BFBG | LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHING EDITOR AWARDS

"Championing the Black Men"

I

am beyond excited to feature some of Canada's Black men in fashion & beauty in this issue and have them share their stories, journeys to success and challenges that are sure to inspire other talents. The BFBG Awards Fashion Magazine is just the place to showcase the talents and black-owned businesses in Canada.

As a Celebrity Fashion Stylist, I've always love styling men and creating the right look that is in line with their personality and brands. With this shoot, I wanted to take the men out of their comfort zone by incorporating the ascot tie to give a more mature and GQ flare to their looks. I simply wanted them to elevate their brands. Although, I quickly realized that some of the men had challenges finding the pieces to complete their looks.

RHOWAN

FEATURED | INTERVIEWS RHOWAN JAMES RHOWAN JAMES @RHOWANJAMES

BY SANDRA GABRIEL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA CARTY

Rhowan James was born and raised in Toronto. From a young age, he loved to customize and create new accessories for his clothing. This pushed his passion for fashion as he always desired to create items that would fit his taste. As Rhowan would watch his father get ready for church on Sundays, he was fascinated by his sense of style. This taught him to develop his own style and take pride in his appearance and how he presented himself to the world. He knew he wanted to pursue the fashion but had no formal training in the industry. He aslo knew that teaching himself would be a challenge. However, through willpower, hard work and passion he learned every step in the process of design to master the craft. He taught himself to design, construct, cut and sew several of his own patterns. Once he had mastered his technical skills, Rhowan created his own designs and began to envision what he wanted for his menswear brand, designs which are often influenced by his travels and personal interests. Rhowan launched his brand in 2017 with a goal to give a fresh viewpoint to menswear and is already on his way to becoming a top international fashion brand for men. In his first large fashion show, the Toronto Men’s Fashion Week, his collection was influenced by the James Bond films. The complete collection included accessories, sporty outfits, swimwear, casual classics and formal outfits, enriched by traces of sparkling gold for a Hollywood effect. In 2018, Rhowan presented his first full collection which was an expansion of his James Bond Collection. Both of these have been featured in Vogue and his recent collection was featured in Shifter. He continues to share his successes and he encourages other small designers to write out their vision, seek advice, have no excuses and they can get it done.

SÉBASTIEN POKU SEBASTIANSTYLESS @SEBASTIANSTYLESS

BY SANDRA GABRIEL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA CARTY

Fashion stylist expert Sébastian is known for his vibrant and edgy touch with his own outfits and on his clients. He is a firm believer in fashion as a form of expression. He believes fashion highlights personality without having to speak. Sebastian often styles for creative content like photoshoots. More recently, his newest accomplishment is the launch of his hat brand. His hats have a classic and edgy style that uses 100% Australian wool, resulting in the softest and most skinfriendly material. Better than average wool, Sébastian wants to merge quality, affordability, and aesthetic in the hat market with his product. Their slogan is “Be a HeadMaster”—a statement that reinforces the brand’s quality product. Sebastian offers four different fedora-style hats retailing between $90-$95. Of the four hats, three are caramel coloured with different brims. While the fourth hat is a bone coloured fedora with a brown brim. Sébastian has successfully closed the gap between quality, style and affordability. Hats are an accessory that make a statement and his hats accomplish making a statement while enhancing customer personality and individuality.

The Black Fashion & Beauty Gala Humanitarian Award —DEBORAH MORIAH

W

e live in a time of global inequity. This year, especially, has revealed many injustices and a grave disproportion of basic human necessities. While most of the world tends to move on with life, ignoring the percentage of the population impacted by these disparities, there are individuals who have dedicated their own time and resources to bring about positive change and much needed aid to those less fortunate.

The BFBG Humanitarian Award is presented to a Black Fashion and Beauty creative or company who has demonstrated outstanding humanitarian aid. The recipient will have a proven dedication to the fight against human suffering, injustice and intolerance, the protection of life and the promotion of health and wellbeing on a local, national or international scale. The BFBG Humanitarian Award is a board nominated and selected award. The objective is to inspire others to contribute to positive change by recognizing this spirit of humanity and drawing public attention to humanitarian efforts. We look forward to celebrating the efforts of a Fashion and Beauty Industry creative or company who is passionate about closing the gap of inequality.

CHUKWUNONSO EZEKWUECHE DR. NONSKY @_NONSKY

BY SANDRA GABRIEL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA CARTY

Chukwunonso (Nonso) Ezekwueche aka Dr. Nonsky is from Anambra state but now lives in Toronto, Ontario. He graduated from the University of Benin, Edo state with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. When he moved to Canada in 2017, he began to pursue his passion as a men’s fashion influencer and is also working on getting his pharmacy licence to practice in Canada. He has had a passion for fashion from a young age, as his family members paved the way for him to go into the fashion industry. By working with brands both in Canada and internationally he was able to make visually alluring and resonating content which helped him to grow his brand to what it is today. Upon moving to Canada, Nonso noticed that men’s fashion was not as prominent here as in Europe and America. This inspired him to develop a social media profile that shows men how to use the basics they already have in their closet to create a remarkable look without spending a ton of money. This is where Nonso came up with his tagline: ‘showing men how to dress without breaking the bank’. He stresses that you don’t need luxury items or brand names to up your style. The trick is to find your personal style, check for the necessary basics in your closet, review what needs to be added to your closet and what needs to be discarded. He notes, knowing what you like and adding some staple pieces can have a significant effect on your self-esteem. Nonso’s advice to anyone who wants to make their mark as a fashion influencer is to be consistent and create content that you know resonates with your audience. By resonating with your audience, you create a sense of connection. When you collaborate with other fashion influencers, work with those who have similar values as you and learn from each other in the process. Nonso continues to make his mark as a fashion influencer in hopes to inspire and help others become the best version of themselves.

He has worked with Kennedy Cymone, Ceraadi, Latoya Forever, and Tyra Banks to name a few. Nelson takes a unique quality from each client and enhances it with his vision. He pushes each client's style to the next level while defining their individuality in the process. His growth since 2013 is only at the beginning stages. Nelson is a young stylist, YouTube personality and influencer to watch.

CHRIS REIGN CHRIS REIGN

@IAMCHRISREIGN BY SANDRA GABRIEL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA CARTY

Chris Reign fell into photography after working in other industries. Photography was always a hobby that he never intended to pursue as a career. Growing up, he would often edit images in Photoshop during spare time. One day, a family friend saw his work and asked him to take family photos. By word-of-mouth he started to make a career out of it. Although he never intended on becoming a photographer, he fell in love with it a few months into his success. He started out using Facebook as his outlet and within the past five years has developed a large following over Instagram. After gaining a following, Chris started to become inspired by the dedication and talent that comes out of Toronto. Through his work, he has been able to see a real light shining out of a city he notes is “starting to get noticed”. His focus is on the club scene but he also does editorial and portrait style shots. Chris notes his tipping point of success when he started to go out on his own as a photographer. In his first couple of years, he would work alongside promotion teams in Toronto for various clubs. However, it wasn’t until he going out on his own that he started to notice people reaching out to him, specifically club owners. He notes club photography is one of his favourite modes to photograph, as it is in the moment without any planning and the shots you get tell a story of the night. Chris continues to set himself apart in the photography industry by constantly producing fresh content.
