The Eucharist Easter 5
2 May 2021 10.30
Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission One of three Cathedrals in the Anglican Diocese of Leeds
Our purpose is to serve Jesus Christ as a vibrant community of worship and mission enriching the City, the Diocese and further afield.
❖ Please join in at home, and in the Cathedral, by saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service. Unfortunately, the congregation is not yet permitted to sing when inside the building. ❖ This is a service of Holy Communion. The term ‘Spiritual Communion’ has been used historically to describe the means of grace by which a person, prevented for some serious reason from sharing in a celebration of the Eucharist, nonetheless shares in the communion of Jesus Christ. The Church of which we are members is not defined by the walls of a building but by the Body of Christ of which we are members. In making our communion spiritually, we are joining with Christians everywhere to be nourished by the one who tells us, ‘I am the Bread of Life’. ❖ Please note that this service will be broadcast live on YouTube and be available for the following two weeks. ❖ Members of the Cathedral Choir lead this morning’s worship. The choral setting is Francis Jackson’s Communion Service in G. ❖ The flowers this week have been given by Yvonne Fearnley in loving memory of her husband Gordon.

10.22 Notices Voluntary: Prelude in C, BWV 547 by J.S. Bach
Welcome The Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Canon Precentor We stand Silence In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Hymn Alleluia! Alleluia! Hearts to heaven and voices raise; sing to God a hymn of gladness, sing to God a hymn of praise: he who on the cross a victim for the world’s salvation bled, Jesus Christ, the King of glory, now is risen from the dead. Christ is risen, Christ the first-fruits of the holy harvest field, which will all its full abundance at his second coming yield; then the golden ears of harvest will their heads before him wave, ripened by his glorious sunshine, from the furrows of the grave. Christ is risen, we are risen; shed upon us heavenly grace, rain, and dew, and gleams of glory from the brightness of thy face; that we, with our hearts in heaven, here on earth may fruitful be, and by angel-hands be gathered, and be ever, Lord, with thee.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Glory be to God on high; Alleluia to the Saviour, who has gained the victory; Alleluia to the Spirit, fount of love and sanctity; Alleluia! Alleluia! to the Triune Majesty. Words: Christopher Wordsworth (1807-1885) Tune: LUX EOI; CP 137
Greeting Alleluia. Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia. Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: he has given us new life and hope by raising Jesus from the dead. Loving God, we have come to worship you. Help us to pray to you in faith, to sing your praise with gratitude, and to listen to your word with eagerness; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria in excelsis Glory be to God on high and in earth peace, goodwill towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory. O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The president introduces a period of silent prayer
Prayer of the day Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ have overcome death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: grant that, as by your grace going before us you put into our minds good desires, so by your continual help we may bring them to good effect; through Jesus Christ our risen Lord. Amen.

New Testament Reading
Acts 8.26-40
read by Bori Benko
Then an angel of the Lord said to Philip, ‘Get up and go towards the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.’ (This is a wilderness road.) 27So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship 28and was returning home; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29Then the Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go over to this chariot and join it.’ 30So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, ‘Do you understand what you are reading?’ 31He replied, ‘How can I, unless someone guides me?’ And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. 32Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this: ‘Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth. 33 In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth.’ 34 The eunuch asked Philip, ‘About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?’ 35Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. 36As they were going along the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, ‘Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?’38He commanded the chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. 39When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. 40But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he was passing through the region, he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence

Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia. Jesus said, ‘All who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.’

