THE FIRST DROP

A DEEP FREEZE SMORGASBORD... A FEW THOUGHTS WHILE waiting for the snow to melt, which should be just about the time we all arrive at Expo West… Who would have thought that the fresh, healthy beverage (FHB) space in the produce section would get to be so important that even shelf-stable juices (Zola, POM Wonderful) would fight to get a piece of that real estate? It just goes to show you just how appealing that crushed ice layer can be, and how little consumers are interested in center-store items. It’s been enough to turn even Bolthouse Farms into an enhanced water company, just to try to grab a little bit more of the produce section. I can’t wait to have to go down the grains and pastas aisle to have to pick up a potato or an onion. …We have received word that Minute Maid Pulpy is the latest billion-dollar brand in the Coke lineup. As a juice brand the company launched in China five years ago and then expanded into other countries in the Far East, it begs this question: will it still be a billion-dollar brand if China allows the Renminbi to rise? ... We’re finally seeing a second wave of coconut waters – some are even dehydrated, which should make the folks at Amazon pretty happy. … While we keep hearing that companies should master a specific region as proof-of-concept before they grow, we also keep hearing about incubators and master brokers who think they can pull in national accounts for brands. But here’s one roadblock: while national accounts are terrific, they’re only the key in some regions, like California and the Southwest. The Northeast is different – up-and-down the street is still important there. And it’s a combined model in other regions, as well. What works in Chicago

4 BEVERAGESPECTRUM.JANUARY-FEBRUARY.2011

doesn’t work as well in the rest of Illinois, let alone Michigan or Wisconsin. You have to wonder what that means for PepsiCo as it goes from six regions to four. Even the Russians in Red Dawn were more decentralized than that. …So we’re in year nine or so of the functional beverage revolution (check out Gerry Khermouch’s column in this issue) and we’re still knocking around not just the best functionality to deliver, but the best package to use to deliver it. Still, when ranging from shots to drinks to super-sized multiple-serving bottles, the hardest brand battle doesn’t just seem to be what to put out there, but the problem of “what else have you got?” And that can create a mean set of roadblocks for a developing brand. Would Function, for example, have had an easier time early on if it had just taken Urban Detox national, as it has long been the brand’s best seller? For some products, the assortment might appear to be the key, but a single SKU is often the driver. Even vitaminwater, for example, had a clear leader in power-C, then focus, then XXX. Still, that full line sure does make for a nice shelf, if you can get it. Wonder what will happen with the shot arrays like Tonic or I AM? …Getting back to Minute Maid, who would have ever thought that Simply Orange could force changes in the way Tropicana goes to market? It just goes to show you that there is green space out there even in the tightest categories. Look at the inroads Xyience has made in energy drinks, the success of Xing and Sweet Leaf in cans, the growth of Neuro and Activate as strange-looking enhanced waters, even the ongoing inversion of the beer industry as all of the momentum shifts to craft. There’s always room for innovation, up and down the aisle.

I HAVE WORN MANY HATS IN MY now-19 years chronicling the beverage industry, but one of my favorites is when I get to help entrepreneurs in a handson way. I’ve been a sounding board and confidant to beverage marketers as they put their visions into practice. I have been a guinea pig for new products that haven’t seen the light of day. (Very often, it’s with good reason). I always try to be as objective as I can, with my palate being the arbiter. I’ve critiqued business plans, packaging concepts, graphic designs and the like. I truly enjoy the creative process that these star-struck beverage aspirants go through to achieve their dream. In my role, I discuss the latest trends and categories with retailers, distributors and beer wholesalers. I always enjoy my pithy conversations with the analysts who cover the beverage sector. We can wax poetic forever without ever having to put in our dime. A beverage life is truly fun. I love every aspect of my multi-dimensional role in the industry. Now, there is a newer role and dynamic, and I’m taking it seriously. No one’s hired me for it, but here goes: I’m now the unofficial pitchman to the financial sector at the behest of beverage marketers looking for capital. We’re all attuned to the realities of making a go of it. You need capital, in all different denominations. Marketers have to spend too much of their time trying to raise money to fund their operations. That is a reality of the business. Often, I am called upon to give an overview of the industry and a particular segment when a company wants an

investor to consider their brand. It is a part of my job I embrace. In my many conversations with the investment community, there is one constant: They love and admire the beverage industry. They like the bells and whistles, the prestige and the cool factor. They think it’s a sexy marketplace and are excited about becoming involved in it. With that being said, why are we not seeing more investment? There are so many terrific brands and concepts out there, ripe for seed money and beyond. Yet, there are so many marketers wanting. Now is the time for the financial companies to step up and put words into action. I know it is easy to give all the reasons not to invest, but there are so many more reasons for them to put their resources in. I know there are many places you can put your money, but beverages should be at the top of your list. There is so much creativity and innovation happening, and you should become a part of it. Open up your assets to the best industry on earth. It’ll be an investment well made.

