In keeping with a line-up of legends appearing on campus for students and guests, The Los Angeles Film School hosted renowned rock guitarist Don Felder, formerly of the Eagles—one of the biggest bands of the 70s earning one of the best-selling albums of all time, Hotel California, a song Felder wrote and initially introduced as an instrumental to band member Don Henley. The private rooftop concert drew a packed crowd to enjoy Felder’s famous songs including, Hotel California, Tequila Sunrise and Take It Easy. Felder gave an introduction about his history, where he grew up and details explaining how he taught Tom Petty to play guitar! After speaking about his career, he opened the floor for questions. The excited crowd asked things such as what inspires him musically and what his personal favorite album is. He played his set, opening with Hotel California, and after the concert posed for pictures with guests, while signing books and CD's. Felder's bestselling book, Heaven and Hell: My Life in the Eagles (1974-2001) and his newly release album, Road To Forever were available for purchase after the show. It was during his young years that Felder got a glimpse at his future watching Elvis Presley live on The Ed Sullivan Show. At age 10, he got his first guitar and started a band at 15, The Continentals, in which another music icon was Mike Orman & Don Felder a member, Stephen Stills of Crosby, Stills & Nash. Members of the band quit, others joined and then the Eagles were born. After leaving the band, Felder focused on family and a solo career working with mega-artists like the Bee Gees on their sound tracks. Fans will never forget Felder’s contribution to an era of music that defined a generation and the excitement he generated at The Los Angeles Film School concert was a tribute to his decades long career. One of the more electrifying moments was watching Felder play his custom shop double-neck SG guitar; a sight that has spanned four decades. Founded in 1999, The Los Angeles Film School (LAFS) is located in the heart of Hollywood at the historic RCA Building at 6363 Sunset Boulevard and it’s one of the most successful, private educational facilities in the world. The building was a recording studio used by the likes of Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, and John Williams. Since the school's opening, stars like Oliver Stone, Quentin Tarentino, Samuel L. Jackson, Wes Craven, Martin Landau, Spike Lee, Nick Nolte, Billy Bob Thornton, Faye Dunaway and others have visited the award-winning school renowned for film, animation, audio and video game departments where leaders in the entertainment industry are on staff as teachers. Every day children are taken away from their low-income parents because parents can’t afford NOT to work and kids are left alone at home to fend for themselves.
The P.S. I Love You Foundation was started by Patricia Scelza-Jones in 1998 to help disadvantaged children get their lives on track. At first Patricia didn’t know which direction to follow, but that changed when she met an elderly woman named Millie at the medical company where they worked. Millie’s story is shared by thousands of low-income working women with children. Either they have to quit their jobs to stay home, live in poverty and raise their children. Or they go to work and leave the children at home alone to fend for themselves. Kids end up in the company of bad people who lead them astray; many drop out of school; others have trouble with the law. Millie’s story was different; she was a grandmother—not the mother of five children ages 2, 4, 5, 10 and 12. Their mother and other grandmother were in jail. Patricia found out if Millie didn’t quit her job and stay home with the children, they would be placed in foster care. To help she took the children on weekends so Millie could rest from the duties of a full time job, child rearing and housekeeping. She also contributed financially helping Millie with rent and provided food and clothing for the kids. Patricia asked her friends if they would help —and they did. And you can help too! The P.S. I Love You Foundation continues its efforts every day to reach at-risk youth offering enrichment programs to better their lives. Last month, students at the 59th Street

seats and beds; fit for a king, queen, rock star and YOU. This furniture belongs in your home, office, hide-a-way love nest; anywhere you live!! When you pause from the Disneyland of home furnishing before you; next question. Who is the brains behind this operation? Her name is Cindy Rocker and for 20 years, she entrepreneured her way to the top. From salesgirl at Fred Segal when she first arrived in LA from Miami and didn’t have a clue how to make a living. Then for years, selling wholesale furniture out of her house in the Valley and delivering it in her car with ahousekeeper. And a year ago destiny stepped in with a well-deserved move to a Sunset Plaza storefront showroom. Exactly where this superstar belongs. Cindy is smart, beautiful, and on fire with bedazzling charm. To outsiders it might seem Cindy is the luckiest girl on earth to have an amazing gig as owner of the coolest store in LA. Look closer; LUCK has little to do with it. This is about the journey of a hardworking woman who stayed committed and found the strength to keep going in the face of extreme and tragic family health struggles. It’s about a woman who jumped every hurdle thrown her way on the road to succes, and did it as a single mom of two. Her story isn’t unlike that of other single women/moms who find their only true BFF on the way up is determination not to give up. What’s in Cindy’s forecast? On the drawing board are new designs for the Home Shopping Channel and an affordable line especially designed for Costco. Not bad for a girl from Georgia who grew up on a ranch riding horses for fun...a perfect Hollywood match! T: How did you find this perfectly suited niche? CR: I put a room-a house together beyond what is needed. At the end of a project when I’m on my way out the door, if I see something that’s not perfect, I fix it. It’s not about money; it’s about making it gorgeous; a theme in my life. I make designs and decorate rooms that I want for myself. There is always a way to make something beautiful.
14 // bhtmag.com //
ST: Where did all this determination to succeed come from? CR: My parents. My mother was my best friend until she passed away. My father followed within weeks. I was raised to never to give up. Whatever it was, my mother said ”you can do it” and made me feel like I could conquer the world. After her funeral I went through my own health crisis. At times I didn’t think I could make it. But reflecting to my mother I thought: how sad if everything she taught me goes out the window if I give up. She is my guardian angel watching over me, and I want to make her proud. ST: What do you say to people who think your success is “luck”? CR: What it is…is hard work. I care about clients and want their homes to be beautiful. I asked one client how he liked what I had done in his home and he said, “Cindy I feel like I’ve arrived at success when I open my door. That’s how you make me feel.” I thought WOW. How nice to make someone feel so good. People see how hard I work; they respect and appreciate it. For that reason alone they say “YES” to me. Providing many choices for individual wants, Cindy also offers eco-environment/animal crueltyfree pieces, working with faux leather, fur and refurbished wood. Her glamorous showroom carries styles with animal prints, gold la’me and diamond tucked, bejeweled pieces, but she makes the same designs quite traditional with linen. “Fabric makes the difference in traditional, contemporary...I support clients in their desire to create their own perfect environment,” she says. ST: You’re a single mom (son is 20, daughter is 12) with a 24/7 job. How do you have time for family and a demanding work schedule? CR: Being divorced with children to take care of, I think the focus should be about the family working together to support the children and allow their lives to move forward as uninterrupted as possible. My ex-husband, his family and I have remained great friends and we all support each other and the children. It makes life, especially for my young daughter so great. I love them and they feel the same about me. Children can feel security in their lives, and also feel if there are negative vibes. When you are a busy, single mom you need all the help you can get, and you want your children to feel loved and cared about.
