The core foundation of the BFBG Awards is about cultivating opportunities and building a legacy for the next generation. Showcasing children in this issue with Janet Jackson was so important to me. The exposure that they will receive will last a lifetime and will encourage them to pursue their dreams with passion and vigour, through hard work and determination. We strive for excellence with each issue and choosing Janet Jackson as the cover was intentional, especially given her extensive contributions as a Black woman in the industry. The longevity of her career in beauty speaks to the immense talent in our community, which is why it was important for me to tell her story, and to celebrate her success. There are little girls and boys who are looking for someone like Janet Jackson to show them the ways in which their gifts can make room for them. Our editorial spread features the future of tomorrow - incredibly talented children alongside some of the finest creatives that are emerging from Montreal. A special thank you to my support system, my entire team, and everyone who has contributed to this magazine. I certainly couldn’t do it without you!

Demystifying Black Skin ARTICLE BY ORICA SMART FOUNDER OF THE O SPOT
Black Skin cracks, differently. Like myself, I am sure you have heard or used the phrase “black don’t crack” to describe the appearance of your skin. When we see Angela Bassett on our TV screens, we’re like, “YASSS honey… There it is! It’s that black don’t crack!!” Unfortunately, as much as I would like for us to claim this as one of our God-given superpowers, black skin does crack; it just cracks differently. There are so many false or misleading beliefs when it comes to black skin and black skincare. Whilst some of these false notions are harmless, others could negatively impact your health and damage your skin if you give credence to them. Here are some skincare myths that we should disregard to keep our skin looking the best. 1. “Black don’t crack.” Black don’t crack is not a skincare superpower, neither is it an excuse to not take care of your skin. As I said earlier, black does crack - just differently. The melanin in our skin maintains tightness, but as we age, the body produces less melanin and collagen, similar to other skin types, causing a reduction in elasticity and firmness. It is possible to develop a mottled appearance, that includes wrinkles, livers spots, melasma and aged spots. If we do not care for our skin, the breakdown could occur much earlier in life. A simple skincare routine consists of an effective cleanser that is suitable for your skin type, a gentle exfoliator used 2-3 times per week, a moisturizer that nourishes the skin and sunscreen that will protect your skin barrier. 2. “Dark skin does not get sunburnt.” I grew up in Jamaica and back in the day, wearing a hat was mandatory

when going outside. It was also typical to see both men and women using umbrellas as shade from the blistering sun. Our parents and elders were onto something – although it wasn’t properly articulated. The reason we were told to cover up from the sun was for fear of getting “bun up”, and I do not mean “burnt”. “Bun up” is a Jamaican term that means we’d get too dark. Black skin can blister and become painful just like other skin types. This is something that we need to understand. With this understanding, we will apply adequate sun protection. We should all be wearing hats, sunglasses, loose clothing, and even break out the umbrella to find shade when the Sun is at its peak. 3. “Sunscreen is not important.” This ties in with the point above. Though black skin was afforded a generous amount of sun protection due to melanin, a minimum of SPF30 is still needed to protect against UVA/B rays. Without sufficient protection, exposure can lead to skin cancer. While studies show that black people are less likely to get skin cancer, late detection causes us to die at a faster rate than other ethnicities. Melanoma cancer shows up more on the scalp and soles of our feet. Pay attention to abnormal growth and the colour and shape of moles. So yes – sunscreen is important, and the good news is that there are sunscreen brands developed specifically for our skin type. 4. “Colour coded skincare.” This is an important one. I am frequently asked about products that are specific to dark skin. When considering a skincare regimen, it is important to use products that are specific to your skin type and condition, not your skin colour. Think about whether your skin is normal, dry, oily or combination. You should consider whether you are prone to acne, eczema, or if you generally have sensitive skin. Product formulation and functionality is also far more important than the amount of melanin BFBGALA.COM

Hyaluronic Acid, a compound that is naturally produced by your body, is an ingredient used in most anti-ageing products to hold and prevent water loss, keeping the skin plump, hydrated and reducing wrinkles. that is present in your skin. P.S Put that oil down. Our skin does a good job of producing oil. Your skin needs hydration. Oil does not hydrate.
