founded the program as a way to give back to the community. “When I came to Beverly Hills High School, I started from scratch," exclaimed Smith. "We turned the program around and it is now the number one elective – I'm influencing young minds and it's been very rewarding." Smith’s class has served Beverly High undergrads for five consecutive years, becoming the most popular vocational offering in the 90210 district. Entitled “Instruction in Culinary Arts,” Smith’s course provides students in grades 10-12 with a balanced program rooted in both culinary and life skills. While Smith strives to pass along his passion for food, he creates a learning environment that fosters the development of positive self-image and increased self-esteem. The class challenges young scholars to strive and achieve their personal best both in and outside the classroom. Beverly Hills High is thrilled to have Smith—a young chefturned-teacher as part of their staff. “Darrell’s dedication to the proKimberly Esquivel, Rebecca Hakhamian, Samira Tiarraz, Nita Anavim gram is undeniable,” states Beverly Hills High School principal Chef Darrell A. Elegant, Mystical, Romantic... A perfect description for the inspired beauty of famed fashion designer Shahla Dorriz, whose spectacular designs continue after 20 years to dress some of the biggest names in the entertainment, social and political worlds. From the Oscars and Emmys to soap operas, movies, ballet, and seen on the pages of prestigious magazines in America and throughout Europe, Shahla’s extensive collection includes: Bridal, Party, Evening wear and Daytime elegance. Each piece is handmade to the fit and feel of her clients whether it is an exotic fabric with her signature hand-painted artistic flair, or the extravagant decorative lace which often details her romantic designs, Shahla's fashions are for the woman who loves distinctive style and ultimate elegance. One iconic evening dress Shahla created was a ‘Moon Dress’ exclusively for Lois Aldren (astronaut Buzz Aldren’s ex-wife) which she wore to a Oscar event. The magical, hand-painted cosmic spectacular was shown on TV and in print across the globe. Another of Shahla’s famous looks is her Rumi Design Collection inspired by the beautiful poems of Rumi, Saadi and Hafez—great poets of Iran. Shahla was the first designer to introduce poetry themes from ‘Rumi’, ‘Hafiz’, and ‘Khayyam’ in her clothes, and brought the line to the public during an interview on the E! Channel. Shahla says, “I feel one of my greatest design contributions is my introduction of ethnic fashion to the world more than 20 years ago. The writings of peace, happiness and love I inscribe on many pieces in my collections are now considered signature work and recognized worldwide.” Shahla credits her mother’s great talent and artistic designs in the textile business for instilling in her at an early age a desire to inspire peace and beauty in the world, with impressionable and unforgettable fashion. Shahla’s son, Alexandre Dorriz, has followed in his famous mother’s footsteps majoring in both fashion and photography in college. He has joined her on runways across the globe from America, Paris, London and New York, where his day and evening wear for men and women is seen on young Hollywood elite at entertainment venues and fashion events. With the opening of their exclusive salon in Beverly Hills, California, the brilliance of Shahla and Alexandre’s creative designs are on display for the public.l

Addiction is a behavioral disorder, and it is possible to change behavior for good!

Ending Addiction For Good! Cliffside Malibu Treatment Center THE 5 CRITICAL STAGES OF CHANGE • STAGE 1: Precontemplation—before someone even acknowledges there is a problem. • STAGE 2: Contemplation—a person recognizes a problem, but isn’t sure they want to deal with it. • STAGE 3: Preparation—an individual gets ready to change their behavior.

suffering and struggle to be in that special place of thriving.” Dr. Debra Judelson, FACC, FACP Specialist, Internal Medicine and Cardiology and one of Beverly Hills’ most noted physicians stated, “At the heart of healing are two essential ingredients: effective treatments and hope for success. Ending Addiction for Good offers both in large doses. If you are an addict, the loved one of an addict, or

• STAGE 4: Action—the actual process of change. • STAGE 5: Maintenance—a behavior change, in which sobriety becomes effortless.

How does Cliffside Malibu achieve change?

Cliffside Malibu Treatment Center has released a new book on Amazon, “Ending Addiction for Good,” written by Richard Taite, founder/CEO of Cliffside Malibu and Constance Scharff, PhD, Addiction Researcher for Cliffside Malibu. By relating their own life stories and struggles with addiction and how they overcame their problems, this book provides a message of hope to addicts as well as the family and friends of addicts. The book reveals the successful treatment protocol developed by Cliffside Malibu—one of the most successful treatment centers in the world. What causes a person to become an addict? Richard Taite: Addiction is a response to pain. When pain becomes overwhelming, a person begins to selfmedicate to get through the day. Not getting needs met as a child, enduring physical abuse, suffering some type of trauma... are examples of how an addiction can begin.

How do you heal the pain? Unless you repair the initial injury, you can’t move forward. You can’t think your way out of this. You have to feel it viscerally. With good therapy and a dedicated therapist you can learn these lessons on a deep level, and stop creating unnecessary wreckage in your life.

What sets Cliffside Malibu apart from other treatment facilities? We follow the model of change set forth by Dr. James Prochaska, one of the most referenced psychologists in the world, in his book Changing for Good. He outlines five stages people must move through to accomplish major change, primarily having to do with mental preparedness and willingness to take new actions. People do not change in just one leap. Each stage of change presents distinct issues.

Numerous interventions are available, but each client is treated on an individual case by case basis depending on what he/she needs to peel away the layers of their particular addiction. We offer hyperbaric therapy to support brain function, orthomolecular therapy in which vitamins and supplements are used to restore wholeness to the body and an eating disorder specialist for clients who have an eating disorder underlying their addiction. All interventions are customized to the specific needs of a client and we offer intensive individual psychotherapy every other day so clients speak with a therapist one day, have a day to process their self-discoveries, then speak with their therapist the following day. Small group sessions are led by licensed clinical psychotherapists.

Why is individualized treatment so important? No ONE treatment program can meet the needs of each client. We assess what a client needs based on an initial evaluation of that person’s willingness to change and his/her personal preferences. Each modality we use is individualized as a client’s needs may change from one stage to the next, and we accommodate this change to achieve the best results possible.