Cindy designs and manufactures furniture at her LA factory and offers lightening speed delivery. In addition to the showroom designs are many pieces not displayed, Cindy can make whatever you think up. Got a photo of something you saw and can’t live without? Bring it in and she will make your dream come true. She is a make-a-room-come-alive wizard. ST: So you want to take over the world with glam furniture? CR: Yes. I want to give everyone a piece of Hollywood in their home. Changing the look of one room, changes the atmosphere of a home. My furniture and accessories are conversation pieces, custom made for any décor. A home is a reflection of its owners. I work with clients to make certain they get what they desire to make their home their castle. l

A Man with Vision and on a Mission to Lower Risks and Improve Results of Cosmetic Surgery
David Sobel Marshall Thompson
Dr. A David Rahimi In a city like L.A. where everyone claims to be a “star” in their profession, it’s impossible to know who is The-Best-of-The-Best and who is a wannabe, especially in the antiaging/beauty industry. Each doctor claims to be more skilled than the next, and millions of anti-aging treatments promise miraculous results. Most are Zip. Nada. Nothing. My girl friends and I can stock a Rite Aid aisle with all the “miracle” creams we have bought that didn’t work... 16 // bhtmag.com //
How do we choose an anti-aging expert, dermatologist or cosmetic/plastic surgeon to take away the wrinkles, sags and fat making our lives miserable? We can’t rely on certificates lining a doctor’s wall; some aren’t authentic and others can be obtained attending weekend seminars and conferences to LISTEN and WATCH experts giving presentations on THEIR procedures and results—it’s not hands-on experience. Board Certification helps, but won’t guarantee that when a doctor puts a scapel in his/her hand the instinct is there to achieve an excellent result. Doubt my words? Go to SAKS or NEIMANS and people watch for an hour. It’s scary what so- called “experts” are doing to faces and bodies. Cosmetic and Cosmetic Surgery has turned into an assemblyline of doctors who don’t know or care what they are doing. Women walk around with distorted faces, lips and cheeks packed with so much filler and fat their faces look frozen. It’s an epidemic. Myself and every other woman in this city wants to look younger, but at what cost? What counts when it comes to a cosmetic/plastic surgeon is hands-on experience; a surgeon obsessed with perfection, an eye for detail and desire to keep a patient’s physical individuality intact. An excellent medical education and specialty training are a must, but it’s the dedication of a doctor to assess an individual’s needs and wants, then draw a reasonable line of expectation for a patient to be aware of that really counts. When a patient wants MORE or asks for a procedure a doctor feels ambivalent about doing, the answer
should be “NO-CAN-DO”—money can’t take the place of integrity when a person’s face or body is on the line. Patient results and time with a doctor to ask every question you can think of are essential. If something doesn’t feel right, it isn’t. If the price is too good to believe, it is. Bargain shopping for Cosmetic Surgery leads to a nightmare. You have one face and one body so put them in the hands of a doctor with a reputation for excellence. There is no Fountain Of Youth. There is only a surgeon who knows what he or she is doing—or NOT! I’ve known Dr. David Rahimi for three years. When I decided to do a “inside scoop” article on Cosmetic Surgery, Fillers and Lasers, I felt comfortable going to him for an honest, up front interview on anti-aging procedures. Dr. Rahimi has been in business for 15 years and...the guy is SMART. Fluent in three languages, he grew up in Germany and moved to the United States 28 years ago. His wife Neda, besides being beautiful and an amazing cook, is a pharmacist, something she put on hold to raise their three adorable children; Madelyn, Lauryn and Aaron. To say these kids (under age seven) are as smart as whips and outspoken beyond their years is an understatement. A few weeks ago, I had dinner at their beautiful home in little Holmby, and all three kids surrounded me at the table grilling me on every topic under the sun, showing me every toy they had collected since birth — AND how it worked! David, Neda, and the kids...a total package of cuteness to be sure.
“Some Cosmetic and Plastic Surgeons reach a level of success, where they feel it is acceptable to allow staff members to independently evaluate and treat their patients. I believe the doctor himself or herself should do the evaluation and be intimately involved in instituting every step of the treatment plan.” — Dr. David Rahimi Dr. David Rahimi is a rising star in the field of dermatology and cosmetic surgery. His surgical procedures and anti-aging treatments are touted by his patients as the latest and greatest. I must say a few of my friends and I have over the years found our way to his office for an array of anti-aging goodies, and weren’t disappointed. I can only speak for myself, but what I especially like is that Dr. Rahimi has a slow hand when it comes to fillers and truly feels LESS is MORE when the goal is to look rested, more youthful and natural—not DONE. In my opinion, the idea behind anti-aging, cosmetic/plastic surgery procedure to turn back the clock is for a patient to look younger—not fake and plastic. ST: What do you think sets you apart from other dermatology and cosmetic surgeons? RAHIMI: A crucial element of my practice and one I feel determines the excellent results that I achieve, and one which is very important and comforting to my patients is the fact that I do the procedures myself. Patients tell me all the time that in the past they went to dermatology and plastic surgery offices where sometimes they don’t even see the actual doctor they booked with. Approximately 60-70% of cosmetic doctors use PAs and nurse practitioners and the majority of them are very knowledgeable and professional. Nevertheless there are some dermatologists, cosmetic and plastic surgeons who get to a certain level of success and feel it is acceptable to allow staff members to independently evaluate and treat their patients. I believe the doctor himself or herself should do the evaluation and be intimately involved when it comes to instituting every step of the treatment plan. The array of treatments and procedures that Dr. Rahimi offers is substantial and many are frequently featured on shows such as Dr. Oz, The Doctors, Good Morning America, E News, Today, ABC Nightline and others. If you’re looking for face/body rejuvenation? Dr. Rahimi says these are the cream of the crop: Zeltiq Coolsculpting (freezing fat), TCA Peels, Jessner Peels, Fat Transfer with PRP and Stem Cells, Laser Liposuction (Cool-Lipo), Needling, Subcision, Punch Grafting, Erbium, CO2 Fractional Laser Resurfacing, Cooltouch Lasers, Diolite Laser, Dermabrasion, Saline injections, the Tuliplift, and of course fillers. However, Dr. Rahimi’s claim to fame are his non-surgical face and neck lifts; treatments for getting rid of acne and acne scars; and his antiaging/skin resurfacing laser treatments for people with all skin types and skin tones. He has personally
