Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, BuxWV 184 - Dieterich Buxtehude 1637-1707

Welcome and Greeting The Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Acting Dean We stand. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you and also with you.

Hymn The King of love my Shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am his and he is mine for ever. Where streams of living water flow my ransomed soul he leadeth, and where the verdant pastures grow with food celestial feedeth. Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, but yet in love he sought me, and on his shoulder gently laid, and home, rejoicing, brought me. In death's dark vale I fear no ill with thee, dear Lord, beside me; thy rod and staff my comfort still, thy cross before to guide me. Thou spread'st a table in my sight; thy unction, grace bestoweth: and O what transport of delight from thy pure chalice floweth! And so through all the length of days thy goodness faileth never; Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise within thy house for ever. H. W Baker (1821-1877), Psalm 23 ST COLUMBA, CP 589 3

We remain standing.

Prayers of Penitence Jesus says, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.” So let us turn away from sin and turn to Christ, confessing our sins in penitence and faith. Silence Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We remain standing as the choir sings

Gloria in excelsis Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex caelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Iesu Christe, Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus Altissimus, Iesu Christe, cum Sancto Spiritu, in gloria Dei Patris. Amen.

Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy, thou only art the Lord, thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The president introduces a period of silent prayer.

Prayer of the day Eternal Father, whose Son Jesus Christ ascended to the throne of heaven that he might rule over all things as Lord and King: keep the Church in the unity of the Spirit and in the bond of peace, and bring the whole created order to worship at his feet; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. We sit.

First Reading

Revelation 1: 4-8 read by Canon John Nowell

John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, 6and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. 7 Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. 8 ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega’, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence We remain standing. 5

Gospel Reading

Luke 19.38

John 18:33-37 read by the Revd Canon Mandy Coutts, Canon for Mission &

Pastoral Development

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, ‘Are you the King of the Jews?’ 34Jesus answered, ‘Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?’ 35Pilate replied, ‘I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?’ 36Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.’ 37Pilate asked him, ‘So you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon

After an opening prayer, we sit. The Reverend Canon Andrew Norman, Director of Ministry and Mission, Diocese of Leeds Silence We stand.

The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession

Led by Una Barry

Let us with confidence present our prayers and supplications to the throne of grace. After each section this, or another, response is used Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer. At the end Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. We stand.

Giving and Receiving Peace To crown all things there must be love, to bind all together and complete the whole. Let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts. cf. Colossians 3:14,15

The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of peace, and offer our gifts to God. The Table is set with bread and wine.

Hymn Rejoice! The Lord is King, your Lord and King adore; mortals, give thanks and sing, and triumph evermore: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; rejoice, again I say, rejoice. Jesus the Saviour reigns, the God of truth and love; when he had purged our stains, he took his seat above: His kingdom cannot fail; he rules o’er earth and heaven; the keys of death and hell are to our Jesus given: He sits at God’s right hand till all his foes submit, and bow to his command, and fall beneath his feet: Rejoice in glorious hope; Jesus the judge shall come, and take his servants up to their eternal home: We soon shall hear the archangel’s voice; the trump of God shall sound: rejoice! Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Tune: GOPSAL; CP 563 8

Great Thanksgiving Prayer

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For with the oil of gladness you have anointed Christ the Lord, your only Son, to be our great high priest and king of all creation. As priest, he offered himself once for all upon the altar of the cross and redeemed the human race by this perfect sacrifice of peace. As king he claims dominion over all your creatures, that he may bring before your infinite majesty a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love and peace. And so with angels and archangels and all the heavenly host, we proclaim your glory and join their unending hymn of praise: Choir Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cæli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O God Most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, 9

these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup, and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. We kneel or sit. 10

Silence

The Lord’s Prayer Uniting our prayers with the whole company of heaven, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Giving of Communion Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. As the ministers receive communion the choir sings Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.

Please stand in your place if you would like to receive the bread of communion. Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer. When the communion administrant says The body of Christ we respond Amen.

If you are at home and unable to receive communion, you may wish to use this prayer, after Richard of Chichester: Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.

Communion Motet Let all the world in every corner sing, My God and King. The heavens are not too high, His praise my thither fly: The earth is not too low, His praises there may grow. Let all the world in every corner sing, My God and King. The Church with psalms must shout, no door can keep them out: But above all, the heart must bear the longest part. Let all the world in every corner sing, My God and King. Words: George Herbert (1593-1633) Music: R. W Williams (1872-1958)

Silence

Prayer after Communion Stir up, O Lord, the wills of your faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may by you be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We stand.

Hymn The head that once was crowned with thorns is crowned with glory now; a royal diadem adorns the mighty Victor's brow. The highest place that heaven affords is his, is his by right, the King of kings, and Lord of lords, and heaven's eternal Light; The joy all of all who dwell above, the joy of all below, to whom he manifests his love and grants his name to know. To them the cross with all its shame, with all its grace is given; their name, an everlasting name; their joy, the joy of heaven. They suffer with their Lord below, they reign with him above, their profit and their joy to know the mystery of his love. The cross he bore is life and health, though shame and death to him: his people's hope, his people's wealth, their everlasting theme. Thomas Kelly (1769-1855) ST MAGNUS, CP 172
