THE
sented musician and philanthropist Herb Alpert with the National Medal of Arts for a lifetime of contribution to the arts. A music icon, Alpert, an accomplished sculptor and painter has enriched many cultural mediums. The National Medal of Arts awards established by Congress in 1984, is the highest award given to artists and art patrons by the United States government. The Arts and Arts Endowment’s advisory council recommends individuals and organizations to the President. “My dream of being a professional artist never included the Medal of Arts Award. I am deeply touched,” said Alpert, who has sold over 72 million albums over his career. He and his partner Jerry Moss changed the music industry when they founded the legendary A&M Records. An eight-time Grammy winner, Alpert is releasing his 34th studio album, “Steppin’ Out.“ He and his wife, Grammy-award winning singer Lani Hall, recently performed at the Hollywood Bowl. As a sculptor and painter, Alpert’s show, In·ter·course, is at the Robert Berman Gallery, Bergamot Station in Santa Monica. Alpert and Hall are actively involved in the work of The Herb Alpert Foundation. Formed in the 1980’s, the Foundation (which has given over $125 million in grants) supports arts education, music, jazz studies and organizations that create a compassionate society. In 2012 Herb Alpert received the Harlem School of the Arts inaugural leadership award in recognition of the life-saving $6 million grant his foundation gave to the school. The Foundation and California Institute of the Arts recently awarded the 19th Annual Alpert Award in the Arts ($75,000) to six exceptional midcareer artists. It recognized past performances and future promises to artists working in dance, music, film, video, theatre and visual arts. Alpert and Hall gave the first Alpert Award in the Arts in 1995. The Herb Alpert Foundation recently funded the P.S. ARTS Festival at R.H. Dana Middle School, in Hawthorne. P.S. ARTS supports California schools promoting arts in classrooms serving more than 11,000 elementary/middle school students through core programs, and 4,500 additional children through afterschool and summer programs. www.psarts.org www.herbalpertfoundation.org l

Hollywood Fights To Eliminate Human Trafficking By Peter Barent Lewis and Marie Paquim
STARS
Jada Pinkett Smith, John Savage, TV journalist Lisa Ling (The View), actor Jericho Rosales (from the Newport Beach Film Festival with the movie “Breakaway” a film on human trafficking in the Philippines), actress/filmmaker Marie Paquim (a survivor of human trafficking in Los Angeles), and others attended the 15th Annual Coalition To Fight Slavery & Trafficking (CAST) event, “From Slavery to Freedom” at the Sofitel Hotel, in Los Angeles. The event funds programs that offer prevention, protection and rehabilitation for victims of human trafficking & slavery. CAST founder Dr. Kathryn McMahon, noted with pride CAST’s participation in getting legislation as the Trafficking Victims Protection Act passed so traffickers can’t harm victims if and Actor/Activist Jada Pinkett Smith when they are brave enough to make a report. “Legislation funds prosecution efforts and organizations worldwide like CAST to do innovative programming for prevention,” said McMahon. “With an alarming 49% increase in breaking up cases of tafficked victims in the Los Angeles area, I believe it’s evidence that our outreach is working. We’ve trained much of the system, law enforcement and government in communities like LA-based organizations, churches and temples. I believe that is why we now see an increase in referrals from people in the community.” Jericho Rosales received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Newport Film Festival for his starring role in the “Breakaway” and credited support from anti-trafficking organTV Journalist Lisa Ling izations within the Philippines for all their help. “They educated us about the problem; 20% of those that CAST saves are from the Philippines, and they’re brought to Los Angeles. That was enough to move the entire team into... ‘Okay, let’s put our heart into this film and do this. Let’s try to help somehow.’” The film “Breakaway” is about a single father searching for his nine year-old trafficked son and the story mirrors a problem many Philippinos face. Survivors of Human Slavery & Trafficking
“From Slavery To Freedom Event” is UEvolution, an innovative gym designed for selfempowerment, nutrition and self-esteem. Founder/CEO, France native Pascale Rothman, a survivor of sex trafficking said, “I was hurting so much and my self-esteem was so low. I said to myself, if I had a chance, I would change things.” From her experience she had the idea to create a gym to help people like herself find some direction. “If you have the right support and people are there for you, it’s going to be okay. Not only will you survive, but thrive, and go on to live life to the fullest.” Marie Paquim is another success story. A former victim of human trafficking here in Los Angeles, Maria took part in CAST's event taking photos and interviewing celebrities. She is currently at work as Producer/Co-writer/Actress on a film project on human trafficking in the USA, "Land of the Free, Except for Me." Actress Blanca Blanco has a personal connection to the issue, as her family from Mexico was led across the border for promised opportunity for work only to find themselves trapped in “debt bondage”, a form of human trafficking. Blanco said, “They were exploited, and worked long hours, then, no rights. They would not get paid and were threatened to call immigration, or were hostages when they crossed the border. The people who crossed them – obviously it was illegal – charged them one fee; once in the U.S. they tripled the price so you cannot get out.” In Blanco’s case, her family found freedom and citizenship in the U.S., but a sadder fate befalls many hopeful immigrants. l

Who Says You Can’t Have It All? The Charmed Life Of
NO doubt you’ve seen his face in big dollar action films
and TV shows (Max Payne, A Good Day To Die Hard, My Sister’s Keeper) and long-running theatrical productions from New York to LA including, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, and Brooklyn USA, among many others. He recently wrapped Dear Eleanor, a film directed by Kevin Conolly (Entourage), in which he appeared along side Jessica Alba. Currently and through the end of September, he is starring as Frank Sinatra in the hit stage production, Frank and Ava; a role that is garnering him a wide range of acclaim playing one of the most iconic stars of all time. With a leg-long list of acting, directing writing and producing credits under his belt, it’s hard to imagine Rico Simonini has time for much else. Not so. Most people struggle through life hoping to find one great passion to enrich their life. But Simonini isn’t just anyone. His talent along with a pushing drive to live life to the fullest puts him in a category that few can accomplish. Simonini —Dr. Simonini to us—is a top cardiologist at CedarsSinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills, California. Hum... entertaining and saving lives? To some, it might seem an unlikely combination, but not to Simonini who says his professions are very connected. And how does all this play out in real life-real time? With a workaholic mind set, he manages a tighter than tight schedule with incredible ease. His strategy for success: He doesn’t take what most of us think of as a “vacation” because he says he truly loves his medical profession and doesn’t feel a need to get away from it. Instead, if cast in film, television or stage role, he takes “free” time to indulge in his other passion—acting; citing thespian/physician Anton Chekhov who said he was married to medicine but the theatre was his mistress. “For me, being a cardiologist and actor come down to the same thing: it’s about the heart. Care for a heart or give your heart and have passion for what you do. There are a lot of hearts to save. My father was in his 50s when he had his first heart attack.
Dr. Rico Simonini He was lucky that at the time his son was in medical school and could do something about it. For most who survive a first heart attack, adherence to medical therapy, risk factor awareness, modification and lifestyle changes remain a challenge.” During medical school and post-graduate training, his research focused on cardiology and inflammation (what really causes damage to the heart muscle and leads to heart failure; damages blood vessels leading to the growth of plaque that can block arteries, rupture and cause heart attacks). So it wasn’t unlikely that he would end up on staff at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute as well as UCLA Medical Center. Simonini’s approach to preventing heart disease revolves around lifestyle management. His popular lectures, seminars, and workshops, radio interviews and numerous medical and health articles in which he appears, center on the importance of moderation in everyday life. And, Rico doesn’t just play a tough guy on film. In real life, he is a no-nonsense health advocate who lobbies for the cause of cardiovascular care, and who doesn’t think twice about taking on the drug companies that he feels contribute to the excessive penetration and extreme dependence of certain prescription medications in our society. At his Beverly Hills medical practice, an office he has shared for over 10-years with cardiologist, Dr. Jay Schapira and Dr. John Harold, who is President of the American College of Cardiology, Simonini advocates a preventative heart care program. “Heart disease is still the number one killer in America. For some, the first attack is more likely to be their last. Each year some 325,000 people in the U.S. die from sudden cardiac death (usually 40-65 age group). It is especially
Rico and co-star Jessica Alba in the upcoming film, Dear Eleanor.
important that we find ways to predict and prevent that first heart attack. Early intervention can be life-saving.” Through combined efforts with his colleagues in the College of Cardiology, the Heart Institute, and non-profit organizations such as GUARDaHEART, Simonini is working on ways to more accurately predict who is at risk. He cautions that cholesterol numbers are not enough as over 40% of heart attack victims have NORMAL levels. “Other factors such as inflammation in a person’s arteries may pose the biggest risk for heart attack.” Simonini’s current research examines the ability using a blood test that measures seven biomarkers of inflammation to predict heart attacks. Still, having people know and understand their risk and adhere to interventions are the key. “I tell patients that diet and exercise still play a major role in the quest for longevity.” Just as he owes his need to mend hearts to his father's health, Simonini attributes his love for Hollywood and film to the many late nights watching movies with his mother when he was very young. It was the great performances by the likes of Gable, Bogart, and Brando he never forgot. “I never thought I would perform myself. In acting one takes big risks hoping people appreciate what you do. Medicine is about minimizing risks. While medicine helps people in real life, film takes people out of their real lives if only for a couple of hours. Sometimes that means everything.” l

WITH so very many long-standing
organizations in our incredible city that give endless support to our kids who need help, I do my best in each issue to give them all the credit they deserve for the amazing job they do. By profiling these life changing non-profits, I not only hope to put the spotlight on the good they do... but get all of you in the mood to do some good as well! Your support of these powerful organizations allows them to continue making much needed changes in our world. One of my favorites: A Place Called Home. Giving South Central Los Angeles children/teens ages 8-21 lots of love, safety, enrichment, training and opportunities through educational programs,
counseling and mentorship, supporters and volunteers of this group never stop in their quest to help kids in need. And, TODAY in our great city of Los Angeles there are more kids living on the streets, going to bed hungry, and barely surviving their unstable family conditions than ever before. Day to day experiences for these kids is all about hardship. This year, A Place Called Home celebrated a special group of inner-city teens who are learning and growing into strong young women through its intensive GirlPower Project. The 9th
Annual GirlPower! Awards Luncheon at the Beverly Hills Hotel was sponsored by A Place Called Home and honored four inspiring business and professional women—role models in their personal and professional lives. Their leadership and volunteer efforts make a difference for our community’s children. The Social Change Award was presented to Amy Ziering, producer/director of the 2012 Oscar-nominated documentary, “The Invisible War” and many other socially relevant films. The Legacy Award went to Dana Green, Executive Director, Media Relations, Disney Channels and founder of “The Cinderella Project,” a partnership with APCH providing formal prom and graduation dresses for underprivileged young women throughout Los Angeles. Susan Feldman, Co-Founder of One Kings Lane was presented with the Innovators Award and Alison Pincus, Co-Founder of One Kings Lane received the Innovators Award. All of the proceeds from the GirlPower luncheon support the numerous APCH core programs which work in conjunction with each other to support APCH members in avoiding destructive behaviors; to develope life skills and get the motivation to overcome adversity and make healthy, productive choices and, find and take advantage of the opportunities that are before them as they go through life. www.apch.org. l