performed more than 100,000 laser treatments in the past 15 years; many on Asian, Hispanic, African American, Armenian and Middle Eastern cultures. For a person with pale white skin this news flash may not mean much. But for darker skin tones it means everything, otherwise the results can be disastrous permanent skin discoloring. Dr. Rahimi is a Double Board Certified Cosmetic Surgeon, Dermatologist, and the Clinical Director of Forever Young, Inc., an LA-based skin institute offering cutting-edge face and body treatments. He has an impressive patient roster that crisscrosses the country. A couple of years ago, he wrote a fascinating and informative book titled, Please Don’t Die Trying To Become Beautiful —it’s a terrific read for anyone contemplating a step into the arena of cosmetic surgery. He says the book is a truthful inside look at cosmetic surgery, and the use of general anesthesia in the operating room with regards to face and body rejuvenation. Dr. Rahimi is the first to say that some who read it might opt not to get surgery after reading about the risks, but he says that patients have to be realistic BEFORE they undergo the knife and proceed with a treatment they may later regret. He is adamant that cosmetic surgery is not for everyone, and many who go to him for a specific procedure, he turns away for various reasons. Maybe they are too young for what they want done, or have unrealistic expectations of what their results will be. Some he says are not mentally stable or physically healthy enough to consider cosmetic surgery. Either way he says, he follows his instincts because in the long run having a problem with a patient outweighs any benefits money brings. “I only do procedures I believe in and would do on my wife, or members of my family. I believe it’s my responsibility as a physician to help people make good, educated choices. During the initial consultation I discuss a treatment plan and just as important are the expectations that a patient has with regards to the result they want. Nothing about cosmetic and plastic surgery should be taken lightly." ST: You are very vocal and adamant about your dislike for using general anesthesia when it comes to cosmetic and plastic surgery. Why? DR: I don’t believe in general anesthesia and I don’t use it to put my patients to sleep during their procedures. Whenever you hear
horror stories about plastic surgery it’s always about the anesthesia. Local anesthesia and mild sedation are all that is needed for 90% of procedures done. Most patients opt for local anesthesia if more doctors explain why it’s better, safer and more cost effective. My book Please Don’t Die Trying To Become Beautiful is my stand advising a conservative approach in any Cosmetic Surgery. I practice what I preach. From day one, my philosophy on Cosmetic and Dermatology surgery has remained steady: The safety of my patients is my top priority. I’ve always promoted

a conservative approach to the procedures I do. Minimally invasive treatments can produce maximum results, and local anesthesia with mild sedation is all that is ever needed. Dozens of people in the U.S. die each year because of anesthesia-related complications brought on by cosmetic surgery. This has nothing to do with the age of a patient; 25-year-olds die having their noses done the same as 50 and 60 year-olds die having a facelift or breast reduction. Performing procedures under local anesthesia and mild sedation is safer, recovery is shorter and it’s less expensive and surgeons must be less aggressive so results are less drastic and more natural.
TREATING ETHNIC SKIN Laser and Skin Peels
National statistics tell us that soon 50% of the population of the United States will be non Caucasian. Middle Easterners, African Americans, Pacific Islanders, Latin Americans, Native Americans, Asians, East Indians...call America home. And while many from these cultures will never have cosmetic surgery, for others an interest to reverse father time will propel them to seek Cosmetic Surgery. Each race carries different skin problems, needs, wants and challenges—of which both good and bad results are determined by the color and texture of that person’s skin. AND... whether or not the doctor treating them knows what he or she is doing. This is not about “practice makes perfect” for a doctor trying to improve his game. This is serious business that can leave a patient disfigured for life.
Skin Peels • Hair Removal Microdermabrasion • Sagging Skin Skin Pigmentation Treatment Laser Resurfacing • Body Contouring Mole/Lesions Removal • Scar Revision
LASER
Treating ethnic skin is serious business. Many doctors won’t do it because the liability is too high. Permanent pigment discoloration and severe scaring makes for undesirable and irreversible results. Many plastic surgeons and dermatologists refuse to treat ethnic skin. ST: I’ve wanted to get laser a few times, but because of my Italian-brown skin color was told my options are limited. It seem only pale white-skin people get excellent results. RAHIMI: True if a person sees a doctor not skilled in treating ethnic skin, who is uncertain of what to do. I treat patients of all ethnic origins. Procedure is important BUT as important is the preparation work before a procedure. It’s not about a patient coming for a consultation and having laser that day. Treating ethnic skin requires dedication, skin preparation and monitoring to make sure the skin is ready for the treatment. I get excellent laser results because I don’t do a procedure until skin is 100% ready. Prior to a laser and peel, I have patients use 18 // bhtmag.com //
Retin-A and a bleaching creme. I do a test spot to see the progress, and tell patients it’s not a onetime treatment if they want an excellent result. It could take more than one treatment. I work slowly and gently, and my results are age-defying.
FACES DISTORTED BY TOO MUCH FILLER; ARE THERE ANY OPTIONS? ST: Wherever we look are distorted faces with too much filler or fat injections. Whose fault is this, the doctors or the patients? RAHIMI: Both are at fault. Patients can have unrealistic expectations and doctors don't spend time explaining what lasers and fillers are capable of achieving. I say NO to 20% of patients who ask for a procedure I feel is not right, or if they want more filler which will distort the face making it puffy. It’s heartbreaking sitting face to face with someone who had injections of Silicone or Bioalcamid and want it removed. These materials are heavier than normal tissue and eventually migrate down the face and body, almost act like cancer invading deeper tissues like muscle and fat. The body makes scar tissue or a capsule around the materials to isolate and control them, but scar tissue grows causing bumps called Granulomas which can be disfiguring and disturbing to live with. I tell patients NO permanent filler is safe; PERIOD. These fillers can be partly removed, but it takes many sessions and can involve downtime. Some permanent fillers can be suctioned out; others need to be excised and then the tissue repaired. Cortisone injections are a solution, but are often temporary. A “puffy face” is a doctor using filler or fat to fill in wrinkles, hide sagging skin and conceal hollowed areas. But it makes a face round, fat and flat. Laser resurfacing combined with other modalities tightens skin and rejuvenates the face without distorting it with too much filler and fat. I do facial rejuvenation without cutting or general anesthesia and get excellent, natural, effortless results. The idea is to look 15 younger not look like a different person. People have lost their uniqueness. Everyone now has the same round, flat face, and puffy distorted lips.
“If a doctor says... ‘one treatment’ lasts forever… RUN! Nothing lasts forever. You don’t want it to last forever. Our faces change and if you put something in your face that stays the same when everything else has changed it won’t look good. Patients want a younger version of themselves. They don’t want distorted faces that nobody recognizes.”
NON-INVASIVE PROCEDURE VS SURGERY
With more people seeking non-surgical antiaging treatments to turn back time, the assortment of ways to rejuvenate and restore the face and body are considerable. Some people need a little filler, laser or peel to get the job done, while others may need surgery. The more extensive the overhaul, the more serious side effects can occur and the more downtime is required. The good news is a cuttingedge facial procedure is making international headlines with unheard of results.
