MICRO INTERVENTIONS As an abstraction to the anatomical prosthesis, interventions are made in urban space. It not only optimizes the potential of unused spaces but also improves the quality of the neighborhood. In a good urban neighborhood, the ground floors of the buildings work symbiotically with the surrounding sidewalks and public spaces. Together they provide a continuous network of pathways and experiences. Diverse uses of ground floor spaces are conceived as a part of a connective system of public and commercial spaces. This creates a new type of community, consisting of those passing through, working and living within it. The degree of functionality can differ significantly from the scale of these interventions. The measure follows the question “What does the place need?”. Considering the human scale, a mix of uses, multifunctionality, flexibility, comfort and safety are important factors for designing a space that fits people’s needs. The ground floor of the existing housing complex defines a grid of vacant gaps, that can be filled with different functions.

The housing complex was built in the 1970s by architects Engelbert Eder, Anton Holtermann and Hugo Potyka, as part of a social housing movement in Vienna. The 400m long residential complex is located at the main road; Handelskai extending along the Danube.

The ground floor of the existing housing complex defines a grid of vacant gaps, that can be filled with different functions. These are divided into two categories by height: single and multistorey volumes.

In order to contribute to the current community a variety of public areas were created, thus filling the deserted regions. These interventions serve as "free-space" accesible to everyone.

As a result, infrastructural needs were translated into public and civic facilities, leading to a revival of the ground floor region.

A prosthesis in medicine refers to the replacement of limbs, organs or organ parts by artificially created functional similar products. As an abstraction to the anatomical prosthesis, interventions are made within the urban space.

The interventions can be categorized into three different sizes: S, M & L. S incorporates small components, objects which can be reallocated. M includes single storey developments with a height of 2,5m. Size L is the biggest intervention, which consists of a 5m, multistorey structure.