BEVSCAPE BUSINESS • The latest news on the brands you sell.

More Four Loko Fallout

Hot Marketing Hires

As Four Loko and other formerly caffeinated malternatives head for the market with the FDA off their backs, chances are they’re going to have company from another group: the lawyers. That’s because the brand – and others like it – has been named as a factor in an increasing number of criminal complaints and lawsuits in the past year. Last summer, four Orlando men were killed in a car crash; according to the Orlando Sentinel, Sentinel they had been struck by a driver who had consumed Four Loko. Additionally, Florida's Department of Children and Families recently announced that it is looking into cases that involved Four Loko. A spokeswoman told the Sentinel that “about a dozen cases in recent months” involved the drink. While at least one lawyer has made it clear that his clients’ aim is to shut the company down, another caffeinated beer maker says she is about to have to close her doors as well. According to Rhonda Kallman, whose Moonshot ’69 caffeinated beer was also included in the notice from the FDA that forced the makers of Four Loko, among others, to remove caffeine from their products, the new regulations have taken all of the raison d’etre for her own drink. Kallman recently sent out notice that she has ceased production of Moonshot ’69 – a product that had the alcohol of a regular beer and about 69 mg of caffeine. She has also begun circulating an online “Save Moonshot” petition. “Moonshot, my all malt, craftbrewed pilsner, bears absolutely no resemblance to the products that brought about the FDA's demand to reformulate,” Kallman stated in an appeal. “I stand by my product's formula which includes a standard 5 percent alcohol by volume and 69 milligrams of caffeine (which equals about a half a cup of coffee). I also stand behind my marketing strategy and take pride in the responsibility of my loyal customers. The practice of enjoying alcohol and caffeine together is nothing new (Irish coffee, rum and Coke, Red Bull and Vodka, coffee stout...), but the abuse of the law by some brewers is a legitimate concern. It is imperative, therefore, to fi nd an acceptable level of caffeine that all beer producers can adhere to. “

The pace of new marketers – including several high-profile veterans – getting hired at evolving beverage companies seems to indicate an overall improved outlook for the coming year. No fewer than five key marketing spots have been established or filled at emerging brands in recent months, including Activate (Jesse Merrill), Honest Tea (Peter Kaye, who took the company’s lead marketing spot a few months after Merrill went to Activate) Bazi (Debbie Wildrick), FRS (Deepak Massand), Neuro (Desiree Sorenson), and Bai (Kat Haddon), among others. When times are tough brands often move away from marketing to try to focus on keeping retailers and distributors happy with supply chain – extras like ads and incentives can sometimes get swept under the rug. An expansion of marketing talent, conversely, indicates that companies are willing to ramp up their spending, putting the everneeded “feet on the street” to sample and back up marketing initiatives with support in a given area. “I truly believe that without marketing, a brand doesn’t have a chance of thriving,” said Wildrick, who has come on to head both the sales and marketing operations at Bazi. “We all know that about 2 percent of new beverages will make it – the only chance they’ve got to make it is with the right marketing driving consumers to retail. Without it, though, they don’t have a chance.” It also creates energy at companies.

10 BEVERAGESPECTRUM.JANUARY-FEBRUARY.2011

Debbie Wildrick, now with Bazi, speaking at BevNET Live Winter 2010 in Santa Monica, CA.

“I can’t let what we’ve got planned right now out of the box, but in about a month we’ll have something that will knock your socks off,” Activate CEO Dan Holland told Beverage Spectrum. If other companies are similarly poised, expect to pack several extra pairs.

