The Eucharist All Saints’ Day
1st November 2020 10.30
Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission One of three Cathedrals in the Anglican Diocese of Leeds
Our purpose is serving Christ and transforming lives through welcome, worship and encounter.
❖ Please join in at home, and in the Cathedral, by saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service ❖ For those at home, unable to receive Holy Communion: The term ‘Spiritual Communion’ has been used historically to describe the means of grace by which a person, prevented for some serious reason from sharing in a celebration of the Eucharist, nonetheless shares in the communion of Jesus Christ. The Church of which we are members is not defined by the walls of a building but by the Body of Christ of which we are members. In making our communion spiritually, we are joining with Christians everywhere to be nourished by the one who tells us, ‘I am the Bread of Life’. ❖ Please note that this service will be broadcast live on YouTube and be available for the following week. ❖ Bradford Cathedral Choir members lead this morning’s worship. The choral setting is C.V. Stanford’s Communion Service in B♭. ❖ The flowers today have been given by Jan Warriner, in loving memory of her parents.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you and also with you. Rejoice, people of God, praise the Lord! Let us keep the feast in honour of all God’s saints, in whose victory the angels rejoice and glorify the Son of God.
Hymn For all the Saints who from their labours rest, who thee by faith before the world confest, thy name, O Jesu, be for ever blest. Alleluia. Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress, and their Might; thou, Lord, their Captain in the well-fought fight; thou in the darkness drear their one true Light. Alleluia. O may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, fight as the Saints who nobly fought of old, and win, with them, the victor’s crown of gold. Alleluia. O blest communion! fellowship divine! we feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia. The golden evening brightens in the west; soon, soon to faithful warriors cometh rest: sweet is the calm of Paradise the blest. Alleluia. 3
But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day; the Saints triumphant rise in bright array: the King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia. From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, singing to Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Alleluia. Words: W. Walsham How (1823-1897) Tune: SINE NOMINE; CP 323

Prayers of Penitence Since we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, looking to Jesus in penitence and faith. Hebrews 12.1 Silence Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you, through our own fault, in thought, and word, and deed, and in what we have left undone. We are heartily sorry, and repent of all our sins. For your Son our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Prayer of the day Let us pray that we may be strengthened by our communion With all the saints. New Testament Reading
1 John 3.1-3
read by Bori Benko
See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. 3And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence We stand
Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, called out of darkness into his marvellous light.
1 Peter 2.9
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel Reading
Matthew 5.1-12
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: 3
‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4
‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5
‘Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
6
‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
7
‘Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
8
‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

‘Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11
‘Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After an opening prayer, we sit
Sermon The Right Reverend Jonathan Gibbs, Bishop of Huddersfield Voluntary: Improvisation We stand
The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We sit

Great Thanksgiving Prayer The Lord is here. God’s Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. And now we give you thanks, most gracious God, surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses and glorified in the assembly of your Saints. The glorious company of apostles praise you. The Noble fellowship of prophets praise you. The white-robed army of martyrs praise you. We, your holy church, acclaim you. In communion with angels and archangels, and with all who served you on earth and worship you now in heaven, we raise our voice to proclaim your glory, forever praising you and singing: Quartet
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest. Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness. Grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, on the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper 5
he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Christ is the bread of life: When we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory. And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. We sit Silence

The Lord’s Prayer With saints and martyrs through the ages, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion The body of Christ given for you. Amen. The blood of Christ shed for you. Amen. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: grant us thy peace. Please stand in your place if you would like to receive the bread of Communion Please indicate if you’d like a gluten-free wafer

If you are at home and unable to receive Communion, you may wish to use the following prayer, after Richard of Chichester: Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.
Communion Motet Gaudent in caelis animae sanctorum, qui Christi vestigia sunt secuti, et qui a, pro ejus amore, sanguinem suum fuderunt, ideo cum Christo exsultant sine fine. The souls of the saints rejoice in heaven; they have followed the steps of Christ; for his love they shed their blood, therefore they exult with Christ forever. Words: Magnificat antiphon from second Vespers for several martyrs Music: T.L. da Victoria (1548-1611)
We remain seated Silence
Prayer after Communion Lord of heaven, in this eucharist you have brought us near to an innumerable company of angels and to the spirits of the saints made perfect: as in this food of our earthly pilgrimage we have shared their fellowship, so may we come to share their joy in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Silence

Hymn Thanks be to God for his saints of each past generation, one with us still in one body, one great congregation; with them proclaim Jesus for ever the same, Author of life and salvation. Thanks be to God for his blessings which daily surround us; glory to Christ, the Redeemer who sought us and found us, who from the grave rose, the almighty to save, breaking the fetters that bound us. Thanks be to God for the years that are yet in his keeping, trusting each day to the care of a Father unsleeping, on to the end, Christ our companion and friend, joy at the last for our weeping. Thanks be to God who has called us and daily defends us, who with the Son and the Spirit unchanging befriends us; now in that name, Jesus for ever the same, forth to his service he sends us. Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b.1926) Tune: LOBE DEN HERREN; SP117
Dismissal May Christ who makes saints of sinners, who has transformed those we remember today, raise and strengthen you that you may transform the world; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Following God’s saints in the ways of holiness and truth, go in the peace of Christ.. Thanks be to God. A closing voluntary is played The concluding organ voluntary is offered as part of our worship Please leave the building as quickly as possible and do not engage in conversation until outside 9