The Most Effective FDA Approved Anti-aging and Skin Rejuvenation Facial Procedure that Tones and Tightens Without Surgery or Downtime ULTHERAPY An “Uplift” not “Facelift”…
Get rid of age-related wrinkles and sagging skin from weight loss, childbirth, sun damage and smoking...
“In September, The Wall Street Journal did an article on non-surgical face rejuvenation modalities available. Several gadgets and machines include radio frequency, ultrasound, monopolar, biopolar and more. They discovered the most effective, non-surgical treatment to tighten the skin and rejuvenate the face, neck and eye area is Ultherapy, a treatment that when combined with a little filler and laser comes close to the results of an actual cutting facelift. The procedure takes about an hour and a half, and I do it under local sedation. Energy heats skin tissue using radio frequency or ultrasound energy and stimulates the growth of collagen—as opposed to a cutting facelift, peel or standard laser which is done on top layers of the skin and requires patients to stay under wraps and in hiding for days and weeks. Ultherapy works beneath the surface of the skin and after-effects if any, resemble a mild burn and maybe, but not always a little busing. Skin is tightened and restored to a youthful appearance from the inside-out. Energy goes under the skin to make collagen contract. People see immediate results and it just gets better and better within a six month period. I combine the benefits of many modalities to lift, refine and rejuvenate skin without using cutting surgery. Fractional Laser Resurfacing, Ultherpay, Micro Laser Liposuction, Fillers and Fat Transfers have the ability to make a person look 10-15 years younger in days, with results that last years. Dr. Rahimi received his medical degree with distinction from George Washington University School of Medicine; he did a residency in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center of New York and he completed a Fellowship training program by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Rahimi maintains strong beliefs that the realtionship between a patient and doctor must be based on trust, a high level of communication and the patient must feel he/she is in the hands of a doctor who
truly cares about his health and well-being above all. Incredibly, Dr. Rahimi routinely gives his patients his cell phone number to call him 24/7 with any concerns they have.
The LATEST and GREATEST... HANDS a dead give away to age
“I see women with faces tightened and plumped, but their hands are a dead give away to age. An entire section on my website is devoted to hand rejuvenation www.ForeverYoung.com. Women forget to apply sunscreen on the backs of their hands (and chest) which results in thinning skin, discoloration and a skeletal look. A combination of fat transfer with PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) lasers (Mixto, Cooltouch) gets rid of any brown spots that appear and also plumps skin.”
STRETCH MARKS
“There is no absolute effective way to treat stretch marks; PERIOD. I have tried creams and lasers and light sources. Nothing works. Early on when a stretch mark is red and itchy—it can be treated with Retin A to reduce its appearance. In my opinion no laser effectively removes stretch marks.”
ALTERNATIVE TO FULL-ON FACELIFT
“The Tuliplift facelift is a patented procedure safer and more effective than a traditional facelift. It includes tightening the neck, liposuction of jowls, tightening the muscle, removal of excess skin, and scars are inside the ear. The procedure is followed by laser to erase the scar and tighten the skin.”
FAT REMOVAL
“Laser liposuction is the Gold Standard for fat removal. Excess fatty tissue is removed; skin and underlying tissues are tightened with laser. Many patients with loose skin had abdominoplasty as the only option.
“In September... The Wall Street Journal did an article on non-surgical face rejuvenation modalities available. Several gadgets and machines include radio frequency, ultrasound, monopolar, biopolar and more. They discovered the most effective, non-surgical treatment to tighten the skin and rejuvenate the face, neck and eye area is Ultherapy.”
Today, we treat these patients with laser liposuction to restore a youthful look and it can be done under local anesthesia and mild oral sedation. I have not performed any cases with general anesthesia in more than 12 years. I think of myself as a pioneer... doing my procedures without general anesthesia before it gained such widespread acceptance.”
IS COSMETIC SURGERY FOR EVERYONE
“Cosmetic surgery is more acceptable, affordable and safer than ever before. Patients with a darker skin complexion can now also enjoy the benefits of Cosmetic Surgery. Newer lasers are safely used on Asian, Hispanic, and even African American skin (the Clear and Brilliant laser). Patients should be realistic and not look for perfection. The more aggressive the procedure; the greater the risk can be. Less is more and a natural result is always superior.”
A QUALIFIED SURGEON
“The biggest mistake is choosing the wrong doctor for the right procedure. A skilled Cosmetic/Plastic Surgeon can be great at Breast Augmentation but terrible at facelifts. Meet the doctor, ask questions; learn about downtime, recovery, expected results and choose the best doctor to do the treatment.” l Dr. David Rahimi 323-653-7700 FOREVER YOUNG, INC. www.foreveryoung.net “Please Don’t Die Trying To Be Beautiful” To Purchase Dr. Rahimi’s Book Visit: Amazon.com http://amzn.to/dhLxh1 // bhtmag.com // 19

A Doggie Runway Fashion Show Benefitting Canine Companion For Independence The Humane Society of the United States' H-Couture Fur-Free Fashion Show dazzled with designs from Marc Bouwer, John Bartlett, Charlotte Ronson, Kimberly Ovitz and Victoria Bartlett. Hosts were Paul Wesley and Torrey DeVitto (The Vampire Diaries) who brought the fashion and animal protection worlds out to support conscious living and compassion in fashion. “Anti-fur has been something I’ve been very passionate about for a very long time. We are not cavemen anymore; we don’t need it for warmth,” said Torrey. “There are faux alternatives that keep us just as warm, are as soft and beautiful. We are more than happy to take part in this great cause. That these designers are very successful and have really hip, cool clothing that doesn’t involve torturing and killing animals will make young people say, “oh wait a minute, I’d rather wear that, said Paul. Marc Bouwer’s gowns are worn by Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron, Halle Berry and Portia de Rossi. He said, “It was very important for me to do this benefit for The Humane Society. Fur belongs on animals, not on people. If I want the look and feel of leather or fur, I can duplicate it exactly with faux materials that look fabulous.” Designer John Bartlett said, “To me, compassion in fashion is very sexy and cruelty is a total turn-off. Everything I do is plant-based, which for me is very sexy, very exciting.” Proceeds went to The HSUS’ Fur-Free Campaign and Hollywood Outreach program which works with designers, retailers and fashion students to promote alternatives to animal fur. It exposed major retailers selling animal fur as faux and revealed domestic dog fur sold in the U.S. “We’re delighted our first major fashion event emphasized how cool and stylish fashion without cruelty can be. Why would anyone feel comfortable wearing clothing involving the suffering

Natural Beauty BEAUTY SECRET recipes You Can Make AT HOME
By Elizabeth TenHouten Exfoliation Doesn’t Always Require Harsh Scrubbing! Naturally we want to look young and radiant and there is undoubtedly a connection between beauty and health. With so many skincare products on the market it’s a challenge for even the most savvy beauty junkie to distinguish between chemical-laden products and those with natural ingredients. But there is a way to stop wondering what you are putting on your skin and that’s by making your own topical beauty recipes at home and it’s super fun! Natural, topical beauty treatments provide health benefits and skin-nutritional value like the featured recipes in this month’s column. It is easy and fun to stay healthy and beautiful and be your natural, beautiful self.