Why is Ending Addiction for Good so successful? Noted experts in the addiction/treatment industry endorse our treatment program and view our new book as clear and pointed groundbreaking evidence that a successful, working plan is now available to end the heart breaking struggle of drug addiction and alcoholism. Developer of the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change and Director of the Cancer Prevention Research Center at the University of Rhode Island, Dr. James Prochaska said, “What a joy to be part of the journey of individuals transcending their

IS ON THE MOVE! by Michael P. Naughton

In February, VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital moves to a new 42,000 sq.ft. facility on Sepulveda Blvd., one block south of its current location. The spacious, 3-level facility contains nine fully equipped surgery suites, 19 examination rooms, two procedure rooms, CT and MRI, medical oncology suite, bone marrow transplant center, a radiation oncology suite housing a linear accelerator, a rehabilitation center, pharmacy, laboratory and spacious parking among other features. VCA’s new state-of-the art hospital is one of the largest integrated veterinary medical centers in the world, providing all around specialty comprehensive medical and surgical care. I take my dog to VCA West LA, and can attest to its quality and integrity. They have top notch specialists, veterinarians and fees are fair for services rendered. I had the pleasure to interview David Bruyette, VCA’s West Los Angeles Medical Director and internal medicine doctor specializing in Endocrinology.

MN: VCA is an Animal Hospital that encompasses many aspects of veterinary medicine. DR. BRUYETTE: We are a unique hospital not just a general practice or specialty practice...what I call a “hybrid hospital” offering both. We have six full-time general practice veterinarians/specialists in multiple areas and 49 doctors. Our goal is to have 50-55. We employ 150-160 staff, but want to increase it to 250. On the specialty side we have medicine, surgery, cardiology, behavior, ophthalmology, dermatology, radiation, physical therapy and oncology. Specialty services are in-house. Clients won’t be moved from facility to facility; they will be seen by a specialist the same day if that’s what they require. Specialty services are available 24/7 days a week, we never close. Comprehensive care is available for almost anything a pet might require. MN: What’s your role as VCA Medical Director. DR. BRUYETTE: I’m an Internal Medicine doctor and see patients, with diabetes, thyroid, and adrenal problems, but my main role is to oversee operations of the hospital. As Medical Director, I supervise the staff and our Hospital Manager (Rayna Faumuina) takes care of staffing issues (front office/technical staff) and is our liaison to the corporate office. We have supervisors for the technicians and supervisors for the front office staff that report to Rayna. When I started in 1996, we only had four or five specialists, and a couple of general practitioners. Slowly, over time, we have added doctors and services.

MN: VCA has 600 animal hospitals in the U.S. with over 200 board-certified specialists for patients and it’s growing. Are there misconceptions about pet hospitals and health care? David Bruyette, DVM, DACVIM Medical Director DR. BRUYETTE: When VCA started, concerns were that the face of veterinary medicine VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital would become corporate and an impersonal environment. YOU and “UNCLE SAM” The Year End is the Perfect Time to Fine Tune your Business’s Bookkeeping By Dira Creek, MBA Accounting & Management Practical Individual, Small Business, Corporate As 2013 approaches, it’s a good time to review the FOUR major components for successfully running a business:

Cash Management Bookkeeping & Accounting Business Management Internal Organization For any sized organization—from a sole proprietorship to a large company—to survive and flourish in today’s ever-changing business environment, all four of these components need to be understood and well managed. Recording financial transactions accurately and on a timely basis is imperative to effectively manage your business. Maintaining your accounting records helps management evaluate and track income and, as important, track expenses related to the day-to-day operation of your business. Often, management spends too much time tracking revenue streams, but is not fully aware of all of the expenses related to the running of their business. Further, all companies need to fully understand the related local, state and federal govern-ment rules for their type of industry.

Increased revenue doesn’t always mean increased net income if the company’s expenses are growing at a faster pace than revenue growth It is best to record every eligible business expense to get an accurate picture of the bottom line income. Increased revenue doesn’t always mean increased net income if the company’s expenses are growing at a faster pace than revenue growth. The net income (as a percentage of revenue) will be less than it was prior to the revenue growth. These transactions, which can be purchases, sales, receipts and payments should be recorded in the correct ledger to create a proper accounting reporting in the form of an income or profit and loss statement, and then a balance statement should be pre-

t is imperative to have a solid credit report that is accurate and up to date. As credit restrictions increase during uncertain economic times, each of us needs to make sure our credit reports is accurate and doesn’t contain errors. Your credit history contained in your report is important as it makes up the credit score derived from it. While the report will give lenders, employers, landlords, etc. a credit overview of the person with whom they are doing business, the credit score gives them a single, solid, data point with which to make decisions that have a deep impact on your financial future.

4.

The following are important points to be aware of as they relate to your credit report and score.

Spread debt around. If you’re close to your credit limit on any one credit card or line of credit, your score will be hurt. Suppose you have three credit cards with $1000 limits, and one is maxed out while the other two have no balances. Credit-wise, you are better off carrying a $400 balance on all three credit cards than keeping one of them close to the max. Even though you will owe $200 more in the latter scenario your score will be better. Having different sources of credit is better for your credit score than having a credit report dominated by credit card debt. So keep the card and or account type in mind when you are applying for new credit.

1. Closing accounts hurts your score. Instead of

5. Focus on the big picture. Having one 30-day late

closing old accounts, just pay them off and leave the accounts open. The longer you’ve had an account, the better for your credit score, so you should keep the oldest credit account you have active even if you do not use it. Creditors close accounts that aren’t used frequently themselves, so there is no need for you to do it. The negative blow to your credit score is the same as if you’d closed it yourself. In some cases, the creditor will stop reporting an unused account to your credit report, and you’ll lose the positive impact it has on your score. The best case scenario is to keep open old accounts and use the card or account every six months or so in order to keep the accounts open and actively reported.

payment on a credit report full of on time payments is not that damaging in the big picture of the credit score. Likewise, credit reporting agencies have also

2. Check your report frequently. You’ll also want to check your report to make sure it’s correct and in doing so, this is the best way to uncover identity theft. Early detection of credit report issues and frequent review can limit the amount of damage a thief can do to your credit rating.

discounted the impact of collection items under $100. To get the best possible score, focus on a healthy debt mix that includes different kinds of credit and loans. Don’t make any late payments, keep your balances moderate, and above all, be patient. You can’t improve your score over night, but with time, good borrowing behavior and credit reporting diligence all have a dramatic impact on your creditworthiness.

