving on an inhospitable planet, the emotional journey of the characters, and the tension created in this novel completely fascinating.

KING OF ASHES RAYMOND E. FEIST

$39.99 - HARPER COLLINS In the Kingdom of Garn, the ruling family of Ithrace are exterminated by the King of Sandura as he moves to rule over all five kingdoms. But in the chaos of war, was the newborn son of the last king of Ithrace saved? Rumours stir that he was taken in by the Quelli Nacosti, a secret society of spies, who aim to infiltrate the wealthy and powerful. Acutely aware of the danger, the four remaining kings move to have the child killed before he matures into his fiery vengeance.

THE TANGLED LANDS PAOLO BACIGALUPI & TOBIAS S. BUCKELL $29.99 - HARPER COLLINS Told in four interrelated stories, The Tangled Lands is an evocative and epic story of resistance and heroic sacrifice. A once decadent empire is now rotting from within, crippled by the misuse of magic, and facing environmental collapse. At the forefront is a giant plant that grows relentlessly and sends people into a coma with the slightest prick. These four bleak and eerie tales from the last surviving city of this empire read almost like dark fairytales, each exploring themes of tragedy, revenge and resistance.

MEMOIR MEMOIR BUTTERFLY ON A PIN ALANNAH HILL

Intertwined with the strong militant tactics of Pankurst, this book looks at women who’ve used their voices for change in a male dominated society.

ACCIDENTAL ICON IRIS APFEL

SHARP MICHELLE DEAN $32.99 - HACHETTE

NON FICTION

Award-winning critic Michelle Dean gathers an extraordinary cast of women – among them Joan Didion, Zora Neal Hurston, and Susan Sontag – under the sign of a single compliment. Sharpness often implies intelligence, elegance, deftness, and precision. A love-letter to brilliant women.