An important part of a woman’s beauty regime is exfoliation...
And it often gets forgotten. We know the importance of cleansing our faces and applying moisturizer (hopefully with a sunscreen ☺); as important is to exfoliate 1-2 times a week. Without proper exfoliation, an accumulation of dirt sits on the surface of skin clogging pores. That’s what blackheads are, and we don’t want blackheads, ladies! The advantages of skin-saving, natural ingredients are many. If you whip-up the Fruit Acid Exfoliator with apples, know that apples contain natural fruit acids, which exfoliate and slough off dead skin cells. I explain the skin health benefits of each ingredient in my homemade recipes. Honey is nature’s moisturizer, helping skin retain its natural moisture by adding hydration. Eucalyptus honey, specifically, is a highlyeffective antiseptic with antibacterial/antiinflammatory properties —valuable for a healthy, glowing complexion. It also has a pleasing aroma and provides a cool, refreshing effect, inducing mental calm. Eucalyptus honey can be found at your local

EarthTalk ® What is currently being done in the U.S. to ensure the wise use and safety of our nation’s groundwater? — Kevin Orr, Baton Rouge, LA Keeping fresh water safe and abundant is a challenge for all societies. In the United States, about half of the country’s drinking water comes from groundwater sources. Many rural areas derive all of their drinking water from groundwater, which also provides 40% of the irrigation needs of American farmers. While underground aquifers may at one point have seemed limitless, huge demands for water (especially in arid areas like the Southwest) means that groundwater reserves are precious and need to be carefully managed with conservation in mind. Also, groundwater is easily contaminated by any number of common man-made products such as gasoline, oil, road salts, pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals.

INGREDIENTS 1 organic apple, cored and quartered 1 tablespoon eucalyptus honey PREPARATION & APPLICATION Core and quarter an apple; discard all but the seedless slices; put in a blender and grind. Pour ground apple into a small bowl and add eucalyptus honey, or any honey. Stir mixture with a tongue depressor until it becomes silky/grainy. Apply to a clean face; leave for 15-20 minutes; rinse with warm water; follow with a splash of cool water to seal pores. Another of my favorite recipes in Natural Beauty is my Gentle Exfoliator because exfoliation isn’t about abrasive scrubbing of pores; ingredients do the trick! One ingredient is sour cream which contains a high value of lactic acid which functions as a gentle exfoliator removing dead skin cells as you cleanse. GENTLE EXFOLIATOR (Courtesy of Natural Beauty: Homemade Recipes for Radiant Skin & Hair, Hatherleigh Press/Random House 2013) INGREDIENTS 1 teaspoon almond oil 2 teaspoons coconut oil 1 tablespoon sour cream PREPARATION & APPLICATION Mix oil ingredients & sour cream until whipped, then gently apply to face; avoid eye area. Management of water supplies is decentralized; local/regional water authorities manage supplies for municipalities around the country; oversight comes via the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), mandated by the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act enacted in 1972. It addresses water pollution, requiring everyone, especially large water users including large industrial and agricultural operations to deal with water inflows and outflows in a responsible, non-polluting manner. The 1974’s Safe Drinking Water Act requires the EPA to set standards for drinking water quality that 150,000 public water entities across the country must meet. Third party laboratories provide detailed analyses to ensure that local supplies meet the EPA’s expectations. The laws work to keep groundwater supplies safe, but environmentalists want strengthened substantially in the face of drought-inducing global warming and other threats. Regulation and enforcement of industry/agriculture is protects limited groundwater supplies and consumers must help. The Groundwater Foundation, a Nebraska-non-profit educates people and inspires action to ensure sustainable, clean groundwater for future generations. They suggest taking short showers; shut off water while brushing teeth and shaving; run full loads of dishes and laundry; fix leaky faucets; water plants and lawn only when necessary. The group advocates recycling used motor oils; limit fertilizers/ pesticides on plants, lawns, gardens; reduce household chemical use; dispose leftover chemicals at hazardous waste collection sites (earth911.com), not down drains or gutters. Initiate a Source Water Protection process; locate local groundwater sources and identify ways to protect and conserve them. Download the Groundwater Foundation’s free Source Water Assessment and Protection Workshop Guide with information on source water protection strategies and where the Safe Drinking Water Act and Clean Water Act intersect. Guide funding was provided by the EPA’s Office of Groundwater and Drinking Water. Questions & Answers About Our Environment
Written By Roddy Scheer and Doug Moss What is the Burrowing Owl Conservation Network and why is it so important to put so much effort into saving one species? — Ginny Bateman, Portland, OR Western burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia) are tiny, long-legged members of the owl family, native to the Americas, preferring open landscapes so they can dig new holes or use existing ones (abandoned prairie dog, skunk or armadillo homes) to nest and rear their young. Unlike most other owl species, these small, charismatic birds are often seen out during daylight hours, but do their primary feeding at night, preferring a diet of small rodents and large insects. Once a common species in California and across North America, the Western burrowing owl has been a rare sight for three decades given its habitat loss and other environmental perils the bird faces. Biologists consider the bird an indicator of wider ecosystem health; if its population numbers are healthy, local ecosystems are likely thriving. But these days the bird is endangered in Canada and threatened in Mexico; it’s a state endangered species in Colorado and a “species of special concern” in Florida and in other western U.S. states and is listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN’s) international “Red List” of endangered and threatened species (albeit as a species of “Least Concern” in comparison with others in more dire straits). A group of dedicated birders, conservationists, biologists and concerned citizens in San Francisco’s East Bay came together to protect the dwindling burrowing owl populations locally, but ended up creating a movement that spans the entire North American continent. Their group, the Burrowing Owl Conservation Network (BOCN) believes that burrowing owls are vital to maintaining healthy, functioning ecosystems, and as such is working on several fronts to help protect habitat and reverse the animal’s population slide. First and foremost, BOCN works to con-

Teaching children and communities ways they can protect and improve the burrowing owl habitat is another important part of BOCN’s work. Other ways the group helps the owls is by advocating for legislation and policy changes that encourage conservation of habitat, networking with like-minded individuals and institutions, plus conducting field and laboratory research to increase understanding about how to help burrowing owls and create habitat conditions ideal for their survival. The fact that burrowing owl populations in other parts of the world are rebounding gives hope to BOCN and other wildlife advocates and environmentalists. These birds are common and widespread in Central and South America, where they inhabit fields and even sometimes parks in urban areas. Whether the birds can replicate their success in Latin America up north remains unknown. What you can do to help: learn about their behavior, biology and habitat needs of wild animals like the burrowing owl; develop respect for nature’s inhabitants and a lifelong willingness to protect them. Nothing beats witnessing burrowing owls go about their rounds. Seeing them in the wild is enough to convince anyone that they are worth fighting to protect. HEALTH & WELLNESS By Sharyn Wynters
DAILY GREEN DRINKS ARE GOOD FOR YOU! What Is A “REAL” Green Drink? Juicing green vegetables in your juicer offers the foods needed to feed the major systems in your body. But what if you don’t have time for juicing? I use Chlorophyll, instead of taking out the juicer... it’s easier and cheaper.