How To Navigate A Cancer Diagnosis By Dr. Niki Barr
Pioneering Psychotherapist Shares Strategies for Managing Anxiety & Maintaining Emotional Wellness
Author of “Emotional Wellness, The Other Half of Treating Cancer”.
Unlike many of the most important events in a person’s life: having a child, graduation, marriage... almost no one anticipates a cancer diagnosis.
This year, nearly 239,000 U.S. men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than 232,000 women will learn they have breast cancer, according the American Cancer Society. Over their lifetime, nearly half of all men can expect a cancer diagnosis and more than a third of women. Thankfully, we have many tools for detecting cancers early and treating them successfully. But learning you have cancer remains one of life’s most frightening and stressful experiences. However, developing ways to help patients address their emotional well-being through their medical journey, still lags behind medical advances. Physicians and psychologists recognize that “healing” improves when both the physical and emotional needs of patients are served.
Tools for managing anxiety – a normal and emotionally healthy response to a cancer diagnosis, but one that can spiral out of control.
• Catch your anxious thoughts. Stop
anxious thoughts about fear, unease and worry before they lead to anxiety. Start by writing your thoughts on individual note cards, identifying the FIRST one that leads to you feeling anxious. Then the next one. When you’ve identified all of your anxious thoughts, go back to the first one and, on the card, write a new thought that won’t make you feel anxious. It should be a confident and empowering thought. Continue down the list and do the same for each anxious thought.
• Erase ‘what if’ thinking. What if the cancer has spread? What if treatment doesn’t work? ONE ‘what if’ leads to another and, often spirals into anxiety. Be aware when you start asking ‘what if’ and instead ask yourself, “Is this thought helping me or hurting me?” and “Is this thought moving me forward or backward?” • Ground yourself. Interrupt a chain of anxious thoughts by focusing on details around you. Look at the color of the walls in the room you’re in; take in the pictures on the walls, the books on the shelves and the titles on their spines; look at the person you’re talking to, the color of their eyes, the clothes they are wearing. By focusing on external details you can derail anxious thoughts. • Use distraction. Pick a favorite place and visit it. Absorb everything about it: colors, smells, people involved, sounds, tastes, how it feels. Build it up clearly in your mind, going over and over it, so it becomes a distraction tool. When you’re waiting for a medical test or procedure, undergoing a procedure, or any time you need to “be” somewhere else, revisit your distraction. Other tools include meditation CDs that use guided imagery; favorite music CDs; and a journal to record your thoughts and feelings. Managing your anxiety enables you to move forward through cancer whether you are a patient, caregiver or family member. Don't tell yourself you can't handle what you're going through. Yes, you can ... five minutes at a time. l Niki Barr, Ph.D. founded a pioneering psychotherapy practice working with cancer patients in all stages of the disease, along with their family and caregivers and friends.

bles contain more vitamins and minerals than non-organic, conventional counterparts, particularly if they’re picked ripe and locally grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides and GMO (genetically modified organisms); all harmful on reproductive health, hormones, and overload the liver. Animal products should be free of antibiotics/hormones/GMO feed. Animal fats can have concentrated levels of toxins. Dust Off Your Blender: Feeling hungry or lethargic? Juice or smoothie with vitamins, minerals, and enzymes, delivers nutrients directly to the cells in your body.
Limit Gluten-Containing Grains: Gluten (protein in grains: wheat, rye, barley, spelt, kamut) and allergies to it (Coeliac Disease) is rising. If you’re not gluten sensitive, do your body good and cut back. Gluten can irritate and damage the intestinal lining and cause inflammation and immune reactions. Traditional preparation for grains: soak at least 12 hours; fermenting or sourdough leavening removes some gluten making them less harmful. Stay Away from Processed Sugary Foods: Sugar/refined carbohydrates can cause
blood sugar highs/lows, mood swings or food cravings if not balanced by fats and proteins. Fruits have a lower glycemic load or glycemic index (GI). If you eat high GI foods, combine them with healthy fats to steady the uptake of glucose into the bloodstream. Avoid high fructose corn syrup, glucose syrup, artificial sweeteners. Eat Good Fats: Good fats/cholesterol are vital for nutrient absorption/hormone production. Healthy saturated fats are coconut oil, wild fish, organic dairy, grassfed meats, monosaturated fats (extra virgin cold-pressed olive oil, macadamia nuts, and avocados). Free-radical producing bad fats are margarine spreads, commercial baked cookies, potato chips, and vegetable oils. Prepare Your Meals with Care: No microwave! Eat raw foods undamaged by heat. Sauté, steam or grill over low/ medium heat with stable fats (coconut oil, ghee or butter) in an old-fashioned cast iron pot. These ideal cooking fats are less volatile. Vegetables oils can become toxic when oxidized at high temperatures.
Know Where Your Food Comes From: Where food comes from is vital to good nutri-
tion. Check the origin of foods. Is it local or shipped in from far away. The more local and in-season, the better for your health, environment, and local food economy.
Read Labels: Chemical food additives wreak havoc on hormones and lead to weight gain and addiction. MSG, the flavor enhancer tricks our brain into thinking we need to overeat. It’s disguised by names, E621, monosodium glutamate, glutamic acid, hydrolyzed vegetable oil, yeast extract, mono-calcium glutamate and found in ready-made soups, potato chips, sauces, and cookies. A TIP: If you can’t pronounce it or it has numbers or codes, don’t eat it! FINALLY — Eat in a Relaxed State: The stomach and digestive systems are sensi-
tive. Eating fast, or on the run puts your body in a state of fight or flight, compromising or shutting down your digestive processes, cutting off the assimilation of nutrients to your system. What we don’t digest can turn into bacterial fermentation, bloating, or fat. Enjoy your meal in a relaxed state and with good intention. www.hungryforchange.tv. l

Why We Love
THE DOCTORS Cute • Charismatic • Sexy In Scrubs
and OH... Talented, Cutting-edge, Dedicated Hard-working Plastic Surgeons! By Suzanne Takowsky
Dr. Andrew Ordon Dr. Ritu Chopra
BEVERLY Hills plastic surgeons Dr. Andrew Ordon
and Dr. Ritu Chopra have made a niche for themselves beyond the fanfare afforded to those talented doctors of aesthetic perfection who practice in a city where beauty takes the cake over just about anything. As bona fide TV stars and co-hosts on the Emmy-Awardwinning show, The Doctors, Ordon and Chopra give a worldwide web of loyal viewers a close-up look into something very few of us get to see when we stroll into a serious-minded doctor’s office for services rendered: PERSONALITY! Sure they are rocket scientist smart, BUT they’re also funny, charming and quick with on the spot answers to embarrassing questions that few could ask his/her doctor eye to eye. The daytime TV show, a brain child of Dr. Phil, debuted in 2008 with a team of medical professionals there for the pickin’ to talk about more health-related topics than most of us have heard of. An instant hit, the show hasn’t slowed for a minute, and no doubt, it’s popularity continues to soar because of the ongoing comradery and charisma of its supercool cohosts; two of those — Ordon and Chopra. Off set, they are associates in a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery practice in Beverly Hills, California, with an additional office in Rancho Mirage, California. In a world of boob jobs, face lifts, liposuction, facial fillers, breast lifts, nose jobs and tummy tucks... where do I begin?
16 // bhtmag.com //
Why do you think The Doctors is so successful? ORDON: Although I had done talk shows as a guest, I had never been involved in my own show. We liked the concept of the show, but we had no clue whether it would fly, or last. Well, 900 shows later, and getting ready for our sixth season, the show has found a niche. People want to learn more about their health, be proactive, and be entertained. The show does just that. How has the show impacted your private practice? CHOPRA: It’s been great to be a part of The Doctors as a guest. It gives our practice worldwide exposure, and allows us to showcase our talents and disseminate solid medical information. Traveling to the Middle East with Dr. Ordon was incredible. People knew us immediately, and were unbelievably kind. The show has directly impacted our practice by making it a worldwide practice. We get inquiries from every part of the world — which is very flattering. ORDON: The show is a hit not only in the U.S., but Africa, Canada, Europe, Australia, and South America. When I go to the Middle East (where I have been three times), I am blown away with the show’s and MY popularity. That being said, it's been a huge impact on my practice. People seek me out from all over the world. They know me BEFORE I see them in consultation. Quite flattering. But, I AM what they see on TV. I am proud that I am probably the most seen plastic surgeon on the planet, and, I relish that platform. My mind-set is to represent mainstream Board Certified Plastic Surgeons in the best light possible. My credo is safety, information, what works
and what doesn’t. And, just as important... doing plastic surgery for the right reasons.
The show covers a variety of topics, medical concerns and cutting-edge treatments. Who chooses the platforms for discussion and physicians who appear? ORDON: Although the four doctors make suggestions, and we do have editorial control, our producers choose most topics and experts, and they do a great job. They have a good feel for what our audience is looking for, and a lot is based on website feedback. Dr. Chopra and I lend ideas to showcase cutting-edge surgeries. Plastic surgery has dramatically changed and evolved over the years. What at one time was not for everyone is now an option for anyone interested in improving and rejuvenating their look. What are the “HOT” face and body procedures for men and women. ORDON: Plastic surgery truly has come out of the closet! It's available to people from every walk of life. Probably the single biggest impact are non-invasive procedures; botox, fillers, and lasers that give men and women, old and young—easy options to look their best. Plastic surgery has never been safer, or more natural and predictable. We love what we do! CHOPRA: The most popular procedures for both men and women are non-invasive procedures that vary from radiofrequency and ultrasound skin tightening to resurfacing the entire skin with CO2 lasers. People are getting great results with minimal down time. We also see people who are starting to care more about taking care of their skin earlier in their lives, and not waiting until the aging process takes hold. People in their 30's are using small interventions such as botox and fillers, and are finding that as they continue on, they need less and less as they age. But the HOTTEST trend still remains taking care of oneself with diet, exercise and stress reduction, so you won’t need as much help as you age to remain active, healthy and youthful looking. l

He's Just
NOT That Into You. Telltale Signs By Certified Dating Coach Tara Richter
DATING is difficult.
It’s a jungle out there, and it can be very challenging trying to decipher if someone you like is into you — or NOT! Is he just being nice, or is he wanting to know if you are relationship material? When you can recognize the signs that a man is INTO YOU... it’s easier to see when he is NOT. When a man meets you for the first time, and you have piqued his interest, he will want to know more about you. He will begin to check things off his mental list of requirements for an “ideal” woman/relationship. He will ask your friends about you, your co-workers, and anyone else who may help him learn what makes you tick. He’ll ask you for your phone number, business card, add you on Facebook, and use any other form of contact to get in touch with you. Never offer your number to a man. If he’s into you, he will climb mountains, swim through oceans and fight tigers to get it. He will make sure you don’t get away. He’ll investigate to see who you hang out with, what your family is like, what you do for a living. It’s easy in this technology-driven age to find out about a person online. If you are more than a one-night stand he will want to know everything about you, and you will constantly be on his mind. You will know this because he will send you sweet little text messages, emails, instant messages — short, cute lines of communication such as: “Good morning”, “How are you”, “Hope you have a great weekend”, and anything that is inquiring about you on a personal level. Your conversations with him will be more in-depth. He will ask you what your biggest fear is, what your five year plan looks like, or what your ideal family would be. He will want to know the long term things on your mind. When a man starts to ask these types of questions, you know he is serious about finding “the one” for him. He is emotionally ready to start planning for the future and wants to find that special someone to spend it with. AND, he will want to see you all the time. No matter how busy he is, he will fit you into his schedule. If you only have a certain time available, he will rearrange his schedule to be with you. You are special to him and he does not want you to get away.
OOPS — You Did What?
Telltale signs that a man is NOT into you: He does NONE of these things.
He won’t ask for your number. He won’t ask questions about you to your friends. He won’t ask you out. Maybe there wasn’t any chemistry for him and you didn’t arouse his interest. There’s no way to know why chemistry does or does not occur. Millions of small things (conscious and subconscious) go on when you meet someone for the first time. It’s these subtleties that result in further interest or NOT! Often men don’t know why they are intrigued by one woman, and not another. It’s the pheromones, hormones, actions, words, and nonverbal communication that attracts him. Men say, “She’s just so mysterious. I need to find out more about her!” For them, it’s either there or it’s not. On the other hand, let’s say you captivated him in the beginning. He was doing all the signs listed when, like a light switch, he turns off, and you don’t hear from him. He goes from calling, texting, and inquiring about you to silence. You’re left speechless and heartbroken. How could he have been so into you at first and, now nothing? Sometimes men don’t know what they want. They think they know, but when they get it, they decide it’s really not what they want. It sucks, but happens. Men also have a hard time articulating their feelings. If they aggressively pursued you for months, then they suddenly decide you aren’t the one for them, they don’t know how to tell you. When a man doesn’t know what to do — he does nothing. People experience heartbreak. It’s not fun. Remember you are a wonderful, and special human being and you deserve someone who loves you for you. Women don’t try to mold yourself into a man’s idea of what a “perfect woman” is. Never compromise your unique self. There are a billionplus people on earth, you will eventually find the perfect mate for you. l

