THE FIRST DROP

A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD
IT’S BEEN A LONG YEAR, AND one that I think we’re all delighted to see get chucked into the recycling bin like so many re-launched Tropicana bottles. From an innovation point of view it was truly exciting: BevNET’s Best of 2009 winner Monster Energy showed off a trio of hot new energy drinks, while consumers began to accept early stage growth of new functional products like relaxation drinks and alternative sports and nutrition products. New non-carbonated products from Adina, Sambazon, and Guayaki showed a willingness to meet consumers halfway, with lower calorie profiles and familiar packaging, while some smaller CSD companies fully embraced Stevia as a way to try to keep their category relevant. But from a business point of view, things were tougher. The kind of breakout brands we saw in 2009 didn’t have
4.BEVERAGESPECTRUM.NOVEMBER–DECEMBER.09
the kind of critical mass we saw in 2008; some previously strong products like Gatorade and vitaminwater, as well as powerful categories like bottled water and juices, continued their sharp decline. At the consumer level and at the financing level, there wasn’t a lot of good news to report. Which is why I was so overwhelmed by the recent show of community at BevNET Live in Santa Monica – it made for an exciting, encouraging way to end 2009, in that it allowed new companies brimming with the entrepreneurial energy that keeps the industry fresh to harness the experience and wisdom of those who have been able to turn their ideas into functioning businesses. What struck me there wasn’t so much the opportunity to get people from the industry up on stage – although I’ll talk
about that in a minute – but the spirit of sharing that was in place. During our “Beverage Breaks” and lunches, folks with small startups weren’t afraid to approach veterans like Greg Steltenpohl or Debbie Wildrick for advice and guidance. Investment bankers sat with companies whose business plans they’d normally ignore to offer them their connections and insight. Old friends compared marketing strategies and supplier names. Fellow travelers from the worlds of socially and environmentally conscious brands traded stories and tips. As it had in May, when we held our first event in Manhattan, the field seemed level for the new and the experienced alike. I know that it might sound like I’m just heaping praise on our own party, but that’s not my intent. Actually, what I’m trying to do is praise its participants. Several of our speakers were brave souls who had never taken part in any kind of beverage conference before but decided they were ready to “give back;” others, veterans of the sales side of the business, were willing to drop the marketing artifice for a while to talk about the ways they had solved problems that can face so many companies as they try to grow and succeed. That kind of support made the business seem a little less like an arena and a little more like a village. I know we write about the realities of marketplace competition and the decisions they make that enable some companies to succeed while others fail. We’ll keep on doing that, not pulling any punches. But it sure was nice that everyone was able to let their guard down for a while, to recognize how tough things can be, and applaud and encourage everyone who takes on the fight. And for sticking it out for the past couple of years yourselves, I hope you can hear me clapping now. We’ll see you in 2010.
PUBLISHER’S TOAST

BELLY UP TO THE BAR WHAT SETS BEVERAGES APART from other industries? It’s the sheer variety, innovation, and marketing prowess that go into the products. Recently, I decided I wanted to see what happened when all that creativity went into me. So I started drinking… everything. See, at BevNET Live, we offered a Sample Bar for attendees. More than 60 brands submitted products! My mission: try as many as I could over the course of the day. Suffice it to say, it made for one pretty wild ride. (Editor’s Note: In truth, we’re not really sure that what follows actually happened. We believe Barry’s column is a metaphor for the diverse variety of innovative products available for trial at BevNET Live, and, by extension, within the entire industry. But as regular readers of this space know, Barry did attend Woodstock. So anything is possible.) Just like many consumers, I started my day with orange juice. But this wasn’t your garden variety stuff, it was Italian Blood Orange Juice. Then, I hit the cooler again to chase the citrus with two Aloe Vera juices. My day was now under way, but I needed some protein: Oh Yeah! and Muscle Milk gave me my daily requirement, and more. I was ready to greet some old friends, and to hear the panelists. And on they came. Parched from talking, I delved into the Coconut Water trio that was collectively chosen as our Product of the year: Vita Coco, Zico, and O.N.E. I was again fully hydrated and ready to go! Next, I started trying some of our more exotic products. Adina Holistics, WheyUP, Pre Probiotics and Venga Infusions were just a few of the brands we offered. After drinking them, I felt healthy, hearty, spiritual, even ticklish. Whey protein and probiotics are an odd combo. Throughout the course of the day, water and its derivatives cleansed my palate. I tried the gamut of flavors and functions: Hint, Nika, Rockin’ Water, Skinny, Activate, Cardio Water, Icio and OOBA, and 6.BEVERAGESPECTRUM.NOVEMBER–DECEMBER.09