What Is Chlorophyll? It’s responsible for the green pigmentation in plants and considered the "blood of plant life"—containing lifegiving nutrients that are easily assimilated by the human body. Chlorophyll is what absorbs energy from the sun to facilitate photosynthesis in plants. It’s vital in plant metabolic functions such as growth and respiration.
What Does Chlorophyll Do? It's molecular structure is similar to the molecular structure of the human red blood cell: hemoglobin, except the central atom in chlorophyll is magnesium, while iron is central in human blood. It has the effect of iron; it’s a blood builder. Benefits of Chlorophyll were discovered many years ago the fields of science and research. Is Chlorophyll A Natural Deodorizer? Research proves it helps. Its benefits are listed on certain brands. Historical Uses Of Chlorophyll Nutrition and digestion; it helps regulate calcium levels in the blood; helps blood sugar problems; lubricates the iliocecal valve; increases iron in mother's milk and is excellent for use in a cleansing diet because it cleans the structure of the cells and its vital minerals build new cell life.
Cleansing And Healing Chlorophyll is a great cleanser for chronic conditions internally and externally. Disease-causing bacteria find it difficult to live in the presence of chlorophyll. New Windows 8 Tablets. These days it seems that everyone is interested in purchasing a Tablet to go along with their smart phones. No doubt, I'm a fan when it comes to Tablets, and one of my favorite new Tablets— and one I use on a daily basis—is the ASUS VivoTab with built in Windows 8. Windows 8 is the newest operating system released by Microsoft less than one month ago. This is a terrific Tablet because it is easy to use and is portable. This Tablet also has a battery that lasts almost as long as my new iPhone (on average 10.5 hours). Among the catchy perks of this Tablet is an option to disconnect the keyboard if you want and just carry the Tablet portion and use the touch screen. I recommend this Tablet for anyone on the go who needs a reliable computer. The display is absolutely crystal clear and the Tablet is ultrathin and conveniently lightweight.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Counter-Strike: Global Offensive was created and released from Valve. Valve has made and continues to make the best games I have ever played. The quality of the games are excellent. CS: GO is a team-based action FPS shooter. It's an awesome game that most players say is easy to learn BUT difficult to master. Thousands of gamers around the world are playing CS: GO because of its incredibly addicting gameplay and the awesome graphics. The Counter Stirke franchise first started 12 years ago with the release of Counter-Strike. Counter-Strike is by far one of the most played online action games in the world and it has dedicated members and fans (like me) who play constantly. The great thing about Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is that you can play it on PC or the console. It gives players a wide variety, and does not limit us to using just a PC. CS: GO was released on August 21, 2012, and thousands play this game at any given time day or night. I would rate CS: GO a 10/10—I just cant stop playing it myself and what I enjoy is this game is all about TEAM WORK. So if you hope to get lost in the intricate dynamics that makes this non-stop action game one of the best ever made... better make friends FAST because it takes a tight working crew to win. l

Connection in the Age of Social Media by Paul N. Weinberg In the late 1990s, my dating experiences in Los Angeles inspired my desire to write a book on intimacy and connection in personal relationships. I never could have imagined then how the world would change, and with the advent of social media, how relevant the subject would become…
A Wired World Fast forward to 2012. We live in a wired world – and a weird time. Not a day goes by that we don’t read an article about how social media and interrupt overload are having a detrimental effect on our personal relationships, rewiring our brains to look like those of cocaine addicts. It’s an age of unprecedented 24/7 connection, in which Facebook, email, text messaging and other forms of electronic communication have us instantly connected to anyone and everyone around us. And yet many of us are also experiencing a profound and pervasive sense of isolation and disconnectedness. We skate along the surface of our relationships, having swapped quantity for quality and frequency for depth. The explanation for this seeming contradiction of isolation and disconnectedness in a massively interconnected world is that most of us have never learned – or seem to have forgotten – how to connect or even what it means to connect on a fundamental level.
Connection in the age of social media is even more challenging when electronic communication – including not only emails and texts but posts, comments, likes and impromptu online chats – seduce us into believing that we are connecting more deeply than we really are. While these forms of communication certainly broaden our opportunities to connect and can help us feel more connected, they can also crowd out the more human, meaningful and multi-dimensional ways of interacting, and even create the illusion of intimacy when in fact we are still emotionally disconnected.
36 // bhtmag.com //
Connection in the age of social media is even more challenging when electronic communication – including not only emails and texts but posts, comments, likes and impromptu online chats – seduce us into believing that we are connecting more deeply than we really are. Social media is helping to create more connections between people – think of the people you know with several thousand friends on Facebook. But it is also weakening those connections, degrading their quality, and in the process, it is degrading our ability to maintain them. We are more connected and yet less accessible… We are more willing to broadcast the personal details of our lives and yet more guarded about revealing ourselves to those closest to us. We confuse our Facebook friends with our real friends and our social network with our social group… What’s been missing from our lives is intimacy, which is really just the deeper level of connection that most of us talk about wanting in our personal relationships, but struggle to find in our modern-day lives. Surprisingly, this applies not only to our personal relationships – those between romantic partners, with friends, and with family members – but also to many of our professional relationships as well. Intimacy is an age-old concept that is under assault and facing all sorts of modern challenges. It’s time to do something about it!
