Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission One of three Cathedrals in the Anglican Diocese of Leeds
Our purpose is serving Christ and transforming lives through welcome, worship and encounter. ❖ A very warm welcome to Bradford Cathedral for this service, particularly if you are visiting or with us for the first time. We hope you will stay and enjoy refreshments with us after the service, which will be served at the West End of the Cathedral. ❖ Please join in with saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service, and sit or stand as directed if you are able. Large print copies are available from the stewards at the main door. ❖ As part of our work to keep you safe and healthy, we are keeping some windows and doors open to make sure the Cathedral is well ventilated, which may mean parts of the nave are cold. We advise you, where you can, to dress warmly when attending a service. ❖ Today’s Eucharist is sung by the Boys’ Choir and Lay Clerks of the Cathedral. The choral setting is the Communion Service in F by Harold Darke (1888-1976). ❖ If you need to, please sit down at any point in the service, even if the instruction is to stand. It is more important for you to be comfortable and safe. ❖ We will be pleased to help you if you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer. Please speak with one of the stewards at the main door before the start of the service. ❖ Please check that you have switched off your mobile phone. ❖ Lavatories, including disabled facilities, are available towards the back of church. ❖ The hearing loop has now been replaced. If you use a hearing aid, please turn it to the T position. ❖ In the event of an emergency, please remain calm and seated. Stewards will direct you out of the Cathedral.

Elegy – Hubert Parry
Welcome and Greeting The Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Acting Dean We stand. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord of glory be with you. and also with you.
Hymn Hail to the Lord who comes, comes to his temple gate, not with his angel host, not in his kingly state: no shouts proclaim him nigh, no crowds his coming wait. But borne upon the throne of Mary’s gentle breast, watched by her duteous love, in her fond arms at rest; thus to his Father’s house he comes, the heavenly guest. There Joseph at her side in reverent wonder stands; and, filled with holy joy, old Simeon in his hands takes up the promised child, the glory of all lands. Hail to the great First-born, whose ransom-price they pay, the Son before all worlds, the child of man to-day, that he might ransom us who still in bondage lay.

O Light of all the earth, thy children wait for thee: come to thy temples here, that we, from sin set free, before thy Father’s face may all presented be. John Ellerton (1826-1893) OLD 120TH, CP 94
We remain standing.
Introduction Dear friends, forty days ago we celebrated the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now we recall the day on which he was presented in the Temple, when he was offered to the Father and shown to his people. As a sign of his coming among us, his mother was purified, as we now come to him for cleansing. In their old age Simeon and Anna recognised him as their Lord, as we today sing of his glory. In this Eucharist, we celebrate both the joy of his coming and his searching judgement, looking back to the day of his birth and forward to the coming days of his passion. We remain standing as the choir sings
Gloria Choir Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy, thou only art the Lord, thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The president introduces a period of silent prayer.

Collect of the Day Almighty and ever-living God, clothed in majesty, whose beloved Son was this day presented in the Temple, in substance of our flesh: grant that we may be presented to you with pure and clean hearts, by your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. We sit.
First Reading
Hebrews 2:14-18 read by Isla Skinner
Since the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. 16 For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence

Gospel Reading
Luke 2:22-40 read by the Reverend Rod Anderson, Cathedral Chaplain
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, ‘Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord’), 24 and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, ‘a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons.’ 25
Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, 29
‘Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.’ 33
And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed 35 so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.’ 36
There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband for seven years after her marriage, 37 then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshipped there with fasting and prayer night and day. 38At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. 39
When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40 The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God was upon him. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon
After an opening prayer, we sit. The Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Acting Dean A brief Organ Interlude follows.
The Baptism of Matthew Herbert We stand and turn to the font
Presentation Faith is the gift of God to his people. In baptism the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling. People of God, will you welcome Matthew and uphold him in his new life in Christ? With the help of God, we will. Parents and godparents, the Church receives Matthew with joy. Today we are trusting God for his growth in faith. Will you pray for him, draw him by your example into the community of faith, and walk with him in the way of Christ? With the help of God, we will. In baptism Matthew begins his journey in faith. You speak for him today. Will you care for him, and help him to take his place within the life and worship of Christ’s church? With the help of God, we will.
Decision The minister addresses the parents In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore, I ask: Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God? I reject them. Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil? I renounce them. Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour? I repent of them. Do you turn to Christ as Saviour? I turn to Christ.
7
Do you submit to Christ as Lord? I submit to Christ. Do you come to Christ, the way, the truth and the life? I come to Christ. The minister marks Matthew with the sign of the cross, in oil Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of his cross. Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified. Fight valiantly as a disciple of Christ against sin, the world and the devil, and remain faithful to Christ to the end of your life. May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, restore in you the image of his glory, and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ.
Prayer Over the Water Praise God who made heaven and earth, who keeps his promise for ever. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. Almighty God, whose son Jesus Christ was baptized in the river Jordan: we thank you for the gift of water to cleanse and revive us. We thank you that through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people out of slavery to freedom in the promised land. We thank you that through the deep waters of death you brought your Son, and raised him to life in triumph. Bless this water, that your servant who is washed in it may be made one with Christ in his death and in his resurrection, to be cleansed and delivered from all sin. Send your Holy Spirit upon Matthew. Bring him to new birth in the household of faith, and raise him with Christ to full and eternal life; for all might, majesty, authority, and power are yours, now and forever. Amen.
8
Profession of Faith My sisters and brothers, I ask you to profess, together with this family, the faith of the Church. Do you believe and trust in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Baptism Matthew, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. May God, who has received you by baptism into his Church, pour upon you the riches of his grace, that within the company of Christ’s pilgrim people you may be renewed daily by his anointing Spirit, and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory. Amen.
9
Welcome of the Baptized There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism: by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body. We welcome Matthew into the fellowship of faith; we are children of the same heavenly Father; we welcome you.
Giving of a Lit Candle A candle is lit from the Easter candle and given to Matthew God has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and has given us a place with the saints in light. You have received the light of Christ; walk in this light all the days of your life. Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. We sit
Prayers of Intercession
led by Alex McLelland
In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or another, response is used: Lord in your mercy hear our prayer. At the end: Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. We stand.
Giving and Receiving Peace In the tender mercy of our God the dayspring from on high has broken upon us to give light to those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death and to guide our feet in the way of peace.
10
cf Luke 1.78,79
The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of peace, and offer our gifts to God. The Table is set with bread and wine.
Hymn Praise to the Holiest in the height, and in the depth be praise: in all his words most wonderful, most sure in all his ways! h
O loving wisdom of our God! When all was sin and shame, a second Adam to the fight and to the rescue came. h
O wisest love! that flesh and blood, which did in Adam fail, should strive afresh against the foe, should strive, and should prevail; g
And that a higher gift than grace should flesh and blood refine, God’s presence and his very self, and essence all-divine. h
O generous love! that he, who smote in Man for man the foe, the double agony in Man for man should undergo: h
And in the garden secretly, and on the cross on high, should teach his brethren, and inspire to suffer and to die. k
Praise to the Holiest in the height, and in the depth be praise: in all his words most wonderful, most sure in all his ways. John Henry Newman (1801-1890) GERONTIUS, CP 557