chased it all with some Designer Whey Protein Water. The variations were staggering. After consuming all those waters, I was staggering, too. So I turned to the energy category to get my motor running. Along with Monster, Red Bull and 5-Hour Energy, we had Va, Tomic, BAWLS, Spider, Molotov and several others. As I slurped on an organic Steaz energy, I began to imagine that I had entered a far-off land where a 60-something man can play centerfield for the Yankees while dancing with an umbrella. It was at this point that several of my dearest friends decided to give me some calming iced tea. I drank a New Leaf, some more Steaz, a ZT Red Tea, some T2U, and many others. I was refreshed, but still frantic – something I realized after I went up to my room, challenged my Loofa to a fight, and lost. I charged back into the cooler, searching for new functional claims to help me change my life. And I found them, happily chugging down Noah’s AntiAging Beauty and GTOX, the Hangover Blocker. With those two products looking out for me, I knew I was bound to be safe and ready for the next speakers. Unfortunately, it appears I missed them. At around 3 a.m., I looked up from my pile of empty bottles. Everyone had left the lobby and headed home. I was up, I was down, I was happy, I was sad, I needed something to take the edge off. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw sweet relief: someone had left the entirety of the relaxation drink category for me to sample. I quickly threw down a Drank, a RelaxZen, and a Dr. Zen’s Liquid Calm. Well, I wouldn’t say I was fine. I would say you should never try this at home. Especially since I have no idea how I got home myself. But as someone who chronicles the industry, it’s my job to do it so that you don’t have to. As a result, I’ve seen the future of beverages. It was great fun. Innovation abounds. Enjoy it. Just not all at once. And have a happy holiday season!

BEVSCAPE BUSINESS • The latest news on the brands you sell.
Cooperation at the top Representatives of more than 20 consumer package firms, including the beverage industry’s two largest players, recently met at the Coca-Cola Co.’s global headquarters in Atlanta to share ideas and direct international business software firm SAP on what kind of software to create next. What rivals like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo get by pooling their knowledge, participants said, is mutual benefit. By recognizing mutual needs they can direct SAP to craft software that smoothes their operations. SAP sells its software, and Coke and Pepsi get to streamline their systems. Everybody wins, and, instead of competing over who has the better technology, they get to compete over who implements it better. Tom Miller, Coke’s vice president of bottling investments, said the Coca-Cola Co. has used SAP software on the distributor level for years. In overseas markets, he said, Coke is currently rolling out a new version of the software that allows distributors to “promise” product. The software eliminates disconnects between what a retailer expects to get and what actually arrives in his store, Miller said. Salesmen can remotely check what product will be available. If the supply doesn’t meet the stores intended order, the salesman can work out a substitution. While applications like that are the group’s primary reason for meeting, Bill Wohl, SAP’s vice president of field communications, said their meetings have grown beyond that. In the past few years, participants have identified mutual partners, then drawn those partners in. They’ve also identified occasions where their combined clout with particular suppliers could help them save money. The group’s discussions have become increasingly open, Wohl said, covering just about everything but price – a subject banned because it would cross the legal line into monopolistic collusion.

Follow up: vitaminwater...now batting zero The Coca-Cola Co. Inc. will soon update its $4.1 billion dollar vitaminwater acquisition. At the top of Coke’s agenda: scrapping vitaminwater10. Coke will replace the 10-calorie per serving (25-calorie perbottle) diet line and replace it with vitaminwater zero. The new diet variety will boast zero calories and branding that falls in line with Coke’s other “zero” products. This follows what had been a robust rollout of “10,” which quickly achieved more than $78 million in annual sales despite the slowing growth of vitaminwater. As reported in October, Coke had taken great effort to position vitaminwater10 as an independent brand in the fashion of Diet Coke. The line’s advertisements avoided all mention of the parent product, and Coke and its distributors put extra muscle behind the line by diverting vitaminwater point-of-sale space. One retailer reported that his local distributor ceased giving him vitaminwater window clings in favor of clings featuring vitaminwater10 flavors. Full-calorie vitaminwater will also see a redesign. Coke announced that it will switch the brand’s old labels for shiny metalics. The entire brand will also receive new nutritional labeling intended to make each variety’s functional ingredients easier to understand. MORE CHANGES AT COKE The Coca-Cola Co. Inc. recently announced its goal to double system revenues by 2020 through core changes to better align the company’s local markets and global operations to support each other. John Farrell, vice president of strategic planning, said the company will continue to broaden its global beverage portfolio while allowing bottlers to decide what products work in their markets. Others – including Bill Elmore, president of Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated – outlined how Coke plans to incubate packaging and products ideas in individual markets before scaling them nationally or globally. In his case, Coke Consolidated switched 20 oz. bottles in the Southeast for 16 and 24 oz. bottles, increasing sales and paving the way for other bottlers to implement variations on the new immediate consumption plan.
