THE EXCEPTIONAL ICON

ith a new year came a fresh start and renewed hope. Then Covid-19 hit us and everything came to a standstill. Many have lost love ones and, as we reflect on what has transpired and how to move ahead with the current new normal, many continue to struggle to rebuild while others have been forced to shut the doors to their businesses. Still, many found a way to thrive through this pandemic or create new business ventures while others aren’t faced with that possibility.

FINALLY, AN AWARD REPRESENTING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF CANADIAN BLACK CREATIVES IN FASHION AND BEAUTY, AND WE’RE ONLY GETTING STARTED.

Over the past few months, our community continues to struggle with racism. The death of George Floyd and several other Blacks who have been killed sparked protests in the streets around the world. Social media posts with cries for justice forced fashion and beauty companies to address the lack of representation of Black creative talents and announce that they are ready to make up for their shortcomings. But are they really making that change by supporting the Black community or they just showing face?

- CHEVILLE SHAW

T

he BFBG Awards might be one year away from now, but one cannot help but feel the inspiration and excitement that comes along with being a part of Canada’s most prestigious Black Fashion & Beauty Awards night. Social inequity has always existed but with the recent turn of events from George Floyd, Breonna Taylor to Jacob Blake, we are now reminded that the support for US and by US is needed more than ever.

The Black Fashion & Beauty Gala Awards is in the midst of planning its first annual awards show that will acknowledge, foster education, and mentor up-and-coming talents. We are counting on those companies to support this event that will benefit the many creatives. We are focused on building, supporting and progression and it is my hope that something will be done about the systemic racism that exists in the industry.

The Canadian BFBG Awards’ aim is to support the many creative talents within Canada. The Archer Statuette was designed to symbolize our self-worth in a field that has never acknowledged the works of Black Canadians. During the creative process, designing the award was an intricate task and required much planning and execution. The statuette needed to embody how we view Black creatives in Canada—exceptional and brilliant.

With this in mind, we bring you the premiere issue of BFBG Awards magazine. We have placed our hearts and souls into its pages, featuring some of our most talented creatives and their brands in Canada. We now look ahead to featuring some of our most talented Black men in the Fashion & Beauty industry.

The Archer is a complex and prestigious symbol of achievement and contribution to the Canadian Fashion and Beauty industry. Forged from solid bronze then plated in gold, mounted on a solid marble base with the iconic archer figure in marble. The Archer statuette, depicting an archer shooting an arrow, represents the direction Black creatives are heading in beauty and fashion—above and beyond. The trophy is meticulously handcrafted from Canadian artisans, creating a true masterpiece of craftsmanship and extraordinary design.

FEATURED | INTERVIEWS AMELIA MITHCELL AMELIA DAVID COUTURE @AMELIADAVIDCOUTURE

BY SANDRA GABRIEL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA CARTY

Amelia David is a designer and pattern maker who owns her own boutique business. She specializes in bridal, galas and ball formal wear. She was born and raised in Trinidad where she lived until 1989. From a young age, Amelia has always been interested in drawing. She would focus on her art while other kids played outside. A lot of her drawings were sketches of dresses and other formal wear, revealing her love for fashion. When she was 13 years old, she started bringing her sketches to life and made her first dress which she wore to church. In high school, she took sewing for one of her final exams. Amelia knew she wanted to study Fashion and Design in post-secondary school, which she did for 3 years before attending Teacher’s College. Amelia worked for 10 years in the fashion industry in Trinidad teaching fashion before moving to Toronto. She worked part-time with the Toronto District School Board, while continuing her work in the bridal industry. Her first instinct was to pursue mass production, but she soon realized she preferred the individuality of 7 to 1 designing which prompted her to open her own business. What sets Amelia David Couture apart in the industry are her unique designs. She never makes any piece the same and if she designs a similar style, she ensures it either has a different texture or colour. She also takes into consideration her client's personality and preferences. Her pieces are styled to fit. She sketches out each design and customizes it to the client's exact measurements. Amelia has worked in the fashion industry for 40 years and has taught for 20 years. She will soon be retiring from teaching to focus on her business, while continuing to specialize in formal wear for special occasions. She also hopes to work with celebrities in the future.

GAIL & LESLIE THOMPSON THE LONG & SHORT OF STYLE @THELONGANDSHORTOFSTYLE

BY SANDRA GABRIEL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA CARTY

The Long and Short of Style is a sibling duo from Montreal, named Gail and Leslie, who are now Toronto-based. These two sisters, with completely different body types, value body positivity. They cater to all shapes and sizes through their clothing designs. Both sisters went through the trials and tribulations of figuring out what worked for their body types. They grew up loving fashion but never knew how to dress for their bodies. Through education and perseverance, they eventually discovered how to express themselves through fashion, and thus began their first venture—Fab Four Fashion, a blog-style platform created with two friends. The blog showcased positive images of Black women of all different sizes expressing themselves through fashion as well as highlighting their style struggles. The goal of this project was to represent the types of women many magazines do not showcase and to be positive role models for younger generations. Growing up, the sisters didn’t have any examples of Black women in fashion, so their goal has always been to close that gap. Leslie’s style has evolved over the years and, as a woman who lives with visual impairment, she is very open about her disability. When she was younger, she would blend into the crowd with her style choices. Now she uses fashion in order to draw attention to herself and her personality instead of her disability. She notes that the first thing people usually notice about her is her outfit. Gail’s style has also progressed over the years. She notes that when she was younger there were not a lot of options for plus-sized fashion. She so greatly wanted to express herself, but found that a lot of places did not carry her size. As a long-time fashion lover, and with the plethora of options we see in stores today, she is grateful to be able to express herself with a variety of colours, patterns and outfit combinations. Leslie and Gail continue to be symbols of self-expression and great role models to current generations through their blogging ventures. Learn more about this dynamic duo by visiting their blog, The Long and Short of Style.

