Erhalt’ uns, Herr, bei Deinem Wort – Flor Peeters Op. 8 No. 10
Welcome The Reverend Canon Mandy Coutts, Canon for Mission and Pastoral Development We stand. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Hymn Christ is our corner-stone, on him alone we build; with his true saints alone the courts of heaven are filled: on his great love our hopes we place of present grace and joys above. O then with hymns of praise these hallowed courts shall ring; our voices we will raise the Three in One to sing; and thus proclaim in joyful song, both loud and long, that glorious name. Here, gracious God, do thou for evermore draw nigh; accept each faithful vow, and mark each suppliant sigh; in copious shower on all who pray each holy day thy blessings pour. Here may we gain from heaven the grace which we implore; and may that grace, once given, be with us evermore, until that day when all the blest to endless rest are called away. Latin, before 9th C., tr. John Chandler (1806-1876) HAREWOOD, CP 395 3
The Greeting Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! We remain standing.
Prayers of Penitence Christ our Passover lamb has been sacrificed for us. Let us therefore rejoice by putting away all malice and evil and confessing our sins with a sincere and true heart. cf. 1 Corinthians 5.7-8
Silence
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour, in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past, and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria Choir
Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy, thou only art the Lord, thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Collect Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ have overcome death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: grant that, as by your grace going before us you put into our minds good desires, so by your continual help we may bring them to good effect; through Jesus Christ our risen Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. We sit.
First Reading
Acts 11.1-18
read by Nora Whitham
The apostles and the believers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also accepted the word of God. 2So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him, 3saying, ‘Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?’ 4Then Peter began to explain it to them, step by step, saying, 5‘I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. There was something like a large sheet coming down from heaven, being lowered by its four corners; and it came close to me. 6As I looked at it closely I saw four-footed animals, beasts of prey, reptiles, and birds of the air. 7I also heard a voice saying to me, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat.” 8But I replied, “By no means, Lord; for nothing profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth.” 9But a second time the voice answered from heaven, “What God has made clean, you must not call profane.” 10This happened three times; then everything was pulled up again to heaven. 11At that very moment three men, sent to me from Caesarea, arrived at the house where we were. 12The Spirit told me to go with them and not to make a distinction between them and us. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man’s house. 13He told us how he had 5
seen the angel standing in his house and saying, “Send to Joppa and bring Simon, who is called Peter; 14he will give you a message by which you and your entire household will be saved.” 15And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as it had upon us at the beginning. 16And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, “John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” 17If then God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could hinder God?’ 18When they heard this, they were silenced. And they praised God, saying, ‘Then God has given even to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life.’ This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence
Gospel Acclamation We stand.
Choir
Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia. Jesus said, ‘All who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.’ cf. John 6.40 Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel Reading
John 13.31-35 read by the Reverend Canon Rod Anderson
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. During the supper, when Judas had gone out, Jesus said, ‘Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. 32If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. 33Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, “Where I am going, you cannot come.” 34I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. 35By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 6
Sermon
After an opening prayer, we sit. The Reverend Canon Philip Gray, Acting Precentor A brief Organ Interlude. We stand.
The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We kneel or sit.
Prayers of Intercession
led by Chris Coupland
In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or another, response is used: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. At the end: Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
7
We stand.
Giving and Receiving Peace The risen Christ came and stood among his disciples and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ Then were they glad when they saw the Lord. Alleluia. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you.
cf. John 20.19-20
We offer one another a sign of peace, and offer our gifts to God. The Table is set with bread and wine.
Hymn All hail the power of Jesu’s name; let angels prostrate fall; bring forth the royal diadem to crown him Lord of all. Crown him, ye morning stars of light, who fixed this floating ball; now hail the Strength of Israel’s might, and crown him Lord of all. Crown him, ye martyrs of your God, who from his altar call; praise him whose way of pain ye trod, and crown him Lord of all. Ye seed of Israel’s chosen race, ye ransomed of the fall; hail him who saves you by his grace, and crown him Lord of all. Sinners, whose love can ne’er forget the wormwood and the gall; go spread your trophies at his feet, and crown him Lord of all. Let every tribe and every tongue to him their hearts enthral, lift high the universal song, and crown him Lord of all. Edward Perronet (1726-1792) et al. MILES LANE, CP 163

Prayer at the Preparation of the Table Lord of life, with unbounded joy we offer you our sacrifice of praise. As we are fed with the bread of heaven may we know your resurrection power; through Christ our risen Lord. Amen.
Great Thanksgiving Prayer
It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, almighty and eternal Father, and to celebrate with joyful hearts the memory of your wonderful works. For by the mystery of his passion Jesus Christ, your risen Son, has conquered the powers of death and hell and restored in men and women the image of your glory. He has placed them once more in paradise and opened to them the gate of life eternal. And so, in the joy of this Passover, earth and heaven resound with gladness, while angels and archangels and the powers of all creation sing for ever the hymn of your glory. Choir
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Amen. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Amen.

We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory. Jesus Christ is Lord: Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. You are the Saviour of the world. Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever. Amen.
10
We kneel or sit. Silence
The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion Alleluia. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. As the ministers receive communion the choir sings Choir
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.
Please stand in your place if you would like to receive the bread of communion. Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer. When the communion administrant says The Body of Christ we respond Amen.
Communion Motet I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love. Song of Solomon 2.3-4 Edward Bairstow (1874-1946)
11
Prayer after Communion Eternal God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life: grant us to walk in his way, to rejoice in his truth, and to share his risen life; who is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen. We stand.
Hymn Praise the Lord! Ye heavens, adore him; praise him, angels, in the height, sun and moon, rejoice before him, praise him, all ye stars and light. Praise the Lord! for he hath spoken; worlds his mighty voice obeyed: laws, which never shall be broken, for their guidance he hath made. Praise the Lord! for he is glorious; never shall his promise fail: God hath made his saints victorious; sin and death shall not prevail. Praise the God of our salvation; hosts on high, his power proclaim; heaven and earth and all creation, laud and magnify his name! Foundling Hospital Collection c. 1796 ABBOT’S LEIGH, CP 556 / 418
Blessing The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the eternal covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in his sight; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Alleluia, alleluia! In the name of Christ. Amen. Alleluia, alleluia! 12