Prayer at the Preparation of the Table Father, in Christ there has sprung up a light for the righteous; accept the gifts we bring before you and grant that Christ may shine in us to the praise and glory of your name. Amen.
Great Thanksgiving Prayer
It is indeed right and good, always and everywhere to give you thanks and praise through Jesus Christ, who is one with you from all eternity. For on this day he appeared in the Temple in substance of our flesh to come near to us in judgement. He searches the hearts of all your people and brings to light the image of your splendour. Your servant Simeon acclaimed him as the light to lighten the nations while Anna spoke of him to all who looked for your redemption. Destined for the falling and rising of many, he was lifted high upon the cross and a sword of sorrow pierced his mother’s heart when by his sacrifice he made our peace with you. And now we rejoice and glorify your name that we, too, have seen your salvation and join with angels and archangels in their unending hymn of praise: Choir Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
12
Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of your kingdom, and with this bread and this cup we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: 13
Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen. We kneel or sit. Silence
The Lord’s Prayer Believing the promises of God, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread of life, and that life is the light of the world. God is here among us, light in the midst of us, bring us to light and life.
Giving of Communion God’s holy gifts for God’s holy people. Jesus Christ is holy, Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. As the ministers receive communion the choir sings O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace. Please stand in your place if you would like to receive the bread of communion. Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer. When the communion administrant says The Body of Christ we respond Amen. 14
If you are at home and unable to receive communion, you may wish to use this prayer, after Richard of Chichester: Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.
Communion Motet When to the Temple Mary went, And brought the Holy Child, Him did the aged Simeon see, As it had been revealed. He took up Jesus in his arms And blessing God he said: In peace I now depart, my Saviour having seen, The Hope of Israel, the Light of men. Help now Thy servants, gracious Lord, That we may ever be As once the faithful Simeon was, Rejoicing but in Thee; And when we must from Earth departure take, May gently fall asleep and with Thee wake.
Johannes Eccard (1553-1611)
Prayer after Communion Almighty Father, whose Son our Saviour Jesus Christ is the light of the world: may your people, illumined by your word and sacraments, shine with the radiance of his glory, that he may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; for he is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen.
15
Nunc Dimittis Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; to be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Herbert Sumsion (1899-1995), Evening Service in G
Final Responsory Father, here we bring an end to our celebration of the Saviour’s birth. Help us, in whom he has been born, to live his life that has no end. Here we have offered the Church's sacrifice of praise. Help us, who have received the bread of life, to be thankful for your gift. Here we have rejoiced with faithful Simeon and Anna. Help us, who have found the Lord in his temple, to trust in your eternal promises. Here we turn from Christ’s birth to his passion. Help us, for whom Lent is near, to enter deeply into the Easter mystery. Here we bless one another in your name. Help us, who now go in peace, to shine with your light in the world. Thanks be to God. Amen. Voluntary

2022 – REFLECT. REVIVE. REJOICE The flowers today have been given by Nora and John Whitham in memory of their parents. Today we remember the Presentation of Christ in the Temple or Candlemas. Forty days after Christmas the Church celebrates The Presentation of Christ in the Temple or ‘Candlemas’, recalling the event in St Luke’s Gospel when the child Jesus was greeted in the Temple by Simeon and Anna and acclaimed ‘as a light for the nations’. Candlemas also marks the end of the Christmas and Epiphany seasons and at the same time pivots our attention towards this coming Lent, Holy Week and Easter. We shall anticipate Candlemas in the worship of all the services held in the Cathedral today. We do hope that you can join with us. New Covid Guidance means that face-coverings in the Cathedral are no longer required. We are, however, keeping all other mitigations in place to ensure safety for all. Canon Mandy has been signed off work by her GP for a further four weeks. Please hold her in your prayers. Children’s Space: Please note that Children’s Space is not meeting at present on Sundays. We will let you know when it resumes. The Artspace Tear & Repair exhibition: This week is your last chance to see this exhibition as it ends on Monday 7 February. Please book the date and do join the meeting, even if you have never been before – tea and coffee and biscuits will of course be a part of the afternoon. Hearing Loop: Following recent work done in the cathedral, we are pleased to confirm that our new hearing loop is in operation. It will be available during any service or event – all you need to do is to turn your hearing aid to the T position. It covers all the cathedral, apart from the Chancel, Sanctuary and Lady Chapel, and the de Lacy Centre (Parish Room). If you require any assistance or have any issues with the loop whilst visiting us for an event or service, please speak to a member of the team.
