Bradford Cathedral, Stott Hill, Bradford, BD1 4EH T: 01274 777720 2

Welcome The Chapter of Bradford Cathedral welcomes you to this service. In our worship today we remember before God all those who work for the administration of justice and the security of society, pray for their work and thank God for the blessings of impartiality and tolerance, justice and mercy. The service is shaped around the order of Matins, the traditional morning service of the Church, which comes from the monastic offices which go back to the early centuries of Christian history. As we remember our ecclesiastical heritage, we remember also the legal inheritance for which our forebears strived and from whose work and perseverance we now benefit.

The Cathedral One of Yorkshire’s lesser known dales, ancient Bradford-dale was settled in Anglian times around the ‘broad ford’ which gave the city its name. The crossing place became a gathering place which gradually became a great city, welcoming and absorbing incomers from all over the world. Throughout thirteen turbulent centuries, there has been a place of prayer and worship on this hillside. Although it was attacked three times and ruined twice, this church has been rebuilt by people of faith for the future. The medieval nave and Tudor tower are landmarks of faith, drawing people into the welcoming space of the Cathedral and its grounds. As a civic church we have vital connections with the City and its institutions and, as a cathedral church, with a diocese that reaches out across West Yorkshire & the Dales. Day by day through our prayer, worship and work in this beautiful building, and through involvement in the wider community, we serve the people of our City, District and Diocese in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.

The Cathedral Choir Bradford Cathedral Choir is made up of two independent top lines of boys and girls who sing regularly with our choral scholars and volunteer adult singers. The Choir sings for the Choral Eucharist at 10.15am, and at Evensong on Sunday at 4.00pm, and at 5.45pm on Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays during term time. In addition, the Choir pursues a schedule that includes giving recitals and singing services elsewhere and going on tours to other parts of the UK. Today’s service is sung by the Cathedral Choir, conducted by the Director of Music, Alex Berry and accompanied on the organ by the Assistant Director of Music, Graham Thorpe.

Once the Lord-Lieutenant has reached his seat, we join together in singing: God save our gracious Queen, long live our noble Queen, God save the Queen. Send her victorious, happy and glorious, long to reign over us: God save the Queen. Thy choicest gifts in store on her be pleased to pour, long may she reign. May she defend our laws, and ever give us cause to sing with heart and voice, God save the Queen. We sit

Welcome & Opening Prayer The Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Dean of Bradford O God, you have given us minds that we might know you, hearts that we might love you and voices that we might show forth your praise: help us now to worship you with understanding, with reverence and with joy; for the glory of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen We stand

Hymn Praise, my soul, the King of heaven, to his feet thy tribute bring; ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, who like me his praise should sing? Alleluia, alleluia, praise the everlasting King. Praise him for his grace and favour to our fathers in distress; praise him still the same for ever, slow to chide and swift to bless: Alleluia, alleluia, glorious in his faithfulness. 5

Father-like he tends and spares us, well our feeble frame he knows; in his hands he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes: Alleluia, alleluia, widely as his mercy flows. Angels, help us to adore him; ye behold him face to face; sun and moon bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space: Alleluia, alleluia, praise with us the God of grace. Words: Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847) Tune: ‘Praise My Soul’; John Goss (1800-1880); CP 555

Prayers of Penitence As we celebrate our freedoms and dedicate ourselves again to serve God and one another, let us first call to mind and confess those ways in which, both as individuals and as a society, we fail to live up to our calling to live in love and peace for the well-being of all. Silence Let us confess our sins to Almighty God. Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour, in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life, to the glory of your name. Amen.

6

Almighty God, who in Jesus Christ has given us a kingdom that cannot be destroyed, forgive us our sins, open our eyes to God’s truth, strengthen us to do God’s will and give us the joy of his kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. As our Saviour taught us, we are bold to say: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Jubilate Deo sung by the choir O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands: serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him and speak good of his Name. For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting. and his truth endureth from generation to generation. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Music: Benjamin Britten (1913–1976); Words: Psalm 100 7

Old Testament Reading

Micah 3.1-5

Read by Gill Arnold JP DL, Deputy Chairman, West Yorkshire Bench

And I said: Listen, you heads of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel! Should you not know justice?— 2 you who hate the good and love the evil, who tear the skin off my people,* and the flesh off their bones; 3 who eat the flesh of my people, flay their skin off them, break their bones in pieces, and chop them up like meat* in a kettle, like flesh in a cauldron. 4

Then they will cry to the Lord, but he will not answer them; he will hide his face from them at that time, because they have acted wickedly. 5

Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets who lead my people astray, who cry ‘Peace’ when they have something to eat, but declare war against those who put nothing into their mouths. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God Silence We stand

Hymn Judge eternal, throned in splendour, Lord of lords and King of kings, with thy living fire of judgment purge this realm of bitter things: solace all its wide dominion with the healing of thy wings.

