The Eucharist THE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT

20 March 2022 10.30

Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission One of three Cathedrals – Bradford, Ripon and Wakefield – in the Anglican Diocese of Leeds Our purpose is serving Christ and transforming lives through welcome, worship and encounter. ❖ A very warm welcome to Bradford Cathedral for this service, particularly if you are visiting or with us for the first time. We hope you will stay and enjoy refreshments with us after the service, which will be served at the West End of the Cathedral. ❖ Please join in with saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service, and sit or stand as directed if you are able. Large print copies are available from the stewards at the main door. ❖ As part of our work to keep you safe and healthy, we are keeping some windows and doors open to make sure the Cathedral is well ventilated, which may mean parts of the nave are cold. We advise you, where you can, to dress warmly when attending a service. ❖ Today’s Eucharist is sung by the Boys’ Choir and Lay Clerks of the Cathedral. The choral setting is the Communion Service in Bb and F by Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) ❖ If you need to, please sit down at any point in the service, even if the instruction is to stand. It is more important for you to be comfortable and safe. ❖ We will be pleased to help you if you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer. Please speak with one of the stewards at the main door before the start of the service. ❖ Please be aware that today’s service is being livestreamed to YouTube and will be available online for two weeks. If you do not want to appear on the livestream please speak to one of the stewards who will direct you to seats not covered by the cameras. ❖ Please check that you have switched off your mobile phone. ❖ Lavatories, including disabled facilities, are available towards the back of church. ❖ The hearing loop has now been replaced. If you use a hearing aid, please turn it to the T position. ❖ In the event of an emergency, please remain calm and seated. Stewards will direct you out of the Cathedral.

Voluntary

O Lamm Gottes, unschuldig – J. S. Bach BWV 618

Welcome The Reverend Canon Philip Gray, Acting Canon Precentor We stand. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn How sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer’s ear! It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds, and drives away his fear. It makes the wounded spirit whole, and calms the troubled breast; ’tis manna to the hungry soul, and to the weary rest. Dear name! the rock on which I build, my shield and hiding-place, my never-failing treasury filled with boundless stores of grace. Jesus! my Shepherd, Brother, Friend, my Prophet, Priest, and King, my Lord, my Life, my Way, my End, accept the praise I bring. Weak is the effort of my heart, and cold my warmest thought; but when I see thee as thou art, I’ll praise thee as I ought. Till then I would thy love proclaim with every fleeting breath; and may the music of thy name refresh my soul in death. John Newton (1725-1807) ST PETER, CP 467

The Greeting The Lord be with you and also with you. We remain standing.

Prayers of Penitence

Choir

Hear us, O Lord, have mercy upon us: for we have sinned against thee. Hear us, O Lord, have mercy upon us: for we have sinned against thee. God, we implore thee, in thy glory seated, bow down and hearken to thy children, pity and pardon all our grievous trespasses. Hear us, O Lord, have mercy upon us: for we have sinned against thee.

Silence Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we have rebelled against him. Let us then renounce our wilfulness and ask his mercy by confessing our sins in penitence and faith. We confess to you our selfishness and lack of love: Fill us with your spirit. Lord, have mercy. We confess to you our fear and failure in sharing our faith: Fill us with your spirit. Christ, have mercy. We confess to you our stubbornness and lack of trust: Fill us with your spirit. Lord, have mercy. Choir

Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Silence 4

Almighty God, who in Jesus Christ has given us a kingdom that cannot be destroyed, forgive you your sins, open your eyes to God’s truth, strengthen you to do God’s will and give you the joy of his kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Collect of the Day The president introduces a period of silent prayer. Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. We sit.

First Reading

Isaiah 55.1-9 read by John Nowell

The Lord says this: Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. 2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labour for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. 3 Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. 4 See, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. 5 See, you shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you, 5

because of the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you. 6 Seek the Lord while he may be found, call upon him while he is near; 7 let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. 8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence

Gospel Acclamation We stand.

Choir

Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory. Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory. The Lord is a great God, O that today you would listen to his voice. Harden not your hearts. Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory.

Gospel Reading

Luke 13.1-9

read by the Reverend Canon Professor Myra Shackley, Cathedral Chaplain

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. There were some present who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2He asked them, ‘Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? 3No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. 4Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them—do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did.’