BEVSCAPE INNOVATION • Product development & marketing news
Trends for 2010 For marketers and their consumers (read: everyone) the next year will be characterized by a new feeling of urgency toward sustainability, in every possible meaning of the word, according to global trend firm Trendwatching. Calling the top trend of 2010 “business as unusual,” the group said “Companies will have to do more than just embrace the notion of being a good corporate citizen. To truly prosper, they will have to ‘move with the culture.” That culture, the group said, is shifting toward urban environments for innovation (and experiencing a corresponding spike in urban pride) wants easy charitable and “green” choices, and has a fluctuating sense of what constitutes luxury. Those consumers will increasingly be addressable through the internet, the group said, which will enable real-time reviews, in-person gatherings and automated alerts. It will also pose challenges and opportunities based on social networking profiles. In a last note, Trendwatching said brands will profit from edgier advertising. The group highlighted marketing efforts from Air New Zealand and Chupa Chups, who rolled out advertisements featuring nude employees and a line of candy designed to resemble sex toys, respectively. “2010 will be rawer, more opinionated, more risqué, more in your face than ever before,” the firm said.
No Average American Beverage marketers, already familiar with niche-targeted products, can no longer rely on their brand resonating with the “average American.” According to “2010 America,” a white paper commissioned by Advertising Age, that description no longer has meaning. The report concluded that that the American public has fragmented into small groups that have become “quite isolated,” according to Peter Francese, a demographer at advertising agency Ogilivy & Mather, who helped write the report. That isolation has been enabled by the internet, Francese told radio news show Marketplace. The result is the loss of an American mass market. Now, the U.S. is a collection of smaller markets. “Most times they want to see images that are directed right at them, and they want products crafted for them.”

Marketing to Millennials

Generation X has moved out of the spotlight. According to Information Resources Inc., Millenials – those Americans born between 1979 and 1989 (and mercifully no-longer called Generation Y) – will soon be shaping the consumer packaged goods marketplace. The new group brings $54.3 billion in new sales opportunities, but it also brings new rules. Millennial households shop less often, spend more per trip, and do a greater share of their spending at Wal-Mart and other supercenters, IRI said. Due to the economy, they’ve reduced spending on indulgence and convenience foods, and 70 percent agree that store brands are typically of excellent quality even though they purchase private label products at a similar rate to older shoppers. According to IRI, that acceptance of store brands illustrates that brands’ traditional marketing efforts have failed to reach Millennials. Compared with other segments, Millennial women also spend less time and effort planning their shopping trips and make less use of ad circulars and coupons. IRI also found that only a small number have a set grocery budget. IRI also found that Millennial women report a stronger need for retailers to support their healthier diets and lifestyles. Weightrelated issues dominate their concerns, IRI reported, with nearly half thinking they may have an unhealthy weight.

Bad PR or consumer imperative? That’s what we’ll find out soon enough as government regulators attack beverages that combine caffeine and alcohol. With the fight beginning this November, it’s hard to tell if up-and-coming brands like Joose and Four are ahead of the curve by sticking to their amped-up guns, or behind it. Meanwhile, it’s tough to figure out if Sparks and Tilt are tilting towards irrelevancy because they took out their caffeine, or because they had the caffeine in the first place. Chances are, the summer will provide more answers.