ISRAELLA KOBLA @ISRAELLAKOBLA

BY SANDRA GABRIEL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA CARTY

Emefa Kuadey is a British-born Ghanaian designer and founder of Israella KOBLA, based in Toronto. Her story is unique. Kuadey has a background in Civil Engineering but, when her brother unexpectedly passed away in 2012, she travelled back to Ghana where she discovered her a passion for pattern drafting and sewing. Upon her return to Canada, Kuadey finished her engineering degree while maintaining her new-found creativity on the side. She initially only created clothing for her friends for fun. However, two years into her engineering career, she decided to pursue fashion. Kuadey took a course in fashion at George Brown College and moved to Toronto to develop her brand. Kuadey has taken the elements she has learned from engineering and incorporated them into her brand mission. She is aware of the sustainability concern in fashion and does her best to remain ethical. Her brand mission is to be sustainable while maintaining practicality and good design. Even if the fabric is simple, she wants the design to accentuate timelessness and minimalism. Kuadey believes good design is more than an aesthetic; it is part of her brand ethic and should be environmentally friendly. She achieves this through a made-to-order model. She also recycles and donates as much as possible. Kuadey sources locally to reduce transportation impact, uses reusable packaging and provides consumers with care instructions to avoid premature discard. Her background in engineering has been a positive addition, not only to her brand aesthetic, but to ethics in general.

MALLORY PARKER PARKER HUE @PARKER.HUE

BY SANDRA GABRIEL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA CARTY

Parker Hue is an up and coming shoe brand that has eccentric styles for exceptional glam. Mallory Parker is the face and founder behind Parker Hue. The goals and direction for her brand are limitless. Parker Hue does not follow the current trends but creates their own trends. Although Parker has a large vision for her brand, it is inspired by sentimental experiences. Parker reveals the details of creating her products and how there is meaning behind her creation. Her father is a musician. As such, she names her shoes after songs that have a sentimental value between herself and her family. Much of her inspiration and brand mission is rooted in her love for her family. Parker looks up to her sister and mother as her style icons and fell in love with the unpredictability in their statement pieces. Parker’s vision for her brand is to make a statement with shoes. This statement demands attention from unique styles, but also sends a message with the story it holds. Parker wants her brand to be distinctive and luxurious. Parker Hue was created to be a designer brand and for each piece to be an art form. This is achieved through each design and the sentiment with each piece, bringing together style and meaning. Despite being new to the game, Parker is excited and anticipates a bright future in fashion. She is open to opportunity and wants to grow her brand in the direction of luxury through their statement pieces.

Zola Zee is a Style Curator based in Toronto, Ontario. She is a social worker by day and a stylist by night. Having obtained a Masters in Social Work, Zola is a trained trauma worker with a focus on advocating for youth criminal justice. When she is not practicing social work, Zola has a diverse clientele ranging from the Canadian Country Music Awards to TIFF. Most of her work in the fashion industry is to create looks for TV, print, red carpets and music videos. Zola Zee’s slogan is “Fashion is prescriptive. Style is descriptive.” As she explains, style is not about how much a piece costs but rather how the outfit itself looks. She notes that, if you have an eye for style, you can look great at any price point. She considers fashion to be an equalizer, where anyone can have style if they try. Active on Instagram, Zola’s advocacy background shines through her posts. She consistently brings awareness to topics that need to be discussed. In one of her most recent posts, she wears a mask and shirt that says “I can’t breathe” in front of George Floyd street art. Her work is not only a place for expression through clothing but a fierce and fertile ground for activism and advocacy.

The Black Fashion & Beauty Gala Humanitarian Award —DEBORAH MORIAH

W

e live in a time of global inequity. This year, especially, has revealed many injustices and a grave disproportion of basic human necessities. While most of the world tends to move on with life, ignoring the percentage of the population impacted by these disparities, there are individuals who have dedicated their own time and resources to bring about positive change and much needed aid to those less fortunate.

The BFBG Humanitarian Award is presented to a Black Fashion and Beauty creative or company who has demonstrated outstanding humanitarian aid. The recipient will have a proven dedication to the fight against human suffering, injustice and intolerance, the protection of life and the promotion of health and wellbeing on a local, national or international scale. The BFBG Humanitarian Award is a board nominated and selected award. The objective is to inspire others to contribute to positive change by recognizing this spirit of humanity and drawing public attention to humanitarian efforts. We look forward to celebrating the efforts of a Fashion and Beauty Industry creative or company who is passionate about closing the gap of inequality.
