Welcome and notices The Reverend Canon Mandy Coutts, Canon for Mission and Pastoral Development We stand Silence

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The children and young people leave for Children’s Space and return for Communion

Opening Hymn Jesus is Lord! Creation’s voice proclaims it, for by his power each tree and flower was planned and made. Jesus is Lord! The universe declares it; sun, moon and stars in heaven cry: Jesus is Lord! Jesus is Lord! Jesus is Lord! praise him with Halleluias, for Jesus is Lord! Jesus is Lord! Yet from his throne eternal in flesh he came to die in pain on Calvary’s tree. Jesus is Lord! From him all life proceeding, yet gave his life a ransom, thus setting us free: Jesus is Lord! O’er sin the mighty conqueror, from death he rose; and all his foes shall own his name. Jesus is Lord! God send his Holy Spirit to show by works of power that Jesus is Lord: Words and tune: David Mansell (b.1936) CP 170

The Greeting The Lord be with you and also with you. We remain standing

Prayers of Penitence Jesus says, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.’ So let us turn away from sin and turn to Christ, confessing our sins in repentance and faith. Silence The kingdom is yours, but we turn away from your just rule: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. 3

The power is yours, but we trust in our own power and strength: Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. The glory is yours, but we fall short of the glory of God: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. May the Father of all mercies cleanse you from your sins, and restore you in his image to the praise and glory of his name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We remain standing as the choir sings:

Gloria in excelsis Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex caelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Iesu Christe, Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus Altissimus, Iesu Christe, cum Sancto Spiritu, in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy, thou only art the Lord, thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Old Testament Reading

Jeremiah 23.1-6

read by Stephen Gant

Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the LORD. 2Therefore, thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the LORD. 3Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. 4I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the LORD. 5

The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The LORD is our righteousness.’ This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence

Gradual Hymn Let all the world in every corner sing, my God and King. The heavens are not too high, his praise may thither fly: the earth is not too low, his praises there may grow. Let all the world in every corner sing, my God and King.

5

Let all the world in every corner sing, my God and King. The church with psalms must shout, no door can keep them out; but above all the heart must bear the longest part. Let all the world in every corner sing, my God and King. Words: George Herbert (1593-1633) Tune: Luckington CP 497

Gospel Reading

Luke 23.33-43

Choir

Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia!

Choir

Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heaven. Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia! Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord.

When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. 34Then Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.’ And they cast lots to divide his clothing. 35And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, ‘He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!’ 36The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, 37and saying, ‘If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!’ 38There was also an inscription over him, ‘This is the King of the Jews.’ 39

One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, ‘Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!’ 40But the other rebuked him, saying, ‘Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.’ 42Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ 43He replied, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 6

Sermon The Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Dean of Bradford Silence

Motet Blessèd city, heav’nly Salem, Vision dear of peace and love, Who of living stones art builded In the height of heav’n above, And, by angel-hands apparell’d, As a bride doth earthward move; Out of heav’n from God descending, New and ready to be wed To thy Lord, whose love espous’d thee, Fair adorned shalt thou be led; All thy gates and all thy bulwarks Of pure gold are fashionèd. Bright thy gates of pearl are shining, They are open evermore; And, their well-earn’d rest attaining, Thither faithful souls do soar, Who for Christ's dear name in this world Pain and tribulation bore. Many a blow and biting sculpture Polish’d well those stones elect, In their places now compacted By the heav’nly architect, Never more to leave the temple Which with them the Lord hath deck’d. To this temple, where we call thee, Come, O Lord of hosts, today; With thy wonted loving-kindness Hear thy servants as they pray, And thy fullest benediction Shed within its walls alway. Amen Words: From plainsong hymns Urbs beata Jerusalem and Angularis fundamentum Music: Bairstow (1874-1946)

The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession

led by the Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Canon Precentor

Let us with confidence present our prayers and supplications to the throne of grace. After each section May your reign / kingdom / dominion / rule come Lord, hear our prayer. We ask this through Jesus Christ our King; to him be glory and power for ever. Amen

Dedication of the new kneelers We stand

Giving and Receiving Peace To crown all things there must be love, to bind all together and complete the whole. Let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of God’s peace 8

Colossians 3.14, 15

Offertory Hymn During this hymn a collection is taken The gifts of the people are presented, and the table is set with bread and wine Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne; hark, how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own! awake, my soul, and sing of him who died for thee, and hail him as thy matchless King through all eternity. Crown him the Virgin’s Son, the God incarnate born, whose arm the crimson trophies won which now his brow adorn: Fruit of the mystic Rose, as of that Rose the Stem; the Root whence mercy ever flows, the Babe of Bethlehem. Crown him the Lord of Love; behold his hands and side, those wounds yet visible above in beauty glorified: no angel in the sky can fully bear that sight, but downward bends his burning eye at mysteries so bright. Crown him the Lord of peace, whose power a sceptre sways from pole to pole, that wars may cease, and all be prayer and praise: his reign shall know no end, and round his piercèd feet fair flowers of paradise extend their fragrance ever sweet.

9

Crown him the Lord of years, the Potentate of time, creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime: all hail, Redeemer, hail! for thou hast died for me; thy praise shall never, never fail throughout eternity. Words: Matthew Bridges (1800-1894); Revelation 19.12 Tune: G.J. Elvey (1816-1893); Diademata CP 166

Prayer of Preparation Blessed be God, who enthrones us with Christ in the heavenly realms. May we feed upon the bread of God and drink the royal wine of heaven. Blessed be God for ever.

Great Thanksgiving Prayer

Prayer B

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For with the oil of gladness you have anointed Christ the Lord, your only Son, to be our great high priest and king of all creation. As priest, he offered himself once for all upon the altar of the cross and redeemed the human race by this perfect sacrifice of peace. As king he claims dominion over all your creatures, that he may bring before your infinite majesty a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love and peace. 10

And so with angels and archangels and all the heavenly host, we proclaim your glory and join their unending hymn of praise: Choir

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cĂŚli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup, and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. 11

Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. We sit or kneel Silence

The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Giving of Communion God’s holy gifts for God’s holy people. Jesus Christ is holy, Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

12

As the lay ministers receive communion, the choir sings: Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace.

Stewards will direct you to the communion rail Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer or non-alcoholic wine All who are baptised are welcome to receive communion Anyone not baptised is welcome to receive a prayer of blessing

Communion Motet Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and the Spirit, the Spirit of God dwelleth within you: for the temple of God is holy. Which temple ye are: for the love of whom ye do this day celebrate the joys of the temple with a season of festivity. Alleluia. Words: Sarum Antiphon for the Dedication of a Church Music: Harris (1883-1973)

Communion Hymn Blessèd city, heavenly Salem, vision dear of peace and love, who of living stones art builded in the height of heaven above, and with angel hosts encircled as a bride dost earthward move. Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ the Head and corner-stone, chosen of the Lord, and precious, binding all the Church in one, Holy Sion’s help for ever, and her confidence alone.

13

To this temple, where we call thee, come, O Lord of Hosts, to-day; with thy wonted loving kindness hear thy servants as they pray; and thy fullest benediction shed within its walls alway. Here vouchsafe to all thy servants what they ask of thee to gain, what they gain from thee for ever with the blessèd to retain, and hereafter in thy glory evermore with thee to reign. Words: pre-9th century Latin, transl. by J.M. Neale (1818-1866) Tune: Westminster Abbey; adapted from an anthem by Henry Purcell (1659-1685) CP 207

Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.