You met someone and started thinking this is “THE ONE” — AGAIN! So you let your guard down and gave him/her access to personal information. Sadly, true love has ended, and your nightmare has started.
When a relationship ends — especially when it’s a BAD split — every photo, email, voice message and text you sent to your “loved one” is now in the hands of a person — who depending on how much they HATE you — can cause you a serious security problem and a trunk full of embarrassment. Private information you gave in trust is fair game for your personal destruction. In about a second a nasty ex can, with the push of a button, send everything they have on you in their possession into cyberspace for revenge. There goes your life! Personal information you don’t want others to see is now splattered across the globe. Racy photos and videos; e-mail passwords; bank logins; health insurance identification; Social Security numbers. OYE VEY!!!!!!!!
• 1 in 10 EXs has threatened to post a revealing photo of a former partner online; 60% followed through with the threat. • With knowledge of passcodes and login information, 56% of current and former mates snoop on their significant other’s social CHECK THIS OUT:
media and bank accounts, and e-mails — some changed passcodes and logins to block the rightful person from going on.
Put new password locks and antivirus software on computers and mobile devices especially Android phones and tablets. Tracking software, such as Apple's Find My iPhone lets you remotely wipe information from a device if it's lost/stolen. Don’t send racy photos. Once a photo/video is shared by text or e-mail, you’ve lost control over it. The EX would have to agree to delete all copies. In the words of Al Pacino from Scarface... “Who do I trust?” “Me!” Don't feel pressured to share passwords as a way of proving you trust someone. BREAKUPS! Not a favorite topic if you are looking for true love. But a realistic and even welcome outcome for the majority of daters.
Are Text Message Breakups Taboo? By Angela Jacob Bermudo
REMEMBER when breaking up
over the phone was bad form? A few months ago, I was dating a guy, “Jim” who just graduated from law school. We met through Facebook with the help of a mutual friend. Our first date was at Dillon’s Irish Pub in Hollywood. We hit it off thanks to his dream of becoming an actor and my work in the entertainment industry. Our affair lasted through the Christmas holidays and a trip to Big Bear to introduce him to my friends. Since Jim lived in Corona, he spent time at my condo in Pasadena so we could be together more. I took this as a positive sign for our romance. Valentine’s week, Jim seemed to get a little distant, which I attributed to an aggressive job hunt he was on since passing his bar exam. A couple of days shy of Valentine’s Day, I got a text messages from him... “Hey. I don’t really think this is going to work out.” And just like that, I was dumped.
Dating website, WhatsYourPrice.com says twice as many men use cellphones to break up versus 43% of women. The most common method? Text messaging — which has become a widely accepted form of communication for more than just the Y Generation, according to Founder/ CEO of WhatsYourPrice.com Brandon Wade, “Men are often detached when it comes to breakups and often want to end it with little to no drama. I believe this is the reason that more men are using text messages to do the deed.” Who can forget the episode on Sex in the City when Carrie Bradshaw’s boyfriend, Burger, breaksup with her through the help of a yellow Post-It, containing the words “I’m sorry. I can’t. Don’t hate me.” But, Sarah Jessica Parker’s character on the infamous HBO show is not alone. Katy Perry’s ex-husband Russell Brand
News of George Clooney splitting up with long-time girlfriend, Stacy Keibler using a less than savory method hit headlines. It seems Mr. Clooney thought that ending a two year relationship over the phone was acceptable, if tabloids are to be believed. But George Clooney isn’t alone—more men are using cell phones to “call it quits”. According to a survey by dating website, WhatsYourPrice.com
announced plans to file for divorce via text message. Taylor Swift also received breakup news via a phone call — an awkwardness, abrupt and impersonal split. WhatsYourPrice.com, polled 7,500 men and 8,300 women to find out if technology has taken over as the new method of breaking up. The survey asked both sexes which methods they used most often when calling it quits, and if an ex has ever broken up with them using a cell phone. AND, breaking up isn’t the only thing men use their cell phones for. WhatsYourPrice.com sister website, SeekingArrangement.com conducted a similar study in May which revealed that 57% of men use their mobile devices the most when cheating. Some of the mediums included text messages, Facetime and Snapchat. Women preferred to use social media. WhatsYourPrice.com is the only dating website where first dates are bought and sold. By allowing "generous members" to create an incentive for "attractive members" to go on a first date, WhatsYourPrice.com provides a dating-shortcut. WhatsYourPrice? The Online Dating Auction was published in October of 2012. Since its launch in April 2010, the website has amassed over 650,000 members worldwide, as well as being featured on national and international television and print media. WhatsYourPrice.com founder Brandon Wade is also CEO of a number of successful niche online dating websites including the world's largest Sugar Daddy dating website — SeekingArrangement.com; the number one destination-dating website — MissTravel.com, and the premier millionaire matchmaking website — SeekingMillionaire.com. The following are results of the Break Up Methods survey. Results were ranked on how often each sex used a breakup method, the method used to breakup and what percentage have used it. l

What “ PLAY MISTY FOR ME” Teaches Us About Dangerous Playthings
7 Deadly Stalking Lessons Long
by Michael P. Naughton
before Clint Eastwood picked up an Oscar for The Unforgiven (92’) he should have gotten one for his directorial debut, Play Misty For Me (1971). John Cassavetes said about the film, “There’s only one thing wrong with it; it’s missing Hitchcock name.” It was that good and has stood the test of time. It’s a masterpiece. Fatal Attraction was a good film, but Play Misty for Me was a great film. Flawless with an original script. Outstanding acting. Breathtaking cinematography. And a killer sound track. At that time, Eastwood explored a subject that no one dared: STALKING. In the film, Eastwood is a successful disc jockey in Monterey California. He is cool, laid back, and likes jazz and poetry. A romantic guy. He attracts Evelyn (masterfully played by Jessica Walter). She’s his biggest fan and late night caller. Her song request is always the same, Play Misty For Me. The love of his life, however, is Tobie (Donna Mills). She’s the one that got away and the one woman he’s hung up on. Eastwood’s character has a problem: philandering. That’s why he lost Tobie in the first place. Play Misty for Me, resonates deeper than a thriller. It teach us — warn us about life’s chance encounters. Dangerous Affairs. Toxic people. Famously stalked celebrities include Halle Berry, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Jodie Foster/Ronald Reagan/John Hinckley Jr., Leonardo DiCaprio. Rebecca Schaeffer (the case caused California to pass the first anti-stalking law in 1990) and Jennifer Aniston. The list goes on. Like the famous song sung by Marilyn McCoo, “You Don’t Have to Be a Star Baby To Be in My Show...” Well, you don’t have to be a celebrity to have a stalker. Knowing when to “pick up” on the Play Misty for Me warning signs before you “pick up” the wrong person might save your life and spare you lots of drama.
THE FIRST TIME EVER I SAW YOUR FACE
Roberta Flack’s great song was the back drop for the movie, but can describe your first contact with the enemy. Killer first impression? How we make a connection with people is random. But what if it’s contrived? What if a chance encounter is a set up and the person is a stalker? Evelyn was a shark and Eastwood her prey. She was the last person in the bar—at the end of the bar when he walked in. It was late and after his shift. The bartender says to Eastwood, “guys have been striking out all night.” Eastwood’s ego arises to the occasion. If you meet someone who knows a lot about you—you’ve been Googled! Are coincidences uncanny? Maybe they aren’t coincidences. Take a pass. Instead of, I Might Like You Better If We Slept Together by Romeo Void, do a Walk On By, by Dionne Warwick.
“BUT WHO NEEDS NICE GIRLS...”
At the bar Evelyn lies and claims to have been “stood up.” But Eastwood recognizes the voice as his late night “Misty” caller. Flattery clouds his judgement even though he is up front about his relationship with Tobie, saying he doesn’t want to complicate his life.
“That’s no reason we shouldn’t sleep together...” He takes the bait — and Evelyn to bed.
NO STRINGS ATTACHED
Of course, strings are attached. Evelyn is a Borderline Personality. Signals and tempers get crossed. Dust off that copy of, Men Are From Mars and Women are From Venus, to translate the female/ male lingo. A better song is, As Time Goes By. (You Must Remember This... a kiss is still a kiss). There are no true “friends with benefits”. It doesn’t work.
BORDERLINE IS NOT JUST A MADONNA SONG
It’s a personality disorder classified as “a pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, selfimage and affects...” Borderline Personalities can be suicidal or prone to self-mutilating behavior. Depression and boredom. Inappropriate, intense anger, difficulty controlling anger, explosive outbursts BUT at times childish and immature behavior. Author Carolyn Kaufman, Psy. D., The Writer’s Guide to Psychology, says, “Because they (BPD people) feel empty they have no ability to regulate their emotions, so everything comes out full blast, leaving recipients feeling like they stepped on an emotional landmine.”
EVER FEEL COMPLETELY SMOTHERED BY SOMEBODY?
He/She who lives by the sword/shall die by the sword. You could get a restraining order, but if a stalker has you in his/her sights, what good would it do? And, a last resort occurs after much damage has occured.
ARE YOU TRYING TO SAY YOU DON’T LOVE ME?
Eastwood’s response: “I never said I loved you...” Tension and violence escalate as Evelyn’s disorder and jealousy towards “that other bitch” (Tobie) becomes an epic meltdown. He tries to end the affair, but has crossed the point of no return. Borderline Personalities can’t handle rejection... she’s NOT getting dumped!
AND THIS MAIDEN SHE LIVED WITH NO OTHER THOUGHT THAN TO LOVE AND BE LOVED BY ME
Can an “Evelyn” get to you? Is your ego immune to the warning signs? Rent, download, or stream the film. Expand with Misery, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Bad Lieutenant, and Looking for Mr. Goodbar.

Joining Paul at the El Capitan to hand out the awards was none other than David Niven, Jr. (son of the famed actor and producer) who provided free copies to students of local LA schools of his educational game, “Souvenirs,” which is about American geography. In addition to Disney awarding students free movie passes, was the on-hands talent of Natalie Davis, Senior Manager for Product Development who co-designed the after-school program. Niven, summed up the success of LA’s BEST with helping to educate kids by talking about his game. “They have a good time and (the kids) don’t realize that they are learning something at the same time, which is great and for all ages — 8 to 108.” Be it basketball, board games, or learning, LA’s BEST has had a winning year! How To Ask For Help BY HArvEY mAckAY
those who are truly committed to success. I can personally attest to the necessity of asking for help. As a struggling 26-year-old with a dream of running my own factory, I quickly learned there were plenty of people whose advice and help would move me toward my goal – but only if I asked. And to my surprise, they were eager to share their wisdom, help me steer clear of potential bankrupting mistakes, and nudge me toward success.
little boy was spending his Saturday morning playing in his sandbox. He had cars and trucks, his plastic pail, and a shiny red shovel. In the process of creating roads and tunnels in the soft sand, he discovered a large rock in the middle of the sandbox. The boy dug around the rock, managing to dislodge it from the dirt. With a little bit of struggle, he pushed and nudged the large rock across the sandbox by using his feet. When the boy got the rock to the edge of the sandbox, he found that he couldn’t roll it up and over the wall of the sandbox. Each time he made some progress, the rock tipped and then fell back into the sandbox. Frustrated, he burst into tears. All this time the boy’s father watched from his living room window. As the tears fell, a large shadow fell across the boy, and the sandbox. It was his father. Gently but firmly he said, “Son, why didn’t you use all the strength you had available?” Defeated, the boy sobbed back, “But I did, Daddy, I did! I used all the strength I had!” “No, son,” corrected the father kindly. “You didn’t use all the strength you had. You didn’t ask me.” With that the father reached down, picked up the rock and removed it from the sandbox.

