Welcome and notices The Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Canon Precentor We stand Silence In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Hymn during which the children leave for Children’s Space The kingdom of God is justice and joy, for Jesus restores what sin would destroy; God’s power and glory in Jesus we know, and here and hereafter the kingdom shall grow. The kingdom of God is mercy and grace, the captives are freed, the sinners find place, the outcast are welcomed God’s banquet to share, and hope is awakened in place of despair. The kingdom of God is challenge and choice, believe the good news, repent and rejoice! His love for us sinners brought Christ to his cross, our crisis of judgement for gain or for loss. God’s kingdom is come, the gift and the goal, in Jesus begun, in heaven made whole; the heirs of the kingdom shall answer his call, and all things cry ‘Glory!’ to God all in all. Words: Brynn Rees (1911-1983) Tune: HANOVER; CP 591
The Greeting The Lord be with you and also with you. We sit and the parents and godparents remain standing.

Introduction We rejoice today with the family of Jazmin and Yahya as they thank God for the gift of life and bring their children for baptism. God our creator, we thank you for the wonder of new life and for the mystery of human love. We give thanks for all whose support and skill surround and sustain the beginning of life. As Jesus knew love and discipline within a human family, may these children grow in strength and wisdom. As Mary knew the joys and pains of motherhood, give these parents your sustaining grace and love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Presentation Faith is the gift of God to his people. In baptism the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling. People of God, will you welcome these children and uphold them in their new life in Christ? With the help of God, we will. Parents and godparents, the Church receives these children with joy. Today we are trusting God for their growth in faith. Will you pray for them, draw them by your example into the community of faith, and walk with them in the way of Christ? With the help of God, we will. In baptism these children begin their journey in faith. You speak for them today. Will you care for them, and help them to take their place within the life and worship of Christ’s church? With the help of God, we will.

We stand as the choir sings
Gloria in excelsis Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy, thou only art the Lord, thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Prayer of the day The president introduces a period of silent prayer Eternal God, whose Son went among the crowds and brought healing with his touch: help us to show his love, in your Church as we gather together, and by our lives as they are transformed into the image of Christ our Lord. Amen. We sit
New Testament Reading
1 Corinthians 2.1-12 read by Susan Ibnouzaki
When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. 2For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. 4My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God. 5
6
Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish. 7But we speak God’s wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. 8None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9But, as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him’— 10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11For what human being knows what is truly human except the human spirit that is within? So also no one comprehends what is truly God’s except the Spirit of God. 12Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence We stand
Hymn Blest are the pure in heart, for they shall see our God; the secret of the Lord is theirs, their soul is Christ’s abode. The Lord, who left the heavens our life and peace to bring, to dwell in lowliness with men, their pattern and their King; Still to the lowly soul he doth himself impart, and for his dwelling and his throne chooseth the pure in heart. Lord, we thy presence seek; may ours this blessing be; give us a pure and lowly heart, a temple meet for thee. Words: John Keble (1792-1866) and others Tune: FRANCONIA; Harmonischer Liederschatz (1738); CP 391

Gospel Reading
Matthew 5.13-20
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. ‘You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. 14
‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. 17
‘Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfil. 18For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. 19Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After an opening prayer, we sit
Sermon The Reverend Paul Booth, Cathedral Chaplain Silence We stand We stand and face west as the Minister, parents and godparents move to the font. 7
Decision The minister addresses the parents and godparents In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore I ask: Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God? I reject them. Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil? I renounce them. Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour? I repent of them. Do you turn to Christ as Saviour? I turn to Christ. Do you submit to Christ as Lord? I submit to Christ. Do you come to Christ, the way, the truth and the life? I come to Christ. The minister marks each candidate with the sign of the cross, in oil Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of his cross. Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified. Fight valiantly as a disciple of Christ against sin, the world and the devil, and remain faithful to Christ to the end of your life. May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, restore in you the image of his glory, and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ. Amen.
Prayer over the water Praise God who made heaven and earth, who keeps his promise for ever. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. Almighty God, whose son Jesus Christ was baptised in the river Jordan: we thank you for the gift of water to cleanse and revive us. 8
We thank you that through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people out of slavery to freedom in the promised land. We thank you that through the deep waters of death you brought your Son, and raised him to life in triumph. Bless this water, that your servants who are washed in it may be made one with Christ in his death and in his resurrection, to be cleansed and delivered from all sin. Send your Holy Spirit upon Jazmin and Yahya. Bring them to new birth in the household of faith, and raise them with Christ to full and eternal life; for all might, Majesty, authority, and power are yours, now and forever. Amen.
Profession of Faith My sisters and brothers, I ask you to profess, together with these candidates, the faith of the Church. Do you believe and trust in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
9
Baptism N, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. May God, who has received you by baptism into his Church, pour upon you the riches of his grace, that within the company of Christ’s pilgrim people you may be renewed daily by his anointing Spirit, and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory. Amen. The parents and godparents return to their places We sit or kneel
Prayers of Intercession
led by Chris Coupland
In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or another, response is used Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer. At the end Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
Welcome of the baptised There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism: Jazmin and Yahya, by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body. We welcome you into the fellowship of faith; we are children of the same heavenly Father; we welcome you. We stand
Giving and Receiving Peace We are all one in Christ Jesus. We belong to him through faith, Heirs of the promise of the Spirit of peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. 10
We offer one another a sign of God’s peace
Hymn During this hymn a collection is taken. The gifts of the people are presented, and the Table is set with bread and wine. Love is his word, love is his way, feasting with all, fasting alone, living and dying, rising again; love, only love, is his way. Richer than gold is the love of my Lord, better than splendour and wealth. Love is his way, love is his mark, sharing his last Passover feast, Christ at the table, host to the twelve; love, only love, is his mark. Love is his mark, love is his sign, bread for our strength, wine for our joy, ‘This is my body, this is my blood.’ Love, only love, is his sign. Love is his sign, love is his news, ‘Do this,’ he said, ‘lest you forget all my deep sorrow, all my dear blood.’ Love, only love, is his news. Love is his news, love is his name, we are his own, chosen and called, sisters and brothers, parents and kin. Love, only love, is his name. Love is his name, love is his law, hear his command, all who are his: ‘Love one another; I have loved you.’ Love, only love, is his law. Love is his law, love is his word, love of the Lord, Father and Word, love of the Spirit, God ever one; love, only love, is his word. Words: Luke Connaughton (1917-1979) Tune: CRESSWELL; Anthony Milner (1925-2002); SP 219