4.
5. “Anti-aging treatment? We do not need it.” This goes back to the black don’t crack adage. That fictitious superpower of ours. We believe we have some secret access to the proverbial fountain of youth. This way of thinking causes us to skip serums, eye creams, anti-ageing moisturizers or any product with that extra benefit. Ladies (and gents), here is the real secret – use anti-ageing products. Do you think Angela Bassett does not use anti-ageing products? OK – I have never met her, but if I was a betting person, I would put my pennies on “yes, she does”. No matter how good our genes are, external factors such as sun damage, pollution and lifestyle choices, can put a lot of stress on the skin. As a result, our skin will need more than a little help. So, yes, please go ahead and purchase that retinol or vitamin C serum and do not wait until the wrinkles and fine lines start to show up. Do it now! Your skin will thank you later in life. What skincare myth have you heard, and are ready to let go? Share with us on social media – we would love to hear from you! Orica Smart The O Spot skincare Clinic @theospot www.theospot.ca

anadian fashion designer and founder, Evangeli Anteros launched her brand, Anteros Designs a year ago in Montreal, Quebec. Starting as an interest, fashion became a great passion of Evangeli’s, eventually leading her into the creative world of a fashion designer. She stated that “everything fell into place. [Fashion is a way of expressing ourselves individually as] “it is a form of art, colour, self-expression, and one’s creativity.”
Evangeli’s personal style is very elegant, fun, and sometimes revealing. From growing up in British Columbia, Evangeli is originally from South Sudan, and born in Nairobi Kenya. She “grew up in a village with maybe no clothes at all.” This made her feel free. Anteros Designs reflects Evangeli’s personal style in more ways than one. The clothing focuses on comfort using lightweight, breathable, and silk materials, all while creating that chic, sexy, elegant and classy look. Evangeli wants women to feel “comfy, free, bold, intelligent, proud and empowered” when wearing her brand. Evangeli draws her inspiration from her imagination, along with her mother, who inspires her daily. She stays up to date with current trends through social media, as well as observing others. Evangeli loves “to design, and create something out of nothing”. For Evangeli, it is important that Anteros Designs works towards sustainable and ethical practices. “There is enough consumption of clothing out there and I don’t want to contribute [any more] to that.” She strongly believes in being eco-conscious and “feel[s] that we need to improve on lowering that number by using less plastic and more organic products.” Along with this, she feels as though the fashion industry can work towards having more female designers and becoming more diverse. She said that “there’re many talented women designers but not enough are where they should be due to lack of support.” Many individuals and businesses have been affected during this pandemic, including Anteros Designs. Evangeli remained positive and “found light within it’’. She saw this as an opportunity to give her more time to create and think. As a result, she is producing her new collection which will be available online in May 2020. The vision of Anteros Designs is to be known and recognized all over the world. Their mission is to build and open up facilities in Evangeli’s hometown of South Sudan as well as in Kenya and employ the women there. Anteros Designs long-term goal is to use 50% of the profits towards the facility to provide jobs and teach arts through Anteros Designs. “I want to give my soul to my creation and brand,” she said. In the next 5 to10 years, Evangeli is also looking to create a manufacturing company in Canada and in South Sudan where she can produce her brand as well as others. Evangeli knows that these goals will take time and patience, but she is prepared, and ready for the challenge by staying motivated, focused, and continuing to work hard.