BEVSCAPE INNOVATION • Product development & marketing news

Heineken Offers Touch-Me Cans Heineken launched their new can in February, adding a tactile level of printing to the can. The new design incorporates four distinct elements: Heineken’s iconic racetrack label is prominently featured on the front of the can while on the back, the contemporary vertical logo is the hero, and the new aluminum can offers a cool, more sophisticated appearance. The curve of the can gives the pack a more fl uid and dynamic look and the innovative raised ink printing technology adds a unique texture to the can, creating the visual impression of condensation on the outside while providing a more pleasing tactile experience to the consumer. The new can package will be available in 12 oz. and 16 oz. sizes beginning in February and the 24 oz. size in summer 2011. Additionally, a new 3X4 suitcase format replaces the 2X6 fridge pack and makes it easier to stack and display at retail. The support materials will feature a special printing technique that creates a complementary 3-D look and communicates the “Feel the New Can. Taste the Exceptional Quality” brand message.

Flavor Focus

Nutrition Nuggets

The Center for Culinary Development offered up its flavor trend information for the upcoming year. According to research chief Kara Nielsen, the focus will be on unique flavors (a big deal for beverage companies) and nourishing foods (not so much). The CCD uses a 5-stage “Trend Mapping” system, where Stage 1 trends are emerging from independent restaurants and Stage 5’s have landed in the mainstream. Among them, according to Nielsen:

There was lots of movement in the nutritional profile business last month: First Walmart said it would get on board with Michelle Obama to begin an effort to provide consumers with healthier and more affordable food choices, then the Food Marketing Institute and the Grocery Manufacturers’ Association launched “Nutrition Keys” — a labeling system to let consumers more easily see a few key indicators of how good a product might be for them. Not to be outdone, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services arrived with their own set of nutrition guidelines, as they do every five years. The key takeaway for consumers and beverage manufacturers? Drink fewer sugary drinks. Which, obviously, is not a stance that makers of soft drinks were pleased to hear – although was certainly one they were expecting. Stevia, anyone?

Douglas Fir and other “Wild by Nature” Flavors: Stage 1. Along with chefs who are looking to nature as a source for new plants, herbs, and other flavors, mixologists are expected to add “wild” flavors at the bar. Cloudberry: Stage 1. With Nordic cuisine on the rise, the alpine, arctic “Cloudberry” is moving from jams and liqueurs to beer, wine and sparkling drinks. Yuzu and Exotic Citrus: Stage 2. According to Nielsen, this “floral-flavored Japanese lime” is a trend that is “ready to blossom.”

SPORTS DRINKS 52 Weeks through 1/23/2011

Spotlight Category Contest #1 – Beverage Spectrum will send a mixed case of energy shots to the first reader who successfully re-orders the scrambled Gatorade hierarchy into usable sales numbers, particularly as some products get re-labeled, others go off the market, and some just plain take off. But even as the label change helps out Gatorade, there’s a much more easily codified change in the category – and that is that POWERADE has been growing like gangbusters, with sales up 50 percent over the previous year. Unit sales are up even higher than that, indicating discounting is definitely part of that movement, but it looks like Coke has nonetheless gotten some important share in the scramble.

ZOLA Spreads its Wings BY JEFFREY KLINEMAN

ACAI HAS BEEN PULPED, MASHED, juiced, powdered, extracted, clarified and just plain bottled in the decade since it became a mainstay of the natural foods channel. While it’s found some purchase in mainstream accounts – and as an ingredient in many trendy vodka drinks – it remains a product that has yet to break through. But Zola founder Chris Cuvelier believes he’s finally found a way to navigate the obstacles: the crunchier-than thou exclusivity of the natural channel, the weirdness of multi-level marketing, watereddown ideals of the mainstream. “For years, we’ve been the smaller player,” Cuvelier said, shortly before his latest trip to meet with suppliers in Brazil. “Everyone else has raised more money, while we’ve been the more regionallyfocused brand, but our plan is to bring on more retail merchandisers and distribution partners to help us win at shelf.” Cuvelier’s confidence rests on numbers showing that the brand tends to outsell its other miracle berry competitors at the grocery stores in which they compete, as well as a variety of plans that he has enacted to get his product out and his message to consumers. The company has also found major sales traction, increasing by 42 percent in 2009 and in the mid-30s in 2010. These numbers show Zola can compete, said Ken Walters, the Managing Director at Emigrant Bank who shepherded that investor’s position from a small minority stake to approximately $10 million – and majority ownership – in Zola. To increase the velocity and spread the word, however, the brand is expanding its portfolio, its footprint, and its strategy for reaching the market. Along with a new Caja with Mango Juice variety, Zola is changing its overall brand masthead to “Zola Brazilian Superfruits” and will continue to release products that involve ingredients like Acerola and Cupuacu, in addition to Caja. The company is also trying to move into new areas of the store, launching a co-branded product 18 BEVERAGESPECTRUM.JANUARY-FEBRUARY.2011

