The Eucharist Advent Sunday World Aids Day

29 November 2020 10.30

Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission One of three Cathedrals in the Anglican Diocese of Leeds

Our purpose is serving Christ and transforming lives through welcome, worship and encounter.

❖ Please join in at home, and in the Cathedral, by saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service ❖ For those at home, unable to receive Holy Communion: The term ‘Spiritual Communion’ has been used historically to describe the means of grace by which a person, prevented for some serious reason from sharing in a celebration of the Eucharist, nonetheless shares in the communion of Jesus Christ. The Church of which we are members is not defined by the walls of a building but by the Body of Christ of which we are members. In making our communion spiritually, we are joining with Christians everywhere to be nourished by the one who tells us, ‘I am the Bread of Life’. ❖ Please note that this service will be broadcast live on YouTube and be available for the following two weeks. ❖ Members of Bradford Cathedral Choir lead this morning’s worship. The choral setting is H. Darke’s Communion Service in E.

Voluntary: Aria from Bach’s Memento by C.M. Widor

The Welcome The Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Dean of Bradford We stand In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lonely exile here, until the Son of God appear: Rejoice! rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, thou Rod of Jesse, free thine own from Satan’s tyranny; from depths of hell thy people save, and give them victory o’er the grave: O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here; disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death’s dark shadows put to flight: O come, thou Key of David, come, and open wide our heavenly home; make safe the way that leads on high, and close the path to misery: O come, O come, thou Lord of Might, who to thy tribes on Sinai’s height, in ancient times didst give the law in cloud and majesty and awe: Words: Latin Advent Antiphons tr. J.M. Neale Tune: VENI EMMANUEL; CP 32

Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. Be not wroth very sore, O Lord, neither remember iniquity for ever: thy holy cities are a wilderness, Sion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation: our holy and beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee. Drop down… RORATE CAELI, Mode i

Prayer of the day Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and to put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility; that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We sit

Old Testament Reading

Isaiah 64.1-9

read by Kayleigh Lucas

O that you would tear open the heavens and come down, so that the mountains would quake at your presence— 2 as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil— to make your name known to your adversaries, so that the nations might tremble at your presence! 3 When you did awesome deeds that we did not expect, you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence. 4 From ages past no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who works for those who wait for him. 5 You meet those who gladly do right, those who remember you in your ways. But you were angry, and we sinned; because you hid yourself we transgressed. 6 We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy cloth. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. 7 There is no one who calls on your name, or attempts to take hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us, and have delivered us into the hand of our iniquity. 8 Yet, O LORD, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand. 9 Do not be exceedingly angry, O LORD, and do not remember iniquity for ever. Now consider, we are all your people. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 5

Gospel Reading

cf. Isaiah 40.3-5

Mark 13.24-end

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark Glory to you O Lord ‘But in those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, 25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 26 Then they will see “the Son of Man coming in clouds” with great power and glory. 27Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. 28

‘From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 30Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. 31Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. 32

‘But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come. 34It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. 6

35

Therefore, keep awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, 36or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. 37And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, O Christ After an opening prayer, we sit

Sermon The Right Reverend Paul Slater, Bishop of Kirkstall Silence Voluntary: Improvisation We stand

The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We sit

Great Thanksgiving Prayer

Additional Eucharistic Prayer One

The Lord be with you and also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God It is right to give thanks and praise. It is indeed right and good to give you thanks and praise, almighty God and everlasting Father, through Jesus Christ your Son. For when he humbled himself to come among us in human flesh, he fulfilled the plan you formed before the foundation of the world to open for us the way of salvation. Confident that your promise will be fulfilled, we now watch for the day when Christ our Lord will come again in glory. And so we join our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven to proclaim your glory for ever praising you and singing: 9

Quartet

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest. Father, on the night before he died, Jesus shared a meal with his friends. He took the bread, and thanked you. He broke it, and gave it to them, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this to remember me. After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine. He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you. This is my blood, the new promise of God’s unfailing love. Do this to remember me. Jesus Christ has died. Jesus Christ has died. Jesus Christ is risen. Jesus Christ is risen. Jesus Christ will come again. Jesus Christ will come again. Father, as we bring this bread and wine, and remember his death and resurrection, send your Holy Spirit, that we who share these gifts may be fed by Christ’s body and his blood. Pour your Spirit on us that we may love one another, work for the healing of the earth, and share the good news of Jesus, as we wait for his coming in glory. For honour and praise belong to you, Father, with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit: one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Looking for the coming of his kingdom, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name; your kingdom come; your will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Giving of Communion The body of Christ given for you. Amen. The blood of Christ shed for you. Amen. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: grant us thy peace.

If you are at home and unable to receive Communion, you may wish to use the following prayer, after Richard of Chichester: Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.

Prayer after Communion O Lord our God, make us watchful and keep us faithful as we await the coming of your Son our Lord; that, when he shall appear, he may not find us sleeping in sin but active in his service and joyful in his praise; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We stand Stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.

Hymn Lo, he comes with clouds descending, once for favoured sinners slain; thousand, thousand saints attending swell the triumph of his train: Alleluia! God appears on earth to reign. Every eye shall now behold him robed in dreadful majesty; those who set at naught and sold him, pierced and nailed him to the Tree, deeply wailing, shall the true Messiah see. 12

Luke 21.28

Those dear tokens of his passion still his dazzling body bears, cause of endless exultation to his ransomed worshippers: with what rapture gaze we on those glorious scars! Yea, Amen, let all adore thee, high on thine eternal throne; Saviour take the power and glory, claim the kingdom for thine own: Alleluia! Thou shalt reign, and thou alone. Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) & John Cennick (1718-1755) Tune: HELMSLEY; CP 31

Dismissal With love and compassion Come, Lord Jesus With judgement and mercy, Come, Lord Jesus In power and glory, Come, Lord Jesus In wisdom and truth, Come, Lord Jesus Christ, the Sun of Righteousness shine upon you, scatter the darkness from before your path, and make you ready to meet him when he comes in glory: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Our Lord says, ‘I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. May the Lord, when he comes, find us watching and waiting. Amen Voluntary: Grave and Adagio from Sonata 2, Op. 65 by F. Mendelssohn