We all need help at some time. Don’t be afraid to ask for it. As I like to say... don’t say “NO” for the other person. Successful people rarely reach the top without a lot of help along the way. The ability and willingness to ask for help is one trait that really stands out among
As one who is often on the other side now, I appreciate the opportunity to advise and mentor entrepreneurs and emerging talents. When you are seeking advice from the experts, here are some items to consider: • Don’t waste their time. Once they’ve agreed to help, get to the point quickly. Don’t go through your life story in excruciating detail, or spend an hour explaining your business plan or the plot of your novel. Plan what you want to ask so you can make a clear, succinct request. Take notes so they know you value their input. • Get specific. Don’t just ask, “What should I do?” Imagine you can ask only one question (because that may be the case). Identify the most important issue you’re facing that your expert is qualified to address, and build your question around that. Be prepared in case you get a chance to ask a follow-up or move on to another subject. Don’t assume you’ll have all the time in the world to get to what you need. • Save one general question for the end. The corollary to the rule above is to save a few minutes to ask something like... “Is there anything else you’d recommend?” once you’ve gotten the answer to your essential question. This gives the expert a chance to expand on whatever information he/she has shared, and provides the opportunity to start building more of a relationship than a one-time transaction. • Give people options. When you approach an expert, ask for permission to probe his or her mind before starting to fire off questions. Give the other person some control over how to respond. It’s polite and shows your consideration for the expert’s time and workload. You’re asking for a favor. Be ready to trade services, buy lunch, offer your own expertise, or reciprocate in some other form. This demonstrates your professionalism and commitment to building relationships, not just grabbing information and leaving right away.
Successful people rarely reach the top without a lot of help along the way. The ability — and willingness — to ask for help is one trait that really stands out among those who are truly committed to success.
• Offer something in return.

SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS STRATEGY
3 CRUCIAL STEPS TO TAKE BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR By Lawton Ursrey
Product Marketing Manager, Sage One As businesses enter the second half of the year in full swing, it’s just as important, if not more important, to set year-end goals than it was back in January.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SETTING GOALS
We are more than halfway through the year and your business appears to be sailing along nicely, RIGHT? Now is the perfect time to step back and evaluate what you’ve done so far, where you want to be— AND TAKE ACTION NOW! Take a look at these three areas in your business. They can make the difference between you struggling or thriving at the end of 2013 and into 2014!
Find The Best Help GLOBALLY
Entrepreneurs are by nature independent. But if you want your business to grow, you MUST get over your “lone-wolf” tendencies, reach out and get the help you need. Fortunately, thanks to cloud collaboration, you don’t have to limit your search for help to your own backyard. You can find the right team members from anywhere in the world. Make a list of what you have been putting off and what needs to be done that is outside your expertise. Then, commit yourself to finding the right team members before the end of the year.
Rearrange Your SOCIAL TIME
Social media can be a great way to find new clients for your small business – but it can also be a huge time sucker. It’s great to “get social,” but use your time strategically. While Facebook has a large user base, unless you’re selling to the masses it may not be worth your BUSINESS time. Due to the new advertising program, it’s getting harder and harder for your business page posts to break through the noise. Instead of Facebook, try LinkedIn and Google+. LinkedIn is a must-do if you’re in B2B space – it’s a targeted social network with 200 million business people in one place, so it only makes good sense for you to be there. And Google+ usage is directly tied into your search engine rankings and online authority.
Behave Like A REAL BUSINESS
Solo entrepreneur or not – you have to walk the walk if you want to attract bigger and better clients. You need all your ducks in a row so you can confidently and successfully find and keep new clients. Get procedures in order so your work flow is smooth instead of harried. Use professional invoices that include your logo and branding. All these little touches may seem like nothing, but they add up to making a better impression – which can make a huge difference in your business growth. Make the next six months count by getting help, getting social and getting professional. l Lawton Ursrey started his career in IT with large corporations (PWC, Cerner) making lots of money, working long hours, and feeling unfulfilled. Following the untimely death of his father in 2007, he decided to follow his passion and founded Indie Peace (www.indiepeace.com), a green clothing manufacturer based in Atlanta, GA. The company uses recycled materials, hemp, recycled poly, bamboo, organic cottons, and tries to leave the lightest footprint possible in the process. In addition to Indie Peace, he is a product marketing manager for Sage One, a cloud-based invoicing, accounting and collaboration tool built from the ground up to help entrepreneurs.

Could Your Company’s Books Pass A Serious Audit? By Dira Creek, MBA Best Practices for Internal Organization: Accurate bookkeeping, accounting and management makes the difference between success or big trouble!
WE have entered the 2nd quarter of 2013 ... a good time to review internal controls for successful operations of your business. For any sized organization—from sole proprietorship to large corporation —to survive and thrive in today’s ever-changing business environment, accounting/financial procedures must not only be understood but well-managed, to avoid fraud and unwanted activities from your employees.
KEEP IN MIND... 1. Recording financial transactions accurately and on a timely basis is imperative to managing your business, and needed to create a healthy principle between business owner and employees to properly prepare all financial transactions. Internal controls create safeguards to protect the company’s financial information and its operational performance. 2. Accounting/cash transactions are vital steps for any size business. Two principals are the process of payment receipt and cash/payment to vendors: Create a procedure when receiving any checks, bank deposits and recording the transaction; there should be at least two people with owner’s involvement. This first step alone provides a clear picture of the company’s income. Cash/payment to vendors is critical for the company. Cash transactions and vendor payments are an easy target for fraudulent results. Specific procedures
should be in place for handling cash at the beginning and at the end of transactions. Yet again, at least two people with owner’s involvement (report with proof) should be involved. 3. Creating a step for vendor payments also plays a significant role. The owner should ALWAYS be involved in acknowledging and/or approving any request for vendor payments. The owner should also be familiar with all the vendors and their involvement with the company. 4. Consider an assets undertaking: establish a procedure for expensing or depreciating asset acquisition. 5. Human Resources: the hiring process, payroll or 1099 payment and procedures. 6. Financial Reporting: how often to review financials, listing of customers and vendors, cash report, bank and credit card statement review. Every company needs a good, trustworthy accountant and bookkeeper, internally and/or if outsourced through an experience Financial Business Consultant. Understanding internal controls protects your company. •

The Applied Leadership Model:
SEIDIO: Innotraveler Universal Car Mount
By Al Bolea
You Are What You Do
Digital Treasures
I first started building my leadership seminars, I went to Amazon.com to find a couple of reference books about leaders. I was surprised to find 334,829 books on the subject, roughly one book for every 950 people in the U.S. I then did a Google search that had 154 million hits on the subject. I also found 7.4 million leadership coaches and consultants. Amazed, I went to YouTube and found 56,000 leadershiprelated videos. With this endless supply of leadership resources it’s surprising that leadership — as a discipline — is often misunderstood and confused with other expectations people have of each other. For example, I am a member of a golf club in Houston, Texas. I golf a lot and meet new people. Conversations normally get around to what one does for a living. When I say that I’m a leadership consultant the following questions always emerges: “Al, what is leadership all about?” Before I can assemble my thoughts they answer their own question, “Oh, I know, it’s about having a good personality and being charismatic.” Usually as I start to respond, they turn away to hit their ball, quite satisfied with their answer. Popular perceptions are that leaders are charismatic, competitive, ambitious, and versatile. They make a great first impression and their success can be measured by the size of the crowd around them. They have an ability to rouse physical attraction, or elicit admiration in the eyes of others. Modern leadership theory has evolved over the past 100 years of research on the topic. In most recent theories, behavior has become the dominant characteristic of leadership. Concepts about innate qualities and personality types are long gone. It’s now believed that leaders behave in a way that defines success in others’ successes. The Applied Leadership model builds on this belief and focuses on two lenses: potentials and behaviors. These lenses are used to shape the view within an organization, from the people who work there, what they talk about, structure and processes to the support systems. The lenses are inter-related. It’s commonly believed that a person’s perception of their potential will affect their behavior. Applied Leadership turns this belief on its head. My position is that behavior drives potential and there has been a great deal of research by contemporary psychologists and neuroscientists to confirm this. I throw out “Great Man” theories. Simply stated, if a person becomes aware of their behavior and changes it to adopt behaviors of great leaders, then they’ll become a great leader. A person begins their leadership journey when they embrace that their behavior determines

their future potential. They become accountable and responsible. This redefined potential-behavior relationship shines new light on everything else in an organization:
• Enlightened leaders will nurture the behaviors of those people around them.
• Their
conversations become more future-oriented which then reshapes the informal relationships within a company. • Boundaries are altered to reflect the new relationships and resulting expectations. • Organization structure will be tweaked because new opportunities will occur through the stronger relationships. • Processes will be modified to address the new structure and relationships. • The level of trust, mutual support, and cooperation rises exponentially. An enlightened leader’s attention is on common goals and their influence occurs in groups. They meet other’s needs and understand that people around them have a deep need for what they have to offer. They model the way for others. They initiate and carry the burden of maintaining relationships. They do this by being verbally involved with people, informed, and by seeking other’s opinions. Lastly, they change the way that people think about what’s possible. The outcome will be transformational for most organizations:
• Direction is clearer and more widely understood. • Strong teams will emerge and will deliver more than the sum of the people abilities within them. Results will be delivered at the bottom line. Fewer mistakes will be made, fewer opportunities will be missed, and confidence in the organization’s capacity will grow.
• New possibilities will be seen and explored that can alter the future of an entire company. In short, changing the behaviors of individuals will maximize the potentials within the company. l Al Bolea is the founder of Applied Leadership Seminars, a company offering 10 leadership seminars, ranging from one to five days in length, and the annual Alaskan Executive Leadership Retreat in Ketchikan, Alaska. Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Kathy Gohar On The Business Of Beauty And What It Takes To Look Ageless! By Suzanne Takowsky
Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgeon to the Stars, Dr. Kathy Gohar understands the
needs of aging skin. Dr. Gohar is the founder of Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center, one of the leading skin resurfacing and cosmetic surgery centers in Southern California. Knowing how to turn back the hands of time and restore a youthful freshness to her patients faces and bodies, is why they tout her praises as a premier cosmetic surgeon. Her knowledge and skill delivers surgical and non-invasive results to perfection. And just as important, her patients are impressed and thankful for the importance she places on each and every person who walks into her office. Dr. Gohar trained in General Surgery with a fellowship in Cosmetic Surgery. She explains... “I come from a family of physicians; three generations of physicians. I always looked up to my parents, and as they say... medicine is in my blood. My father Dr. Kevin Gohar, was a board certified Orthopedic surgeon, and my mother is a registered nurse with a Masters Degree in public administration.” Dr. Gohar says she developed a love for healing after seeing some of the patients her father helped during the Iran/Iraq war. According to Dr. Gohar, he had to be surgically creative when treating the massive war wounds he encountered. He successfully accomplished the reconstructive surgeries he performed using various skin grafts and muscle flaps. Dr. Gohar was fascinated by the pictures she saw, and over-whelmed by how grateful all of his patients were. When she later trained in Trauma Surgery, she was the first person her colleagues called to repair major lacerations and surgical wounds.

Some of them no doubt you have either had or heard about — after all this is LA. But there are other cosmetic surgery fixes you may never have heard of before, and which just might prove to be the solution for a problem area that you can’t wait to get rid of. Most certainly Dr. Gohar has her share of celebrity and VIP patients who trust her to keep them looking red carpet perfect 24/7—360 days a year. But just as important are you and I — regular people who may not be walking the red carpet, but who nevertheless want to stay looking as young as possible for as long as possible. So here we go.