Prayer at the Preparation of the Table Blessed be God, by whose grace creation is renewed, by whose love heaven is opened, by whose mercy we offer our sacrifice of praise. Blessed be God for ever.
Great Thanksgiving Prayer
Prayer F
You are worthy of our thanks and praise, Lord God of truth, for by the breath of your mouth you have spoken your word, and all things have come into being. You fashioned us in your image and placed us in the garden of your delight. Though we chose the path of rebellion you would not abandon your own. Again and again you drew us into your covenant of grace. You gave your people the law and taught us by your prophets to look for your reign of justice, mercy and peace. As we watch for the signs of your kingdom on earth, we echo the song of the angels in heaven, evermore praising you and singing: Choir
Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Amen. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Amen.
12
Lord God, you are the most holy one, enthroned in splendour and light, yet in the coming of your Son Jesus Christ you reveal the power of your love made perfect in our human weakness. Embracing our humanity, Jesus showed us the way of salvation; loving us to the end, he gave himself to death for us; dying for his own, he set us free from the bonds of sin, that we might rise and reign with him in glory. On the night he gave up himself for us all he took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the death that he suffered on the cross, we celebrate his resurrection, his bursting from the tomb, we rejoice that he reigns at your right hand on high and we long for his coming in glory. As we recall the one, perfect sacrifice of our redemption, Father, by your Holy Spirit let these gifts of your creation be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; form us into the likeness of Christ and make us a perfect offering in your sight. Look with favour on your people and in your mercy hear the cry of our hearts. Bless the earth, heal the sick, let the oppressed go free and fill your Church with power from on high.
13
Gather your people from the ends of the earth to feast with all your saints at the table in your kingdom, where the new creation is brought to perfection in Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. We sit or kneel Silence
The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
14
Giving of Communion Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. As the ministers receive communion the choir sings O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace. Stewards will direct you to the communion rail. Please indicate if you would like a glutenfree wafer or non-alcoholic wine.

Hymn Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee; take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise. Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of thy love; take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for thee. Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King; take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from thee.
15
Take my silver and my gold; not a mite would I withhold; take my intellect, and use every power as thou shalt choose. Take my will, and make it thine: it shall be no longer mine; take my heart: it is thine own; it shall be thy royal throne. Take my love; my Lord, I pour at thy feet its treasure-store; take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for thee. Words: Frances Ridley Havergal (1836-1879) Tune: NOTTINGHAM; Wenzel MĂźller (1747-1835); CP 581

Prayers after Communion Merciful Father, who gave Jesus Christ to be for us the bread of life, that those who come to him should never hunger: draw us to the Lord in faith and love, that we may eat and drink with him at his table in the kingdom, where he is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen. Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. We stand
Hymn Fill thou my life, O Lord my God, in every part with praise, that my whole being may proclaim thy being and thy ways. Not for the lips of praise alone, nor e’en the praising heart I ask, but for a life made up of praise in every part:
Praise in the common things of life, its goings out and in; praise in each duty and each deed, however small and mean. Fill every part of me with praise: let all my being speak of thee and of thy love, O Lord, poor though I be and weak. So shalt thou, Lord, receive from me the praise and glory due; and so shall I begin on earth the song for ever new. So shall each fear, each fret, each care, be turned into song; and every winding of the way the echo shall prolong. So shall no part of day or night unblest or common be, but all my life, in every step, be fellowship with thee. Words: Horatius Bonar (1808-1889) Tune: RICHMOND; Thomas Haweis (1734-1820); CP 424
The Dismissal The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. A candle is lit from the Easter candle and given to the two candidates God has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and has given us a place with the saints in light. You have received the light of Christ; walk in this light all the days of your life. Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen.