in the nutritional space via a licensing deal it struck with smoothie bar operator Jamba Juice on an RTD multi-serve daily superfruit shot product. Meanwhile, the brand is also showing a newfound willingness to embrace direct store distribution. After watching an experiment in DSD blossom in Colorado behind the strength of Denver-based New Age Beverage, Cuvelier and his backers decided they want to ride DSD into an expanded circulation profile rather than simply rely on the big natural brokers. While Cuvelier said UNFI will remain a key partner, he also made it clear that he’d prefer a chainor region-wide schematic over the whims of the produce buyer in an individual store. “We don’t want to be in every account with DSD, but if we can get all the grocery stores in an area, then I think it’s a better way of building the brand from what it was from warehouse direct,” he said. Working to Zola’s advantage is that the product is shelf-stable, offering the brand two places to tell the story in a given retailer – both off-shelf on display, but also in the fresh juice part of the produce section pioneered for exotic juices by companies like POM Wonderful and Odwalla. In that two-pronged strategy, Zola is on-trend, Cuvelier said, noting the presence of the skyrocketing coconut water products in both end-cap displays and grab-and-go coolers. But Zola is stretching into new product lines and marketing ideas, as well: with Brazilian culture on the rise, and interest in superfruits still present, Cuvelier is reaching deeper into the rainforest for even more exotic tropical fruits, launching a series of products whose health benefits and exoticism he hopes will sit at the intersection of the two trends. To further the process of identifying with Brazil and health simultaneously, the entire Zola brand is undergoing a labeling change and update that will put the individual fruits on the front of the bottle and identify those ingredients’ specific benefit

readily to the consumers. “We just want to make sure we’re sending the clear message of ‘here’s the fruit, here’s the Super Fruit, and here’s what each serving of Zola means to you,’” Cuvelier said. Another advantage to putting the fruit up front? It plays up the products’ taste, and that’s important because Zola tends to win taste tests against the competition, Cuvelier said. If the brand is going to take on the bigger companies in the acai arena – the better-known Sambazon and the streamlined Bossa Nova – it’s going to have to have a point of differentiation, and Cuvelier is gambling on flavor as that point. “I don’t think there are going to be, say, four acai brands in these produce sets, there are going to be one or two – and they’ll go for the ones that taste the best, that have the best packaging,” he said. “Our strategy now is to take the story and get that into more distribution, do the right promotions, and really execute and win at shelf.” Of course, storytelling, when it comes to the beverage business, often means sampling and sales reps. That sort of capital-intensive move to put feet on the street – particularly in support of DSD

folks – is where Zola’s financial position comes into play. In fact, while the Colorado experiment was what launched the company’s DSD push, it nevertheless turned down other potential DSD partners last year, waiting to see if the concept would be borne out. “We’re not trying to attack the whole country but are trying to attack it gradually as we grow it out,” said Walters. “We had opportunities to catch on with some really great partners – but we didn’t want to do it without a proven model and where we could get to profitability. We really wanted to get this thing to (cash-flow) positive and gradually build out the DSD over time.” Zola has always been a fairly lean operation, although as it seeks to expand it has added staff: a new office in Colorado is overseeing the DSD push and marketing efforts, while a new COO, Matt Collins (fresh from Metromint), is expected to help the brand’s new focus and operational discipline. And financial discipline is still the rule at Zola: according to Walters, it is approaching profitability – something that he sees as the key for it to be able to access lending capital without putting up equity in the company. Nevertheless, Cuvelier acknowledges some risks: in refocusing the brand on more than just acai, Zola is trying an approach similar to one tried by Bossa Nova a few years ago; the broadened portfolio did not move for that company, and eventually it was scooped up by new owner Sunny D. But times are different, Cuvelier says: while interest in Super Fruits remains a constant in the U.S., interest in Brazil is a growth industry, with coconut water’s popularity, the 2014 World Cup, and then the 2016 Olympics all serving to focus attention on the funloving country. And again, there’s that flavor-oriented point of difference. “We want to capture the spirit of Brazil – the exuberance of the people and the passion of the culture in these fruits,” Cuvelier said. “I think we’re more targeted, I think we taste better, and I think we can do a better job of executing. And, because we’re shelf-stable, we can go more places.” So maybe the time is right, after all, for one of the acai companies to break through. Or, if not, for one with newly spread wings to soar above.