SLIMMING CHANCE How drinks that rev your metabolism can accelerate the bottom line. By Matt Casey
18.BEVERAGESPECTRUM.NOVEMBER–DECEMBER.09
LET’S FACE IT:
as a country, we could stand to lose a few billion pounds. America is fatter now than ever before, and getting fatter by the year. Simply cutting calories by switching to Diet Coke isn’t working, but, while more exercise and fewer donuts would do most of us a lot of good, a crop of up-andcoming beverage brands say they’ll help customers in their personal battles against fat. None of these brands can claim bulletproof science, but they’re earning serious looks. Most come with two advantages: a high register ring and the fix-it-quick appeal that comes when our collective pants are getting tight enough that it’s time for a larger pair. Again. In a perfect world, said Case Western Reserve University nutrition professor Hope Barkoukis, Americans would address their expanding waists by eating more fruits, vegetables and low-calorie foods. But Barkoukis understands that the world isn’t perfect. “In the real world, you don’t see many people out there trying to push broccoli,” she said. In place of that, she said, beverage-based dietary shortcuts represent a good start. The new wave of weight management beverages serve as between-meal treats or meal accompaniments and pack a collection of additives and nutraceuticals that require a science degree to fully understand. Broadly, though, they break down into two categories: products that curb the consumer’s appetite and those that help them burn more calories. BURN IT OFF Calorie burners offer a little nudge for consumers who just can’t muster the time and energy for another 10 minutes on the stair climber. These products, generally built around a core of caffeine and tea extract EGCG or other active ingredients, are supposed to raise their consumer’s metabolism (they certainly raise heart rates) and help burn more calories. Celsius crams 200 mg into a 12 oz. can, and Red-
line jams 250mg into an 8 ounce serving. But, while it’s a common ingredient, the category doesn’t always require high doses of caffeine. Function’s Light Weight slips in with a comparatively miniscule dose: just 30 mg to complement its mixture of EGCG, gymnema and resveratrol. Company founder Alex Hughes didn’t start his company with weight management in mind, though. Function began with other platforms, like Alternative Energy and Urban Detox. Hughes later pushed his company into the weight loss category, he said, because more than 30 percent of Americans are obese, and most of those that aren’t still worry about their weight. The line proved to be one of his company’s most successful. It peaked at four flavors, and remained on the roster after a recent reboot that took the brand down from eight platforms to just three. COOL IT DOWN Long the realm of diet pills with a penchant for attracting regulatory ire, beverage brands have stepped forward to benignly fill the appetite-control market. Their mechanisms differ, but each product tricks the body into feeling “full” when it wouldn’t normally. Funktional Beverages and Santa Monica-based Neuro both built drinks around LuraLean, a proprietary fiber that expands to 200 times its original volume when it meets stomach acid. The stomach, in turn, feels full and tells the brain it’s had enough. LuraLean’s manufacturer, AHD International, also claims that it slows food as it moves through the gastrointestinal tract, which can also reduce hunger. Other products try to skip filling the stomach and go directly to the brain. Forze, from PacificHealth Laboratories, combines a proprietary blend of fats, proteins and carbohydrates to make the 45 calorie drink feel like 400 calories or more. The company claims that the product activates satiety chemicals in the body, extends the feeling of fullness for 3.5 hours and decreases daily food intake by up to 20 percent. According to Pacifi-
cHealth Labs’ President and CEO, Jason Ash, it replicates the feeling of consuming a handful of almonds and a glass of milk. FUZE’s Slenderize line uses a different trick. Its core ingredient, Super CitriMax prevents the body from converting carbohydrates to fat, according to its marketer, InterHealth Nutraceuticals. Instead, it encourages the body to store that energy as glycogen. The molecule stores energy in an easy-to-access form and also tells the brain that the stomach is full. Despite garnering some bad press and embarrassing headlines, the weight management category has attracted a growing roster of established players. NVE added shot version of its Stacker 2 diet pills, and CytoSport recently introduced its Muscle Milk Refuel shot, which packs 100 mg of caffeine and 5 grams of protein. MARKETING As the category develops, marketers have taken different approaches with their brands. Celsius has targeted convenience and grocery stores to aim squarely at the mainstream market. The brand has even employed television commercials, a rare move for an independent beverage firm

Hughes said, it may not be that important. Hughes said consumers are “looking for that control edge that empowers them to participate in healthy programs.” People in and around his company have achieved meaningful weight loss results by incorporating Light Weight into a fitness regimen, and it’s anecdotes like that which are often the key to sales. In short, even if the science comes back saying that Light Weight (or any other weight-control drink, for that matter) amounts to little more than a placebo, it still helps the consumer make other positive lifestyle decisions. While Hughes has a professional interest in promoting that view, he’s not alone. Barkoukis, at Case Western, said there’s evidence to support that view. There’s a belief in nutrition, she said, that suggests that If you make one good decision, it will lead to others. Overall, she said, the science behind weight management drinks – be they appetite suppressants or calorie burners – is murky. The studies she’s reviewed support fiber-based belly-fillers more than braintargeted hunger reducers and calorie-burners have less support, but the conclusions are far from final. Despite that, she takes the stand that companies like Function and Celsius are making a positive contribution to American nutrition. In addition to the placebo effect, she said, research into these fields may eventually yield something that truly works. And that, she said, would seriously help America’s waistline problem. •

CATEGORY REPORT: GOURMET CSDs
