plan

About Play Before You Plan is a set of 2 short mobilebased games and 1 guided tour that challenge players to experience and value the complex cultural economies of Rye Lane. Players sample scenarios of starting a new business, raising a young family and re-envisioning the future of the street. Why do streets matter? Streets are real-time, open archives of urban change. Unpredictable economic, social and cultural practices emerge from the compressed test strip of a city street. Why make a game of it? Games call for empathy and detailed observation, qualities that can be tested and then applied to influence the planning and design process. Do you have to be on Rye Lane to play? The games run on the open source platform, 7scenes, which allows people to script their own location-based, urban narratives for anyone to freely download and play on an iPhone, iPad or Android. These are GPS-based games, so you must be on Rye Lane to play! Learn more at playbeforeplan.tumblr.com

shopomama You are a mother of two living in a nearby flat off Rye Lane, having recently moved to London from Lagos. It’s Friday morning and you have a big weekend ahead! Your sister is getting married this Sunday, and you need to buy new outfits for the family. Also, three cousins from Nigeria arrive to your flat tonight just in time for dinner! You have £150 to shop for yourself, your husband, your 2 children and your 3 guests. With your 7-year-old daughter walking by your side and 2-year-old son in a stroller, you have up to 2 hours to complete the following tasks in any order you choose (and try not to go over budget!):

Shop for dinner, clothes and beauty as a mother of two from Lagos.

- Get a manicure while someone watches your kids; - Buy a ponytail extension and pay a stylist’s fee; - Shop for ingredients to cook tonite’s dinner; - Buy a suit for your son and dress for your daughter; - Buy a dress for yourself and a shirt for your husband; - Buy a stylish ‘mom’ handbag to tote nappies, books and snacks to the wedding (and to match your dress!); - Buy a Nollywood DVD to entertain your house guests.

instructions Go shopping in any order you like. If you or your kids get tired and need a retreat - head to the 4th floor of the Peckham library, where there is a cozy children’s section with a great view of the Shard. The 2nd floor of McDonald’s is also a good escape - it has a child-friendly restroom, free WIFI and a nice view of Rye Lane. Can I really buy everything I need for £150? You will discover bargains, lay-away plans, child-friendly amenities, and more. Shop at the mini department stores of Rye Lane that offer multiple businesses from one compact locale. Even McDonald’s has more to offer than just happy meals!