MAKEUP
The M
Right
akeup is an illusion. Foundation isn’t to mask bad skin, it’s to even your skin tone.- Sam Fine
One thing that can be said is makeup is an accessory and is a lot of women’s favourite accessory. Makeup can be used to dress up or down an outfit, certain colours might complement certain skin tones more than others, etc. But one thing that is important with this particular accessory is having a great base; foundation. Before a deeper dive is taken into foundation, attention must be brought to the skin as it is the first step into ensuring a great makeup application. Drinking water, paying attention to foods that can cause inflammation, allergic reactions or sensitivity and creating a skincare routine that is executed daily are all important not only for makeup application but overall good health. Take care of the skin then move into foundation. So, what exactly is foundation? Foundation is a product applied to the face to create an even complexation; it is the base of the entire makeup look. Similar to building a house, if the foundation is not firm, then the whole house is unstable. But this usually is the hardest part when purchasing cosmetic products. Here are some things to consider before and while purchasing a foundation. First, think about the skin. Ask yourself these questions, “is my skin more oily, dry, normal or combination; does it easily react to things; do I have hyperpigmentation; do I have any skin conditions (i.e., sensitivity, eczema, etc.); do I have scars/acne scaring that needs to be covered?” Once a better understanding of the skin is achieved, the process of selecting the type and formulation of foundation becomes easier. This is also helpful and important information to give a beauty expert if assistance is necessary.
30 BFBG AWARDS
Time to ponder on coverage. “Do I want something that is light coverage, full coverage, buildable?” Light coverage foundations give a thinner layer of coverage on the skin helping create an even tone to the skin while medium coverage tends to better conceal some blemishes and dark circles. Full coverage, as the name indicates, usually covers almost everything (acne scars, hyperpigmentation, etc.) giving the skin a completely even tone. There’s an understanding of the skin and the coverage needed and desired, now consider the type of foundation required. Foundations can come in liquid, cream or powder forms. Liquid and cream tend to give more coverage while powders are on the lighter side and serve as great toppers. And within the different types, different formulations and finishes are available. To better grasp how the different elements come together, let’s take a look at Paba Cosmetics, a cosmetics brand created for women of colour by women of colour and assist four different women in their foundation selection. Princess has oily acne prone skin sensitive skin. She has some acne scarring so is looking for a foundation that will help cover marks but still feel light. Her best option within the Paba Cosmetics line will be the Perfect Finish Liquid Foundation which has medium buildable coverage so it will help conceal her dark spots and because of its water-based formulation would help her skin breathe therefore not irritating her sensitive skin. Then on top to combat the shine that will occur due to her oily skin, the Wet Dry foundation which is a pressed powder, will give her a finished look and help her oils from making an appearance throughout the day. Princess’s mom, Mary, is also looking for a foundation. Over the years, her skin has become drier so she wants a foundation that will help her BFBGALA.COM

skin look hydrated and also wants a powder she can wear with the foundation but can also wear alone. Mary should look into the Cream to Powder Foundation and the Wet Dry Foundation. The cream to powder foundation will help bring the appearance of hydration to her skin while still looking and feeling light. For and the Wet Dry foundation as it would work well on top of her cream foundation but can also be worn alone on the days she wants something lighter and if she lightly spritzes her brush before using the powder it will give her the look of a fuller coverage. Cathy is new to makeup and has a normal skin type that does not react much but can get a little shiny in her t zone (the middle of her forehead and down her nose) over time. She is looking for a foundation that will give her light to medium coverage and a matte look. She might want to consider the Paba HD Liquid foundation which will give her medium coverage and a matte finish. She should also consider getting the HD Loose Powder, which is a finely milled powder that adds light coverage and helps in her t-zone to mattify the shine. And lastly, there is Natalie who has combination skin (dry in some areas and oily in others) and little eczema. She wants a foundation that won’t irritate her eczema but enjoys a full glam look often. Natalie might consider the Perfect Finish Liquid Foundation because the water base won’t irritate her eczema but will give her full coverage. And top it with the HD Loose Powder for her oily areas especially but will still not be too dehydrating or heavy in her dry areas.

