Prelude in C – J. S. Bach BWV 547

Welcome The Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Acting Dean We stand. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn I danced in the morning when the world was begun, and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun, and I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth; at Bethlehem I had my birth. Dance, then, wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the Dance, said he, and I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be, and I’ll lead you all in the Dance, said he. I danced for the scribe and the pharisee, but they would not dance and they wouldn’t follow me. I danced for the fishermen, for James and John; they came with me and the Dance went on: Dance, then, wherever you may be … I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame; the holy people said it was a shame. They whipped and they stripped and they hung me on high, and they left me there on a cross to die: Dance, then, wherever you may be … I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black; it’s hard to dance with the devil on your back. They buried my body and they thought I’d gone, but I am the Dance and I still go on: Dance, then, wherever you may be….. They cut me down and I leapt up high; I am the life that’ll never, never die; I’ll live in you if you’ll live in me: I am the Lord of the Dance, said he: Dance, then, wherever you may be … Sydney Carter (1915-2004) LORD OF THE DANCE, CP 468 3

The Greeting Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! We remain standing.

Prayers of Penitence What God has prepared for those who love him, he has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything. Therefore, let us in penitence open our hearts to the Lord, who has prepared good things for those who love him. Silence Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour, in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past, and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria

Music: David Thorne

Collect O God the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: we beseech you, leave us not comfortless, but send your Holy Spirit to strengthen us and exalt us to the place where our Saviour Christ is gone before, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. We sit.

First Reading

Acts 16.16-34

read by Catherine Warr

One day, as we were going to the place of prayer, we met a slave-girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners a great deal of money by fortune-telling. 17 While she followed Paul and us, she would cry out, ‘These men are slaves of the Most High God, who proclaim to you a way of salvation.’ 18She kept doing this for many days. But Paul, very much annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, ‘I order you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.’ And it came out that very hour. 19

But when her owners saw that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the market-place before the authorities. 20 When they had brought them before the magistrates, they said, ‘These men are disturbing our city; they are Jews 21and are advocating customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to adopt or observe.’ 22The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates had them stripped of their clothing and ordered them to be beaten with rods. 23After they had given them a severe flogging, they threw them into prison and ordered the jailer to keep them securely. 24Following these instructions, he put them in the innermost cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. 25

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. 26Suddenly there was an earthquake, so violent that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were unfastened. 27When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, since he supposed that the prisoners had escaped. 28But Paul shouted in a loud voice, ‘Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.’ 29The jailer called for lights, and rushing in, he fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 30Then he brought them outside and said, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ 31They answered, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.’ 32They spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. 33At the same hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and his entire family were baptized without delay. 34He brought them up into the house and set food before them; and he and his entire household rejoiced that he had become a believer in God. 6

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence

Gospel Acclamation We stand.

Gospel Reading

John 17.20-26

read by the Reverend Canon Rod Anderson, Cathedral Chaplain

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus looked up to heaven and prayed: ‘Holy Father, I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, 21that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, 23I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24Father, I desire that those also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 ‘Righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you; and these know that you have sent me. 26I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon

After an opening prayer, we sit. The Reverend Canon Professor Myra Shackley A brief Organ Interlude. We stand.

The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We kneel or sit.

Prayers of Intercession

led by Una Barry

In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or another, response is used: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. At the end: Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

8

We stand.

Giving and Receiving Peace God has made us one in Christ. He has set his seal upon us and, as a pledge of what is to come, has given the Spirit to dwell in our hearts. Alleluia. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you.

cf 2 Corinthians 1.22

We offer one another a sign of peace, and offer our gifts to God. The Table is set with bread and wine.

Hymn Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne; hark, how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own! Awake, my soul, and sing of him who died for thee, and hail him as thy matchless King through all eternity. Crown him the Virgin’s Son, the God incarnate born, whose arm those crimson trophies won which now his brow adorn: Fruit of the mystic Rose, as of that Rose the Stem; the Root whence mercy ever flows, the Babe of Bethlehem. Crown him the Lord of love, behold his hands and side, those wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified: no angel in the sky can fully bear that sight, but downward bends his burning eye at mysteries so bright.

9

Crown him the Lord of peace, whose power a sceptre sways from pole to pole, that wars may cease, and all be prayer and praise: his reign shall know no end, and round his piercèd feet fair flowers of paradise extend their fragrance ever sweet. Crown him the Lord of years, the Potentate of time, creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime: all hail, Redeemer, hail! for thou has died for me; thy praise shall never, never fail throughout eternity. Matthew Bridges (1800-1894) DIEDEMATA, CP 166

Prayer at the Preparation of the Table Lord of all and source of our joy, receive our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Keep us in the love of Christ and bring us to the vision of his glory; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Great Thanksgiving Prayer

10

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. For he is our great high priest who has entered once for all into the heavenly sanctuary, evermore to pour upon your Church the grace and comfort of your Holy Spirit. He is the one who has gone before us, who calls us to be united in prayer as were his disciples in the upper room while they awaited his promised gift, the life-giving Spirit of Pentecost. Therefore all creation yearns with eager longing as angels and archangels sing the endless hymn of praise: Choir

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory.

11

Jesus Christ is Lord: Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. You are the Saviour of the world. Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever. Amen. We kneel or sit. Silence

The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

12

Giving of Communion Alleluia. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. As the ministers receive communion the choir sings Choir

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us peace.

Please stand in your place if you would like to receive the bread of communion. Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer. When the communion administrant says The Body of Christ we respond Amen.

Communion Motet Lord, give me faith to live from day to day, With tranquil heart to do my simple part, And, with my hand in Thine, just go Thy way! Lord, give me faith to trust, if not to know; With quiet mind in all things Thee to find, And, childlike, go where Thou wouldst have me go! Lord, give me faith to leave it all to Thee! The future is Thy gift; I would not lift The veil Thy love has hung twixt it and me. Kathleen Robson

Prayer after Communion Eternal God, giver of love and power, your Son Jesus Christ has sent us into all the world to preach the gospel of his kingdom: confirm us in this mission, and help us to live the good news we proclaim; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We stand.

13

Hymn The head that once was crowned with thorns is crowned with glory now: a royal diadem adorns the mighty Victor’s brow. The highest place that heaven affords is his, is his by right, the King of kings, and Lord of lords, and heaven’s eternal Light; The joy of all who dwell above, the joy of all below, to whom he manifests his love, and grants his name to know. To them the cross, with all its shame, with all its grace, is given: their name an everlasting name, their joy, the joy of heaven. They suffer with their Lord below, they reign with him above; their profit and their joy to know the mystery of his love. The Cross he bore is life and health, though shame and death to him; his people’s hope, his people’s wealth, their everlasting theme. Thomas Kelly (1769-1855) ST MAGNUS, CP 172

Blessing The Spirit of truth lead you into all truth, give you grace to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, and strengthen you to proclaim the word and works of God; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Alleluia, alleluia! In the name of Christ. Amen. Alleluia, alleluia!
