Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission One of three Cathedrals in the Church of England Diocese of Leeds
Our purpose is to serve Jesus Christ as a vibrant community of worship and mission enriching the City, the Diocese and further afield. ❖ A very warm welcome to Bradford Cathedral for this service, particularly if you are visiting or with us for the first time. We hope you will stay and enjoy refreshments with us after the service, which will be served at the West End of the Cathedral. ❖ Please join in with saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service, and sit or stand as directed if you are able. Large print copies are available from the stewards at the main door. ❖ As part of our work to keep you safe and healthy, we are keeping some windows and doors open to make sure the Cathedral is well ventilated, which may mean parts of the nave are cold. We advise you, where you can, to dress warmly when attending a service. ❖ Children’s Space takes place in the Parish Room. Please take your child to the Children’s area by the north door during the first hymn. They return and sit together during the administration of Communion. Today’s Eucharist is sung by the Boys and Lay Clerks of the Cathedral Choir. The choral setting is the Communion Service in F by Harold Darke (1888-1976). ❖ If you need to, please sit down at any point in the service, even if the instruction is to stand. It is more important for you to be comfortable and safe. We will be pleased to help you if you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer. Please speak with one of the stewards at the main door before the start of the service. We apologise that the Hearing Enhancement Loop is not working. There will be no collection taken during the service but you are invited to make a donation to the Cathedral using the donations box by the door, or online, through the Cathedral website. ❖ In the event of an emergency, please remain calm and seated. Stewards will direct you out of the Cathedral.

Solemn Prelude, For the Fallen Spirit of England – E. Elgar (1857-1934)
Welcome and Greeting The Reverend Canon Philip Gray, Acting Precentor We stand. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you and also with you.
Hymn O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home; Under the shadow of thy throne thy saints have dwelt secure; sufficient is thine arm alone, and our defence is sure. Before the hills in order stood, or earth received her frame, from everlasting thou art God, to endless years the same. A thousand ages in thy sight are like an evening gone, short as the watch that ends the night before the rising sun. Time, like an ever-rolling stream, bears all its sons away; they fly forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day. O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, be thou our guard while troubles last, and our eternal home. Isaac Watts (1674-1748), Psalm 90 ST ANNE, CP 537

We remain standing.
Prayers of Penitence Let us confess to God the sins and shortcomings of the world; its pride, its selfishness, its greed; its evil distortions and hatreds. Let us confess our share in what is wrong, and our failure to seek and establish that peace which God wills for all he has made. Silence Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We remain standing as the choir sings
Gloria in Excelsis Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy, thou only art the Lord, thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art Most High, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The president introduces a period of silent prayer.
Prayer of the day Almighty Father, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the King of all: govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations, divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his just and gentle rule; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. We sit.
First Reading
Hebrews 10.11-14, 19-25 read by Borbala Benko
Every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, ‘he sat down at the right hand of God’, 13 and since then has been waiting ‘until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet.’ 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. 19 Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence We remain standing.
Choir Choir
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heaven. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. 5
Luke 19.38
Gospel Reading
Mark 13.1-8 read by the Revd Canon Rod Anderson, Cathedral Chaplain
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!’ 2 Then Jesus asked him, ‘Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.’ 3 When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4 ‘Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?’ 5 Then Jesus began to say to them, ‘Beware that no one leads you astray. 6 Many will come in my name and say, “I am he!” and they will lead many astray. 7 When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs.
This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.
Sermon
After an opening prayer, we sit. The Reverend Canon Mandy Coutts, Canon for Mission and Pastoral Development Silence We stand.
The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 6
We remain standing and turn to face West as the procession moves to the War Memorial.
Act of Remembrance Let us remember before God, and commend to his sure keeping those who have died for their country in conflict: those whom we knew, and whose memory we treasure and all who have lived and died in the service of humanity. The names of those lost in action during the First World War are read and a wreath is laid by Squadron Leader (Ret'd) Martin Cosgrove RAF (Ret'd). They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old: age shall not weary them nor the years condemn. at the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them. We will remember them. The Last Post Two Minutes’ Silence The Reveille The Kohima Epitaph is proclaimed: When you go home tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow we gave our today. Ever-living God, we remember those whom you have gathered from the storm of war into the peace of your presence; may that same peace calm our fears, bring justice to all peoples and establish harmony among the nations, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
National Anthem God save our gracious Queen, long live our noble Queen, God save the Queen. Send her victorious, happy and glorious, long to reign over us, God save the Queen. After the clergy have returned to the front of the Cathedral, we kneel or sit to pray.

