Welcome... Evening and Part Time Learning at Bexhill College Many adults enjoy attending an adult learning class in their spare time. Some want to learn a new skill, whilst others would like to gain a qualification to help them further their career. Evening and parttime courses at Bexhill College offer the opportunity to do both. The College offers professional qualifications such as certificates and diplomas in Health and Social Care or early years care and education, and GCSE’s, as well as a wide range of recreational courses which range from Reiki to painting, astronomy to cooking, languages to I.T. We hope there is something to interest everyone. All adults are encouraged to achieve qualifications to at least level 3 if they haven’t done so already. For adults between 19 and 23, where they are attempting a level 1, 2 or 3 course for the first time, there are no course fees – subject to the course being Government funded. Please ask for details as this fee remission may be the opportunity you need to improve your qualifications and your future employment prospects. Some adults may need to pass GCSE English or Maths; or develop their basic skills to improve employment prospects. Some adults would like to gain A Levels or BTEC National Diplomas and there is the opportunity to study alongside our daytime students, if this is your goal. If you just want to learn or develop new skills for fun, our recreational courses offer the opportunity to do this, and make new friends. Most courses are held at the main College site in Penland Road where there is plenty of onsite parking, and some are offered at the Adult Learning Centre, Jameson Mews, near Bexhill Station along with many courses for adult students with learning difficulties and disabilities. For further information contact the Adult Education Administrator at Jameson Mews on 01424 215746 ext 208. I hope there will be something to interest you in September 2014.

Maths GCSE

This is a stimulating and varied course which focuses on the development of language skills, through speaking and listening as well as writing, in a wide range of different contexts. We aim to provide as much individual help as possible based on your own needs and interests, with special emphasis on improving your basic writing skills.

This one-year course prepares students for the GCSE examination at Foundation Level, grades C to G. This is the standard GCSE Maths, which many jobs require at grade C. Assessment is by 2 examinations in May/ June, one calculator and one non-calculator. Students may opt to take the Higher tier examination, but will need to complete extra independent work on Higher topics outside of the classroom as the C to G topics are the main focus.

unit 1: exam Understanding and producing nonfiction texts (1 x 2 hour 15 minute exam) unit 2: Controlled assessments Speaking and listening (5 controlled assessments)

How will I be assessed? Coursework via controlled assessments count for 40% of the assessment. The remaining 60% is in an exam. Speaking and listening is awarded separately.

The course covers topics such as number work, algebra, shape, space and measure, and data handling. At the beginning of the course you will need a scientific calculator and you will be required to buy the recommended course materials, workbook and CDRom. Internet access is required to complete homework tasks. Mock assessment tests will be given during the year to assess your progress.

What could I do next? GCSE English is a crucial qualification for a very wide range of jobs and more advanced courses.

NB. The change from modular exams to linear exams is government led - all schools and colleges will now be taking linear Mathematics GCSE, which means that the two exams are both taken at the end of the course.