Sexy, Talented &Unforgettable By Suzanne Takowsky

IT’S OSCAR TIME. Once a year mere mortals get to feel like “one-of-the-gang” when the biggest night in entertainment rolls around. With millions of eyeballs glued to the tube, a global audience of adoring fans can get close to their favorite stars as these cinema icons walk that oh so famous red carpet. Not only do celebs have to look ageless for flashing cameras broadcasting around the world, but have to gracefully dodge questions about the who, what, and why of their lives by nosey interviewers. From the second Hollywood became a fixation in our lives, as far as the general public is concerned, none have a clue where a celebrity’s professional life ends and his/her personal lives begin. What we see on screen is what we envision a star’s LIFE to be. No wonder we get confused when the action, bad boy muffin we drool over in a movie turns out to be married, off the market and a daddy to a nest of kids at home. Or the sexy, kickass, breathy chick that makes a regular guy’s life somewhat livable turns up—pregnant? Deep down we don’t dwell on the fact that what we see in the movies is not real for an actor. Just because movies are entertaining for us does not translate the same for stars who appear in them. For them movies, are their day job, their profession, their work. And when the

movie is done — they go home to REAL life. Nevertheless, I for one insist on maintaining my favorite stars persona of fabulous on and off the screen whether it’s true or not. I think they deserve to be thought of as fabulous all the time. Because they are. They’ve chosen a profession that although lucrative is demanding and unforgiving with fans who are fickle. For who we adore and think is HOT today... we turn our backs on tomorrow for whoever steps up to take their place. On any given day of the week, any hour of the day, whether we are happy, sad, alone or cuddled in bed, we can turn on TV or go to a movie and for two hours get lost in the months of hard work it took for a star to give us his/her best. We can forget about own lives for two hours while watching performances that have an ability to transport us into the thrilling story of a star’s on-screen alter-life. To successfully accomplish this year after year and film after film for any star makes movie-making little less fantasy and LOTS of hard work. MY THOUGHT: each star deserves an Oscar. Sure some performances might be better than others, but no doubt each actor and actress we see on-screen is giving us the best they have and that is worth an Oscar AND deserving of loyalty and less criticism from the peanut gallery. My staff and I chose a handful of actors who continue to rock the world with their brilliance year after year. Forget a “performance” these guys are so convincing that neither they nor their movies will be forgotten. Michael Madsen. Where is this man and when will we see him again? Chicago-born Michael remains a jaw-dropping, bigger than life actor (Donnie Brasco, Die Another Day, Species, Hell Ride, Sin City and 170 other movies) that not only get our hearts pitter-pattering with his sexy, good looks and can turn on a dime with an in-your-face attitude, but he sends chills up our spine

Cannes, two Coppa Volpis, and on and on go nominations. He has gotten more attention worldwide for his hair (he looked like a total freak with the creepiest-ever haircut in No Country For Old Men) than any guy alive. Ironically, the dude is married to the gorgeous Penelope Cruz, making two breathtaking creatures in the same household (not fair!). Certainly not a woman alive wants to think of Javier as “off the market” but alas married life has taken our boy away, and he is basking in his daddy-duties (the couple have one child and another on the way). The Canary Island-born Javier (the first Spaniard to be nominated for an Oscar) doesn’t seem to be as interested in quantity as quality when it comes to filmmaking. Memorable movies include Before Night Falls, Biutiful, Jamón Jamón, and a leg long list of others that prove over and over how talented this guy is. Sometimes Javier’s roles seem too far and between (he has around 40 films under his belt), but when he takes on a role…it’s a good one, and he owns it. In his recent film, Skyfall, he brought forth another of his brandish calculated sadistic moods to give the audience another peek into what makes him an unforgettable creature of darkness. WHY NOT another Oscar? Javier starred in his first film when he was six years old and comes from a long line family of actors. .

with his cold-blooded, die hard and fast skills as a villain. His sadistic killer role in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dog will remain forever one of the scariest and most brutal movies EVER. Whether you’re 70 or 20—he’s the man. Over a 30 year acting career, he’s taken numerous Best Actor Awards and last year garnered major attention in Justin Bieber's video, As Long As You Love Me (he beat up the Bieb!). A noted author (his books are best sellers) he finished Expecting Rain, Forward by Jerry Hopkins (Jim Morrison and Rolling Stone magazine) and as an accomplished poet, amassed an international following with his first book, Burning In Paradise (Forward by Dennis Hopper) winning the very cool Independent Firecracker Award. Recognized worldwide for his poetry, he was invited to the International Poetry Festivals in Genoa, Italy and Mexico and honored for his Bukowski poetry style. He was Guest of Honor at the 2010 Crossing Border Festival in the Netherlands. The Complete Poetic Works of Michael Madsen Vol. I 1995-2005 (13 Hands Publications) is an international bestseller chronicling a decade of his poetry dating to 2005. Signs of Life (13 Hands Publications) was dedicated to Chris Penn and was his first-ever book of photography. American Badass (Hands Publications) was released in 2009 and he dedicated it to the memory of David Carradine, his friend and Kill Bill co-star. Last year Michael served as President of the first Champs-Elysees Film Festival honoring Harvey Weinstein and recently launched a clothing line called Badass Clothing by Michael Madsen (what a surprise!). Rumor has it that he is set to appear in Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. HURRY HURRY we are in Michael Madsen withdrawal. The beautiful Javier Bardem has every award ever made (Oscar, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award, BAFTA, Goya, two European Film Awards, Best Actor at

ness that only he can offer a riveted audience. Born in Wisconsin to a large family (seven children) he studied drama at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, then headed to New York, and was on his way to becoming one of the most recognizable actors on planet earth. Over the years we have come to expect the most villainous characters ever conceived from Willem, and he doesn’t disappoint. Sexy? TOTALLY. One could say he carries a boy-next-door-look that captivates us with the thought that any minute he will turn into Dracula, and what a Dracula he makes. Even when he is trying his hardest to go legit as a somewhat normal detective in American Psycho, his past dictates that we watch with care for any sign that a demon will emerge. Some actors endear themselves to their audience. Willem was born to captivate us with his talent for an evilness that is mesmerizing. And nobody does it better than he does.

