The Eucharist

Lent 5

21 March 2021 10.30

Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission One of three Cathedrals in the Anglican Diocese of Leeds

Our purpose is serving Christ and transforming lives through welcome, worship and encounter.

❖ Please join in at home, and in the Cathedral, by saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service ❖ For those at home, unable to receive Holy Communion: The term ‘Spiritual Communion’ has been used historically to describe the means of grace by which a person, prevented for some serious reason from sharing in a celebration of the Eucharist, nonetheless shares in the communion of Jesus Christ. The Church of which we are members is not defined by the walls of a building but by the Body of Christ of which we are members. In making our communion spiritually, we are joining with Christians everywhere to be nourished by the one who tells us, ‘I am the Bread of Life’. ❖ Please note that this service will be broadcast live on YouTube and be available for the following two weeks. ❖ Members of Bradford Cathedral Choir lead this morning’s worship. The choral settings are the Kyrie from the plainsong Missa Orbis Factor, and the Sanctus and Agnus Dei from C. Monteverdi’s Messa a Quattro voci da cappella.

Voluntary: Herzlich tut mich verlangen, op. 122 by J. Brahms We stand

Welcome The Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Dean of Bradford Silence In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn We sing the praise of him who died, of him who died upon the cross; the sinner’s hope let men deride, for this we count the world but loss. Inscribed upon the cross we see in shining letters, ‘God is love’; he bears our sins upon the tree; he brings us mercy from above. The cross! It takes our guilt away: it holds the fainting spirit up; it cheers with hope the gloomy day, and sweetens every bitter cup. It makes the coward spirit brave, and nerves the feeble arm for fight; it takes its terror from the grave, and gilds the bed of death with light: The balm of life, the cure of woe, the measure and the pledge of love, the sinner’s refuge here below, the angels’ theme in heaven above. Words: Thomas Kelly (1769-1855); CP 125 Tune: BRESLAU; CP 255

The Greeting The Lord be with you and also with you.

Prayers of Penitence

Quartet

Hear us O Lord have mercy upon us: for we have sinned against thee. Innocent captive taken unresisting: falsely accused and for us sinners sentenced: save us we pray thee, Jesu, our Redeemer. Hear us O Lord have mercy upon us: for we have sinned against thee.

President

Christ himself carried up our sins in his body to the tree, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds we have been healed. 1 Peter 2.24

Let us confess our sins. O God, you know my foolishness and my sins are not hidden from you: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Let not the flood overwhelm me nor the depths swallow me up; let not the pit shut its mouth upon me: Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Hear me, O Lord, as your loving kindness is good; turn to me as your compassion is great: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Quartet

Kyrie Eleison, Christe Eleison Kyrie Eleison

Almighty God, who in Jesus Christ has given us a kingdom that cannot be destroyed, forgive you your sins, open your eyes to God's truth, strengthen you to do God's will and give you the joy of his kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the day The president introduces a period of silent prayer Most merciful God, who by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ delivered and saved the world: grant that by faith in him who suffered on the cross we may triumph in the power of his victory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen.

New Testament Reading

Hebrews 5.5-10

read by David Worsley

So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you’; 6 as he says also in another place, ‘You are a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchizedek.’ 7

In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; 9and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, 10having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 119 9 How shall young people cleanse their way ♦︎ to keep themselves according to your word? 10 With my whole heart have I sought you; ♦︎ O let me not go astray from your commandments. 11 Your words have I hidden within my heart, ♦︎ that I should not sin against you. 12 Blessed are you, O Lord; ♦︎ O teach me your statutes. 13 With my lips have I been telling ♦︎ of all the judgements of your mouth. 14 I have taken greater delight in the way of your testimonies ♦︎ than in all manner of riches. 15 I will meditate on your commandments ♦︎ and contemplate your ways. 16 My delight shall be in your statutes ♦︎ and I will not forget your word.

Gospel Reading

John 12.20-33

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. 21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus.’ 22Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour. 27

‘Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say - “Father, save me from this hour”? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. 28Father, glorify your name.’ Then a voice came from heaven, ‘I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.’ 29The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, ‘An angel has spoken to him.’ 30Jesus answered, ‘This voice has come for your sake, not for mine.

Now is the judgement of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. 32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’ 33He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After an opening prayer, we sit

Sermon The Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Canon Precentor Voluntary: Improvisation We stand

The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We stand

Offertory Motet Adoramus te, Christe, et benedicimus tibi. Quia per tuam sanctam crucem redemisti mundum. Domine, miserere nobis. Words: Antiphon for Good Friday Liturgy Music: O. de Lassus (1532-1594) 8

Great Thanksgiving Prayer The Lord is here God’s Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God It is right to give thanks and praise. It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise, holy Father, heavenly King, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. And now we give you thanks because, for our salvation, he was obedient even to death on the cross. The tree of shame was made the tree of glory; and where life was lost, there life has been restored. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Quartet

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cæli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

On the night before he died, Jesus shared a meal with his friends. He took the bread, and thanked you. He broke it, and gave it to them, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this to remember me. After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine. He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you. This is my blood, the new promise of God’s unfailing love. Do this to remember me. 9

Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. As we bring this bread and wine, and remember his death and resurrection, send your Holy Spirit, that we who share these gifts may be fed by Christ’s body and his blood. Pour your Spirit on us that we may love one another, work for the healing of the earth, and share the good news of Jesus, as we wait for his coming in glory. For honour and praise belong to you, with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit: one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Trusting in the compassion of God, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. 10

Giving of Communion The body of Christ given for you. Amen. The blood of Christ shed for you. Amen. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace.

If you are at home and unable to receive Communion, you may wish to use the following prayer, after Richard of Chichester: Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.

Prayer after Communion Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us that what we do for the least of our brothers and sisters we do also for you: give us the will to be the servant of others as you were the servant of all, and gave up your life and died for us, but are alive and reign, now and for ever. Amen.
