Reflection: In the study of architectural design, I think that the design methods and techniques attracted me and encouraged me to move forward. Design not only depends on inspiration, but also requires different technical means to achieve different purposes and effects. Design is not just a method to solve problems, but also needs to learn to find the best solution from multiple directions. In the study of parameterization courses, I mainly learned to use different parameters to control the shape I want. These shapes are also very special, they usually come from a collection of specific patterns. At the same time, parameterization can also control the surface we want. Parametric design brings more controllable objects and design efficiency. But I think what I learned more is how to combine traditional design ideas with computer technology. For example, in my design, I designed the gazebo using parametric, but how to combine the independent gazebo with the environment requires comprehensive consideration. In the future, I believe I still need to make a lot of efforts in parametric design, such as learning more plug-ins to make the design more flexible

About Myself...... Although I started with landscape architecture, I still have a strong love for architecture. I have integrated the knowledge I have learned, and I hope that I will go longer on the road of design. . .

MODULE 1 M PAVILION

4

Mpavilion is an important design exhibition launched by Amanda in 2015. She aims to design a pavilion combined with nature. Therefore, it can provide people with a good spatial experience, and also can move and light like leaves in the sunlight through pavilion. In my modeling process, I first Analyse the spacial meaning of Mpavilion and try to find the logic about how to build up in Rhino. With the help of the adjustment in Rhino, I soonly finish the overall design of Pavilion. With the study of the design process of Amanda’s Pavilion, it gradually shows that under the condition of continuous technological innovation, designers are constantly looking for ways for humans and nature to coexist.

Among them, the scope of some people’s activities has been affected by the landscape. Some activities have also been affected by something special such as coffee table. But to a certain extent, they have not completely restricted the flow of people. That is to say, space does not have an absolute functionality, but instead guides people to do what they want to do. As for transition, the thick dark lines on the drawings, as well as the roof edge and environment, represent three different levels of space. They all have a spatial line that enables people to cross. At the same time, I also learned how to build up a complete model while using plan, elevation and research. This provides more logical way of thinking how to arrange the space. Why do I say it is a lively space? According Amanda’s description, the concept becomes more clear. Human life is always connected with architecture. Regardless of the size of the space design, people can always find their own shelter in a certain space.Such a space, they do not need a specific definition to let people know the purpose of building him. On the contrary, some people can stay alone, and some people can communicate and gather. Even better, they can also give people a feeling of rhythm like nature, and let people be in it.

Isometric Drawing MPavilion- A Lively Space The image on the left side is the isometric view of the modelled MPavilion. In this view, I manily show the pattern on the shelter , the depth of the Pavilion, the shadow on the floor , as well as the texture of floor and landscape. In amanda’s Pavilion, the most intuitive pictures are the roofs that are as elegant as “leaves”. In more detailed objects that our view coud have, is the middle hexagonal shelter and wooden floor for people to walk under the eaves. With the growing plant, they may not show any special arrangment, but the blurry and vivid edges make nature and harmony coexist. The space also subtly creates a special range of activity and transition space.

5

Circulation Diagram Although there is no specific obstruction space on the pavilion to make people inaccessible, some special things make them slightly limit the scope and path of activities. The trajectory of people like this is closely related to pavilion itself and the environment. However, under the influence of environment and design, people have different densities and crowds, which makes the space flexible

6

Threshold Diagram Obviously, the entire space is effectively divided into three partsinner shelter, outer shelter including floor and environment. Among them, two transition spaces are required to pass from the outside to the space itself. Each boundary makes people have different spatial experiences after crossing the transition space.

MODULE 2 Generating Ideas

MODEL 1 - Design Matrix

In my matrix, all objects are generated based on existing basic graphics. In continuous experimentation, the rotation, scale, attraction points and other methods are used to effectively transform the model. At the same time, how to master the cuboid is also critical. In different positions, the effect of cutting the cube is also different with the changes of shape. However, in Model 1, I used a particularly practical circle as the basis for my growth. Through precedent learning, a circle can not only make the surface look smooth in many cases, but also form a gradient rotation

9

Isomatric The rotation is one of the the key process during my attempt. The dea comes from some increced wavy curve. With the series of factor of rotation, the object can rotate in each geometry which could make object more flexible and controllable.

MODEL 2 Model 2 came from the first work shop. It uses 27 (perhaps more) points to form an array, and forms a fixed frame at each point, and then uses the fixed frame to form a shape. In this way, each point will have the same shape, thus forming a growth.