ST: With many lasers claiming to do so many things what makes the Fraxel Laser different? What are the "Repair" and "Restore" benefits it offers? Dr. Gohar: The Fraxel Repair Laser is the ONLY laser that delivers the capability of conventional ablative lasers without a long downtime. The Fraxel laser ablates the outer damaged layer of the skin, resulting in new skin. Fraxel has established a track record of solid clinical research, FDA clearances, and proven results by affecting only a fraction of the skin with thousands of tiny microscopic laser spots offering dramatic results. Skin tightening, correcting wrinkles, helping eliminate acne scars, stretch marks, sun damage, hyper-pigmentations — all without invasive surgery procedures, and while stimulating collagen growth. Beverly Hills Cosmetic & Laser Center is one of the few facilities in the world to have both the Fraxel Repair and Restore available to offer individualized laser treatment plans. Fraxel Restore Laser rejuvenates the skin by helping to eliminate acne scars, wrinkles, stretch marks and other imperfections such as hyper-pigmentations, with less downtime than many other lasers. Fraxel Restore helps lighten age spots and sun damage, while stimulating collagen and tightening the skin.

During a patient’s consultation, we discuss the pros and cons of each procedure in detail and together decide what is the best procedure to meet their goal.
Do many men have Cosmetic Surgery and what surgeries do they want done?

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you recommend Breast Augmentation after or before pregnancy?
Dr. Gohar: I usually recommend Breast Augmentation after pregnancy. Patients generally gain and loose weight with pregnancy, and breast tissue looks and feels differently after pregnancy. Dr. Gohar: The Brazilian Buttock Augmentation is very popular. We harvest fat from areas in which there is an excess; for example the abdomen and transfer the fat to the buttock. If the patient happens to be extremely thin and there is not enough fat to harvest, then I use buttock implants to give them a Kim Kardashian look.
What surgery is “fashionable” right now?
Dr. Gohar: After a chemical peel clients refer to their previously damaged skin being as smooth as a baby's bottom. We have special peels for those with pigmentation issues, peels for acne, and peels for those who want to look amazing for a special event.
What about Chemical Peels?
Dr. Gohar: Leg veins fall into different categories: Spider Veins, Reticular Veins, and Varicose Veins. Treatments vary for each problem. For example, I do injections for Spider Veins, and Radio-frequency Ablation or Surgical Excision for Varicose Veins.
What can you recommend for leg veins?
Which surgery do you perform more frequently? Dr. Gohar: I’m known for high-definition liposuction
and love to “re-create” a youthful body whether surgically or non-surgically. But by far my most popular procedure is the Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and Mommy Makeovers.
BEFORE
4 weeks post surgery
Dr. Gohar: After pregnancy and breast feeding, a female's physique changes. Patients come in with complaints of sagging breasts, loose abdominal muscles, stretch marks and excess abdominal fat. Treatment varies based on presentations but usually involves Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), Liposuction and Breast Lift. During surgery I excise excess hanging tissue and stretch marks created as skin stretches. I’ve developed a technique to simultaneously shape the flanks “love handles” and tighten loose abdominal muscles. My patients love their flat abdomen and new curves after surgery. One of my patient’s told me it was the first time she could actually see a waistline! l

Why You Need To “FEED” Your Skin with Vitamin D
By Celeste Hilling Skin Care Expert & CEO of Skin Authority GOT Vitamin D? Not likely.
One billion people worldwide are estimated to be Vitamin D deficient. I have researched Vitamin D for years because it is made IN the skin. Vitamin D is the ONLY vitamin the body makes (all others come from food). After being made in the skin, Vitamin D is converted to a hormone. When Vitamin D hormone levels are balanced, many skin conditions such as rosacea, eczema, psoriasis and heavy wrinkling greatly improve.
Seasonal variations (dreary weather in the winter, geographical location and aging reduce our skin’s ability to manufacture Vitamin D from sunlight. Contrary to what many believe, few foods “naturally” have Vitamin D. Foods which are a natural source of D and include:
• Fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel) are among the best sources. Beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks provide small amounts.
•
Almost all U.S. milk supply is fortified with 400 IU of Vitamin D per quart. Foods made from milk (ice cream, cheese are mostly not fortified.
•
• Vitamin D is added to many break-

• Some mushrooms in stores; the Vitamin D content is boosted by exposing them to ultraviolet light.
This source was the most compelling for me as a viable option for vegans or those following a raw diet and, resulted in my company, Skin Authority, partnering with Dole Nutrition Institute for the first whole food source of Vitamin D on the market. Like everything else in life, you need balance when it comes to Vitamin D. A rule of thumb: USDA daily requirement is 600 IU per day. Many physicians recommend a higher level—about 1,200 IU per day. In recent years, more research has been done as to what can slow the breakdown of collagen and build new collagen, even as the skin ages. Collagen is the major protein in skin; its fibers support the shape of the skin. Collagen formation and breakdown takes place in the dermis, the thicker, firm layer of the skin that lies beneath the paper-thin outer layer, or epidermis, just like a mattress lies beneath a sheet. In youthful skin, collagen is firm, taut and abundant—like a new mattress. Just as a foam mattress over time becomes flatter in places and creased as structure breaks down, aging skin begins to sag and wrinkle when collagen is diminished and fragmented. As skin ages, free radicals (which are associated with UV rays from the sun, environmental pollution, poor diet, and just normal aging) and lead to increased production of enzymes which further break down collagen. People in their 80's have four times more broken collagen than people in their 20's. Nutraceuticals are products that are often used in an anti-aging regime. Ingestion of a nutraceutical containing collagen protein can affect the hydration of the skin, the appearance of fine lines, and the skin’s smoothness by stimulating collagen production “from the inside out.” Whole collagen proteins are not easily absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. In order to be useful to the body, collagen must be hydrolyzed, or broken down into smaller pieces (peptides) that can be digested by the body. Once in the skin, these collagen peptides may trigger the body to make more of its own natural collagen. The peptides also cause the existing collagen to become stronger and more resilient, which may mean increased skin smoothness and suppleness. Finally, collagen attracts and holds moisture which leads to increased skin hydration. Beauty Nectar™ is a hydrolyzed collagen supplement that also contains vitamin C, resveratrol, grape seed extract, kiwi seed extract, and ceramides. A clinical study by Ashieda® found subjective increases in skin hydration, firmness, smoothness, and suppleness, and decreases in the appearance of fine lines and pores. Subjects also reported that their skin looked more nourished, plump, and bright with improved skin tone. Beauty Nectar™ is a nutraceutical with a potent role in an anti-aging regimen. l

4 BODY DIET — The Ultimate Detox Donese Worden, NMD
Medical & Naturopathic Physician DO YOU NEED TO DETOX? WHICH TYPE OF DETOX? HOW DO YOU SAFELY DO IT? IS NOW A GOOD TIME?
AS an N.M.D. (Naturopathic Medical Doctor), I am
constantly asked about detoxing. There are many ways to detox: diet, supplements, herbs, homeopathy and chelating agents. But keep in mind that we have 4 distinct selves or bodies that most likely need to be cleansed. It’s not just the physical body. We need to work on the WHOLE to rejuvenate and heal. Most people need to shed unwanted emotional and mental issues as well pounds from their bodies. Give yourself time each day to do a practice that quiets your mind so it can detox, organize and repair. Music is a great way to shift environments and work with the mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. When you feel connected, the rest of the “bodies” are easier to work on.
DO I NEED TO DETOX? If your physician says you don’t have a health condition that could be compromised by fasting or juicing, go for it. We collect toxins as we age. By detoxing our spirit with our body we find positive shifts without feeling overwhelmed. Most people feel great at the end of a detox program. If you don’t feel better within a few days speak with your doctor, or just slow down; let your body deal with the dump. WHAT TYPE OF DETOX? Heavy Metals • Solvents • Chemicals
An environmentally trained doctor can test you for heavy metals and other pollutants. Measurements of chlorinated compounds and solvents can be done from serum and adipose samples. Urinary measurements can be taken for heavy metals, organophosphate pesticide metabolites and phthalates. If you test positive (most people do) you need a program supervised by a doctor. This is not one you can do on your own.
Safe and usually gentle, these detox options are found in a health food store or with a practitioner specializing in homeopathic medicine. If you take any prescription medications at all, then consider doing this with supervision.
Lifeline Stem Cell Skin Care Defensive DAY Moisture Serum SPF 15 A serum/moisturizer in one. Stem Cell extracts accelerate cellular proliferation; vitamins A, E, B, D and antioxidants stimulate skin’s ability to protect, renew and replace damaged collagen fibers with new ones.
$160
Lifeline Stem Cell Skin Care Eye Firming Complex with HSC-X
Human stem cell extracts (HSC-X) help increase skin thickness, and make skin less vulnerable to premature aging. Natural proteins, peptides and growth factors stimulate collagen production to firm and tighten skin, reduce puffiness and brighten dark circles. $97
Inexpensive and easy to find. Could contradict with medications/hormones. Herbs are like drugs with reactions like drugs. If the company selling the herb won’t show you the Certificate of Analysis (test for heavy metal and other toxins) don’t use the products. You could end up putting more toxins in—than getting out!
Juice or Food: Advocates of juice fasting say it's one of the best things to do for
health. The American Dietitian Association and some medical doctors are critical of juice diets, claiming that juice fasts can result in vitamin deficiencies, muscle breakdown and have sounded the alarm over risks from lengthy or repeated fasts. If you have blood sugar issues, fruit may not be a good idea. Some protein powders for use in juice can reduce protein deficiency. I recommend cranberry or pea protein; both are hypoallergenic with a great amino acid profile compared to WHEY which many have sensitivities to. Focus on nutrient dense foods and greens. The internet is filled with tons of Green Smoothie recipes. When you juice a fruit or veggie (organic or not) you can still get large amounts of lead and arsenic. Heavy metals are in the ground and in our water. When you concentrate them you could get too much at once. With organic fruits and vegetables you aren’t concentrating the pesticides and herbicides. For a juice fast, I recommend doing it for one week and organic. Rotate foods so you get different vitamins and minerals from each.
H OW OFTEN: Most do well with a cleanse twice a year. Spring and Fall are good
times to connect to our planet and ourselves and detox all 4 Bodies. A 7-10 day detox is typical and surprisingly easy. Strenuous fasts are hard on the body and should be under controlled circumstances with the recommendation of your physician. l

What Is A Stem Cell and WHY is it GOOD for my skin? Stem Cells are building blocks of your skin with an ability to replace damaged and diseased cells. As they divide, they can proliferate for long periods into millions of new skin cells. As we age Stem Cells lose potency. Results are fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and sagging skin. Scientists at Lifeline Stem Cell Skin Care discovered that human non-embryonic Stem Cell extracts can renew skin and stimulate your skin’s abilities to repair itself.

While few might think of the office while steaming up the atmosphere in the bedroom, a compelling new book proves that the two settings are more closely linked than many would admit. Aimed at those who’ve accepted the fact that they’ll likely be working ‘forever’, feisty Scotswoman Avril Millar’s groundbreaking guide transports confidence and success in the bedroom to a financially comfortable future. If, like many women, “your pension will barely feed a mouse and your knight in shining armour has failed to materialize”, Millar suggests we redefine our work to give us the lifestyle that we wish to become accustomed with. The 61-year old ‘solopreneur’ and mother of two, promises this is a simple matter of using our knowledge and confidence about sex to build varied and stimulating careers. “Modern women today know how to call the shots in their sex lives,” Millar says. “Now they need to start using the language of sex to create a range of work they will love for a lifetime, and that will make them happy, secure and independent.” From 'Oral' to 'Coming First’, through to ‘Friends with Benefits’ and ‘Lubrication’, work (and sex) will never seem quite the same again.

Millar is a former engineer, teacher, wealth manager, serial business woman — and now a non-executive director and consultant to many businesses in Europe. “I’ve never been happier at work — or better paid. The ‘Kama Sutra’ approach has worked for me, and it can work for you too.”