What Challenges Do You Face Take a look at your own life and consider what challenges you face in your personal relationships. Whether you’re a man or a woman, young or old, gay
or straight, in a friendship, family relationship, single, or dating, partnered, married or divorced… If you’d like to understand how emotional connection is the long-term glue that binds together your personal relationships… If you are more interested in the similarities between people – and their universal need for connection – rather than the differences… Then consider the following questions:
• Does something seem to be missing from your personal relationships, and you can’t quite put your finger on it? • Are you experiencing and having difficulty resolving conflict with your partner, a friend, or a family member? • Do you feel stuck in old, recurring patterns of relating that no longer work for you? • Do your relationships tend to skate along the surface, and you want to go deeper? • Would you like your personal relationships to change, but don’t know where to start? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, check out www.theifactor.com for further information about The I Factor, the antidote to modern times and the detrimental effect social media and interrupt overload are having on our personal relationships. See how The I Factor can help you make real and immediate changes on the road to improving your relationships – and your life. l Paul N. Weinberg is the co-author of The I Factor, an inspirational and aspirational book about connection in the age of social media. The I Factor was recently published to rave reviews and endorsements from some of today’s biggest celebrities, including Larry King, Jack Canfield, Marianne Williamson, and Sofia Vergara. By Dennis J. Freeman There’s a lot of chatter going on around the city of Los Angeles about who is KING of the hardwood. For now the answer is undisputed. With newly hired coach Mike D'Antoni now leading the way, the Los Angeles Lakers will continue to sit on the throne until someone knocks them off. The Los Angeles Clippers are hoping to be the team to do just that. But before Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, Lamar Odom and company can pull off the feat of the century, they will have to climb to the Lakers lofty standards. The Lakers have won more games than any team in NBA history. The Purple and Gold have collected 16 League Championships. The Pro Basketball Hall of Fame is laced with Lakers, including Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan and the great Jerry West. For the last 16 seasons, Lakers’ fans have had the great fortune of watching Kobe Bryant go from a spectacular hotshot rookie to one of the best players of all time. One day, when every- thing is said and done, Bryant may reach the pinnacle of being considered the greatest player to ever lace up a pair of sneakers in league history. But for now, he is focused on winning his sixth NBA world championship ring this season, which would put the Black Mamba on equal par with Michael Jordan. After the Lakers got bounced from the playoffs this past spring by new young guns of the NBA— Oklahoma City Thunder, Bryant is in a great position to get the elusive title. Thanks to the wheeling and dealing of Mitch Kupchak, Bryant and the Lakers are in a better place today than they were in the spring to win it all. Actually, the Lakers are suited up for another ticker-tape parade more than the reigning NBA champion Miami Heat, or other teams because of the power moves Kupchak magically pull off. Kupchak was able to land wunderkind point
guard Steve Nash, a future Hall of Famer. Kupchak got bolder and then completed an unthinkable deal with the Orlando Magic bringing Dwight Howard, the best center in the game-to the Lakers’ organization. Just when folks went to sleep on the Lakers thinking the 2008/ 2009 NBA champions were headed to a retirement home, Bryant and his teammates are now the biggest threat to upend LeBron James’ repeat title quest. The Lakers formed its own version of The Big 3, a reference to the Boston Celtics’ former trio of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett—
now referred to Heat players Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh and James. The buzz over Nash and Howard playing alongside Bryant and Pau Gasol circulated on the team’s media day and hundreds of reporters and photographers came to see the new look and the star-laden Lakers. Excitement grew in anticipation of Howard making his first live appearance as a Laker when he took the floor against the Sacramento Kings
nine days before the team’s regular season opener at the Staples Center versus the Dallas Mavericks. Howard’s first official bucket as a Laker came off a feed for a 200 dunk the first quarter. If a Clippers’ highlight-reel of Paul throwing it to the explosive Griffin and high-flying DeAndre Jordan is adequately dubbed “Lob City,” then the Lakers tossing the ball to Howard is a treat to watch. When the Lakers and Clippers go against each other expect fireworks. The Lakers may be the darlings of Los Angeles, but the Clippers are winning over hearts right and left with their lineup of stars. Paul, one of the best point guards in the league, nearly became a Laker last year...no longer news, but the addition of Paul and Chauncey Billups gives the Clippers fortitude and attitude. New pickups this season of Odom, Matt Barnes, steady Grant Hill and sharp-shooting Jamal Crawford gives the Clippers its deepest team in years. For years, the Clippers lounged in the NBA cellar—no more. This is a new Clippers team. They come to win and will give the Lakers a run for their money. There used to be talk that the Clippers were the Lakers little brothers... Well, little brothers have grown up! Historically, the Clippers couldn’t hold the Lakers’ clipboard. But, the Clippers aren’t looking for any history lessons. With Paul as their fearless leader, they don’t consider themselves as second fiddle to any team and plan to establish a rivalry with the team across the hall. At the end of the day, though, this is still the Lakers town. For it to change, the Clippers will have to grab a couple a couple of titles and come up with the players the Lakers have historically been able to attract. But it looks like the Clippers are on their way to doing just that and while they are... the Lakers will be trying to win a championship or two in the next couple of years. If Kobe Bryant has his way, the Black Mamba will strike his venom until he and the Lakers are the last team standing. With their current roster of megastars, that may happen this season for the Lakers’ version of the Dream Team. l // bhtmag.com // 37

Mean Girls At Work:
How to Stay Professional When Things Get Personal
Women-to-women relationships in the work place are complicated. Jealously. Backstabbing. Gossip. Malicious Behavior. Sabotage. Entitlement. Unprofessionalism. Does your female colleague harshly put down your ideas and company input?
First and foremost, do not take her remarks personally. This is an angry individual who is using you as her current target. You are not the first person to feel her verbal barbs, and you wont be the last. You can take one of two approaches: Disarm her by using humor, or ignore her.
PROBLEMS... SOLUTIONS...
Is there a woman at the office who argues with everything you say?
We’ve seen it or been through it.; females in the work place who do everything, but act professional. Here are some of the most common problems plaguing females when an office environment turns into a henpecking battle ground.
Do you have a co-worker who speaks down to you?
Your best approach is to keep a cool distance from her while maintaining a professional relationship. Do not take her behavior personally. See her as an unpleasant obstacle that you have to deal with, but—one that you do not have to like.
Are you subject to a female coworker who is more pleasant to her male colleagues than female co-co-workers?
You are in the grip of a super competitive woman who views every other woman as a rival. Your best bet is to try and diffuse her killer instinct by letting her know that you aren't a threat. You can do this by appreciating her work, noticing her expertise and complimenting her on the way she handles certain business situations.
Do you have a co-worker who puts you down publicly?
Start by taking steps to purge the emotional toxins that naturally emerge from receiving her verbal jabs. You could engage in rigorous exercise after work, get a massage, or try some other form of self-care. If you need support, seek out the counsel of a trusted workplace confidante—a mentor or possibly seasoned professional.
Approach your colleague and ask to have a private conversation with her. Let her know that you respect her opinion and you want to work with her, but that she seems to have a problem working with you and you would like to talk about it. If this woman denies there is a problem, say, “Okay. If you decide there's something you want to tell me, I'm available.”
Is there a woman in the office who freezes you out during a conversation—personal or business?
Does a “clique” of women at work ignore you?
Make your own lunch dates and your own plans to meet your friends and professional connections for lunch. Over time as you develop relationships with co-workers, they may reach out to you.
Does a workplace gossip bully you into joining in?
Try this: “Let me think about it,” or, “I have little interaction with her, so I dont really know,” or, “Thats interesting. Im not sure.” Then go back to eating your lunch or focus on performing whatever task you were engaged in before the insiders tried to enroll you.
Do women whisper about you when you walk by?