HIGH-END OPTIMISM Gourmet CSD’s show staying power. By Matt Casey WITH CONSUMERS HOLDING TIGHT TO THEIR wallets, cafes closing, big soda brands losing volume and the perennial challenges of running a small business, it might seem like a terrible time to sell high-end glass-bottled soda. But the environment for boutique soda brands is better than it looks. Danny Ginsburg, the self-proclaimed “Soda Sommelier” at Real Soda In Real Bottles, Ltd., a distributor in Gardena, Calif., said the category’s current ills are minor and will be short-lived. His business is down, he said, but not significantly. Home deliveries have suffered the most, and deliveries to cafes have also slipped, he said, but they’ve done so at a rate similar to the drop in café foot traffic. In his view, that means that once customers have entered such dens of indulgence, they’re not going to try to save pennies or calories by avoiding products like his glass-bottled sugar bombs. “The ‘decline’ isn’t really indicative of a decline in interest in boutique sodas in those places,” Ginsburg said. And while the market may currently be sluggish, individual companies insist they have been doing well. Tami Kennedy Director of Communications for Maine-based Capt’n Eli’s Soda said her company has grown, adding new territory in California and Florida where many part-time New Englanders spend the winter months. Additionally, a god number of new products have been appearing: SOL Elixirs rolled out a three-SKU line, Zevia relaunched its entire line of stevia-sweetened sodas and Steaz reintroduced its diet sparkling green tea sodas. Kennedy said the biggest problem facing her company is finding the manpower to get the product where it needs to be. Most of the company’s distributors specialize in something other than boutique sodas, she said. So, the brand needs personnel in the market to help out
24.BEVERAGESPECTRUM.NOVEMBER–DECEMBER.09
Greg Warwick, president of the U.S. division of Fentiman’s North America, said getting money has presented his company’s largest challenge. Developing sales channels and back office support, he said, can tax small companies more than they might expect. “I would strongly counsel startups to make sure they’ve got their funding buttoned up and have contingency plans in place if sales fall short of forecast or unforeseen expenses materialize,” Warwick said. Once a small soda company has established those channels, he said, they have to struggle with the prices their distributors are willing to pay. Brands need to resist the temptation to “degrade” their brand “through excessive, deep price promotions,” he said. Unfortunately, a lot of distributors expect prices lower than smaller companies can sustain, said Maine Root president Mark Seiler. “Some beverage companies have sort of trained buyers to expect a large introductory discount and promotional offering,” Seiler said. “Buyers will take sub-par brands if the offer is right. If you have a great brand and believe in what you are making and doing, then hold your price and don’t give it away. “ One notable boutique soda marketer has almost wholly walked away from DSD altogether. Chris Reed has shifted his focus to stocking his products in grocery stores and big-box outlets through chains’ warehouse systems. He has succeeded by placing Reed’s Ginger Brew and Virgil’s Root Beer in natural products sections appearing in grocery, and now wants to get those products into the same aisle as Coke and Pepsi. Like Reed, Seiler said he and his brother believe strongly in their brand, and their distribution partners have been willing to take a risk on them. Still, he said, the business is “tougher than it looks.” “I didn’t think I’d ever say that,” he added. •

BEST OF 2009
BEVNET’S BEST OF 2009 AWARD WINNERS
ONE AWARD WINNER has leveraged innovation to solidify a company’s place in the bedrock of the beverage business. Another award winner actually comprises three companies that are the vanguard of an emerging category, one on the verge of becoming a massive phenomenon. Together, Monster Energy’s Mark Hall and the Coconut Water brands O.N.E., ZICO and Vita Coco took the top spots in BevNET’s Best of 2009 awards. In any given year, in deciding on Product of the Year, BevNET compares the merits of a major energy drink or tea introduction by a large company with an intriguing suite of functional products by a newer company with great potential. Judges often debate the weight of factors like a single drink’s innovative qualities or a new product line’s sales growth. This year, the choice for BevNET’s Best Product of 2009 was an easy one, but it was complicated by the fact that this product’s functional benefits, innovative and environmentally beneficial packaging, execution, growth, and even attractiveness to investors have been simultaneously advanced by three fast-emerging Coconut Water brands: O.N.E., ZICO, and Vita Coco. “While the realities of competition will eventually create separation between these companies, together, they have laid the foundation for this product to become a major category in the U.S.,” said BevNET founder John Craven. “We are excited that they will share the award this year.” Competitiveness is also one of the major factors in the choice of Monster Energy’s Mark Hall as BevNET’s Best Innovator of 2009. This year, putting the pedal to the metal on innovation, Monster released a suite of three new products that tinker with the packaging, texture, carbonation and flavor of the energy drink category. By incorporating Nitrous Oxide, a long-lasting re-sealable can design and coffeehouse foam into three very exciting new products, Hall has proven that he and Monster aren’t just going to be satisfied with gains in distribution and sell-through, but that they will keep advancing products forms and raising the bar for their competitors to try to match
Product of the Year
Innovator of the Year
Best Energy Drink Best Packaging Innovation What do you do when many people in the business believe that the energy drink category has passed its peak in the US? If you’re Hansen Natural’s Monster Beverage Company, you look abroad, which is exactly what they did with their Monster Import product. Used in Europe since 2008, Monster Import employs can from Ball Packaging Europe that features the “Ball Resealable End.” As a result, Monster Import’s slim 18.6 ounce package is not only attractive looking, but extremely practical, as the can is capable of holding carbonation for days. What’s inside the can is quite enjoyable as well, with a tweaked formulation that’s one of Monster’s best tasting in a while.
