The Eucharist Trinity Sunday
07 June 2020 10.15
Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission One of three Cathedrals in the Anglican Diocese of Leeds
Our purpose is to serve Jesus Christ as a vibrant community of worship and mission enriching the City, the Diocese and further afield.
❖ Please join in at home, by saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service. ❖ This is a service of Holy Communion. The term ‘Spiritual Communion’ has been used historically to describe the means of grace by which a person, prevented for some serious reason from sharing in a celebration of the Eucharist, nonetheless shares in the communion of Jesus Christ. The Church of which we are members is not defined by the walls of a building but by the Body of Christ of which we are members. In making our communion spiritually, we are joining with Christians everywhere to be nourished by the one who tells us, ‘I am the Bread of Life’. ❖ You may wish to use the following prayer, after Richard of Chichester: Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. ❖ Members of the Music Department lead this morning’s worship. The choral settings are John Rutter’s Communion Service – Series 3 and Alex Berry’s Missa sub clavis

Voluntary: Prelude in C, BWV 545 by J.S. Bach. Played by Graham Thorpe.
Welcome and Notices The Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Canon Precentor
Hymn Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! early in the morning our song shall rise to thee; holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessèd Trinity! Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert and art and evermore shalt be. Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide thee, though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see, only thou art holy, there is none beside thee perfect in power, in love, and purity. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! all thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea; holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessèd Trinity! Words: Reginald Heber (1783-1826) Tune: NICAEA; CP 202
Greeting The Lord is with us. Let us praise his name together.
Spoken praise Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength; ascribe to the Lord the honour due to his name. The whole earth is full of his glory. The Lord shall give strength to his people; the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. 3

Three Persons praise we evermore, one only God our hearts adore; in thy sweet mercy ever kind may we our sure protection find. O Trinity! O Unity! be present as we worship thee; and with the songs that angels sing unite the hymns of praise we bring. Amen. Words: tr. John Chambers (1805-1893) Tune: MONT RICHARD; EH 633

Gospel Reading
Read by the Very Reverend Jerry Lepine
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord Matthew 28.16-20 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. 18And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’ 6
This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Silence
Sermon The Right Reverend Mark Sowerby, Principal of the College of the Resurrection Voluntary: Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier, Op. 28 no. 52 by M. DuprĂŠ. Played by graham Thorpe.
Credal Hymn I believe in God the Father who created heaven and earth; holding all things in his power, bringing light and life to birth. I believe in God the Saviour, Son of Man and Lord most high, crucified to be redeemer, raised to life that death might die. I believe in God the Spirit, wind of heaven and flame of fire, pledge of all that we inherit, sent to comfort and inspire. Honour, glory, might and merit be to God, and God alone! Father, Son and Holy Spirit, One-in-Three and Three-in-One. Words: Michael Perry (1942-1996) Tune: DIM OND IESU; arr. Roger Mayer
Prayers of Penitence We have too often exchanged the worship of the living God for idols of our own imagining. As we gather to offer our praises to the holy and undivided Trinity, and to worship God in spirit and in truth, let us call to mind our sins. Silence We have not always worshipped God, our creator. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. 7
We have not always followed Christ, our Saviour. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy We have not always trusted in the Spirit, our guide. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy God, the Father of mercies, has reconciled the world to himself through the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus Christ, not counting our trespasses against us, but sending his Holy Spirit to shed abroad his love among us. By the ministry of reconciliation entrusted by Christ to his Church, receive his pardon and peace to stand before him in his strength alone, this day and evermore. Amen.
Prayers of Intercession Led by Canon Mandy Coutts We come boldly to the throne of grace . . . . . . mercy and grace. We plead before your throne in heaven. . . . as we worship you saying. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Amen.
Giving and Receiving Peace Peace to you from God our heavenly Father. Peace from his Son Jesus Christ who is our peace. Peace from the Holy Spirit, the life-giver. The peace of the triune God be always with you and also with you. The Table is set with bread and wine Our offerings are received: www.bradfordcathedral.org Voluntary: Vater unser im Himmelreich, by G. Bรถhm. Played by Graham Thorpe. 8
Great Thanksgiving Prayer
Additional Prayer One with extended preface for Trinity
The Lord is here. God’s Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. It is always right to give you thanks, God our Creator, loving and faithful, holy and strong. You made us and the whole universe, and filled your world with life. You sent your Son to live among us, Jesus our Saviour, Mary’s child. He suffered on the cross; he died to save us from our sins; he rose in glory from the dead. You send your Spirit to bring new life to the world, and clothe us with power from on high. And so we join the angels to celebrate and sing:
9
On the night before he died, Jesus shared a meal with his friends. He took the bread, and thanked you. He broke it, and gave it to them, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this to remember me. After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine. He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you. This is my blood, the new promise of God’s unfailing love. Do this to remember me. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. As we bring this bread and wine, and remember his death and resurrection, send your Holy Spirit, that we who share these gifts may be fed by Christ’s body and his blood. Pour your Spirit on us that we may love one another, work for the healing of the earth, and share the good news of Jesus, as we wait for his coming in glory. For honour and praise belong to you, with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit: one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 10

The Lord’s Prayer
with a friend of Pratima’s in Urdu
Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion Alleluia. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. The president receives the consecrated bread and wine

If you would like to make an Act of Spiritual Communion, you may wish to use the following prayer, after Richard of Chichester: Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.
Prayers after Communion Almighty and eternal God, you have revealed yourself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and live and reign in the perfect unity of love: hold us firm in this faith, that we may know you in all your ways and evermore rejoice in your eternal glory, who are three Persons yet one God, now and for ever. Amen. 12
Hymn Thou, whose almighty word chaos and darkness heard, and took their flight; hear us, we humbly pray, and where the gospel-day sheds not its glorious ray, let there be light. Thou, who didst come to bring on thy redeeming wing healing and sight, health to the sick in mind, sight to the inly blind, O now to all mankind let there be light. Spirit of truth and love, life-giving, holy Dove, speed forth thy flight; move o’er the water’s face, bearing the lamp of grace, and in earth’s darkest place, let there be light. Holy and blessèd Three, glorious Trinity, Wisdom, Love, Might; boundless as ocean’s tide rolling in fullest pride, through the earth far and wide let there be light. Words: John Marriot (1780-1825) Tune: MOSCOW; CP 267
Dismissal God the Holy Trinity make you strong in faith and love, defend you on every side, and guide you in truth and peace; and the blessing of God almighty the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Filled with the Spirit’s power, go in the light and peace of Christ. Alleluia, alleluia. Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia. 13
