The Eucharist
THE THIRD SUNDAY OF EPIPHANY During the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
23 January 2022 10.30
Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission One of three Cathedrals in the Anglican Diocese of Leeds Our purpose is serving Christ and transforming lives through welcome, worship and encounter. A very warm welcome to Bradford Cathedral for this service, particularly if you are visiting or with us for the first time. We hope you will stay and enjoy refreshments with us after the service, which will be served at the West End of the Cathedral. Please join in with saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service, and sit or stand as directed if you are able. Large print copies are available from the stewards at the main door. As part of our work to keep you safe and healthy, we are keeping some windows and doors open to make sure the Cathedral is well ventilated, which may mean parts of the nave are cold. We advise you, where you can, to dress warmly when attending a service. Today’s Eucharist is sung by the Girls’ Choir and Lay Clerks of the Cathedral. The choral setting is the Missa brevis by Giovanni Gabrieli (1557-1612). If you need to, please sit down at any point in the service, even if the instruction is to stand. It is more important for you to be comfortable and safe. We will be pleased to help you if you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer. Please speak with one of the stewards at the main door before the start of the service. Please check that you have switched off your mobile phone. Lavatories, including disabled facilities, are available towards the back of church. The hearing loop has now been replaced. If you use a hearing aid, please turn it to the T position. In the event of an emergency, please remain calm and seated. Stewards will direct you out of the Cathedral.

Welcome and Greeting The Reverend Canon Philip Gray, Acting Canon Precentor We stand. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you and also with you.
Hymn The church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord; she is his new creation by water and the word: from heaven he came and sought her to be his holy Bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died. Elect from every nation, yet one o’er all the earth, her charter of salvation one Lord, one faith, one birth; one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with every grace endued. ’Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace for evermore; till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest.
3
Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won: O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee. S. J. Stone (1839-1900) AURELIA, CP 585
We remain standing.
Prayers of Penitence The grace of God has dawned upon the world through our Saviour Jesus Christ, who sacrificed himself for us to purify a people as his own. Let us confess our sins. cf Titus 2.11-14
Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We remain standing as the choir sings

Gloria Choir Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex caelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Iesu Christe, Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus Altissimus, Iesu Christe, cum Sancto Spiritu, in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy, thou only art the Lord, thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
The president introduces a period of silent prayer.
Collect of the Day Almighty God, whose Son revealed in signs and miracles the wonder of your saving presence: renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weakness sustain us by your mighty power; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. We sit.
First Reading
1 Corinthians 12:12-31a read by Nora Whitham
Just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
5
14
Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15If the foot were to say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body’, that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16And if the ear were to say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body’, that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many members, yet one body. 21The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you’, nor again the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you.’ 22On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23and those members of the body that we think less honourable we clothe with greater honour, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; 24whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honour to the inferior member, 25that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. 26If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honoured, all rejoice together with it. 27
Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. 29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But strive for the greater gifts. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence

Gospel Reading
Luke 4:14-21 read by the Reverend Rod Anderson, Cathedral Chaplain
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. 15He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. 16
When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: 18
‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’ 20
And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21Then he began to say to them, ‘Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.
Sermon
After an opening prayer, we sit. The Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Acting Dean A brief Organ Interlude follows. We stand.
The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, 7
he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We kneel or sit.
Prayers of Intercession
led by Maurice Manktelow
In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or another, response is used: Lord in your mercy hear our prayer. At the end: Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. We stand.
Giving and Receiving Peace Our Saviour Christ is the Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of peace, and offer our gifts to God. The Table is set with bread and wine.
8
Hymn O thou, who at thy Eucharist didst pray that all thy church might be for ever one, grant us at every Eucharist to say with longing heart and soul, ‘Thy will be done’: O may we all one bread, one body be, through this blest sacrament of unity. For all thy church, O Lord, we intercede; make thou our sad divisions soon to cease; draw us the nearer each to each, we plead, by drawing all to thee, O Prince of Peace: thus may we all one bread, one body be, through this blest sacrament of unity. We pray thee too for wanderers from thy fold; O bring them back, good Shepherd of the sheep, back to the faith which saints believed of old, back to the church which still that faith doth keep: soon may we all one bread, one body be, through this blest sacrament of unity. So, Lord, at length when sacraments shall cease, may we be one with all thy church above, one with thy saints in one unbroken peace, one with thy saints in one unbounded love: more blessèd still, in peace and love to be one with the Trinity in Unity. William Turton (1856-1938) SONG 1, CP 318
Prayer at the Preparation of the Table Father, in Christ there has sprung up a light for the righteous; accept the gifts we bring before you and grant that Christ may shine in us to the praise and glory of your name. Amen.