Best Functional Beverage Best Product Re-Launch Code Blue, which is billed as a “recovery drink,” has a formulation whose benefits and functions are noticeable, despite not being loaded with caffeine. What you get from a can of Code Blue are both hydration and energy, thanks to a formula that’s loaded with electrolytes, amino acids, antioxidants (including Sustamine), and D-Ribose. It fits nicely in between energy and sports drinks, which are two categories that are ever converging – and we think that Code Blue has what it takes to potentially lead that merger.
Best New Organic Beverage Best New Carbonated Beverage Thanks to the dollars and lobbying power of some larger organizations, Steaz found a huge opening in the CSD market and launched this brand, the first USDA Organic-certified zero-calorie carbonated soft drink. With a stevia-erythritol sweetener and four strong flavors, the company has also simplified its offerings 28.BEVERAGESPECTRUM.NOVEMBER–DECEMBER.09
while making a stronger play for the healthy soda market. With a great looking new label and a unified brand, Steaz once again appears poised to create a sustainable organic alternative to a mainstream product line.
Best New Non-Carbonated Beverage Adina’s Holistics line is poised to do what many brands have for the past decade struggled to do: fill the giant shoes left by the likes of SoBe. Sure, they needed a heavy dose of John Bello, SoBe’s founder and now Adina’s CEO, to do it, but it works. The brand that Bello, along with Adina founder Greg Steltenpohl, have created blends just the right ingredients, including high quality flavor, great packaging, and an irreverent monkey character into something that’s fun and on point with what the mainstream but “trying to be healthy” consumer is looking for.
Best New Enhanced Water Cap dispensing technologies have been around for a while now, but there are very few companies who have figured out how to utilize them in a way that adds value rather than gimmickry to their brands. Enter Activate, whose enhanced water products come in a variety of different function and flavor combinations. Their approach is to keep the nutrients in the cap until the time of consumption, reducing the chance that they will deteriorate while the product is sitting on the store shelves. This, in our opinion, hints at a strong sense of responsibility for the bioavailability of the functional ingredients. Additionally, Activate’s package design is appealing and clean, with an easy-to-understand set of visual instructions contained on the back panel.
Best New Tea Best Packaging Design Guayaki’s Lemon Elation was not only the company’s first product to be packaged in aluminum, but it was also the first 30.BEVERAGESPECTRUM.NOVEMBER–DECEMBER.09
ready-to-drink yerba mate to go into this format. And it’s a knockout hit. While moving to a can isn’t by itself reason for an award, it’s a heck of a can. The design is complex, but not visually overwhelming and far from cluttered. Inside the package, Guayaki’s Lemon Elation is truly a special product. From a taste point of view, it’s extremely enjoyable and hits the low calorie (54 calories per serving) but great taste edge mainstream potential. Plus, there’s some potential for crossover into the energy category, thanks to the formulation’s 150 mg of natural caffeine per can. In both cases, Guayaki’s Lemon Elation sets the bar extremely high, with visuals and flavor – as well as functionality – creating something that we can see helping yerba mate enter the mainstream in a big way.