With the release of several new products, Zola founder Chris Cuvelier and company are changing the overall brand masthead to “Zola Brazilian Superfruits.” This move follows the decision to include not only acai but other Brazilian fruits likes Acerola, Cupuacu, and Caja.

GERRY’S INSIGHTS

By Gerry Khermouch

FUNCTIONAL FATIGUE FUNCTIONAL BEVERAGES AS THE next frontier? Until recently there seemed little reason to question that premise. After all, if drinks like Fuze and vitaminwater could do so well by giving the impression of offering a functional lift, then imagine how high the potential might be for brands that actually delivered meaningful amounts of functional fortification. But so far, that bet hasn’t paid off. In the past couple of years, some visible early entrants have struggled. A deep recession arrived, the government began to crack down on beverage companies’ health claims, and consumers – well, I get the sense that they’re probably spending their Internet time on job listing boards and trolling for grocery coupons rather than heading over to the Web site of functional beverage brands to learn the definitions of “chondroitin” or “quercetin.” That, or they may be buying into the whole-food, anti-engineered “phood” precepts espoused by commentators like Michael Pollan. I also can’t help but wonder whether a more pervasive anger and cynicism, bred by revelations of the glaring shortcomings of bankers, stockbrokers, realtors, politicians and government regulators hasn’t injected a fundamental skepticism about sweeping promises from anybody, let alone an elixir in a bottle. I have no formal research to back up this hunch: no focus groups, no surveys, no Whole Foods shopper intercepts. It’s just a nagging feeling I’ve culled from conversations with friends and neighbors, beverage distributors and retailers. But also, look at what new beverage items do seem to be selling these days: many are in tried-and-true categories that may lack any cutting-edge mystique, but fulfill basic urges in terms of refreshment, hydration and the like. They include newer shelfstable versions of such iconic refrigerated brands as Sunny Delight and Nesquik. King Juice’s Calypso brand of lemonade is also soaring – considering that

20 BEVERAGESPECTRUM.JANUARY-FEBRUARY.2011

the populace is supposed to be spooked at ingesting lots of calories through its drinks, I’m somewhat amazed -- but it tastes great, the glass bottle feels great in your hand, the range of flavors can make you forget it’s all just lemonade and you certainly don’t have to go to a Web site to understand it. Teas, like AriZona Iced Tea and its various spinoffs, and the canned Xingtea line also seem to be striking a chord: tea, while overcrowded, is an understandable drink with perhaps some modest health benefits and an accessible taste that makes it a good transition from the carbonated soft drinks some consumers feel they should be abandoning. Many of these are relatively inexpensive brands, but I think the phenomenon goes beyond trading down. After all, some categories of beverages with high price points but clear value in their ingredients and packaging continue to hold their own, from energy drinks to some of the superfruit juice categories. So it can’t all be a question of price. Knowing the above, am I totally down on functional drinks? Not at all, but it may take a while for them to reach their promise. The company that hoped to serve as poster child for the segment, Function Drinks, has regrouped after a wildly ambitious initial plan misfired and is trying to grind it out on the way to some kind of broader acceptance. Newer lines like the cap-activated Activate and the curvy-bottle Neuro continue to attract distributor and retailer attention. FRS is striving to move beyond being an Internet play, and establish a fuller consumer understanding of just what the brand is, as well as its active ingredient quercetin. Celsius has outlasted the misconceived Enviga line from a Coke-Nestle partnership and continues to push toward mainstream acceptance (albeit after a shift in emphasis to fitness assistance rather than calorie burning). So is the flourishing of functional beverages right on the horizon? I’m inclined