The Grand Theft Auto franchise has been around for many, many years beginning in October 1997. They are getting ready very soon to release GTA V... and there is little doubt that it will be a fantastic game. I’ve played all of the Grand Theft Auto games and they are superb. GTA V is set to be released on MAJOR consoles and computers. I want to play this game on the new Play Station 4 (it looks like a holiday release date). ROCKSTAR, developers of GTA recieved the highest Game Metascore of all time; 98/100. GTA V will be based in the LA area, and be the largest playable world to date. Battlefield is one of the best online multiplayer games ever made with its amazing graphics and detail. The new Battlefield 4 will be powered by DICE's Frostbite 3 engine and be the most realistic game to date. The crew working on this game are some of the best game developers in the world. Each Xbox will have a voice recognition system included and will come with some intense hardware such as a 8-core AMD Jaguar CPU, 500 GB hard drive and 8GB DDR3 RAM. James F. Pomeroy
Lives and thrives in the fast lane with one mind set. The question is NOT what you want in life. The questions is how BAD do you want it? Story By Suzanne Takowsky
Photography by David Sobel
Art Production By John Booth
“If you respect yourself, then you will apply that to your mission and your goals — whatever your mission and goals in life are. Then, it’s your responsibility no matter what anyone thinks or believes that you honor your life with integrity. That you don’t hurt anyone along the way to getting what you want. I believe this applies to anyone who is passionate about reaching their potential.” — James Pomeroy LIFE is full
of dreamers. People who wander year after year hoping and praying that what they want will somehow fall from the sky and drop into their laps. Maybe they will have a knock at the door and open it to find success and happiness on the other side. Better yet… spend a dollar at a gas station and discover they are the proud owner of a million dollar lottery ticket. AHHHH… What a feeling! I am 100% positive that each one of us has at one time or another had a fantasy of getting what we want handed to us on a sliver platter. And without a doubt, that would be absolutely fantastic. But the reality of life here on earth as we know it — so far— seems to be more about what we don’t get, than what we do. And what we do get. Well, let’s just say the percentages of people who win the lottery or are handed their dream-come-true on a silver platter are microscopic teeny tiny compared with the billions of people who struggle every day to find meaning in their lives, and try their hardest to muster up the strength and know-how to take care of themselves and their families. Reaching our goals and fulfilling our dream-come-true usually runs last on a leg-long list of must-do’s each day. The bottom line is 99% of us get no “free lunch” in life. We pay now, or we pay later, but we always pay in one way or another. The day-to-day for the majority of us is about work, work and more work. And much of that time goes to jobs and under circumstances we don’t like very much. Blessed are those who actually love what they do, and get paid for doing it. So, what about those people we see who seem to have it all? You know… those LUCKY people who seem to get what they want in life. Well, as much as we might like to think it’s LADY LUCK that gets people what they want... I have spoken to many people over many years who have reached an enviable level of success and accomplished the goals they set out to reach. And, from their point of view LUCK had little to do with it. What you and I might see as a charmed life filled with one lucky streak after another, is in actuality a life filled with many hurdles to overcome, numerous disappointments to work around, steadfast determination and mind blowing motivation NOT TO GIVE UP. EVER! That’s it folks. That’s what it takes to get what we want, or come darn close. And it’s hard. Most times it can be unbearable. But it’s the inner strength we build, and ability to keep plugging along regardless
of what tomorrow brings that is the TRUE winning lottery ticket in life. Finding a way to work with, and work around what life hands you… that’s success. And, that’s what separates the people who live extraordinary lives from those who are never quite able to reach the finish line. My interview with James Pomeroy was less about his successes — of which he has many than it was about the road of twists and turns in his life he has traveled along the way. James is an überfascinating, successful, well-educated, ultra-handsome, hysterically good humored, and well-traveled man (also a bachelor I might add with a magnetic personality). What was supposed to be a one-hour interview turned into three, and we could have easily made it five, but we each had appointments to keep. James and I didn’t stop talking for one minute, and seriously everything that came out of this man’s mouth was fun, fascinating and insightful. James is an East coast kind of guy: grew up on Cape Cod, went to school, started a business, bought a house and raised a family there. He travels the world for his non-profit organization, Velocity, and for business. His consulting and investment group ARGO structures national and international finance engineering. A few months ago, he made the decision to move to Los Angeles to live, although he will maintain his East coast residence as well. He says the weather, West coast atmosphere, people, location for business and travel options are hard to beat. I say... Welcome to LA. Over the many years I have been publishing a magazine, I have acquired a fondness for positive people who look at life as an advantage rather than a hardship. What I most enjoyed about my interview with James is his overwhelming zest for the ongoing process of life, and the emphasis he places on the value of maintaining a positive outlook. Divorced for just over 10-years, James has two children he sees often. His daughter is 26, and his son is 21, and they along with his ex-wife still live in Cape Cod. AND get this... James says he and his ex-wife are friends. Truly, I think he is one of the few men I have ever spoken to who says he and his “ex” are — to put it in his words… “amazing friends”. He praised her for being a good mother and a good person. His exact quote… “We spent a lot of time after the divorce trying to figure things out, and we have these amazing children together, and we love them and want
to make certain that they have good lives ahead of them. The way that we can best accomplish this is by us supporting each other.” Just got to love this guy! Looking back, James has the normal feelings that come with marriage, and divorce. Most of us can totally identify with the wisha, coulda, woulda and, let’s face it, even though adults might want to believe divorce doesn’t affect their children, experts say... not true. Even if children don’t verbalize their feelings of hurt, doesn’t mean they aren’t. Divorce is never a happy thing for children to experience. James says he and his former wife worked long and hard to discover the best alternative they can to keep their children close, on track and moving forward. He says it’s an ongoing and heartfelt process on a daily basis to keep things positive with regard to him and his former spouse. It’s their united front that helps their kids the most. This is a terrific lesson we all need to learn whether with a former spouse, current spouse or life partner. I remember a quote I heard years ago “...Most people treat their friends with more consideration, empathy and patience than they do the person they are married to… YIKES! Reflecting back on his own childhood, James says he is blessed that his parents gave him the security of a solid family life. His parents now in their 80s, have been married for 62 years. They are retired and live in Sarasota, Florida where James visits them often. As with most of the couples of from that generation, James’ father was the breadwinner of the family, and his mother a stay-at-home housewife and mother to him and his three siblings. James says he is still amazed at their “teamwork as a couple” — a mutual “couple agreement” they established when they met and married, and have continued even after all of these years. Could this “agreement” be the winning formula for marriage success? “My dad talks about my mom as if she’s 19-years old,” he says with a laugh. “And he is the ultimate alpha male… always looking after her. When I was growing up, and still to this day my mother always says... ‘Whatever your dad says.’ When they met this was the agreement they made as a couple and for their marriage. And as time has gone on neither of them changed the rules. with an ongoing, daily commitment to make things better, then we are waging a no-win war against ourselves. I believe a successful marriage is based on finding a cheerleader within your partner to support you and — you them. It’s not about me or you. It’s about us.” Most of us have trouble fulfilling one goal in one lifetime. James has managed to initiate many goals into his life, and in keeping within his positive mind set, there is more to come. As our interview continued, there is little doubt his youthful hopes and dreams didn’t play out as he expected. Nevertheless, he is a man who is not afraid to go after what he wants. He has always had he says, foresight to recognize an opportunity when he sees it, and be able to switch gears in mid-stream to accommodate and accomplish what he needs to do. There were moments of reflection during our interview where etches of past pain and disappointment flashed across his face. Moments of recounting past experiences that were not wanted or intended, but necessary on his path to personal growth and professional expansion. Listening to this man, and learning about the monumental hurdles he has overcome, it’s an exhilarating realization to recognize that here are no limits in our lives as long as we don’t make them, and as long as we stay determined to overcome any obstacles. Growing up, and throughout his school days into college, James refers to himself as the ultimate jock. He loved all sports, and played all sports, but he especially loved playing baseball. From as far back as he can remember his dream and goal, and everything in his mind and body propelled him towards a professional baseball career. Nineteen years old, in collage and playing baseball for the Detroit Tigers in one of the most memorable and important games of his career so far — against the Chicago White Socks. James (a short stop) took the bat in his hands, hit the ball, ran the bases and slid across home base. He also ripped his knee apart and was critically injured. And that was it. All those years of daily baseball practice and hard work, hopes and dreams as he inched his way toward a long, exciting and very lucrative professional baseball career were gone. ST: How does a 19-year old face and recover from such a devastating experience? Living your life until that fateful day had been all about playing professional baseball. Then, in a few minutes it was over forever. JP: I think you just cry. At 19-years old you say to yourself that your life is over. I can’t really remember being 19, but I can remember that day. Because it was an out of town game, after they took me to the hospital and into the operating room, I came out with a full-leg cast on. All my managers wanted to do at that point was get me back home as safely as they could, so they bought me a first-class ticket, and put me on an American Airlines flight back to Cape Cod. I don’t remember much else about my accident, but I remember the plane made one stop in New York. I was on the plane licking my wounds and after we took off, I found myself sitting next to Archie Albright. At 19, I remember thinking I was sitting next to an “old guy” (laughs). Archie was in his 50s. Now that I’m in my 50s, being 50 doesn’t seem old at all. Archie struck up a conversation with me and coming to find out, he was at the game with a few of his buddies and saw my accident. He spent the rest of the flight talking my ear off. By the time we landed he had practically adopted me. I didn’t have a clue who Archie Albright was, or what he did, or how powerful a businessman he was. But on that flight he decided to take me under his wing, hired me to work for him and moved me to New York. I told my parents what I was planning to do and that was it. If I had gone back to Cape Cod to live, my father would have made me immediately go back to college. I moved to New York and worked Monday through Thursday for Archie carrying his briefcase, papers, whatever he needed me to do. On weekends I headed back to Cape Code, and Friday until Sunday worked for my dad in his real estate company with the 35 people who worked there, and helped close leads he had gathered during the week...something I’d done while living at home and going to school. On that plane, I went from a world of hurt recognizing my baseball career was over, to getting a job with a powerful businessman who taught me about finance and investments.
“Looking at the personal and professional relationships between men and women today, if we don’t find an acceptable meeting ground based in partnership with an ongoing, commitment to make things better — then we are waging a no-win war against ourselves. It’s not about me or you. It’s about us.”

(Archie E. Albright, a Yale Law School graduate was one of the first senior corporate managers recruited by Wall Street in the bull markets of the 1960's. He served as the president and chief executive of the nonpartisan Foreign Policy Association in New York and led two technology companies to increasing sales of billions of dollars before his retirement. He was a premier financier and business mogul. He passed away in 1997).
This was my induction into the world of big business and as it turned out, it was an easier transition than I thought. All those years growing up and helping my father and watching the motivation and dedication he had everyday to take care of business. Those years set the tone for me working with Archie. Right from the start, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but in life anything worth having never is. Back then, I was too busy in the day-to-day to think about what working with Archie truly meant. There I was living at the Pierre Hotel in New York sourrounded with the high-voltage business and personal life of Archie and his partners and friends. Then, I would go home to Cape Cod and sit on the beach. Talk about a drastic change in environment. From lunch at the Waldorf to sitting in the sand eating a hot dog.
James says his father is well-educated (speaks seven languages) and a strict disciplinarian who although his personal passion leaned toward athletics (in his youth he played baseball for the Boston Celtics) decided to go into the real estate business once he had a family. As far as his father was concerned, education was everything. He insisted his children attend college and forget about sports. Harvard or Stanford according to James were his father’s first choices for him. Instead, he headed to the University of Maine for his under-grad and what else... its highly-regarded sports affiliate programs. When it became clear that James’ chosen path was sports, his father had him sign an agreement between them that James’ would have a financial obligation to send a portion of the money he earned to the family until he completed his under-grad education. In essence, if James wasn’t going to get a quality education by darn he was going to feel the financial pinch of giving money to his dad. What James says he didn’t understand then became clear after he successfully completed his under-grad studies and his father handed him a check for the exact amount of money he had sent to him over the years. What did James take away from his tithing experience? “I learned that the only thing that can’t be taken away from you is your education.” ST: What did your father think about you working for Archie Albright? It seems his hope for you becoming an educated man were finally approaching. JP: I was rasied in a family where education was everything. My father insisted all his children have quality professions. My sister is a teacher and an accomplished musician; one of my brothers is a contractor who constructs multi-million dollar homes; my other brother is a successful and highly-regarded surgeon. As the oldest child, I realized early on that I needed to find a profession that everybody else wasn’t good at, and make it my passion. I felt that was my ticket to my independence, and that’s what baseball meant to me. I figured out in baseball you could hit a baseball and be wrong six out of 10 times and still get in the Hall of Fame (laughs). Baseball became my passion and I was very good at it. Then it was gone. But working for Archie, I began to see there was another profession I could be good at. Being around Archie and his Wall Street buddies gave me a chance to learn about the world of business from the inside out. It was a crash course in the competitive financial arena and something my father identified with as a business owner himself. The main thing my father was concerned about was that I maintain my integrity and be honest to myself. He taught us to respect ourselves, and when we look in the mirror like who we see by respecting the choices we make. If you respect yourself... you apply that to your mission, to your goals — whatever your mission and goals in life are. Then it becomes your responsibility no matter what anyone thinks or believes for you to honor yourself with integrity. That you don’t hurt anyone along the way to getting what you want out of life. I believe this applies to anyone who is passionate about achieving his or her goals. And, this thought process must continue to be an ongoing responsibility throughout life in both our personal and professional choices. ST: With your father being successful in the real estate business and you working and living with him for so many years, what did you take away from his work ethic? JP: I worked with my father in many areas of his business. In high school and for a couple of years after, my focus was on baseball, but it wasn’t only the physical demands of sports I learned from. The mental concentration, determination, perseverance and non-stop need to succeed that goes hand-in-hand with the sports profession. My accident showed me the vulnerability of life, and how in one minute everything can change. Then what? For me it was a plane ride in a full-leg cast sitting next to a big business millionaire. But for years I watched my father get up each day and go to work at his real estate firm to support his family. He gave his best every day and showed us the importance of setting goals and not giving up when things get tough. He also taught us that where relationships are concerned — personal or business — to not only think about what we need, but find out and understand what our partner needs. Is that person capable of giving you what you need? Are you capable of giving that person what they need? You have to be each other’s biggest supporter whether at home or with the people you work with, and it starts with communication. My parents were each other’s biggest supporter, and still are. They worked as a team at home, and my father stressed the importance of teamwork with those in his business. Teamwork he said, produces the best results. Words I impart on my own children and business partners. continued on page 40