Yes, shopping for foundation can be intimidating but a few considerations ahead of time can ease the process. Remember makeup can be a great accessory but just make sure the base is always solid before building on top. Check out Paba Cosmetics (pabacosmetics.com) to see the products mentioned above. F
rom Montreal, Quebec, Etnika Accessoires celebrates, advocates, and embraces ethnicity, culture, and travel throughout their brand’s image. Their foundation is represented through diversity, equality and education. Designer and founder Shirly Delva, has been in the industry for over 20 years. She was introduced to the fashion world at an early age by her grandmother, who was a sewer, and her father who worked in the textiles industry. During her College studies, Shirly took an entrepreneur course, and it was then that Etnika Accessoires came to her. She instantly felt drawn to the name Etnika as it represents ethnicity, and with her love for travel, Shirly wanted to ensure “the goal of the company [would be] to travel [all] over the world” as she said. Before the true start of Etnika, Shirly went to Haiti, as she wanted to work with the people and manufacturers there. Unfortunately, she quickly learned that this mission would be extremely difficult to accomplish due to all the logistical challenges. This is what grew her drive and focus on being a local brand. Throughout Shirly’s creative process, she imagines who will be wearing her designs and how they will be wearing them. She gains her inspiration from the streets. From seeing how people dress and style. Her favourite part of being an accessories designer is when she gets “ to touch the textiles, [and] look at the colours.” The most popular accessory at Etnika Accessoires currently is the Turban. “People are always waiting for the new fabric in this style. The fanny pack is also a loved product” Shirly said.
founder & designer shirly delva discusses the future of etnika accessories Etnika is not only a fashion brand but a platform to educate its customers through travel. During Black History Month, Etnika Accessoires had a month-long segment where they posted different countries a few times a week. Each post had informative and educational descriptions of that specific country and their culture. “You have to know where it’s coming from, why it’s there, and what’s the story about it,” said Shirly. Learn, appreciate, and acknowledge the history, then wear it for a fashion purpose. “The industry today is getting better but can continue to work on becoming more equal and diverse. We have talented people over here [in Canada]. We need to bring back [the importance of Canadian fashion] and diversity. Fashion needs to be upgraded” she says. The message Shirly wants the world to know is to be positive with everything, even when times are difficult. “Are you ready to travel with me? Let’s go, we are going to discover the world or anything regarding arts and fashion. Are you ready? Yes? Okay so embark!” In the next 5 to 10 years Shirly is working towards being a manufacturer based in Montreal. The goal for Etnika Accessoires is to transition over to clothing and continue to build their team. Shirly said that “there’s a lot of things coming which is really nice” and exciting!

elebrity hairstylist, business owner of JouJou hair studio, and television guest expert – Janet Jackson is a woman of many accomplishments. While success stories typically focus on the destination, in this article we choose to highlight the process. Jackson opens up with BFBG by sharing her journey to becoming the hair mogul that she is today.
Surprisingly, Jackson started her professional career in social work and eventually moved into the corporate world.“I ventured into hairstyling as a part-time job to make ends meet. I was a single mom, just trying to get my shit together (literally)”. Along the way, she met one of her mentors Buster Berkley, who introduced her to another side of hairstyling. While working with Berkley, Jackson was able to assist with music videos and photoshoots igniting her passion for the industry. In 2009, Jackson’s career started to fall into place when she was asked to do her first TV appearance on the MuchMusic television show disBAND. Through the show, she was able to display her expertise and provide makeovers for the bands. Jackson concludes, “The rest was history!” She quickly learned that this was another passion of hers that she wanted to pursue. As more opportunities presented itself, her intention was to become a full-time stylist focusing on creative shoots and behind-the-scenes work with celebrities and TV personalities. “I had no idea that I would end up in front of the camera. It just happened!” She realized this was her career when she was able to take control over how far she could take hairstyling. She admits, “I never imagined that as a hairstylist, I would be working with celebrities, be on TV, own a salon, and be on the cover of a magazine – yeah right!” Despite her success, there are hardships and she shares that the pandemic has presented challenges for her salon. Jackson revealed, “I’m worried for my team and have no control over this part of the situation. I’m a team leader and I’m feeling helpless.” JouJou hair studio was created with the intention to teach and mentor stylists who were not formally taught in school while being an inclusive environment for all hair types. JouJou hair studio is an extension of Jackson and there is no other like it in the industry. It offers hair care for all textures. It also doubles as a venue for weddings, film, editorial shoots, and music videos to name a few. Jackson and her team have a genuine love for client satisfaction. “Being able to awaken the confidence that already exists inside. Whether it’s a client celebrity or TV makeover. My team and I enjoy making our clients happy, this is success to me and my brand.” Admittedly, Jackson shares that a lot has changed in the industry where networking is much easier. “Now you have social media which expands your network globally, all you need now is the right person or company to see your work and that’s it.”