to believe that if you’re a wholesaler or retailer, you should be experimenting with some functional entries, but don’t overcommit. Given the degree of consumer skepticism out there, it’s probably best to emphasize segments that allow consumers to judge for themselves in a reasonable timeframe whether they work – energy, joint health, maybe mental focus, but not necessarily anti-aging. I’m not convinced relaxation is for real as a category; maybe something more narrowly defined, like sleep aid, will work better. I’d go easy on brands that seem to overreach in their claims. You probably should also be cautious about picking up too many brands that need to have a supplement rather than nutrition panel affixed to the label; government regulators are looking at those with a gimlet eye. And – in a lesson that it took a while for Function, among others, to learn – don’t assume consumers will be willing to sacrifice flavor for the promise of a functional benefit. I’ve focused here on smaller, independent players, because that’s where most breakthrough brands tend to get launched. That’s not to dismiss the beverage giants (and their pharma brethren) who maintain extensive research capabilities and are seeking genuine functional and nutritional breakthroughs. They’ve always had extensive R&D but have misfired repeatedly nevertheless: both with consumers and, as the Enviga snafu or Danone’s headaches on the probiotic side would attest, with even the mundane regulatory stuff you’d expect them not to fumble. Still, this is one category where they should have every advantage. Maybe they’ll be the ones to show the way. We’ll see what they come up with next. THERE ARE A LOT OF FOLKS CLAIMING TO HAVE THE PERFECT HANGOVER CURE.

THE SEARCH FOR THE SOLUTION TO THE NIGHT BEFORE WHAT’S THE

HOLY GRAIL OF THE HANGOVER CATEGORY? SOMETHING THAT WORKS. BY JEFFREY KLINEMAN

22 BEVERAGESPECTRUM.JANUARY-FEBRUARY.2011

Sadly, there hasn’t been one that drinking can’t beat. Nevertheless, hangover relief remains one of the industry’s fastest-emerging subsets, a category where shots, slim cans, energy drinks and cocktail mixers are all fighting to create a dominant style. Problem is, it’s a functionality that can only truly be proven after a hard night out and a concentrated effort to remember to apply the medicine at the proper time. For a long time, that has been the purview of products like sports drinks, and more recently, coconut water. In fact, as the hangover supplement business broadens, mainline remedies continue to make some of the best headway in the category. Take Rockstar Recovery, for example, which became such a sleeper hit in the energy drink category that it walked off with BevNET’s Best Energy Drink of 2010 award. Straddling both zones didn’t leave it behind; in fact, with distributors, having the functionality tied to a strong brand name like Rockstar created less of a consumer education issue. Since its debut last year, Recovery has added two new flavors. Another energy/recovery hybrid, IronClad, made by Shadow Beverages, has also moved past its initial single-chain exclusivity into wider distribution. Still, there are other, purer plays than energy; some products are relying on good old fashioned promotion to build an audience. Two companies that have taken that approach to boost their brand image are Code Blue and Function Drinks. Code Blue has a strong sampling and celebrity focus, which includes highprofile investors and the fluid networking abilities of its founders, Jeffrey and Steve Frumin, who seem to know everyone who has ever walked on a red carpet. Function, meanwhile, has long based much of its potential on its first SKU, Urban Detox. Last summer, it garnered extra press for a seasonal, 100 day-long party gauntlet called “Function: Party Crasher.” While both of those products have gotten extra press in recent years, their growth has in some ways shown some of the category’s peripatetic nature: Code Blue, for example, started out with a very strong hangover-related focus, but has edged closer to marketing itself as a product intended to help consumers recover from workouts, rather than from parties. Ubran Detox has also had it’s non-hangover functionality emphasized in the past. It’s a change that seems to be necessitated by the size of the market and the use occasions: having a hangover supplement is only going to help post-hangover – presumably a less frequent occurrence than a workout. And with many of the elements the same, particularly the electrolyte focus, those categories, like energy and recovery, seem to have an overlap. So where does that leave the true hangover drink? In quite a few instances, it leaves it in shot bottles at the front of the store, fighting it out for counter real estate alongside energy shots and relaxation drinks. If the favored method of accessing functional liquids becomes the shot, then these products will be well positioned. That’s the bet being made by brands like Cheerz, Last Round, and NoHo, all of which are in a shot that may be consumed either before or after the night in question. Still, even with those options and the others listed in this roundup in place, the industry is without a doubt searching for that true “hangover killer app” that will allow a night of fun boozing to remain a less-than-painful memory the morning after. That remains the functional problem for a much-desired functionality. And likely the key to the kingdom for a category that nevertheless continues to grow, as drinkers pursue their own consequence-free holy grail. •