Although he could have easily gone for the cool to the touch roles, he went out of his way to make sure his good looks didn’t interfere with his ability to get ugly and down and dirty. Javier is on our radar forever. Film, theater, voice… is there anything Willem Dafoe can’t do? NOPE. And that includes playing the devil in a MercedesBenz commercial for the Super Bowl. The leg-long list of Willem’s on screen credentials is enough to make any actor blush. Platoon, Affliction, Off Limits, To Live and Die in LA, Born on the Fourth of July, The English Patient, The Last Temptation of Christ, Spider-Man, The Aviator and a million more. In addition to acting gigs, Willem is a founding member of The Wooster Group, a the New York based experimental theatre collective where he created and performed in all the group's work. Outrageously talented, he seems best suited for psychotic-oriented roles in which he is scarier than hell. His famously recognizable gravely voice only adds to the fear he eludes in roles that produce electrifying performances that have generated several award nominations. Certainly, he can pull off everyday Joe gigs, but what we love best is the way Willem makes us quake in our shoes from a dark-

With the baddest looks any bad boy could have, and a deafening charm that can overtake about any woman alive, few females could understand why Mickey Rourke abandoned US— his desperate fans—to take up a sport like professional boxing. But he did. And he was damn good at it with 20 wins, 17 by knockout. Unfortunately, boxing took a toll on his body and health, not to mention his once gorgeous face that began to bare some significant scars from the brutal sport. Nevertheless, the magnetic, engaging, sexy and over the top “Mickey” that got our attention back in the day still smolders when the guy gets in front of a camera. His performance in The Wrestler was intense and captivating. Every minute on camera he had our attention. Born in New York, from an early age he concentrated on sports — one in particular was boxing where at age 12, he won his first match. An actor and screenwriter, Mickey’s leading man roles brought him critical praise and a worldwide fan base following his every move. Long before 50 Shades of Gray was 9½ Weeks and to this day, nobody who saw that film will ever forget the undercurrent of raw sexiness and vulnerability the film invoked at the hands of an actor who made us a little uncomfortable with the ease in which he played the role. From films such as Body Heat, The Pope of Greenwich Village, Year of the Dragon, Barfly, Angel Heart, Man

on Fire, Iron Man 2, The Expendibles, Once Upon a Time in Mexico and The Rainmaker plus about a million others, came his Superfly leading role in Sin City—a film he made come alive and which brought Mickey a multitude of awards AND our continued and undying affection that FOREVER he will be one of the sexiest men ever created. A true Angeleno, James Brolin was born in Santa Monica, California, but raised on a ranch away from the lure of Hollywood where his father James Brolin made a living as an actor. His parents divorced when he was 16, and later his father married singer/actress Barbra Streisand. During high school the acting bug hit after James took an improv acting class AND a star was born that began with guest spots on television including the mega hit 21 Jump Street. Dashing good looks, a wickedly sexy smile and a smoldering chip on his shoulder attitude have put this amazing actor front row and center in some of our favorite films such as Men In Black 3, True Grit, an outstanding and captivating performance in W (in which its director Oliver Stone readily admits he hounded James to take the lead role), and the unforgettable thriller No Country For Old Men. Before big screen film roles took over, James appeared on stage and television most notably in the ABC Western series, The Young Riders — and what a sexy cowboy he made. One would think his best roles would coincide with his GQ look, but as time rolls on we come to see the power of his performances in dark thrillers the likes of Planet Terror and Quentin Tarentino/Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse, Oliver Stone’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and American Gangster. Although he certainly deserves and has earned the right to be in the driver’s seat, it’s apparent that James is more interested in the role than what status he has on the credit list. With tons of nominations and awards to his credit, there is one thing for sure—this guy is a keeper. Talented, formidable, and able to reach new heights with every role he brings to life. He is guy we can’t get enough of. l

A Winter Wonderland of Makeup Do’s & Don’ts By Celebrity Makeup Artist Suzanne D. LIPSTICK HIGHLIGHTS WINTER TO SPRING A red lip is the highlight of this winter to spring season. Playing with different shades to compliment your skin tone, a range of soft, pinkish reds to a bold, classic to a luscious black cherry, reds whirled their way in loud and proud. Being that this color creates its own statement, keep the cheeks and eyes simple. Blush your cheeks with a more neutral tone. You can also try using an apricot or a light pink to add a hint of color. Both are a nice compliment. My Tip For Playing With Reds: Work backwards this season. You typically save the darker looks for the evening, right? Have fun with it! Try using a darker red during the day and a pinkish red for your evening dinner.

Blues And Greens For Eyes For the eyes, blues and greens have been a big hit this winter and made quite the impression on the runways of New York Fashion Week. Apply either color along the lash line and give it a good smudge, apply to just the outer corner of the eyes or if you want to really have fun, apply all over the eyelid and top it with a shimmery eggshell or

Megan Fox

frosty white under the brow. For those of you with brown eyes, an emerald or a lime green pairs beautifully and gives your brown a vibrant pop. Those with blue and blue-grey eyes can try a deep, rich, royal blue. Try adding a baby blue shimmer to the inner corners of the eyes for a little extra dimension. For my green and hazel lookers, play with a bold, bright green. That would really exaggerate your color. You can pair this with a red, coral, pink or nude lip.