ST: Speaking of teamwork what do you see as NOT working between men and women. I don’t know how it is out East, but out here in the Wild West everybody is single and nobody seems to be able to find a “suitable” mate. JP: I think for men it’s fundamental to understand what it is exactly we ask for, and what we do with it when we get it. We find these incredible women and, then blow it. Men know how to conquer BUT then what? Once we have what we want, then what? Where do we go from there? Not to sound sexist, but sadly it seems men just don’t take the time to get to know or understand their partner. It’s not just with our wives and girlfriends, but with our children, coworkers, and especially someone in business with whom we are disagreeing. One thing I learned working with Archie is nothing is black and white; wrong or

right. There’s a middle ground we can never forget to explore which helps us to get to know the people in our personal and business lives. By going out of our way to take the time to understand who a person is and what their goals, intentions and expectations are, it’s like building a bridge together. Knowing what another person wants and what you want, and then working to a compromise that satisfies both people — now that is what makes a successful personal relationship and ongoing professional partnerships work for the benefit of all.
From baseball to Wall Street. Barely 20-years old at the time his baseball career officially ended and he headed to New York to work under the wing of investment and banking magnate Archie Albright, James’ ability to overcome the tremendous disappointment he had been handed could have ended in more disappointment as he entered the world of big business. Instead, he says, he took it as a challenge and jumped into his new role as Albright’s helper with all the enthusiasm for getting the education his father had wanted for him all along. Looking back to those days James says it seems almost surreal that out of the blue, on probably the worst day of his life sitting on a plane alone in a full leg cast, that a new future opened up for him thanks to Albright. For all of us — any age— being able to recognize an opportunity for change, growth, adventure, expansion or self-realization is never a bad thing. James says, the limits we put on ourselves throughout our lives is about fear. Fear of the unknown is the culprit that keeps us from reaching our potential. James’ business in international finance ventures and investments takes him around the world, and puts him in the orbit of many people from different educational and professional levels in many different cultures. He says that’s where the art of listening and communication comes into play. Along the way, James co-founded Argo Advisors Group Inc, where he serves as Managing Director. Argo serves as a private merchant banker to people of power and influence, engineering winning solutions for capital and worthy projects domestically and abroad. Argo has organized more than five billion dollars of assets in less than two years of its existence and acquired a commercial/industrial real estate developer and insurance group. (www.theargogroupllc.com). James’ business of designing and engineering financial instruments that attract institutional investors is what ultimately gave him the much needed affiliations that were so important when he founded his non-profit organization, Velocity — a cutting-edge sports and education training camp-like environment for kids, teens and young adults that encourages and supports them as they climb to the next levels in their lives. Through his knowledge of sports, his noteworthy affiliation with Albright, and his expertise in big business finance, James says his experiences were the writing on the wall for the international work he is now doing with Velocity. ST: What did you learn working with Albright? JP: Archie was amazing. He had a circle of friends and business acquaintances few people even at high level can imagine. I think about his contributions to the history of our nation and it’s incredible. He was a true visionary and he met adversity with challenge, quick thinking and precision timing. The most important thing I learned from Archie is there are certain rules of the universe. One being that everybody has to work hard. So I say to people… don’t tell me how hard you are working… hard work is what makes a person successful. The key is to find something you love, and persist at it until it is your passion. Because if you love what you do, then it doesn’t bother you how hard or long you work. Another thing I discovered working with Archie is the importance of strong mentors in life to teach you, guide you, and tell you when you are full of shit. It sounds harsh, but knowing you have a back-up team you can rely not only to be in your corner, but be honest with you about what they see— makes all the difference. My best friend I’ve known since school and I talk every day, just as much as I speak with my brothers. And, we talk straight with each other no matter what it’s about. When you are a boy, teenager, young man just starting out and even into your adult years as you continue in your professional goals, it is essential for men to have strong rolls models, partners and business associates around them who tell it like it is. It’s like a support and conscious team who won’t let things slide, and won’t let you get away with anything. And inturn, you have to be the same with them.
ST: I guess this is a mano y mano thing. What is it like for men living in an Alpha World. JP: Let me say this… living and trying to keep up in an alpha world doesn’t mean men don’t have times when we have to step back and acknowledge the fact that although we were dedicated to something we wanted and did the best we could ... we still failed. Success is not permanent. Success is about courage. Having the courage to step up and do what needs to be done. Courage to go after something. Courage to ask for help if you need it. Courage to accept that help and not fight it. Courage to show appreciation to those in your world who are helping you succeed. Courage to be able to make a mistake and go on. In business I can be a ranter… I can go around and around discussing and arguing; whatever it takes to get my point across. Then, I step back and listen. I am one of those people who won’t leave the room until everything is discussed and settled, or at least we are in agreement to disagree. But in my world, what we do, we are going to do as a team. That goes for everything whether it’s my personal family or business family. If everything is out in the open and up for discussion, then there is hope for success. It’s when people have different agendas and no communication or should I say — no honest communication that things fall apart.

An Inspiring Sports & Education Program ST: Let’s talk about Velocity your non-profit foundation for children and teenagers. How does it work? JP: Our baseball foundation starts with kids who are young — some are three years old. Sports of any kind is a common ground and something kids enjoy and learn from and it’s a starting point to teach kids at every age about working as a team. It’s incredible to watch their response. I’ve seen kids five years old on a baseball field, swinging little safety bats and running around the bases, and even at that age, they start to understand special concepts and team sports and what they need to do to be a part of the team. Children are even more proud when their mothers and fathers come to watch what they do. But it’s the kids that might be living with their mother and have no father in their lives or living without either parent; those kids are the reason behind why I started Velocity in the first place. At Velocity, even if a child or teenager has no family to come and watch — we want them to see that we are there to support them. So, for our practices and games everybody cheers everyone. Everyone gets praise for what they do no matter what it is.
James says he made the decision to start Velocity more than 10 years ago, after reaping the rewards of his business success and deciding it was time to use his resources to make a difference in the future of kids and families. Velocity’s sports/education program goes far beyond sports programs. Activities are geared to teach empowerment and self-esteem. Children, teenagers, families and supporters come together to participate in educational resources, health instruction, fitness training and counseling, in state-of-the-art facilities with professional instructors. From day one, James played a major role in program development and says Velocity has helped thousands of children, training them in sports safety. James credits his son for giving him the idea for Velocity. The two were tossing a baseball and James realized he could use sports as a connection to reach small kids and teenagers and instill the idea of bettering their lives with teamwork and education. Most kids in the Velocity program come from broken families, and are being raised without a paternal presence in their lives.
ST: When I was growing up we were always outside playing and learning how to get along with others. Our kids today grow up in front of a TV or computer screen and don’t seem to have a firm connection to family or friends. JP: Kids today are raised with the internet and every means to communicate, learn or be motivated by what they see on TV or online. It’s almost impossible for parents to compete with that. Information is available — good and bad in a heartbeat. Most parents don’t know what their childrens are looking at online and that makes it easier for them to go to others for answers. It makes our job as parents difficult. We are losing our connection as role models and mentors to our kids. Just like my own father when I was a teenager and going in one direction when he wanted me to go in another. Except back then, there weren’t as many bad options available as today. Our message to children has to be based in love and based on our experience. Sure there comes a time when we have to let them go out into the world and have their own experiences. But when they go out, they have to have the tools they need to make decisions that will improve— not destroy their chances at a good life. Through sports, Velocity is bringing children and teenagers together with adults who they see as supportive and nurturing. Most kids we see are either fatherless, or have fathers who are not involved in their lives. Playing on a baseball team is the closest they’ve been to having a structured environment with male role models. Using that “IN” we can crossover into a teaching environment where they can learn about many things in a relaxed setting. My goal in Velocity is to get these kids to see how getting an education will improve their lives. And I have to say it again… education is the one thing nobody can ever take away from you. ST: The biggest challenge facing kids today is that most grow up in single-parent home; most are raised by their working mothers and rarely get to see their fathers if at all. Children are affected not having a solid, responsible, supportive and continuous father figure in their lives. Your foundation is giving kids a chance to play and learn with incredible male role models by their side. JP: I‘m certain one of the most destructive things adults do when they break up is talk badly about the ex-spouse to kids or talk negatively when kids can hear. If you are the child and always hear how horrible and no good one of your parents is … how are you going feel about yourself? Most likely that you are no good as well. Marriage takes work and divorce takes even more work. Being a single parent is not easy. But just because a marriage ends doesn’t mean your commitment to your kids ends. Whatever happened — happened and you can’t change it. But as men... as fathers we have to recognize the importance of our place in our children’s lives because although your ex might never be your best friend again, your kids will be your kids for life. As fathers, we must move forward with this in mind. I will be the first to say it that it’s generally the men who don’t know to communicate after a relationship breaks up and because of that our children suffer. Male role models are important to our children as they grow. We need to let them know how much they mean in our lives and be responsible in teaching them what they need to grow into responsible young adults. And, especially teach them that even if they fail in something it’s OK. Just learn from their mistakes, stand up and keep on going. l

“In the United States we are taught in two ways and we learn in 13 different ways. If you can read and recall, take a test and answer mathematical questions, you are considered a good student. But if you have to sing it to learn it, or draw a picture to learn, or do other sequencing things to learn — your test scores won’t be so good. Going to school and actually learning are two different things. As great as we are as a country we lack incredibly when it comes to teaching the masses. In any classroom there is a majority of kids left on their own. Higher learning kids find the motivation to expand their knowledge on their own. But slower learning kids never gain a desire to expand their education, and look for other things to fulfill their passion in life. That’s why a lot of kids turn to sports — not individual sports, but team sports. It brings them to a classroomlike environment where at last they are able to be in a group and understand and learn the next step and how to go about getting there. Too many kids grow up feeling “stupid” because their motivation and opportunity to learn was cut short through years of bad experiences in a classroom. I see young people in their 20s, who look back at their school experience after seeing themselves as failure, and can now bask in their successes in music, art, sports, technology... each is valuable in our lives.” // bhtmag.com // 41