BACK TO SCHOOL FOR SPARKLING JUICE BY JEFFREY KLINEMAN

ant to find out where all the growth in the sparkling juice category is? The answer is you’ve got to go back to school, where many of the most creative entries into the category are trying to find their feet and work the long-dreamed-of connection between the school vending operation, the local convenience and grocery chain, and a growing DSD operation. As an example, the numbers at right show very few of the brands actually included in our Brand News section. Why? They’re not selling so little as to be not included in the IRI numbers. They’re just thriving in channels largely unchecked by the usual agencies. GuS, for example, has been a mainstay in the natural, gourmet, and on-premise channels for several years. The Switch has maintained steady growth in schools in New England and New York. Fizzy Lizzy has been both a recognized media phenomenon and a BevNET award winner. All three products are more likely to make a dent on a convenience store shelf than, say, Kedem. Nevertheless, there is some crossover – Izze, Knudsen, Lorina and Orangina are all brands that have shown some mainstream growth out of their core natural and gourmet channels. And Reed’s has begun making private label versions of its recently-acquired Sonoma Sparklers on a contract basis for retailers, yet another way of increasing overall interest in these kinds of products. Even Ocean Spray has just jumped into the pool. Meanwhile, there is also a bit of a rising tide behind this category: gourmet CSDs showed movement and innovation last year, and that interest in bubbles may continue to help entrants in this more natural group. With Vignette providing an innovative, natural functionality and Sparkling Ice providing a juice/nutrient blend, there’s some range beyond gourmet and on-premise in the category, but again, for a true national brand to emerge, it’s going to have to be an academic superstar. •

Every 12 oz. bottle has 50 calories and only 11 grams of sugar – all from fruit juice. As with IZZE Sparkling Juice, IZZE esque is all-natural and contains no refined sugars, caffeine, preservatives, artificial colors or flavors. It comes in three varieties, Sparkling Black Raspberry, Sparkling Limon and Sparkling Mandarin. JANUARY-FEBRUARY.2011.BEVERAGESPECTRUM 27

ers with popular culture touches that reference hip-hop; Lean, for example, has even tried to get its new releases in synchronicity with current hot releases (New product? Yella. Hit song? Black & Yellow). Regardless of the song association, by now, the notion that these products are tapping into the vibe of the drug-influenced “chopped and screwed” scene in Texas is well-known; the products retain something of a recreational aura. The “Down but not Out” subcategory

Solutions for Sleepyheads:

the Relaxation Family Tree By Jeffrey Klineman

Over 70 million Americans can’t sleep, says Adam Platzner, and that sounds like a business opportunity to the head of sales and marketing for Dreamwater, a relaxation drink line that has gradually acquired distribution in several large retail locations, including Wal-Mart and Duane Reade. Of course, he’s not the only one with that idea. In the past three years, there have been hundreds of drinks that incorporate sleep aid, relaxation, or other kinds of mental de-stressing into their functional formula. It’s a growth industry that business research group IBIS World indicated has reached about $500 million worldwide. That number might sound like it’s a category on the cusp, but the flip side is that the international market is much stronger – GABA products, one sub-sector of the relaxation beverage industry, have been an established category in Japan for years. Meanwhile, GABA came to the U.S. a few years ago as part of an exclusive deal with Jones Soda and proceeded to flop. U.S. consumers didn’t quite figure GABA out – and for the most part, the

28 BEVERAGESPECTRUM.JANUARY-FEBRUARY.2011

relaxation category hasn’t quite figured U.S. consumers out, either. Therefore, as an aid to retailers and distributors, we now present the family tree of the relaxation category: The “70 Million Insomniacs” subcategory These sleep aids are designed to produce few other effects beyond a solution to the problem that Platzner described. Typically a 2 oz. to 4 oz. shot, although a few companies (Dreamwater included) also have full-sized drinks, they use melatonin and other elements to quickly bring on sleep. For many of these products, the direct functionality has led to them being sold largely through nutritional supplement distributors, although some, like RelaxZen, are attempting beverage DSD. So is Neuro Sleep, which is a full bottle that contains melatonin, unlike its linemate, Neuro Bliss. The “Chopped and Screwed” subcategory Several of the earliest relaxation drink brands, like LEAN, Purple Stuff, and Drank have tried to beguile consum-