Less Color Can Also Be Glam IT’S UP TO YOU! For those of you that prefer a less colorful approach, another look this season is, well, you! A bare face is another top choice. (Does that ever go out of style?!) A flawless application with gently kissed cheeks, light shadows on the eyes paired with a slim, black eyeliner and nude lips is always a winner. The highlight of this look is the brows. Yes, ladies. Hello Audrey Hepburn! Use an angle brush with a powder (there are eyebrow pallets but if you don’t have one, just use an eye shadow) or pencil and swipe on a color matching your hair. Fill in a smooth clean line along the bottom of the brow, fill in throughout the brow, then define a line along the top. The fun part with this is the shape. You can give yourself a more pointed arch once you hit your peak or smooth it over for a softer arch. Start by filling in your actual brow then add another swipe along

the top to make them appear thicker. Play with it until you reach a thickness you like. With such fun and vibrant styles along with one’s own natural beauty, the best part is a little mixing and matching. The Secret To Keeping Your Lips Soft and Sexy during Wintertime! Here is a fabulous lip-saving, homemade moisturizer that you read here first!

Soft lips are desirable and let’s be honest, dry lips are uncomfortable. Overexposure to the sun or the cold, dry winter winds can cause lips to become chapped from loss of natural oils in the lips’ skin. It is important to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. It’s easy to forget to this when the cloudy skies are shades of grey and you are bundled up to stay warm. The last thing on your mind is a nice glass of ice water. Try drinking room temperature water, and throw a lemon wedge in for flavor. The bottom line is that the winter months can be harsh on your lips’ sensitive skin and we

have to be proactive if we want kissable lips! A perfect lip moisturizing gloss is always a must. As long as you have a clear moisturizer for your lips, you can always wear whatever lipstick color you want. So, do not worry about having to change your makeup routine. This is just one additional step in your skincare regiment. It is actually quite simple and fun to make your own lip moisturizer with natural ingredients that are amazing for your lips’ delicate skin. Aloe Vera is naturally soothing, while Vaseline and Coconut oil serve to retain moisture and hydrate. This is key, because we want sexy, smooth lips during the winter months, too. Matte lipsticks are en vogue right now, and matte lipstick shows every imperfection. Unlike gloss that hits the lights, there is no glossy effect to distract from chapped lips. 30 // bhtmag.com //

Sweet almond oil is an excellent moisturizer and emollient. These are important characteristics to apply to the state of your lips. We all want supple, soft lips, so don’t be stingy with the sweet almond oil! For this lasting beauty recipe, you will need a small jar to store your lip balm. Such containers are in the travel section at most drugstores and in the body section of health food markets. Whereas the Soft Lips moisturizer can be applied day and night, lip balm is something you will want to keep in your purse and apply as much as you’d like. This is an easy and effective lip balm you can make at home with natural ingredients.

Nothing STOPS The Signs of Aging like Dermal Fillers THE ULTIMATE GUIDE: WHICH FILLERS WORK BEST ON SPECIFIC AREAS OF THE FACE With having injected more than 10,000 syringes of dermal over the years and after more than 12 years working as a PA along side some of LA’s most noted plastic surgeons, dermatologists and anti-aging doctors, Aaron Furey’s skillful hand and eye for detail keeps some of Hollywood’s biggest stars red carpet gorgeous. Here’s his take on dermal fillers that can keep you looking ageless! “It’s my goal to give patients a positive experience; deliver effective medical care and natural, beautiful, undetectable cosmetic results.” — Aaron Furey, PA

BHT: Which filler is best for which area on the face? AF: Fillers are like paint, each has different attributes and can be manipulated differently. Ultimately, results depend on the skill of the person injecting the filler and their experience with that specific product. What is magic in one person’s hands is disaster in another's. You pay for the skill of the “injector” more than the product itself. • HLA (Hyaluronic Acid) Fillers—Juvederm, Perlane, Restylane: Better suited for around the mouth and in the lips because they are clear and have a softer look. • Calcium-based filler like Radiesse: Best for deep injections to restore areas like the upper cheeks, and temples. • PLLA (poly-L-lactic acid) filler like Sculptra: Best to soften areas of large volume loss like the mid-cheek. • Permanent fillers: Should be approached with extreme caution. The lure of not having to come back every 6-12 months can be offset by a lifetime of regret. BHT: Any way to avoid the “frozen” deer in the headlight/loss of expression look Botox can create? AF: When using "relaxers" Botox or Dysport in the forehead/eye area, there’s a fine line between softening and paralyzing or "freezing" the area. Patient expectations or demands is an issue. Some want to erase all wrinkles/ lines because it looks better in “photos” forgetting the other 99.9% of the time their face is “in motion.” Success for fillers depends on the “injector” setting realistic expectations and boundaries for patients. I don’t do "frozen"... it looks bad, and I consider it a disservice to patients.

BHT: What is the difference between fillers and fat injections? Don't they achieve the same results? AF: One strength of filler over fat is predictability. Initially, FAT needs to be overfilled because the body reabsorbs up to 50% during the healing phase. Fat taken from a particular area (ie., abdomen) behaves like abdominal fat while in the face. If major weight loss/gain is experienced, transplanted fat may not expand/shrink at the same rate as surrounding tissue. It’s clear what course a filler takes over it's lifespan. BHT: Aging/loss of fat causes hollowness under the eyes. Which filler is better for that “under eye” area? AF: Underneath the eyes is a very sensitive area to treat, but also one of the most important since it's where most people focus when they look at you. I attribute most of the poor results we see to three strategic causes: 1. Filler injected too close to the surface of the skin. The thinnest skin on the body is located beneath the eye. If filler is injected too superficially, inconsistency shows. 2. Filler injected above the tear trough (the “little valley” under the eyes. There’s no way to erase dark circles/puffiness under the eyes with filler. We can make them appear to go away by smoothing the transition from the under eye area to upper cheek area. Filler extending too close to the tear trough causes fluid to back up making puffiness worse. This could improve as filler is absorbed by the body. 3. Use of HLA fillers too close to the eye. Hyaluronic acid loves water attracting many times it's own weight in water, and holding onto it aggressively. Some patients are prone to congestion under the eye, not knowing it's an issue. If the under eye area gets congested due to hayfever, water retention or sleeping in an odd position, HLA grabs onto extra water in that area swelling up, causing lumpiness or puffiness possibly worse in the morning, improving as the day passes. I use Radiesse under the eyes, and inject mostly deep under the muscle for a natural look in restoring volume to support facial tissues. Radiesse is difficult to master, so the practitioner's skill is key for success. BHT: Some upper lip areas with wrinkles have filler injected that makes the area look unnatural. What's the answer? AF: Your face is a living, breathing, animated, multi-dimensional canvas. A practitioner’s success with filler requires skill, experience and