Gospel Reading Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord John 15.1-8 ‘I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine-grower. 2He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. 3You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. 4Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. 5I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. 6Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ Silence

Sermon The Reverend Canon Myra Shackley Voluntary: Improvisation We stand
The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. cf 1 Corinthians 15.3-7

Prayers of Penitence Christ died to sin once for all, and now he lives to God. Let us renew our resolve to have done with all that is evil and confess our sins in penitence and faith. Silence Father eternal, giver of light and grace, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour, in what we have thought, in what we have said and done, through ignorance, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We have wounded your love and marred your image in us. We are sorry and ashamed, and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and lead us out from darkness to walk as children of light. Amen. May the God of all mercies cleanse you from your sins, and restore you in his image to the praise and glory of his name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We sit
Prayers of Intercession We pray to Jesus who is present with us to eternity. After each section this response may be used: Jesus, Lord of life, In your mercy, hear us. Jesus, the resurrection and the life, we give you thanks for all who have lived and believed in you … Raise us with them to eternal life. Jesus, Lord of life, in your mercy, hear us, accept our prayers, and be with us always. Amen. 9

Offertory Motet O Living Bread, who once didst die, and lay Thee down in rocky tomb: within my heart forever lie, and shed Thy brightness o’er its gloom. O precious Blood so freely shed, sweet pledge of pardon from above: speak to my heart so cold and dead, and wake it into Life and Love. O Sacred Food, O Cleansing Tide, fill all my soul with Love divine: O Thou who didst my life redeem: come to my heart and make me Thine. Amen. Music: P. Whitlock (1903-1946)

Great Thanksgiving Prayer The Lord is here. God’s Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. It is always right to give you thanks, God our Creator, loving and faithful, holy and strong. You made us and the whole universe, and filled your world with life. You sent your Son to live among us, Jesus our Saviour, Mary’s child. He suffered on the cross; he died to save us from our sins; he rose in glory from the dead. You send your Spirit to bring new life to the world, and clothe us with power from on high. And so we join the angels to celebrate and sing: Choir
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest. On the night before he died, Jesus shared a meal with his friends. He took the bread, and thanked you. He broke it, and gave it to them, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this to remember me. After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine. He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you. This is my blood, the new promise of God’s unfailing love. Do this to remember me. 11
Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. As we bring this bread and wine, and remember his death and resurrection, send your Holy Spirit, that we who share these gifts may be fed by Christ’s body and his blood. Pour your Spirit on us that we may love one another, work for the healing of the earth, and share the good news of Jesus, as we wait for his coming in glory. For honour and praise belong to you, with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit: one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Silence We sit
The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion The body of Christ given for you. Amen. The blood of Christ shed for you. Amen. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: grant us thy peace. Please stand in your place if you would like to receive the bread of Communion Please indicate if you’d like a gluten-free wafer If you would like to make an Act of Spiritual Communion, you may wish to use the following prayer, after Richard of Chichester: Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.
Prayer after Communion Eternal God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life: grant us to walk in his way, to rejoice in his truth, and to share his risen life; who is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen.

Hymn God, we praise you, God, we bless you! God, we name you sovereign Lord! Mighty King whom angels worship, Father, by your church adored: all creation shows your glory, heaven and earth draw near your throne, singing, ‘Holy, holy, holy, Lord of hosts, and God alone!’ True apostles, faithful prophets, saints who set their world ablaze, martyrs, once unknown, unheeded, join one growing song of praise, while your church on earth confesses one majestic Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, God, our hope eternally. Jesus Christ, the King of glory, everlasting Son of God, humble as your virgin mother, hard the lonely path you trod. By your cross is sin defeated, hell confronted face to face, heaven opened to believers, sinners justified by grace. Christ, at God’s right hand victorious, you will judge the world you made; Lord, in mercy help your servants for whose freedom you have paid. Raise us up from dust to glory, guard us from all sin today; King enthroned above all praises, save your people, God, we pray! Words: Christopher M. Idle (b.1938) Tune: REX GLORIAE; CP 450

Dismissal May Christ, who out of defeat brings new hope and a new future, fill you with his new life; and the blessing of God almighty the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. With the power that raised Jesus from the dead at work within you, go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Alleluia, alleluia. In the name of Christ. Alleluia, Alleluia. Voluntary: Fugue in C, BWV 547 by J.S. Bach The concluding organ voluntary is offered as part of our worship