Best Marketing Campaign No corny jingles. No clips of people sipping the product and being happy. No A-list celebrity endorsements. And hardly any words. With that, Red Bull’s campaign has done it in a big way, showing the brand’s muscle using eye catching, culturally relevant, and awe-inspiring clips of the rule-defying lifestyle that seeks to emblemize.
Best New Energy Shot As the energy shot category unfolded over the past couple of years, Red Bull stayed on the sidelines. Many wondered if the company had missed its shot to crack the shot category. It turns out that Red Bull was actually using the time to its advantage, allowing the category to find its way a bit – and for manufacturing to evolve to the point where Red Bull would be able to create a product that meets the company’s
own rigorous internal standards. The result hasn’t been an overnight success, but it has quickly established the company as a player in the energy shot category, one that should have plenty of staying power. While the striking proprietary package and mellow noncarbonated formula are the clear descendants of their carbonated parent, the end product is something that will help reach new energy shot consumers and, in the end, expand the size of the market for everyone. It’s a decidedly mainstream product, which, like the core Red Bull brand, doesn’t make countless functional claims or offer some infinite number of hours of energy. Sometimes, less is more, and Red Bull is letting their brand, along with great flavor and packaging, speak for itself.
Best Kids’ Drink With Purple Carrot, First Juice adds a potent new flavor to a brand that tries to be on the “right side” of so many parental concerns. By infusing vegetables into a less-sweet, lower-calorie, lower-sugar, high-vitamin organic fruit juice/water mixture, and then putting it into a reusable (who doesn’t like that word better than recyclable) sippy cup, First Juice has raised the stakes on sustainability and nutrition for the rest of the category.
Best New Powder/Tablet Celsius has already done a great job of spreading its calorie-burning readyto-drink products to a wider audience, but here is a bit of functionality on the go that we think could really have legs. Taking the caffeine/EGCG mixture that powers its calorie-burning formula into a powder “stick pack” means that consumers can derive extra benefit beyond just flavor or vitamin C, two of the standard offerings for this format. As awareness of the Celsius name grows, the formula will likely be as important as the beverage – and this is a great way to take that formula with you, no matter where you are. •

BEVNET LIVE SHOWCASES ENTREPRENEURS
Capitalism, Consciousness, and Coca-Cola were all part of the mix out West. By: Matt Casey December’s BevNET Live conference in Santa Monica presented industry rock stars from The Coca-Cola Co., Inc. and 5-Hour energy amid a tableau of brands that make their impact, in part, through their consciences. With presentations and panels entitled “Getting Converts and Creating Categories,” and “Build a Conscious Brand – and Attract Investment Anyway,” the conference showcased entrepreneurs and investors who bring a greener, crunchier dynamic than their forerunners. That Southern California vibe briefly dispersed, however, to make way for two of the industry’s most powerful forces: 5-Hour Energy and The Coca-Cola Co., Inc.’s Venturing and Emerging Brands unit. Deryck van Rensburg, president of Coke’s Venturing and Emerging Brands unit, discusses the entrepreneurial beverage business.
32.BEVERAGESPECTRUM.NOVEMBER–DECEMBER.09
Deryck van Rensburg, president of VEB, outlined how Coke approaches the entrepreneurial beverage space. His unit generates products internally, van Rensburg, said – both through innovation and importation of overseas Coke products – but also grows through acquisitions. VEB acquires brands, he said, only if they add a unique offering to Coke’s portfolio, and only once the brand has the sales to prove that its concept works (usually between $10 and $50 million). Van Rensburg’s company suffered oblique potshots from Manoj Bhargava, founder and CEO of 5-Hour Energymaker Living Essentials, who presented a view of brand building that cuts against convention. He used what he called a “common sense” approach, he said, one free of consultants (something he joked was evident in the brand’s name), and instead employing pragmatic solutions to overcome obstacles. Instead of competing with Coke and Pepsi in the cooler, he said, he competed with key chains and lighters by the cash register. He also used small, independent distributors who sell products out of their trunks, and once had the company affix adhesive plastic hooks to his product’s caps to satisfy a convenience chain that would only accept 5-Hour if it could hang from a display rack. Moving from competition to consciousness, the conference provided presentations from companies with unconventional growth strategies: Sambazon co-founders Ryan and Jeremy Black presented their take on how building a company that values the rainforest as
highly as profits helped them find capital. Noted deal-maker Brent Knudsen echoed that sentiment during the panel discussion that followed: having a defined brand world-view, Knudsen said, acts as a filter that may discourage some investors, but intrigues and attracts others, which can lead to a better match between founders and investors. Steaz co-founders Eric Schnell and Steve Kessler aired their experience with how cooperating with retail partner Whole Foods furthered their brand. Schnell and Kessler said some product developments, like Steaz Energy, came at Whole Foods’ request. Others, they said, still came with deep involvement from the grocer on formulations, price-points and packaging. David Karr, co-founder of Guayaki Yerbe Mate, focused on how to build a successful brand while maintaining sustainability.

