The Eucharist
The Second Sunday of Advent
5 December 2021 10.30
Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission One of three Cathedrals in the Church of England Diocese of Leeds
Our purpose is to serve Jesus Christ as a vibrant community of worship and mission enriching the City, the Diocese and further afield. A very warm welcome to Bradford Cathedral for this service, particularly if you are visiting or with us for the first time. We hope you will stay and enjoy refreshments with us after the service, which will be served at the West End of the Cathedral. Please join in with saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service, and sit or stand as directed if you are able. Large print copies are available from the stewards at the main door. As part of our work to keep you safe and healthy, we are keeping some windows and doors open to make sure the Cathedral is well ventilated, which may mean parts of the nave are cold. We advise you, where you can, to dress warmly when attending a service. Today’s Eucharist is sung by the Girls and Lay Clerks of the Cathedral Choir. The choral setting is the Communion Service in E by Harold Darke (1888-1976). If you need to, please sit down at any point in the service, even if the instruction is to stand. It is more important for you to be comfortable and safe. We will be pleased to help you if you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer. Please speak with one of the stewards at the main door before the start of the service. We apologize that the Hearing Enhancement Loop is not working. Please check that you have switched off your mobile phone. Lavatories, including disabled facilities, are available towards the back of church. In the event of an emergency, please remain calm and seated. Stewards will direct you out of the Cathedral.

Amen. All the choristers pray the Choristers’ Prayer Bless, O Lord, us your servants, who minister in your Church. Hymn Hills of the North, rejoice, river and mountain-spring, hark to the advent voice, valley and lowland, sing. Christ comes in righteousness and love, he brings salvation from above. Isles of the Southern seas, sing to the listening earth, carry on every breeze hope of a world’s new birth: in Christ shall all be made anew, his word is sure, his promise true. Lands of the East, arise, he is your brightest morn, greet him with joyous eyes, praise shall his path adorn: your seers have longed to know their Lord; to you he comes, the final Word. Shores of the utmost West, lands of the setting sun, welcome the heavenly guest in whom the dawn has come: he brings a never-ending light who triumphed o’er our darkest night. Shout, as you journey home, songs be in every mouth, lo, from the North they come, from East and West and South: in Jesus all shall find their rest, in him the universe be blest. The Advent Prose
Choir We have sinned, and are as an unclean thing, and we all do fade as a leaf: and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away; thou hast hid thy face from us: and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.
All
Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness.
Prayers of Penitence When the Lord comes, he will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness, and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Therefore in the light of Christ let us confess our sins.
1 Corinthians 4.5
Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We remain standing as the choir sings
Kyrie eleison Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
The president introduces a period of silent prayer.

Collect of the Day O Lord, raise up, we pray, your power and come among us, and with great might succour us; that whereas, through our sins and wickedness we are grievously hindered in running the race that is set before us, your bountiful grace and mercy may speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen. We sit.
First Reading
Malachi 3.1-4 read by Una Barry
Thus says the LORD God: See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight—indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. 2 But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; 3 he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. 4 Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years.
This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence We stand.
Choir Choir
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel Reading
Luke 3.1-6
cf. Isaiah 40.3-5
read by the Revd Canon Paul Booth
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, 2 during the 6
high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, 4 as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, ‘The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; 6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.
Sermon
After an opening prayer, we sit. The Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Acting Dean Silence We stand.
The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

We kneel or sit.
Prayers of Intercession
led by Jane Thompson
In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or another, response is used: Lord in your mercy hear our prayer. At the end: Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. We stand.
Giving and Receiving Peace In the tender mercy of our God, the dayspring from on high shall break upon us, to give light to those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1.78, 79 The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of peace, and offer our gifts to God. The Table is set with bread and wine.
Hymn Lo, he comes with clouds descending, once for favoured sinners slain; thousand thousand saints attending swell the triumph of his train: Alleluia! God appears on earth to reign. Every eye shall now behold him robed in dreadful majesty; those who set at naught and sold him, pierced and nailed him to the Tree, deeply wailing, shall the true Messiah see. 8
Those dear tokens of his passion still his dazzling body bears, cause of endless exultation to his ransomed worshippers: with what rapture gaze we on those glorious scars! Yea, Amen, let all adore thee, high on thine eternal throne; Saviour, take the power and glory, claim the kingdom for thine own: Alleluia! Thou shalt reign, and thou alone. Charles Wesley (1707-1788) and John Cennick (1718-1755) HELMSLEY, CP 31
Prayer at the Preparation of the Table Look upon us in mercy not in judgement; draw us from hatred to love; make the frailty of our praise a dwelling place for your glory. Amen.
Great Thanksgiving Prayer
It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise, holy Father, heavenly King, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
9
And now we give you thanks because you sent him to redeem us from sin and death and to make us inheritors of everlasting life; that when he shall come again in power and great triumph to judge the world, we may with joy behold his appearing, and in confidence may stand before him. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Choir Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O God Most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
All glory be to you, our heavenly Father, who, in your tender mercy, gave your only Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there by his one oblation of himself once offered a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world; he instituted, and in his holy gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again. Hear us, merciful Father, we humbly pray, and grant that, by the power of your Holy Spirit, we receiving these gifts of your creation, this bread and this wine, according to your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. 10
Praise to you, Lord Jesus: Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life: Lord Jesus, come in glory. Therefore, Lord and heavenly Father, in remembrance of the precious death and passion, the mighty resurrection and glorious ascension of your dear Son Jesus Christ, we offer you through him this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Grant that by his merits and death, and through faith in his blood, we and all your Church may receive forgiveness of our sins and all other benefits of his passion. Although we are unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer you any sacrifice, yet we pray that you will accept this the duty and service that we owe. Do not weigh our merits, but pardon our offences, and fill us all who share in this holy communion with your grace and heavenly blessing; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. We kneel or sit. Silence
The Lord’s Prayer Awaiting his coming in glory, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
11
Breaking of the Bread Every time we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
Giving of Communion Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. As the ministers receive communion the choir sings O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.
Please stand in your place if you would like to receive the bread of communion. Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer. When the communion administrant says The body of Christ we respond Amen. If you are at home and unable to receive communion, you may wish to use this prayer, after Richard of Chichester: Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.
Communion Motet And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

G. F. Handel (1685-1759)
Prayer after Communion Father in heaven, who sent your Son to redeem the world and will send him again to be our judge: give us grace so to imitate him in the humility and purity of his first coming that, when he comes again, we may be ready to greet him with joyful love and firm faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We stand.
Hymn The advent of our King our prayers must now employ, and we must hymns of welcome sing in strains of holy joy. The everlasting Son incarnate deigns to be; himself a servant’s form puts on, to set his servants free. Daughter of Sion, rise to meet thy lowly King; nor let thy faithless heart despise the peace he comes to bring. As judge, on clouds of light, he soon will come again, and his true members all unite with him in heaven to reign. All glory to the Son who comes to set us free, with Father, Spirit, ever One, through all eternity. Charles Coffin (1676-1749) tr. John Chandler (1808-1876) ST THOMAS, CP 36

The Blessing Christ the Sun of Righteousness shine upon you, scatter the darkness from before your path, and make you ready to meet him when he comes in glory; and the blessing of God almighty the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. Voluntary