Recently, Jackson has been offered a feature article in O magazine. Despite the attention, she is in awe of her success. She keeps her inspiration alive by admiring other hair artists around the world and in fashion. Jackson excitedly shares the opening of her newest and largest salon to date. She says, “I started out by myself in my basement, and now I have an entire team and staff.” Among all this success, Jackson is finally being seen in the industry both in Canada and in the US. To keep up, Jackson understands that she is forever a student as techniques and products constantly evolve. Staying relevant is also reflected in her personal style as she believes that first impressions set the tone for relationships. Jackson attributes her communication and empathy skills to her social work background, which has helped her to navigate the industry. Back in April 2020, these skills were used when she created her IG live series called “The Beauty Room”. Jackson says, “Quarantine inspired me to create this platform! I needed a way to keep me connected with a variety of people! I am a “creative” I don’t know how to do ‘nothing’. I created the beauty room to keep me busy.” Jackson believes that the series is something the industry needed, and is happy to continue creating episodes. Jackson has also launched classes and strives to promote inclusivity for all hair textures through her knowledge. While it is possible to experience burnout from her multiple responsibilities, she maintains sanity through sleep, laughter, quality time with loved ones and vacation. Jackson admits that time management is important and says, “I don’t know if I balance it well… But I do my damn best!” Jackson is constantly making lists so she doesn’t forget what needs to get done. She is eager to help create more positive impacts in the industry and understands that there are still ways to go. She believes beauty school curriculums need to be changed, hairstylists need to do more teaching and mentoring, and brands need to have more diverse teams. With that being said, she offers words of encouragement to anyone who wants to work in the industry and says, “Don’t be afraid, be unapologetic, and stand your ground. Be open to networking outside of your circle”. When asked about the advice she’d give herself if she were first starting out, she replied, “Sky’s the limit”.
“Don’t be afraid, be unapologetic, and stand your ground. Be open to networking outside of your circle”.
The industry is constantly changing, and Jackson has a willingness to keep up with trends. She says that social media helps a lot. “There’s always something new that I can learn. I realized that as long as I remain a student of hairstyling, and never think I know everything - I will be fine!” Jackson understands that there are always new products and techniques, and being a student who is constantly learning will keep her fresh. Social media, fashion, and maintaining a broad vision is what helps Jackson to stay relevant. Along with the excitement of trends and the direction that the industry is moving towards, some challenges emerge. As a salon owner, Jackson says it can be difficult to find artists who appreciate the opportunities afforded to them through JouJou hair studio. It is also a challenge to be taken seriously in an industry that labels you as a hairstylist who can only do “black hair”. This is why she emphasizes that artists should obtain a hair license. Jackson strives to positively impact the industry by creating exposure for Black hairstylists in different aspects of the industry. What makes her different is the BFBG AWARDS
focus she places on hair care, which could easily get lost in the art of the hair industry. Jackson’s passion has led her to work with many celebrities, but her most memorable work has been her opportunity to style Iman on Project Runway Canada for three seasons.
In the next couple of years, Jackson sees herself immersed in changing the narrative of beauty through television and mentoring. Her mission is to create change in the beauty industry by promoting inclusivity and more spaces for black hairstylists. She says, “I consider myself blessed with all the opportunities I have been given and continue to receive. But, I also work extremely hard, made many sacrifices, and most importantly never forgot where I have come from. I never forget to show my gratitude along the way”.
