The Eucharist Christmas Day

25 December 2020 10.30

Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission One of three Cathedrals in the Anglican Diocese of Leeds

Our purpose is serving Christ and transforming lives through welcome, worship and encounter.

❖ Please join in at home, and in the cathedral, by saying the words in bold type in this order of service. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, members of the public in the cathedral may not sing. ❖ For those at home, unable to receive Holy Communion: The term ‘Spiritual Communion’ has been used historically to describe the means of grace by which a person, prevented for some serious reason from sharing in a celebration of the Eucharist, nonetheless shares in the communion of Jesus Christ. The Church of which we are members is not defined by the walls of a building but by the Body of Christ of which we are members. In making our communion spiritually, we are joining with Christians everywhere to be nourished by the one who tells us, ‘I am the Bread of Life’. ❖ Please note that this service will be broadcast live on YouTube and be available for the following two weeks.  The choral setting is J. Haydn’s Missa brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo (Little Organ Mass). The Cathedral Choir lead this morning’s worship.  If you use a hearing aid, please turn the setting to ‘T’ in order to take advantage of the induction loop in the cathedral.  Please check that you have switched off your mobile phone.  Lavatories, including disabled facilities, are available towards the rear of the building on the South Side.  In the event of an emergency, please remain calm and seated. Stewards will direct you out of the cathedral.  The Cathedral Close is an historic conservation area. The nature of the site means that many of the surfaces and steps are uneven and can be slippery when wet. Please take care when leaving the cathedral, use the handrails where provided and report anything that seems to be broken or amiss to a member of the cathedral staff.

Voluntary: The Holy Boy by J. Ireland (1879-1962)

Welcome The Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Dean of Bradford We stand Silence In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Carol Away in a manger no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing the baby awakes, but little Lord Jesus no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, and stay by my side until morning is nigh. Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay close by me forever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, and take us to heaven, to live with thee there Words: Little Children’s Book, Philadelphia, 1885 Tune: AWAY IN A MANGER; CP 45

New Testament Reading

Titus 2.11-14

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, 12training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are selfcontrolled, upright, and godly, 13while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ. 14He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence We stand

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Reading

Luke 2.1-20

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3All went to their own towns to be registered. 4Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. 5He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. 6While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. 7And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. 8

In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: 11to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord. 12This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.’ 13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, 14 ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favours!’ 15

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.’ 16So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. 17When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; 18and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. 19But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. 20The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After an opening prayer, we sit

Anthem In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago. Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain; heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign: in the bleak midwinter a stable-place sufficed the Lord God almighty, Jesus Christ. Enough for him whom cherubim worship night and day, a breastful of milk and a mangerful of hay; enough for him, whom angels fall down before, the ox and ass and camel which adore. What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb, if I were a Wise Man I would do my part, yet what I can I give him, give my heart. Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) Music: Harold Darke (1888-1976)

We stand

The Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

7

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. We sit

Prayers of Penitence Christ the light of the world has come to dispel the darkness of our hearts. In his light let us examine ourselves and confess our sins. Silence You were born for our salvation: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. You came as Saviour to bring wholeness and peace: Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. You come to bring light into the darkness of our lives: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. May almighty God, who sent his Son into the world to save sinners, bring you his pardon and peace, now and for ever. Amen.

8

Prayers of Intercession Let us pray to Jesus our Saviour. . . . Jesus, Saviour, Hear our prayer. Jesus, Saviour, child of Mary, you know us and love us, you share our lives and hear our prayer. Glory to you for ever. Amen. We stand

Giving and Receiving Peace Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to all in whom he delights. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. We offer one another an appropriate sign of God’s peace The Table is set with bread and wine Our offerings are received: www.bradfordcathedral.org Voluntary: Improvisation We stand

Great Thanksgiving Prayer The Lord is here. God’s Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty creator, ever-living God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who for love of our fallen race humbled himself, and was born of the Virgin Mary by the power of your Spirit, and lived as one of us. 9

In this mystery of the Word made flesh you have caused his light to shine in our hearts, to give knowledge of your glory in the face of Jesus Christ. In him we see our God made visible and so are caught up in the love of the God we cannot see. Therefore with all the angels of heaven we lift our voices to proclaim the glory of your name and sing our joyful hymn of praise: Choir

Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cĂŚli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Great is the mystery of faith. Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. 10

Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. We sit Silence

The Lord’s Prayer Rejoicing in the presence of God, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread We break the bread of life, and that life is the light of the world. God here among us, light in the midst of us, bring us to light and life.

11

O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.

Communion Carol Infant holy, infant lowly, for his bed a cattle stall; oxen lowing, little knowing Christ the Babe is Lord of all. Swift are winging angels singing, nowells ringing, tidings bringing, Christ the Babe is Lord of all. Flocks were sleeping, shepherds keeping vigil till the morning new; saw the glory, heard the story, tidings of a gospel true. Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow, Praises voicing, greet the morrow, Christ the babe was born for you! Words: tr. Edith M. Reed (1885-1933) Music: Polish; arr. D. Willcocks (1919-2015)