WINTER 2009
AWAY FROM THE PODIUM Away from the BevNET Live podium, a number of industry experts sat down with the BevNET film crew to make their predictions for trends that will shape
The program also featured many rising stars: David Karr, cofounder of Guayaki Yerba Mate; Greg Stroh and James Rouse, co-founders of MIX1; and Mark Rampolla, Michael Kirban and Rodrigo Veloso, the founders of ZICO, Vita Coco and O.N.E. coconut waters, respectively. T.J. Louderback, president of Bay Area Beverages, told attendees he sees a promising environment for entrepreneurial beverages, quipping “if this is as bad as it gets, we’re in pretty good shape.” With an eye toward getting more small brands over the hump and into distribution houses like Louderback’s, BevNET is planning another event, to be held in the summer of 2010 on the East Coast. Robert Groux, Kevin Watterson, Mark Muench, Shawn Nichols, and T.J. Louderback make up the distributor panel and discuss the best practices for beverage entrepreneurs attempting to gain distribution
the beverage market in 2010. Mark Hall, president of Monster Beverage Company, said he expected low-priced beverages to perform well in the coming year as families look to save money during these tricky economic times. That trend, he said, will have less of an impact on energy drinks, which cater to younger consumers with fewer financial responsibilities. The next year could also see the beginning of the “Decade of Zero,” based on the observations of David Blosser, an account manager with Coca-Cola Enterprises in California. His retailers have been making more room for Coke’s zero-calorie offerings, including Coke Zero, Fanta Zero and vitaminwater zero, he said. Consumers will also demand more products that are “super functional” with “real research” behind them, according to Chris Reed, Founder and CEO of Reed’s Inc. To that end, his company – during the conference – announced a ginger-based shot that Reed plans to have compete with overthe-counter drugs. Greg Steltenpohl, cofounder of Adina For Life, agreed with Reed’s assessment. Consumers are getting more sophisticated, he said, and want real, researched, natural functionality. “We no longer are going to wave fairy dust over products,” he said. “We’re going to have real ingredients, natural ingredients, that provide specific researched functionality.” For the videos of the above, as well as predictions from more beverage industry experts, visit bevnet.com/video.

Heineken hosts hip-hop tour
[yellow tail] open for anything
Heineken’s Red Star Soul 2009 hip-hop and R&B event visited nine U.S. cities ending in Miami. The invitation-only shows featured Ludacris, T-Pain, N.E.R.D., Big Boi, Wale, Mickey Factz and Melanie Fiona. The event also featured DJs Don Cannon, Clark Kent, DJ Mos, DJ Jus Ske, Mick Boogie, D-Nice, Jazzy Jeff and Biz Markie. The invitation-only concerts allowed lucky fans ages 21 and older to see their favorite performers in VIP club settings. Fans can access additional material at Heinekenredstarsoul.com.
[yellow tail] wine launched a multimedia campaign entitled “Open for Anything” on the weekend of October 24th that will air throughout the holiday season. The broadcast spots, created by the BurnsGroup (New York), were directed by Tarsem, winner of the Cannes Best Director award. The first commercial, entitled “Tragedy,” depicts a couple lamenting a spilled bottled of [yellow tail] wine through overthe-top operatic dialogue. However, the “tragedy” is averted when the man triumphantly reveals “We have more!” A second execution, entitled “Swirl,” shows a romantic meeting that occurs when [yellow tail] wine magically swirls from a woman’s glass into a man’s empty glass nearby. Moments later, the couple is married. Planned spending for the campaign for national television, online, and in-store is $7 million.
Hint partners with Disney HINT Inc. announced its fifth Disney feature film tie-in with a program tied to The Princess and the Frog. The animated tale hit theaters Dec. 11, 2009, and HINT created a special version of its Blackberry flavor that appeared on shelves one month earlier. The bottle features characters from the Disney film and is available at select grocery stores and retailers. HINT also conducted an online promotion at www.drinkhint.com, where consumers entered for a chance to win free tickets to the movie from November 11th through December 28th. One winner was announced each day and rewarded with two tickets to see the film at their local theatre.