CITY Year is an education-focused, nonprofit organization partnering with public schools to keep students in
school and on track to graduate. City Year AmeriCorps members (17-24) commit to one year, full-time service in schools, working as tutors, role models and mentors to students. Founded in Boston, in 1988, City Year works in 24 cities across the U.S. with affiliates in London and Johannesburg. Upon graduating from the University of California, San Diego cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Minor in Education Studies, I was considering careers options when I came across a blog written by a City Year corps member about her experiences working with inner city youth in Los Angeles as a full time tutor and mentor. I felt this was what I needed: a program offering young people an opportunity to tackle a current issue—the school dropout crisis— by giving a year of service in their ommunities while developing leadership and organizational skills by understanding their strengths and working on their weaknesses. I served with City Year Boston from 2011-2012 as a corps member. I returned for a second year from 2012-2013 as a team leader. These were the two most transformative years of my life. This fall I enter Harvard to pursue a Master’s degree in Education Policy and Management. Erica Zilinskas Communications Director City Year Los Angeles said, “Partnering with public schools, we work in partnership with school districts to support goals and give support required to make a difference with students who are at risk of dropping out. City Year corps members serve full-time in grades 3-9 targeting high-need schools and students. Research shows that students at the highest-risk to drop out can be identified as early as sixth grade. Corps members receive more than 300 hours of professional training to intervene based on three early warning indicators, the ABC’s – poor attendance, behavior, and course failure in math and English.” Younger than teachers, but older than pupils, corps members form a bond with students to help them succeed. THE MODEL: Whole School, Whole Child, with corps members giving additional help to teachers in classrooms, lead afterschool programs and school-wide initiatives to improve school culture. In Los Angeles the (2013-2014) program will reach 22 schools, enlist 275 corps members and help 5,300 students. Having served for two years, this is a life-changing experience adults should encourage and young people embrace. www.cityyear.org. l

The Artist & the Prisoner
Herman Wallace is the longest-serving prisoner in solitary confinement in the United States. For more than 40 years he has lived in a 6-foot-by-9-foot cell in a Louisiana prison. Jackie Sumell is a New York artist who made it her mission to chronicle on canvas and film the life of Herman. The first question she asked when she began her inquiry 12 years ago: “What kind of house does a man who has lived in a 6-foot-by-9-foot cell for over 30 years dream of?” The answer is surprising and powerful as is the life-changing journey of Wallace.

The Astrology Chart of
MAD MEN’s Don Draper
By Susan Miller
FOR all you die-hard fans of the award-winning AMC series “Mad
Men,” you know that the character of ad executive Don Draper was born Richard Whitman. Wanting to start a new life, Richard switched dog tags with fellow soldier Don Draper after he had been charred beyond recognition in the Korean War, making the stolen identity possible. From that point on, Richard Whitman became known as Don Draper. Richard (the Don Draper we now know) had a hard childhood. He was born to a prostitute who died in childbirth in a small town in Illinois. His stepmother, who resented the fact that her husband had a child out of wedlock, mistreated Richard. After his father died, Richard spent part of his childhood in a brothel. His stepmother took the family to stay with her sister and her sister's lover/husband, a pimp named "Uncle Mack." Thus, for Richard—the Don Draper character we all know and love—childhood was not happy.
Not only did Richard take the soldier's name, but his birth date — June 1, 1926. Richard's real birthday fell six months earlier, December 1, 1925, so they shared the same axis, Gemini-Sagittarius (signs precisely six months—180 degrees—apart). Both signs are brilliant communicators. The show’s writers left us breadcrumbs... the birthdates of these major characters were written into the script. Is it really possible to change your birthday and your birth chart? No, but we are taking poetic license and pretending that we can. I’ve helped many Hollywood writers in character development using astrology, but never by looking back onto already welldeveloped characters to create a fictional chart! (Mad Men writers didn’t ask me for help.) To maintain the integrity of the character, I‘ve given both characters, Richard Whitman, and Don Draper, Scorpio rising. In astrology, the rising sign is of equal importance to the sun sign. Richard Whitman was born on December 1, 1925, and I chose the birth time of 5:04 AM CST in Carpentersville, IL. For the June 1, 1926 chart—the true soldier, named Don Draper—I chose 3:54 PM PDT in Los Angeles, CA as his birth time. The fact that Richard Whitman's true mother was a prostitute gives credence to the idea that Don (Richard Whitman) has Scorpio rising. Scorpios often have to confront matters involving sex or reproduction at some point in their lives. Scorpio rules privacy and secrecy, and that describes the personality of our new Don Draper, who carried that quality into the realm of clandestine relationships and stolen identity. Don Draper’s
original birth date shows he was burdened with responsibility and may have had a proclivity for depression, due to Saturn rising in Scorpio. Don did feel isolated and abandoned at times. Later in life he likely found sex to be an antidote to his longing to be close to women, having been forced to grow up as a motherless child. Don was "smart" to trade in his birthday for the birthday of the deceased soldier. (I can't believe I just said that, but the June chart is the better one.) Uranus, located in the home sector in Whitman’s December (real) chart, created a series of unnerving changes in his childhood. When it comes to home, children need stability and the reliable advocacy of a parent, but Richard Whitman had neither. In the new chart, Uranus, the planet of the unexpected, is no longer in his home/family sector, but now in his creative house, the reason he was easily able to come up with brilliant ideas and why he was hailed as a rock star in advertising. Don has Jupiter, the giver of gifts and luck, conjunct the moon (women). This is an opposite influence of what he had before, and would now encourage a happy home life. Our new Don Draper married twice, and both his wives adored and supported him. His first wife, Betty, discovered his secret affairs and hidden identity, which prompted their divorce. The lesson: When we have superb aspects, we must work honestly and ethically to get the most out of them. In his original chart, Don’s moon was in analytical air-sign Gemini, one of the finest places to have the moon for a successful writing career. In his new chart, Don’s moon is in air-sign Aquarius, Scorpios often have giving talent in broadcasting and, some day, digital media. Air signs are great communicators, so no to confront matters matter which chart Don would have kept, he would have exceptional talent for creating award winning involving sex or advertising campaigns. His Scorpio rising would reproduction at some make him shrewd and effective at selling his clients (and the public) on the ad campaigns he created. point in their lives. One last comment: June 1, 1926 was the birth Scorpio rules privacy and date of Marilyn Monroe. Are the show's writers speaking to us in code by choosing that date for secrecy, and that Richard Whitman? The parallels between Marilyn’s describes the personality and Don’s lives are intriguing. Marilyn died an untimely death; let’s hope Don Draper can avoid of our new Don Draper, the same fate. Stay tuned. l
who carried that quality into the realm of clandestine relationships and stolen identity.

LA SWAG

ODELIA & ORNELA SAMUELS
CARSON'S HOUSE
THE swagest way to get to know a city
—eat! As professional foodies who can’t wait to share our cuisine experiences in Southern California we set out to find our hottest picks. The first place we hit is the swanky Carson's House which recently began serving lunch. Restaurant co-owner Scott Paletz (Steve Fowler the other owner) greeted and seated us and put us in the hands of our very sexy waiter Emmet Bell. We tried not to get lost in his sky blue eyes as we listened to his explanation of the lunch menu. It wasn’t easy! We ordered the Chefs Special Short Rib Dip which is braised for 12 hours in
Chef Johnny with his “monk ring”...
root beer, red wine, and coffee, then served with crispy onions, and horseradish cream on a French baguette. Mamas Meatballs Sub marinated with the oh-so-secret Chef Johnny Messina family marinara (Johnny's mother is his mentor) topped with Parmesan shaves on a French baguette. It was like eating homemade at grandmas. The Whitey Flat Bread with roasted garlic, spinach artichoke heart, ricotta, crispy basil and olive oil was to TO DIE FOR! And, the Big Salad— turkey, bacon, avocado, egg, swiss, cucumber, tomato, blue cheese, red wine vinaigrette (you can add Salmon or chicken) was delicious and healthy. The best was dessert! Tres sexy Chef Johnny made us fresh brownies and chocolate chip cookies. YUM! Our tongues made-out with our new sweethearts: the cookies! These tight dishes aren’t on the menu, but Johnny wanted to spoil us! Maybe if you ask nicely he’ll whip it up for you too :)))) Through lunch we enjoyed a delectable peach beer (there are 60 beers to choose from) and it tasted like a Bellini splashed with beer. Unique and super swag! The food was bomb; the decor was hip and artsy and the staff was super friendly with fun music. Overall it’s a fabulous place.
Chef Johnny Messina
Sexy and single, this alluring Sicilian considers himself an emotional chef. He lives in Hermosa Beach, loves art, color and sexy passionate girls, but says he considers himself a food monk. That’s why he wears a black ring and says he is married to the kitchen. Who will be the lucky girl to steal this passionate Italian’s heart? For the meantime, we can all enjoy his sexy cooking. The Halibut sushi was divine. The highlight of dinner was the meltin-your-mouth Toro Cut Roll served warm and crunchy, was orgasmic! Bouchon’s mouthwatering Filet & Fish
BOUCHON
US with Chef David Hands
TALENTED Chef Thomas Keller
of the French Laundry, Per Se and swag Beverly Hills Bistro Bouchon brings everything you need for an exquisite dining experience. The Bistro boasts a cozy, yet high-ceiling atmosphere with an eclectic crowd of entertainers, socialites and VIPs — all hungry for yummy food. Paper napkin menu holders give the restaurant a bistro feel, but it’s more upscale than a normal bistro. An ultra charming maitre d’ Thomas Mariano showed us to our table (dining next to us was beautiful Jessica Alba :)))). We ordered the Laitue-Bibb lettuce with garden herbs and vinaigrette, Salade de Tomates with heirloom tomatoes, sheep’s milk ricotta, with Bouchon Bakery Olive Bread and Pickled Ramps. For entrees, we had the Market Fish—fresh and delicious. The Filet Minion is mouth-watering juicy, just like Angelina Jolie's lips. For dessert, we couldn’t resist the oh-so scrumptious Profiteroles which were erect, and so perfectly shaped. The Delice au Chocolate with salted caramel and dark chocolate was as dreamy AS we imagine kissing Tyson Beckford. Maitre’d Thomas took us for a VIP tour through the enormous and squeeky clean kitchen. We also met handsome Chef David Hands, who was super-busy perfecting the orders placed in front of him. It was a front row seat at the opera watching him conduct his orchestra of cooks and hot su chefs. He is a master of his craft. He is as charming and as sexy in person as his photo in our column. Bouchon’s superb cuisine, elite customer service and highly-experienced staff makes this a restaurant not to miss. l
REDWOOD GRILLE
love businesses owned by siblings so Redwood Grille got Samuels love from the start. This James Bond style Grille is owned by brothers George & Spiros Bozikis who’ve been in the restaurant business for 22-years. Redwood Grille is humongous! There’s a smoochy-kissy outdoor patio that gets you in a South of France mood, but we sat inside because it was a bit chilly. George treated us like Queens of England seating us in a prime spot with a great view. He was adorable advising us on ultra-yummy specialties and making sure everything was perfect. His charming personality made our dining experience so fun we’ll totally go back. To start we had Grilled Octopus ...absolutely lush! Chef Spiros added a splash of pepper to the Poutine which made tingles of joy on our tongues. The Bone in Ribeye entree was scrumptious; the Filet cut like butter and the Salmon was sublime. We were STUFFFFFED or we would have also gotten the Spinach and Avacado Fettuccini. OMG a blend of roasted tomatoes/ creamed California Avacado. Need we say more? Looking divine was the Cowboy-cut Pork Chops with Rum Raisin Sauce we love rum :))). Next Time. Chef Spiros likes natural flavors so camouflaging food with sauces is a NO-NO. There was ZERO chance we were leaving without having dessert. Right on cue came the Chocolate Fudge Sin, New York Cheesecake and an Ice Cream Sundae. Let’s recap. Fun Chef. Swag restaurant.