Let it go. You dont really know what they said. If they were gossiping about you, it does not matter. Women who put other women down are doing it to feel better about themselves. Take the high road, proceed as if the incident never happened. l
It could be related to your age, your appearance, or your credentials. Whatever the issue is, your frosty coworker isn't responding to you, she is responding to what she thinks you stand for. As upsetting as it is to be unfairly judged, you will not be able to change this woman's mind about you. Understand that anyone who has to freeze another person out probably has a very defensive and insecure point of view.
Is there a woman who is sabotaging you at work because you are "different?"
Try to clear the air by saying, “It seems that you dont like me, and I want to find a way that we can work together. We dont have to be friends, but we do have to work with each other. Can we agree on that?” See how your colleague responds. One thing you can do is document her behavior. Keep a running list of what she does, and if her cruel and demeaning behavior continues, you may need to go to Human Resources and report your experience.

Fashion, Music & Downtown LA Art Walk Successfully Merge for the First Time By Nataliya Joy Prieto A packed house welcomed teams for the first ever LA Fashion Week and the Downtown LA Art Walk by Project Ethos. The historic Exchange LA featured an array of programming from multiple fashion shows and DJ sets, to an electric performance from Icelandic female pop group, The Charlies. The red carpet bustled with excitement where the official sponsor Scion parked a sleek white FR-S sports car, a model that premiered this year. A Meet and Greet in the downstairs art gallery hosted by The Fashion Law Group reached capacity with a variety of celebrity stylists including those from Chic Little Devil Style House, buyers from LF Stores, The Doneger Group, and curators from Art Pic Gallery, Altered Space Gallery and more—as well as hundreds of fashion, music and art enthusiasts. Emerging designer fashion shows were at 9:30PM and 10:30PM featuring the designs of Jose Galeana (Galean Designs), Jennifer Krischer (Linden), Felicia Barth-Aasen (Collective 26), Claudia Gonzalez Pruitt (Beso Moda), Andre Myers (Nine Menswear), B. by Aperire, Marialia Pacitto (Marialia), Lawren Michele Cappelletti (Lawren Michele) and Kiki Hasija (ARIA by Kiki Resort Wear. Models cascaded down staircases to strut in front of a LED wall; hair and make-up styled by TNT Agency. Starting a “Synthesis” after party was a fashion show by the iconic Goorin Bros. with their latest collection. Artists Steven Michael O’ Connor and Jhydyn Levi took to the stage with two forms of live art; O’Connor did an oil on canvas piece, and Levi whose paint-splattered 3-D creation spelling the words “Project Ethos” gave the audience a feast for the eyes. Electro-club duo Oliver and celebrity DJ Caroline D’Amore lent their music skills to the after party, spinning throughout the celebration. l nataliya joy prieto is a fashion major, actress, print and runway model who regularly appears on television, in the movies, on music videos and in national commercials. www.nataliyajoyprieto.com

Italian Garlic Breadsticks Seasoned Parmesan cheese coating on ready made bread pastry. Prep time: 20 minutes; 6 Servings/One dozen sticks. INGREDIENTS 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese; 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning; 1 teaspoon garlic powder; 1/4 cup butter, melted; 1 tube (11 ounces) refrigerated breadsticks DIRECTIONS Combine cheese shallow bowl with Italian seasoning and garlic powder. Put butter in another shallow bowl; separate dough into individual breadsticks. Dip in butter, then cheese mixture. Twist 2-3 times; place on an ungreased baking
RIPPLED COFFEE CAKE Prep 10 min; Bake 30 min; 16-20 Servings
How To Sugar Fruit • Work with one piece of fruit at a time, lightly brush gelatin mixture over entire surface with a pastry brush. Place on a wire rack over waxed paper. • With a spoon, sprinkle superfine sugar all over the fruit until a desired look is achieved. Let dry completely before handling.
Sugar whole pieces or cut pieces. For cut pieces, use fruit that won’t turn brown when exposed to air, like apples and pears. On cut fruit sugar may not adhere as well, so dab the cut side with paper towel and let air dry a few hours before brushing with the gelatin mixture and sprinkling with sugar. Sugared grape clusters become stiff when dry, so drape grapes over an inverted bowl until dry. You can sprinkle fruit with additional sugar before completely dry to achieve a more dramatic effect. When arranging the centerpiece, handle the fruit as little as possible as the heat from your hands could dissolve the sugar. An excellent Holiday treat for a table setting.

Art by Mandara Takowsky. For information: mtakowsky @yahoo.com LA ART SCENE by Mandara Takowsky The JoAnne Artman Gallery is showing the inventive creativity framework of photographer Brooke Shaden for her second exhibition and introduce artist J.T. Burke. A fine art photographer living and working in Los Angeles, Brooke’s camera lens realism creates images resembling an era not our own. "My goal in creating photographs is not to take pictures, but instead create new worlds through my imagery. I want to mold and shape stories that are centered on character, but pay attention to where those characters are going and where they have been. Each image attempts to capture the moment of most tension where the character cannot turn back. Worlds that are distinctly different from our own...yet call upon reality to keep the viewer rooted in reality questioning each piece,” states Brooke whose new body of work combines two elements: On one side underwater photography allows viewers to see in- to the world of living under water. The other series incorporates surrealism and whimsy; photographs of small objects are transformed into the centerpiece of the image. In some small keys or paper airplanes are layered into the image hundreds if not thousands of times to create an elegant dress for the subject. Jeffrey Thomas Burke received a BA from UCLA and (hon) MS in photography from Brooks Institute. He worked many years as a commercial photographer, cinematographer and graphic designer. Jeffrey was an early adopter of digital photography and imaging as part of his studio practice in the 1990s. "My work presents a wild divergence from traditional photography and image manipulation. I collect and photograph vintage costume jewelry, then digitally collage those elements into complex and richly-detailed compositions. I riff with the concepts of afterlife, eternity and paradise. The newest pieces I will be showing at Joanne Artman Gallery represent my most adventurous work to date." l

TORO
Bri Romano and Luke Lovell are LA artists exploring a unique medium of art. They met while attending art school, starting working together and moved into an art studio in Downtown...and Toro was conceived. Romano says, “It’s no secret that cattle are one of the most utilized creatures on our planet. Born and raised to provide for the masses, they are disregarded once we have gotten all we can from them, without any appreciation. Toros' mission is to change that, hence our motto: “You eat our flesh, You drink our milk, You wear our hides, Now view our beauty." Using art, we bring these creatures back to life in a way society can appreciate their beauty. “The two had a fascination with the skulls. After purchasing one from a gentlemen who laughed at them for being so intrigued...they instantly knew what they wanted to do. There began a creative journey that has brought them international acclaim with a continually evolving project. Experimenting with heat, resins, metals, gems and glass, their collection has grown into seeing their initial dream and goal come true. OLE! l