patience. Smoker's lines are “wrinkles” caused by repetitive movement and volume loss. A new HLA filler BELOTERO targets fine lines/wrinkles and is appropriate if volume loss is not an issue. For crinkling of the lip, volume restoration is the answer. Over-filling lips or the surrounding lip area is poor practitioner technique and/or lack of an artistic eye. BHT: Is there is a way to get a "face lift" using filler? AF: YES, the "liquid face lift". Generally, fillers "fill" and surgery lifts "lift" BUT advances in non-surgical tightening like ULTHERA, never-before-seen-results are achieved using a combination of both. When done correctly restoring volume loss can help lift to some extent. Technique involves fillers in areas where volume is lost. The downside is the face can become “overfilled” weighing skin down. Result is an unnatural look of unwanted bulk. Best results are achieved using filler for each part of the face. A photo of the patient when they felt their face looked it's best helps a practitioner achieve a more youthful look. I work closely with patients on details to achieve a natural, undetectable look and tell them BEFORE we begin what we can or can't achieve using fillers. If something does not look good, I don't do it. l Currently named "Top Injector 2012 Southern California" by Aesthetic Everything website, Aaron Furey, PA, BS, trained at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. He hands-on trained extensively in the use of Sculptra, Radiesse, Juvederm, Belatero, Restylane, Perlane, Artefill and Botox. Questions & Answers About Our Environment

Written By Roddy Scheer and Doug Moss

Dear EarthTalk: Has recycling lived up to its promise to reduce waste and pollution, save energy and provide jobs in our ailing economy? — Ian Atkinson, New York, NY

Dear EarthTalk: What are the new nutrition standards for school lunches that have some students boycotting their cafeterias and discarding the food? — Melissa Makowsky, Trenton, NJ

Americans still don’t recycle as much as they could. Nonetheless, the practice is considered a huge success given that it keeps about a third of the solid waste we generate out of our quickly filling landfills and saves natural resources while generating much-needed revenue for struggling municipal governments. Recycling also helps us keep our carbon footprints down. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that recycling one ton of aluminum cans conserves more than 1,665 gallons of gasoline. That doesn’t mean the progression from virtually no recycling just 40 years ago to today’s U.S. average of 33.8% has been smooth. Materials, especially mixed plastics, have proven difficult and/or expensive to recycle, causing skeptics to question the overall value proposition. But well managed recycling systems that focus on profitable resources like glass, paper and metals have been a big success. And why wouldn’t they be, when recycling uses as little as five percent of the energy required for virgin production of materials such as aluminum? Sara Brown of Presidio Graduate School says while recycling has gained great momentum over the last two decades, it still hasn’t realized its potential. “Unfortunately, recycling pick-up services are not cheap and are viewed as a redundant service; extra trucks mean extra cost. On top of that, single stream recycling requires investment in technology to sort the loads efficiently,” she says. “Trash, on the other hand, is far more indiscriminate because everything just goes to one place—the landfill.”

Indeed, some 31 million American kids participating in the federally supported National School Lunch Program have been getting more whole grains, beans, fruits and vegetables in their diets—whether they like it or not. The change is due to new school meal standards unveiled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) last January, per the order of 2010’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. The new standards are based on the Institute of Medicine’s science-based recommendations, and are the first upgrade to nutritional standards for school meals since 1995 when low—and no-fat foods were all the rage. The non-profit Environmental Working Group (EWG) believes the new standards represent an important milestone in efforts to improve the dietary habits and health of increasingly obese American kids. “Schools’ misguided reliance on processed foods for speedy, low-labor cost production, industry’s $1.6 billion in child-targeted advertising and a lack of faith in our children’s dietary curiosity [have] created a generation of ‘picky eaters’ with dull palates,” reports the group. “With nearly 17 percent of America’s children now clinically obese, and a staggering 32 percent overweight, the time is long past to address the unhealthy food environments our children live in.” The new standards limit calories per meal to 850 for high school meals, 700 for middle school and 650 for elementary and more than double the mandated minimum servings of fruits and vegetables while reducing the sodium, saturated fats and trans fats in school kids’ diets. Whole-grain foods, beans and dark green and orange vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, carrots and sweet potatoes have replaced things like pizza and French fries as staple items in schools that follow the program. Of course, not everybody likes the changes. Lunch strikes, Facebook protest pages, Twitter campaigns, YouTube parody videos and other means have been utilized coast-to-coast to voice opposition to the healthier meals. Some affected cafeterias blame the new smaller portions and healthier fare for causing as much as a 70% drop-off in school lunch program participation since the new standards took effect. Psychologists understand that kids may not come around to new foods right away, but will eventually eat them—so the federal government and most participating schools are sticking to their guns. And the USDA says that if a school “encounters significant hardships employing the new calorie requirements, we stand ready to work with them quickly and effectively to remedy the situation with additional flexibilities.” The benefits of the new standards far outweigh the costs. “School meals can help children develop healthy eating habits—or they can prime them for a life of poor health and unnecessary suffering,” says EWG. EWG lauds the new standards for significantly expanding access to and appreciation of nourishing food. Whether they can shift eating norms across the country remains to be seen, but regardless millions of American kids will likely now get their healthiest meals of the day on a tray in their school cafeterias.