Still the weary folk are pining for the hour that brings release: and the city's crowded clangour cries aloud for sin to cease; and the homesteads and the woodlands plead in silence for their peace. Crown, O Lord, thine own endeavour; cleave our darkness with thy sword; cheer the faint and feed the hungry with the richness of thy word; cleanse the body of this nation through the glory of the Lord. Words: Henry Scott Holland (1847-1918) Tune: Rhuddlan; Welsh traditional; CP356

New Testament Reading

Hebrews 2.14-end

Read by His Honour Judge Durham Hall QC, Honorary Recorder of Bradford 14

Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. 16For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. 17Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. 18Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God

Sermon The Very Reverend Dr Helen-Ann Hartley Silence

Anthem

sung by the choir

Blessed city, heavenly Salem, vision dear of peace and love, who of living stones art builded in the height of heaven above, and by Angel hands apparelled as a bride doth earthward move. Out of heaven from God descending, new and ready to be wed to thy Lord, whose love espoused thee, fair adorned shalt thou be led; all thy gates and all thy bulwarks of pure gold are fashioned. Bright thy gates of pearl are shining, they are open evermore; and, their well-earned rest attaining thither faithful souls do soar. Who for Christ’s dear name in this world pain and tribulation bore. Many a blow and biting sculpture polished well those stones elect, in their places now compacted by the heavenly architect. Nevermore to leave the Temple which with them the Lord hath decked. To this Temple, where we call thee, come, O Lord of hosts, today; with thy wonted loving kindness hear thy servants as they pray; and thy fullest benediction shed within its walls alway. Amen. Music: Edward Bairstow (1874–1946) Words: Office hymn for the Dedication of a Church; tr. J.M. Neale (1818–66)

Hymn All my hope on God is founded; he doth still my trust renew. Me through change and chance he guideth, only good and only true. God unknown, he alone calls my heart to be his own. Pride of man and earthly glory, sword and crown betray his trust; what with care and toil he buildeth, tower and temple, fall to dust. But God’s power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower. God’s great goodness aye endureth, deep his wisdom, passing thought: splendour, light, and life attend him, beauty springeth out of naught. Evermore from his store new-born worlds rise and adore. Daily doth th’Almighty giver bounteous gifts on us bestow; his desire our soul delighteth, pleasure leads us where we go. Love doth stand at his hand; joy doth wait on his command. Still from man to God eternal sacrifice of praise be done, high above all praises praising for the gift of Christ his Son. Christ doth call one and all: ye who follow shall not fall. Words: Robert Bridges (1844-1930); based on the German of Joachim Neander Tune: Michael; Herbert Howells (1892-1983); CP 368

Prayers

Led by His Honour Judge Jonathan Gibson

In the power of the Spirit, and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. What does the Lord require of you? To love mercy, to do justice and to walk humbly with our God. What does the Lord require of you? To support the widow and orphan, the poor and the vulnerable and the victims of injustice and greed. What does the Lord require of you? To care for the hungry, the naked, prisoners, the homeless, the refugee and those who seek protection. What does the Lord require of you? To be open to the breadth of God’s embrace, to join our praise with those who know God’s glory and to bring peace and well-being to all. Merciful God, strengthen by your Holy Spirit all who work for justice throughout the world, that your kingdom of peace, love and righteousness may come on earth as it is in heaven. We remember before you those nations and people who live in constant fear of oppression and tyranny, and we pray that integrity and justice may prevail. Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer. Merciful God, bless all who work for justice throughout West Yorkshire. We remember before you our colleagues of all professions who seek to help those who struggle to find a right direction in life. Guide us as we make decisions about the lives and deaths of others, that we may show forth your wisdom and compassion. Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer. Merciful God, be with all who are victims of crime and injustice; give them a sense of hope and peace of mind as they face the future. Touch and heal all those whose lives are scarred by cruelty and abuse; those damaged through neglect and a lack of love. Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer. 12

Merciful God, we pray for those who have been convicted of crime and who are fulfilling the requirements placed upon them. We pray that they may know a change of mind, and receive the support they need to amend their ways. Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer. Merciful God, we give thanks for all who support us in whatever capacity: our families and friends, our colleagues. Nurture in us the gift of faith, that we may know more clearly your love throughout our lives, and show forth the light of your presence in all we do. Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer. Gracious and holy Father, give us wisdom to perceive you, intelligence to understand you, diligence to seek you, patience to wait for you, eyes to behold you, a heart to meditate on you, and a life to proclaim you; through the power of the Spirit of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. A Prayer of St Benedict (480-547)

Hymn During this hymn a collection will be taken towards the ministry of the Cathedral Please gift-aid your donation if you can, using the envelopes provided Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy, whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy, be there at our waking, and give us, we pray, your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day. Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe, be there at our labours, and give us, we pray, your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day. Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace, your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace, be there at our homing, and give us, we pray, your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day. 13

Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm, whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm, be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray, your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day. Words: Jan Struther (1901-1953) Tune: Slane; Irish traditional; CP 507