Prayers of Intercession
Led by Chris Coupland
In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or another, response is used Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer. At the end Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. We stand.
Giving and Receiving Peace Jesus said, ‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives’. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of peace, and offer our gifts to God. The Table is set with bread and wine.
Hymn All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; him serve with fear, his praise forth tell, come ye before him, and rejoice. The Lord, ye know, is God indeed; without our aid he did us make; we are his folk, he doth us feed, and for his sheep he doth us take. O enter then his gates with praise, approach with joy his courts unto; praise, laud, and bless his name always, for it is seemly so to do.
8
For why? The Lord our God is good; his mercy is for ever sure; his truth at all times firmly stood, and shall from age to age endure. To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, the God whom heaven and earth adore, from men and from the angel-host be praise and glory evermore. William Kethe (d. 1594) Psalm 100 in Anglo-Genevan Psalter 1560 OLD HUNDREDTH, CP 369
Great Thanksgiving Prayer
It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise, holy Father, heavenly King, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. And now we give you thanks that he is the King of glory, who overcomes the sting of death and opens the kingdom of heaven to all believers. He is seated at your right hand in glory and we believe that he will come to be our judge. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Choir Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. 9
All glory be to you, our heavenly Father, who, in your tender mercy, gave your only Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there by his one oblation of himself once offered a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world; he instituted, and in his holy gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again. Hear us, merciful Father, we humbly pray, and grant that, by the power of your Holy Spirit, we receiving these gifts of your creation, this bread and this wine, according to your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ's holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Great is mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Therefore, Lord and heavenly Father, in remembrance of the precious death and passion, the mighty resurrection and glorious ascension of your dear Son Jesus Christ, we offer you through him this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Grant that by his merits and death, and through faith in his blood, we and all your Church may receive forgiveness of our sins and all other benefits of his passion. Although we are unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer you any sacrifice, yet we pray that you will accept this the duty and service that we owe. 10
Do not weigh our merits, but pardon our offences, and fill us all who share in this holy communion with your grace and heavenly blessing; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. We kneel or sit. Silence
The Lord’s Prayer Uniting our prayers with the whole company of heaven, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. As the ministers receive communion the choir sings O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: grant us thy peace.
11
Please stand in your place if you would like to receive the bread of communion. Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer. When the communion administrant says The body of Christ we respond Amen. If you are at home and unable to receive communion, you may wish to use this prayer, after Richard of Chichester: Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.
Communion Motet O for a closer walk with God, a calm and heavenly frame; a light to shine upon the road that leads me to the Lamb. Return, O holy Dove, return, sweet messenger of rest; I hate the sins that made thee mourn, and drove thee from my breast. So shall my walk be close with God, calm and serene my frame: so purer light shall mark the road that leads me to the Lamb. Words: William Cowper (1737-1800) Music: C. V. Stanford (1852-1924)
Silence
Prayer after Communion God of peace, whose Son Jesus Christ proclaimed the kingdom and restored the broken to wholeness of life: look with compassion on the anguish of the world, and by your healing power make whole both people and nations; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen We stand.
12
Act of Commitment Let us commit ourselves to responsible living and faithful service. Will you strive for all that makes for peace? We will. Will you seek to heal the wounds of war? We will. Will you work for a just future for all humanity? We will. Merciful God, we offer to you our aspirations and fears: may we receive by grace the love and hope you reveal, and so live in justice, courage and mercy; through Jesus Christ our risen redeemer. Amen.
Hymn Thy kingdom come, O God, thy rule, O Christ, begin; break with thine iron rod the tyrannies of sin. Where is thy reign of peace and purity and love? When shall all hatred cease as in the realms above? When comes the promised time that war shall be no more, and lust, oppression, crime shall flee thy face before? We pray thee, Lord, arise, and come in thy great might; revive our longing eyes, which languish for thy sight. O’er lands both near and far thick darkness broodeth yet: arise, O Morning Star, arise, and never set! Lewis Hensley (1824-1905) ST CECILIA, CP 607