Biologists consider the bird an indicator of wider ecosystem health; if its population numbers are healthy, local ecosystems are likely thriving. Brown says that the availability of curbside recycling programs varies throughout the country, as does their success. An example: New York City was a pioneer in recycling, but when the city became strapped for cash, recycling rates fell precipitously to just 15 percent and have not recovered. “New York City officials claim it is more expensive to recycle than to send trash to landfills and incinerators for disposal, and that they have to weigh those costs against environmental goals.” On the other end of the spectrum is San Francisco, which has steadily increased its recycling and composting and is now up to over 77%. Even more incredibly, the city is aiming for zero waste by 2020. Brown lauds San Francisco for structuring its recycling program to promote the desired behavior. “Curbside fees are charged on a ‘pay as you throw’ basis for trash, while recycling and compost are free, creating a financial incentive for following the law and sorting your waste.” Brown adds that programs like San Francisco’s prove that recycling can be economically viable besides being good for the planet. Brown acknowledges we’ve come a long way with recycling, but there is still great potential to do more. A November 2011 report entitled “More Jobs, Less Pollution” by a coalition of groups including the BlueGreen Alliance, the Natural Resources Defense Council and Recycling Works! advocates the U.S. government mandate diverting 75% of our waste coast-to-coast by 2030. The result would be 1.5 million new jobs as well as significant pollution reduction and savings in water and other resources. WATCH OUT! Environmental Toxins Are Everywhere By Sharyn Wynters

You’ve heard the expression, “You are what you eat.” And it’s true that what we put into our bodies has an influence on our health, but it’s equally true that what we surround ourselves with impacts our health. One of the biggest discoveries of my life was tthat my personal environment had a huge impact on my health. And by “my environment,” I’m referring to everything in, on, and around my body. In my 20s, I was forced to look at the influence of the environment because my health depended on it. When the medical profession ran out of answers, I began my search for something that would bring me out of a serious and debilitating illness. When I changed the things I put in, on and around my body, I GOT BETTER! Whether we realize it or not toxins affect our level of energy, ability to focus/concentrate, ability to resist illness, emotional balance and more. How long we live and the quality of our lives depends, on the toxins we are exposed to every day. BUT TOXINS ARE EVERYWHERE! Only when we understand the immensity of the problem can we begin to make choices and changes that will restore balance to our bodies and to the body of this planet. Today, we have diseases unheard of 75 years ago —the same period of time when chemicals and pesticides took on a major role in manufacturing and agriculture –the same period of time that processed and refined foods with artificial ingredients crept in our food supply. Eliminating toxins saved my life and it can save or enhance yours. These are the different areas of concern we are talking about when we discuss “toxins in the environment.”

AIR: We know the air in our cities is lower in oxygen because of auto and factory emissions and pollution causes respiratory problems. But what about the air in our homes? Every time we buy new carpet, refinish a wood floor, paint a room, use chemical cleaners, or bring home drycleaning... we release volatile organic compounds into the air that build in our lungs. Those with asthma or allergies and

the rest of us are no better off in a home environment than on the street during an air pollution alert!

rupters and ingredients that cause reproductive disorders, neurological problems, ADHD, headaches and skin disorders.

Home Construction Products: Who thinks about formaldehyde in treated lumber and insulation when they build a home? Who thinks about mold inhibitors in wallpaper and adhesives? Who thinks about fluorescent lights contributing to anxiety and macular degeneration? They are all toxins.

Food: We have pesticides, artificial flavor coloring, genetic modification, radiation, preservatives, sweeteners—all endanger the quality of each meal we eat and pollute our inner environment on a daily basis.

ble toxin that affects all of us in the modern world? Anyone who lives in a home with electricity is exposed. Those who regularly use cell phones are exposed. Anyone who uses a microwave or lives near high voltage power lines, cell phone towers, etc. is exposed. You can’t get away from it but you can protect yourself if you know how. Environmental toxins are a pervasive problem. If there were only one or two things to worry about it wouldn’t be so difficult, but there are hundreds of environmental toxins with the potential to affect your health. Years ago, my lifestyle completely changed. After my recovery, I continued to maintain an environment as free of toxins as possible. It has been one of the best decisions that I ever made. Now I am committed to educating and helping others have the opportunity to make the changes that will go a long way to keeping them healthy.

How To Make It In Business HARVEY MACKAY

New York Times Best Selling Author “Swim With The Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive” Good leaders use their power to implement ideas that workers bring forth, and then are quick to give credit to the person who had the idea. Then comes the action that really sets good leaders apart. They are willing to accept the blame and criticism when mistakes are made and don’t abandon their employees.

Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said, “Fail to honor people, they fail to honor you. But of a good leader, who talks little, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will all say, ‘We did this ourselves.’” He made that observation over 2000 years ago. Some things never change.

Good leaders really listen to the people who work for them. Good leaders pay attention to what people are telling them and take it very seriously.

Good Leaders Bring Out The Best In Employees It’s an election year, and one of the great privileges we have in America is selecting our leaders. While we have widely varied opinions of who should win, the fundamental characteristics of good leadership remain constant. A sociology professor from one of the country's major universities spent his life studying leadership by tracing the careers of 5,000 former students. When he was asked how you spot a leader he said, “I have come to the conclusion that the only way one can determine a leader is to look at the person and see if anyone is following.” Leadership is a difficult skill to measure. But it is certainly easy to determine when leadership is not present in an organization. In four years of executive seminars conducted by Santa Clara University and the Tom Peters Group/Learning Systems, more than 5,200 senior managers were asked to describe the characteristics they most admire in a leader. Here are the top 10 characteristics, as reported in Management Review magazine: honest, competent, forward-looking, inspiring, intelligent, fair-minded, broad-minded, courageous, straightforward and imaginative. Three of these characteristics are particularly significant in my opinion: forward-looking, inspiring and courageous. All of the others are necessary ingredients not only for an effective leader, but also for every employee.