Dwelling outside the melatonin sphere, these products don’t work as knockout drops but are marketed on the basis of herbal and chemical remedies that can bring on relaxation, reduce stress, and even improve mental performance without caffeine. These drinks, which include Vacation in a Bottle (ViB), Just Chill, Neuro Bliss, and even RelaxZen “Sport,” range in packaging sized from a shot to a full-size soft drink. These are the ones the media is thinking of when it starts talking about “anti-energy” drinks. There are outliers, of course, and recombinations. Beauty Sleep, for example, combines sleep induction with antioxidants. And AriZona’s Relax FastShot also comes paired with an Awake FastShot. There are also issues: chief among them is the problem of classification. With melatonin used widely in these products, the FDA has begun taking a hard look, and recently required Drank to reclassify itself as a dietary supplement; with the wrong person passing out behind the wheel, stock could get recalled very quickly. That’s something that Platzner is already trying to avoid. “We’ve deliberately positioned our product on the over-the-counter analgesic aisle as a sleep enhancer,” he said. “We’re not telling you to go out and use it at a nightclub or at lunch.” One other potential land mine? The emergence of soft drinks based on THC, an active component in marijuana. While those products are only for sale semi-legally in state-licensed marijuana dispensaries, one bad incident – especially with some relaxation products, like Mary Jane’s Relaxing Soda, which claims to imitate marijuana’s effects, although it doesn’t contain any -- could throw a cloak of negative publicity over the whole category. And that wouldn’t be relaxing at all. •

TENNESSEAN WINS CHEERWINE’S ‘LEISURE BUS’ SWEEPSTAKES

BAZI Adds Endorsements

BAZI International, Inc. has signed endorsement contracts that include 2010 professional women’s basketball rookie of the year, Tina Charles and women’s surf prodigy, Anastasia Ashley. Tina’s decision to partner with BAZI was influenced by the Company’s affiliation with Heart for Africa. Originally from Queens, New York, Tina was a first draft pick for a women’s professional basketball league in the 2010 and won a Gold Medal with team USA and the World Championships. Anastasia Ashley is the world’s most progressive female surfer in the modern day surfing world, recently becoming the 2010 Pipeline Women’s Pro Champion. A talented prodigy, she went on to win 2 NSSA national titles and rack up an impressive

resume of accolades including being named the “rookie of the year” for the Triple Crown of Surfing and winning the Corona Pro Surf Series. Over the past years, she has garnered much attention for her surfing, but also for her vivacious personality and looks, being featured in many magazines including FHM and Maxim, and TV shows including shows on the MTV network, and Last call with Carson Daly. “We are very excited to have partnered with two extraordinary and talented athletes,” stated Kevin Sherman, CEO of BAZI. “These women are leaders in their sports, society and are passionate about giving back to their communities which makes them a perfect fit with BAZI.”

58 BEVERAGESPECTRUM.JANUARY-FEBRUARY.2011

After traveling to more than 100 retailers and events across the South as part of the “Long Live Leisure Tour,” Cheerwine’s tricked-out VW bus now belongs to Chris Rizzie, one of 400,000 people who entered to win the refurbished “ride.” The tour kicked off in May 2010 with Cheerwine engaging consumers directly at the various stops, allowing them to check out the refurbished “Leisure Bus” in person and enter the sweepstakes. Cheerwine fans also entered by visiting the soft drink’s Facebook page until the contest closed in October. The winner was selected via random drawing. Rizzie, a resident of White House, Tenn., which is located in metro Nashville, discovered Cheerwine while vacationing in North Carolina this past summer. After falling in love with the 94-year-old soft drink, Rizzie became a fan online and entered the contest multiple times on Facebook. The “Leisure Bus” comes equipped with everything the winner will need to enjoy his leisure time, including a fridge stocked full of the soft drink, a flat-screen TV, an Xbox, a surfboard and more. The bus’ exterior features a custom paint job and upholstered interior. Still a family-owned company, Cheerwine didn’t hire a third-party street team company to manage its “Long Live Leisure Tour.” Instead, the college-age kids of Cheerwine employees drove the vehicle and sampled at the various stops.