12

MODEL 2 - Design Matrix

Model 2 came from the first work shop. It uses 27 (perhaps more) points to form an array, and forms a fixed frame at each point, and then uses the fixed frame to form a shape. In this way, each point will have the same shape, thus forming a growth. Later on the original basis, these models can move with fixed attraction points or change the proportion. After the basic object, we can use the cube cutting to form some fixed shapes according to the distance and connection between each of its small elements 13

14

It is not difficult to see that a part of model 2 runs through space. He brought some light to the space. At the same time, the holes are made out of circles, and each hole has a different height, so that people can not sit and watch from the height

MODEL 3 The second model follows the tree growth from workshop 2. The tree growth means geometry could expand to different scale which is more like a tree with tree data in grasshopper.

16

MODEL 3 - Design Matrix

The third model follows the tree growth from workshop 2. The tree growth means geometry could expand to different scale which is more like a tree with tree data in grasshopper.Same like model 1, I started with several simple geometry. Then I adjusted the different sizes. In model 3, I found it that under the drowth, it is more suitable to do Additive process with cube. This is mainly because that each geometry is faced with outside, which has strong shape on its surface. Therefore, followed the idea, the object could grow several times to find out suitable corner or flexible area. Based on last step- additive process, the process could be done by several times. I used another same growth from last additive part, and combine first part and second part together with boolean union. Then I set the object as another new whole. Finally, again, I used the same 50*50*50 cube to do additive process.

17

Isomatric This a Additive process, I first create a basic additive solid with cube, which is morel like furniture. But it looks like the Space utilization is very low, so I think of doing additive process just like my tree growth with several times and every step based on last step.

FABRICATION Fabrication teaches us how to use 3D printing and laser printing to make the model we want. They enable us to clearly understand what our design results in reality

21

Thickness Analyse

Attempt

Thickness analysis plays a transitional role in 3d printing and waffle. It gives us an idea of how our thickness is formed, and it gives us an idea of what kind of object we’re going to form roughly based on our thickness. Although thickness analysis is a technical step in 3d printing, it also helps us analyze some of the waffle problems. For example, we can know which parts are the thinnest, and they may not be displayed in the waffle later

To avoid problems like the one on the left, I also added other objects that I thought were appropriate for different waffle tests. In preparation, I put in some curved objects, and then some rectangular objects. These objects may could find their own waffles in different shapes and shapes.

22

3D PRINTING

In 3D printing, we need to do some parameter adjustments. In our parameterized adjustments, we can change the direction of our model and the printer we choose. After we have selected these indices, we can click on the simulated print to observe. After I printed all the models, our model could be fully shown on the computer. Here you can see that there are some yellow parts in the model, these parts are the additional support structure needed in the model making process, of course, we can not need these extra parts after we really finished 23

Waffle Structure

Consideration of area of waffle. Some area may be too small for laser cut, some of them may abandoned in the process of forming label. Some offset surface may cross together and can not fit well in the gap. So the movement of offset surface is important In radial test, it is important to control the unmber of waffle, since they may cross together if they are too many

24

LASER CUTTING The picture shows the laser cutting. In this page and step, we learned how to use another technology to build our waffle model. I chose Model 2 to set. In this process, we have several notice. The first one is that we should use different layers to identify which we shoud cut and which should only be labelled. Obviously, the text should be labelled and the edge of each shape should cut. Therefore, the text is shown red and cutting edge shows black. However, one of the edges in each shape should be labelled red as it is etch. Besides, I leave the gap between each other so that the laser cutting would be cut accuratly with each object. Also, I divide waffle into X and Y waffle part in oder to identify clearly and know to to make physical model. As for material, we should also add the name of material - Box Board and select the thickness that we should have.

25

26

Model 1

Waffle Model Photograph The waffle of model 1 focuses on the experience when people traveling the object. With the change of height, people were guided to inside . Moreover, the waffle structure is more full of a Visual aesthetics. Because the number of waffle from model 2 is more than model 1’s, this is mainly because the model 2 is suitable for setting more waffles and this could give the object a sense of feeling that it could be a big scale in reality.

Model 2

Waffle Model Photograph The waffle of model 2 focuses on the structure to support itself and the sunlight analyse. The model is used for analyse the sunlight and structure with waffle study. As you can see, the interesting place is the central of the object, which sunlight get in through the hole on the top. Meanwhile, the waffle structure provides more chances of stay for people.

27

3 MODULE 3 Pavilion Design Music always reminds us of some natural rhythm. Just like strings, it may become a terrain line. In my pavilion, my main concept is mainly to find out the ambiguity between nature and architecture. My Pavilion provides a temporary resting place for people. Since Victoria Garden has a theme about art performance, what I think of is how to combine pavilion with art and environment I thought of a butterfly-like shape, combined with the terrain and pavilion, to form a streamlined transition. After then, the pavilion can be opened, facing the audience and forming a good vision.