Then he told this parable: ‘A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. 7So he said to the gardener, “See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?” 8He replied, “Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig round it and put manure on it. 9If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.”’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon

After an opening prayer, we sit. The Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Acting Dean A brief Organ Interlude. We stand.

The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We kneel or sit.

Prayers of Intercession

led by David Worsley

In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or another, response is used: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. 7

At the end: Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. We stand.

Giving and Receiving Peace Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us access to his grace. cf. Romans 5.1, 2 The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of peace, and offer our gifts to God. The Table is set with bread and wine.

Hymn Rock of ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee; let the water and the blood, from thy riven side which flowed, be of sin the double cure: cleanse me from its guilt and power. Not the labours of my hands can fulfil thy law’s demands; could my zeal no respite know, could my tears for ever flow, all for sin could not atone: thou must save, and thou alone. Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to thy cross I cling; naked, come to thee for dress; helpless, look to thee for grace; foul, I to the fountain fly; wash me, Saviour, or I die. While I draw this fleeting breath, when my eyelids close in death, when I soar through tracts unknown, see thee on thy judgement throne; Rock of ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee. A. M. Toplady (1740-1778) PETRA, CP 565 8

Prayer at the Preparation of the Table Risen Lord and Saviour, present among us with the wealth of your love. Cleanse us from sin and give us the faith to offer our praise and grow in your grace. Amen.

Great Thanksgiving Prayer

It is indeed right and good to give you thanks and praise, almighty God and everlasting Father, through Jesus Christ your Son. For in these forty days you lead us into the desert of repentance that through a pilgrimage of prayer and discipline we may grow in grace and learn to be your people once again. Through fasting, prayer and acts of service you bring us back to your generous heart. Through study of your holy word you open our eyes to your presence in the world and free our hands to welcome others into the radiant splendour of your love. As we prepare to celebrate the Easter feast with joyful hearts and minds we bless you for your mercy and join with saints and angels for ever praising you and singing:

Choir

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

All glory be to you, our heavenly Father, who, in your tender mercy, gave your only Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there by his one oblation of himself once offered a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world; he instituted, and in his holy gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again. Hear us, merciful Father, we humbly pray, and grant that, by the power of your Holy Spirit, we receiving these gifts of your creation, this bread and this wine, according to your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Christ is the bread of life: When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory. Therefore, Lord and heavenly Father, in remembrance of the precious death and passion, the mighty resurrection and glorious ascension of your dear Son Jesus Christ, we offer you through him this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Grant that by his merits and death, and through faith in his blood, we and all your Church may receive forgiveness of our sins and all other benefits of his passion. 10

Although we are unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer you any sacrifice, yet we pray that you will accept this the duty and service that we owe. Do not weigh our merits, but pardon our offences, and fill us all who share in this holy communion with your grace and heavenly blessing; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. We kneel or sit. Silence

The Lord’s Prayer Trusting in the compassion of God, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

11

Giving of Communion Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. As the ministers receive communion the choir sings Choir

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.

Please stand in your place if you would like to receive the bread of communion. Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer. When the communion administrant says The Body of Christ we respond Amen.

Communion Motet Ave verum Corpus natum de Maria Virgine vere passum immolatum in cruce pro homine. Cujus latus perforatum unda fluxit et sanguine. Esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine. Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary, who truly suffered upon the cross for mankind: from whose pierced side there came forth water and blood; give us now, and at the time of our death, yourself to be our food. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)

Prayer after Communion Merciful Lord, grant your people grace to withstand the temptations of the world, the flesh and the devil, and with pure hearts and minds to follow you, the only God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We stand

Hymn Guide me, O thou great Redeemer, pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but thou art mighty; hold me with thy powerful hand: Bread of heaven, feed me now and evermore. Open now the crystal fountain whence the healing stream doth flow; let the fiery cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through: strong deliverer, be thou still my strength and shield. When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside; death of deaths, and hell’s destruction, land me safe on Canaan’s side: songs of praises, I will ever give to thee. William Williams (1717-1791), tr. Peter and William Williams CWM RHONDDA, CP 455

The Dismissal Christ give you grace to grow in holiness, to deny yourselves, take up your cross, and follow him; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. Voluntary

Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor – Johann Sebastian Bach BWV 582

The concluding organ voluntary is offered as part of our worship.