Great Thanksgiving Prayer
All honour and praise be yours always and everywhere, mighty creator, ever-living God, through Jesus Christ your only Son our Lord: for at this time we celebrate your glory made present in our midst. In the coming of the magi the King of all the world was revealed to the nations. In the waters of baptism Jesus was revealed as the Christ, the Saviour sent to redeem us. In the water made wine the new creation was revealed at the wedding feast. Poverty was turned to riches, sorrow into joy. Therefore with all the angels of heaven we lift our voices to proclaim the glory of your name and sing our joyful hymn of praise: Choir Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cæli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood;
10
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of your kingdom, and with this bread and this cup we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen. We kneel or sit. Silence 11
The Lord’s Prayer Believing the promises of God, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. As the ministers receive communion the choir sings Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: dona nobis pacem. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.
Please stand in your place if you would like to receive the bread of communion. Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer. When the communion administrant says The Body of Christ we respond Amen.
12
If you are at home and unable to receive communion, you may wish to use this prayer, after Richard of Chichester: Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.
Communion Motet Sacerdotes Domini incensum et panes offerunt Deo: et ideo sancti erunt Deo suo et non polluent nomen eius. Alleluia. Then did priests make offering of incense and loaves of finest wheat to God: and therefore shall they be holy to their Lord and shall not defile his most holy name. Alleluia. William Byrd (1543-1623)
Prayer after Communion Almighty Father, whose Son our Saviour Jesus Christ is the light of the world: may your people, illumined by your word and sacraments, shine with the radiance of his glory, that he may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; for he is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen. We stand.
Hymn Thy hand, O God, has guided thy flock, from age to age; their wondrous tale is written, full clear, on every page; our fathers owned thy goodness, and we their deeds record; and both of this bear witness: one church, one faith, one Lord.
13
Thy heralds brought glad tidings to greatest, as to least; they bade men rise, and hasten to share the great King’s feast; and this was all their teaching, in every deed and word, to all alike proclaiming one church, one faith, one Lord. Through many a day of darkness, through many a scene of strife, the faithful few fought bravely, to guard the nation’s life. Their gospel of redemption, sin pardoned, man restored, was all in this enfolded: one church, one faith, one Lord. Thy mercy will not fail us, nor leave thy work undone; with thy right hand to help us, thy victory shall be won; and then, by men and angels, thy name shall be adored, and this shall be their anthem: one church, one faith, one Lord. E. H. Plumptre (1821-1891) THORNBURY, CP 606
The Blessing Christ the Son of God perfect in you the image of his glory and gladden your hearts with the good news of his kingdom; and the blessing of God almighty the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. Voluntary

2022 – REFLECT. REVIVE. REJOICE The flowers today have been given by Brian Walker in loving memory of his daughter Joanna Lawson. Holocaust Memorial Evensong – today at 3.30pm. We are delighted to welcome Iby Knill as our speaker and the service will be led by our clergy and Cathedral Choir. Iby was born in 1923, brought up in Bratislava, then Czechoslovakia. In 1942 she escaped to Hungary and after a period of hiding and resistance work, she was caught and imprisoned – eventually being taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau and then as slave labour to an armament factory. She was liberated by American forces whilst on a forced march to Bergen-Belsen. She worked as an interpreter with the British Control Commission of Germany until 1946 and married Bert, an officer in the British Army that same year. Do come along to Evensong today if you can to hear her story. Children’s Space: Please note that Children’s Space is not meeting at present on Sundays. We will let you know when it resumes. The Artspace Tear & Repair exhibition continues this week and up until 7 February. Candlemas – next Sunday 30 January: Forty days after Christmas the Church celebrates The Presentation of Christ in the Temple or ‘Candlemas’, re-calling the event in St Luke's Gospel when the child Jesus was greeted in the Temple by Simeon and Anna and acclaimed ‘as a light for the nations’. We shall anticipate Candlemas in the worship of the Cathedral at all three main services on Sunday 30 January. Candlemas marks the end of the Christmas and Epiphany seasons and at the same time pivots our attention towards this coming Lent, Holy Week and Easter. We do hope that you can join with us. Sunday 6 February The Legal Service, when we welcome invited members of the judiciary and Civic representatives, is to be held in the Cathedral at 11am. There will, on this day, be no Choral Eucharist at 10.30am or Children’s Space. The Girls’ Choir is having a ‘Safari Evensong’, when they will be singing at St Mary’s Church, Whitkirk. This day is also Accession Day as it will be 70 years to the day when the Queen acceded to the throne. At Evensong on this day we shall be holding a special service marking her Accession when Bishop Toby will be preaching. Watch out for our celebrations later in the year to mark this momentous and special occasion. Monday Fellowship 14 February at 2pm in the de Lacy Centre. Fiona Beevers will be speaking this month about some of her experiences whilst working as a head teacher in Sudan. Please book the date and do join the meeting, even if you have never been before – tea and coffee and biscuits will of course be a part of the afternoon. Cathedral Sing! Saturday 12 February 10am - 12.30pm: The Cathedral is hosting a ‘Be a Chorister for a Morning’ event, where children across Bradford are invited to sing with our choristers. This promises to be great fun – if you know any children who would love to be involved, please contact Naomi Reiss naomi.reiss@bradfordcathedral.org or 07960 509967 before Wednesday 9 February. Hearing Loop: Following works done in the cathedral last week, we are pleased to confirm that our new hearing loop is in operation. It will be available during any service or event – all you need to do is to turn your hearing aid to the T position. It covers all the cathedral and the de Lacy Centre (Parish Room) apart from the Chancel, Sanctuary and Lady Chapel. If you require any assistance or have any issues with the loop whilst visiting us for an event or service, please speak to a member of the team. 16
