Hymn Hail the day that sees him rise, Alleluia, to his throne above the skies; Alleluia, Christ, the Lamb for sinners given, Alleluia, enters now the highest heaven. Alleluia! There for him high triumph waits; Alleluia, lift your heads, eternal gates. Alleluia! He hath conquered death and sin; Alleluia, take the King of Glory in. Alleluia! See, he lifts his hands above; Alleluia, see, he shews the prints of love; Alleluia, hark, his gracious lips bestow, Alleluia, blessings on his church below. Alleluia! Introduction Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, for forty days we have been celebrating with joyful hearts the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, his bursting from the tomb and his defeat of the power of sin and death. He appeared to his disciples many times and told them about the kingdom of God. Today we recall how he left this earth and returned to his Father, ascending into heaven to take his throne over all dominions and powers. Trusting in his reign over all creation, and submitting to his kingly yet loving rule, let us hear the story of his parting.
The Ascension Reading
Acts 1.4-11 read by Nora Whitham
4
While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. ‘This,’ he said, ‘is what you have heard from me; 5for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.’ 6
So when they had come together, they asked him, ‘Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?’7He replied, ‘It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’9When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 While he was going and they were gazing up towards heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. 11They said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up towards heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.’ Alleluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia. Seeing we have a great high priest who has passed through the heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us offer him the praise worthy of his name. We stand.

Gloria Choir
Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy, thou only art the Lord, thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Collect Let us pray that our risen and ascended Lord will lead us to eternal life. Grant, we pray, almighty God, that as we believe your only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into the heavens, so we in heart and mind may also ascend and with him continually dwell; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. We sit.
First Reading
Ephesians 1.15-end
15
read by Naomi Reiss
I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love towards all the saints, and for this reason 16I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. 17I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, 18so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, 19and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. 20God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. 22And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 5

Gospel Reading
cf. Matt. 28.19,20
Luke 24.44-53
read by the Reverend Canon Mandy Coutts, Canon for Mission and Pastoral Development
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Then he said to them, ‘These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you – that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled.’ 45Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, 46 and he said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, 47and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things. 49And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.’ 50
Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. 52And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; 53and they were continually in the temple blessing God. 51
This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.
Sermon
After an opening prayer, we sit. The Reverend Tim Thomas, Vicar of St John’s, Bowling, and Assistant Area Dean of Inner Bradford 6
Motet God is gone up with a merry noise, and the Lord with the sound of the trumpet. Thou art gone up on high, thou hast led captivity captive and received gifts for men. O sing praises unto our God. O sing praises unto our King. He hath led captivity captive and received gifts for men. Alleluya. God is gone up on high. Arthur Hutchings (1906-1989)
We stand.
The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We kneel or sit.
Prayers of Intercession
led by Jane Thompson
Let us join our prayers with those of our Saviour Christ, seeking the Father’s blessing and the gifts of the Spirit. Jesus Christ, great high priest, living for ever to intercede for us, pray for the Church, your broken body in the world. Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.
7
Jesus Christ, king of righteousness, enthroned at the right hand of the majesty on high, pray for the world, and make it subject to your gentle rule. Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us. Jesus Christ, Son of Man, drawing humanity into the life of God, pray for your brothers and sisters in need, distress or sorrow. Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us. Jesus Christ, pioneer of our salvation, bringing us to glory through your death and resurrection, surround with your saints and angels those who have died trusting your promises. Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us. Jesus Christ, Lord over all things, ascended far above the heavens and filling the universe, pray for us who receive the gifts you give us for work in your service. Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us. Jesus Christ, keep the Church in the unity of the Spirit and in the bond of peace, and bring the whole created order to worship at your feet; for you are alive and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. We stand.
Giving and Receiving Peace Jesus says: ‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. If you love me, rejoice because I am going to the Father.’ Alleluia. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you.
cf. John 14.27,28
We offer one another a sign of peace, and offer our gifts to God. The Table is set with bread and wine.