Good leaders use their power to implement ideas that workers bring forth, and then are quick to give credit to the person who had the idea. Then comes the action that really sets good leaders apart. They are willing to accept the blame and criticism when mistakes are made and don’t abandon their employees. Warren Bennis spent much of his life researching leadership and has written several books on the subject of what makes leaders. Warren is a Distinguished Professor of Business Administration and the founding chairman of The Leadership Institute at the University of Southern California, which I had the honor of serving on the board. In 2007, Business Week magazine called him one of the ten business school professors who have had the greatest influence on business thinking. Bennis traveled around the country spending time with ninety of the most effective and successful leaders in the nation – 60 from corporations and 30 from the public sector. His goal was to find these leaders’ common traits. At first, he had trouble pinpointing any common traits, for the leaders were more diverse than he had expected. But he later wrote: “I was finally able to come to conclusions, of which perhaps the most important is the distinction between leaders and managers. Leaders are people who do the right thing; managers are people who do things right. Both roles are crucial, but they differ profoundly. I often observe people in top positions doing the wrong thing well,” he wrote in his book, “Why Leaders Can't Lead.” I tend to think of the differences between leaders and managers as the difference between those who master the context within which they operate and those who surrender to it. There are other differ-

ences, as well, and they are enormous and crucial. Bennis details them in his book, “On Becoming A Leader,” and they include:

• • • •

The manager administers; the leader innovates. The manager is a copy; the leader is an original. The manager maintains; the leader develops. The manager focuses on systems and structure; the leader focuses on people. • The manager relies on control; the leader inspires trust. • The manager has a short-range view; the leader has a long-range perspective. • The manager asks how and when; the leader asks what and why. • The manager has his eye always on the bottom line; the leader has his eye on the horizon. • The manager imitates; the leader originates. • The manager accepts the status quo; the leader challenges it. • The manager is the classic good soldier; the leader is his own person.

Mackay’s Moral: Good leaders develop more than good employees, they develop more good leaders. l // bhtmag.com // 39

The list of elite designers who celebrities choose to walk the red carpet with is long, and some of our fantasy favorites as well are: Yves Saint Laurent, Herve Leger, Carolina Herrera, Badgley Mischka, Nanette Lepore, Whitney Port, Gwen Stefani (L.A.M.B), Balmain, Christopher Bailey (Burberry), John Varvatos, Michael Kors, Oleg Cassini, Diane von Furstenberg, Narciso Rodriguez, Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney, L'Wren Scott, Victoria Beckham, Chloë Sevigny, Kate & Laura Mulleavy (Rodarte), Roland Mouret, Azzedine Alaïa and so many others. Do You Use

FOOD To Cope?

WHY DO WE EAT ? Most of us eat because we are physically hungry, but some of us eat because we are emotionally hungry. When we are physically hungry, food satisfies our need generally at breakfast, later at lunch and in the evening at dinner. Once we have eaten because we are physically hungry, the urge to eat goes away and we move on to other things.

EMOTIONAL HUNGER When we are emotionally hungry, no amount of food can satisfy us because it’s not a “burger” we crave. It’s something else. Emotional hunger is about feelings. When we are emotional hungry we may be misunderstood, hurt, angry, depressed or stressed. When we feel misunderstood food is not going to help, but feeling heard may. When we are angry, a tub of ice cream won’t fix the problem, but a straightforward conversation may. You can end emotional eating by differentiating physical hunger from emotional hunger addressing each appropriately. Eat when you are physically hungry and deal with your emotions when you are emotionally hungry.

Ahead With Horses AHEAD With Horses Inc, California's #1 Center for Developmental Therapeutic Vaulting is a very worthy charitable cause in need of support, so they may continue to work with physically disabled children. From financial gifts to horse treats to office and veterinary supplies, donations of all types are currently needed and just as important— volunteers are needed and are welcome to participate in the instruction of children, the grooming and training of the horses and helping to care for the Shadow Hills, California property where the charity ranch is located. AHEAD stands for Accelerated Habilitation Education And Development. Services at the organization combine benefits of physical, occupational, speech, educational and recreational therapy. Founded in 1968, it helps hundreds of disabled children each year, providing participants with developmental therapy, education and recreation through horses.

Do you turn to food when you feel sad, overwhelmed or angry? Are you unhappy with your physical appearance and tired of fighting with your body and your weight? Millions of Americans struggle with weight and food issues because they eat for emotional reasons. Emotional overeating can stop, and you can be restored to health and peace of mind. 42 // bhtmag.com //

Step 1: Identify Your Personal Hunger Signals Each of us knows when we are hungry. Our bodies are programmed to identify hunger and get our attention. Identify your personal signals for hunger. For some it’s a growling in the stomach. For others tightness in the throat, a headache, light-headedness or lack of concentration. Find yours. Identify it. Befriend it. Knowing when you are physically hungry is your best weapon in overcoming emotional overeating. Step 2: Eat Without Distraction Once you have identified that you are physically hungry, the next step is to eat without distraction. The reason to eat without distraction is that it gets you back in touch with your body and its physical sensations. When you are in touch with your body, you will be able to distinguish the physical from the emotional. This is the key to finally overcoming emotional overeating. Step 3: Address the Real Needs – Feel your Feelings! But what if want to eat and you are not physically hungry? Then what do you do? You feel your feelings! If you want to eat when you are not physically hungry, you want to eat for emotional reasons. It is important to figure out the real need that requires addressing. If the real need isn’t food, then it must be something else. Perhaps you need a good cry, or you need someone to listen to you, or you need to release some anger. When emotional issues are dealt with directly they can be resolved, and the need to eat to cope with them goes away along with that stubborn excess weight.

5 Tips for Overcoming Emotional Overeating Below is a reference for overcoming your emotional eating. Study it. Practice it and you’ll conquer your problem once and for all. 1. Let yourself get hungry so you know what hungers feels like for you—that’s physical hunger. 2. When you are physically hungry, eat! 3. When you want to eat but are not feeling physical hunger, ask yourself: “What do I really want?”—that’s emotional hunger. 4. Identify ways to meet that real need. 5. Do one! Emotional overeating doesn’t need to take over your life. Once you can identify your true emotional needs and deal with them directly all arts of your life will work easier and better than ever before.