The internal structure is also a supporting structure, consisting of a waffle with a single direction and a partially vertical direction. Materials room seasoned timber. The materials of warm colors can give the building a light feeling, but also combine with nature. In addition, wood can also give people a more intimate experience

Since my landscape is larger than pavilion, I need to think about controlling their proportions. In the iso chart, I mainly used the SW perspective to observe the entire design. First, SW can clearly reflect my landscape layout. Second, the SW direction is convenient for me to analyze the internal structure of pavilion with an explosion diagram. In this picture, I mainly included landscape, materials and texture, as well as structural content. The purpose is to allow people to see my design ideas more clearly and intuitively. I think the landscape and texture of iso are very important. Because in black and white, the most important purpose is to identify different materials. Therefore, the help of texture is more needed. In addition, the landscape is also very important for the formation of buildings. As you can see, some of my terrain is also undulating, so I have to mark their location with shadows and what kind of trees they have. For the exploded part, I used a 1:25 ratio to represent pavilion, so that people can more clearly see the combination principle of the two structures inside and outside.

My circulation is divided into three levels, the first circulation (pavilion area), the second circulation (outdoor seating), and the third circulation (outdoor platform). These three circulations correspond to people with different needs. For example, some people do not want to enter the pavilion to appreciate, they can stand in the third circulation to listen to music, etc. For pavilion, his interior is also divided into two parts: rest and performance, which also correspond to different crowd densities.

Since my landscape is radial, I really want the wings of butterflies. Therefore, the transition space from the environment to the landscape is at the edge of the wings. And for outdoor and indoor spaces, there is also a transition space to guide people from outdoor to indoor

31

Design Iteration

Development

In my design, I used grasshopper to achieve parametric adjustment for my design, which shows how CAD manage Abstraction in my design. For example, I use range and series to make the changes of heights in each points on the curve. The way of how to change the heights is to adjust different number in grassopper. Next, this points could reform the new curve that doesn’t belong to one surface but at different levels. As you can see, I only have to adjust numbers from input and they generate “Parametric“ model for me as a result. (fig 1)As for Reduction, Loft process actually used this method to reduce several datas (curves )and make them to one single list. Normalization mostly happened in my terrain and tween curves.

Inspiration

For my design, i mosty had an inspiration with Harbin Opera House. Therefor, I think grasshopper is more like a execution. But first I still have soe try in it. The picture on the left is the Harbin Opera House. First of all, because pavilion has the nature of performance, the case of finding the opera house is also very meaningful. In addition, the streamlined surface can well blend nature and Zaha-style landscape. At the same time, such a surface can also lay the foundation for the waffle structure I want to make.

The iteration matrix reflects the production process of Secondary Circulation PathPath Secondary Circulation a pavilion. For my design, I started with a few simple geometric shapes, and used different curves as the cutting point to change the height in the grasshopper, and finally formed a shell-shaped pavilionIn fact, the changes in the first few parts are very easy. The most important thing is how to connect my body and the internal waffle support structure. I used offsets in both directions to create two thicknesses. Then make the inner thickness into waffle shape. And for another external thickness. Pufferfish is used to add some rich shapes to the surfaceIn addition, it is also very focused to adjust the height of each curve. Because I use the divided curves of different ranges to increase the height of the series. In order to ensure that each curve is in the right position, I tried many times

For the terrain part, I used the gray-scale terrain method to perfectly combine my terrain with the environment and buildings. First, I draw and color my plan in black and white. After ensuring the gray scale, importing the written gray scale terrain allows him to gradually form the height change I want. Through adjustment, my height is set within 2500mm, and the smoothness is level 4

35

Textures & Materials 1. For pavilion and pedestal and landscape walls, I used Grc concrete textures and materials. In order to make my pavilion better integrate with the environment and does not look very heavy, GRC concrete material is a good choice. In addition, the color of grc can not be so dark, it seems that the atmosphere of the building will not be very tense.

1

2. For some ellipsoids that directly contact the ground, I used pearl granite. This can not only divert the crowd, but also simulate the rocks of nature and create a natural transition.

2

3. For the waffle part, I used the plywood material and adjusted the color to warm orange. Because the color of concrete is whitegray, the orange plywood can overatmosphere and warm the interior space. And more suitable for performances and other indoor activities. 4. For the rest of the seat (including the interior of the pavilion), I used seasoned timber, the wood can be closer to nature. People sit on it and feel relaxed, it doesn’t look very cold

37

Section Model In the section, first I created a 200*300*150 box, and adjusted a certain angle to the appropriate cutin surface, and used booleansplit to decompose the model. Among them, I need to switch the different widths to the thickness suitable for the model and scale it. I used laser cutting to make the terrain, and the main building was 3D printed. During this period, the key issue is that the contour line required for laser cutting must be closed.