Hymn Ascended Christ, who gained the glory that we sing, anointed and ordained, our Prophet, Priest, and King: by many tongues the Church displays your power and praise in all her songs. No titles, thrones, or powers can ever rival yours; no passing mood of ours can turn aside your laws: you reign above each other name of worth or fame, the Lord of love! Now from the Father's side you make your people new; since for our sins you died our lives belong to you: from our distress you set us free for purity and holiness. You call us to belong within one body here; in weakness we are strong and all your gifts we share: in you alone we are complete and at your feet with joy bow down. All strength is in your hand, all power to you is given; all wisdom to command in earth and hell and heaven: beyond all words creation sings the King of kings and Lord of lords. Christopher Idle (b. 1938) DARWALL’S 148th, SP 84/247

Prayer at the Preparation of the Table Blessed be God, by whose grace creation is renewed, by whose love heaven is opened, by whose mercy we offer our sacrifice of praise. Blessed be God for ever.
Great Thanksgiving Prayer
It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. For he is our great high priest who has entered once for all into the heavenly sanctuary, evermore to pour upon your Church the grace and comfort of your Holy Spirit. He is the one who has gone before us, who calls us to be united in prayer as were his disciples in the upper room while they awaited his promised gift, the life-giving Spirit of Pentecost. Therefore all creation yearns with eager longing as angels and archangels sing the endless hymn of praise: Choir
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Amen. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
10
We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory. Jesus Christ is Lord: Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. You are the Saviour of the world. Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever. Amen.
11
We kneel or sit. Silence
The Lord’s Prayer Looking for the coming of his kingdom, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread Lord, we died with you on the cross. Now we are raised to new life. We were buried in your tomb. Now we share in your resurrection. Live in us, that we may live in you.
Giving of Communion I heard the voice of a great multitude crying, Alleluia. The Lord our God has entered into his kingdom. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. Alleluia. As the ministers receive communion the choir sings Choir
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.
Please stand in your place if you would like to receive the bread of communion. Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer. When the communion administrant says The Body of Christ we respond Amen.
12
Communion Motet O Rex gloriae Domine virtutum, qui triumphator hodie super omnes coelos ascendisti, ne derelinquas nos orphanos, sed mitte promissum Patris in nos, Spiritum veritatis. Alleluia! O King of glory, Lord of Hosts, who today ascended in triumph above all heavens, do not leave us as orphans: but send to us that promised by the Father, the Spirit of truth. Alleluia! Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-1594)
Prayer after Communion We thank you, Lord, that you have fed us in this sacrament, united us with Christ, and given us a foretaste of the heavenly banquet prepared for all peoples. Amen. We stand.
13
Hymn Rejoice! The Lord is King, your Lord and King adore; mortals, give thanks and sing, and triumph evermore: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; rejoice, again I say, rejoice. Jesus the Saviour reigns, the God of truth and love; when he had purged our stains, he took his seat above: Lift up your heart, … His kingdom cannot fail; he rules o’er earth and heaven; the keys of death and hell are to our Jesus given: Lift up your heart, … He sits at God’s right hand till all his foes submit, and bow to his command, and fall beneath his feet: Lift up your heart, … Rejoice in glorious hope; Jesus the judge shall come, and take his servants up to their eternal home: We soon shall hear the archangel’s voice; the trump of God shall sound: rejoice! Charles Wesley (1707-1788) GOPSAL, CP 563
Blessing & Dismissal God the Father, who has given to his Son the name above every name, strengthen you to proclaim Christ Jesus as Lord. Amen. God the Son, who is our great high priest passed into the heavens, plead for you at the right hand of the Father. Amen.
14
God the Holy Spirit, who pours out his abundant gifts upon the Church, make you faithful servants of Christ our King. Amen. And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Waiting expectantly for the promised Holy Spirit, go in the peace of Christ. Alleluia, alleluia. Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia. Voluntary
